I use to get a lot of cool handmade art supplies off Etsy. Now I can't even find anything of that nature since it's buried under garbage art supplies I could have gotten from the Dollar Store
GoImagine has been taking up the handmade niche if you need a marketplace. And I love their AI policy as it’s Technical only allowed, if you do your own fulfillment while signing and numbering each canvas or print. Something the prompt and publish people would never do. But the minority of existing artists leveraging AI would.
This is why I get so annoyed when regular consumers go “oh you’re an artist, you should try etsy”. The quality, quality and prices on this A1 garbage is almost impossible to compete with
I was on etsy for 6 years or more and my store got closed. Everything sold was my own hand drawn designs. my store got closed down and there was zero response from their side. I've opened a new store and its like 100x harder to get anything going, with the exact same designs that earned me a living before (i had a lot of sales). So the problem is clearly on their side. They really made a bad move with this new CEO guy.
Ugh, as if Etsy isn't hard enough to get seen on to begin with. When they got Drew Barrymore in there I was already starting to think that maybe they're not really doing this for the small business anymore.
Ok, my 2 cents. Before I step in and defend the use of AI tools in the creation of artwork I would like to say I fully agree with 98% of everything you pointed out in the video and the low-effort trash, and lack of research on a subject matter before bringing a product to market is discussing and I'm glad Etsy has addressed some of it with there listing grouping (If it works but I'm not hopeful). Getting to the point, I'm a Bachelor's Degree graduate from an art school and have adopted GenAI into my workflow. I realize I'm in the minority as I make different home decor posters centered around -punk themes. But unlike my competitors, nothing is generated and posted. Everything gets its pass through Photoshop and most final designs are composite of multiple elements. I even go the extra step of ensuring that with my Cyberpunk series, all Chinese/Cantonese is Traditional as the genre has more in common with Hong Kong than Main Land. To address Generators I would like to offer a different explanation. Anyone can make a poster by hand same as they can with a Generator and they can call themselves an artist for that but it doesn't make them skilled. Those who have developed the skill of writing prompts are still artists same as a guitarist, a painter, or a sculptor but they are not Graphic Artists. They are a new form of writer that composes a play for the Generator to act out and produce a piece of graphic art. So while I will say yes you did at the end say skilled artists are using the system the 2% I can't agree with is the bashing of a virgining art form that has people making posters with crayons and people making posters with narration. But to close out this I would like to pull back and say even with inpainting on AI tools and even if the tech gets really advanced, graphic editing is still superior for final detail work. Please consider adding a Gen into your workflow if for nothing else than to use in ideation or planning.
"those who developed a skill of writing prompts are still artists" Damn, so I can call myself an artist since I can find what pictures I want in Google? Damn I was following you until this, but now you lost me
@raven75257 you jest but to be honest yes. If you know how to manipulate the search engine using Not (-), Exact (" "), site: , the date ranges or any of the other dozens of short hand elements to get the results you want faster then the average person that get Over SEO'ed crap info on the first 3 pages then I'll call you an artist, Hell I'd make you a business card for it and solicit you to employers. I believe an Artist is anyone that has achieved skill over a discipline. I appreciate your humor but also agree with punchline as still an example an artist, sorry.
In my opinion, what makes art art is the intention behind any decision that is made to create the artwork. Almost all people have a sense of ästhetic, form or color, thats why choosing things out of a set of options is way easier than creating those options. That also means that artist are people that make those decisions, better artists being people that can make better decisions for their intention. They can manipulate your perception to make you feel specific things. It doesnt matter if prompting is a skill, or how good quality the quality is, AI will always lack intention and understanding. If someone uses AI to generate options for them to chose from, they are less of an artist in my opinion
I don't agree I'm afraid. If you can't come up with original ideas then you're just going through the motions and not really an artist. Of course as a traditional artist your mind is still collecting references and jumbling them up to produce something new, but to skip that altogether and get a computer to do it? No. Also if you show someone your work and they love it, then tell them that you were helped by AI, I guarantee it will put them off.
Having an idea is just half of the artistic process. Did you learn this in your BFA program? AI “artists” don’t actually *make* the art. That’s why they’re not artists. Using AI as a tool in your workflow is fine, that’s what the technology is there for. Typing in a prompt (doesn’t matter how detailed it is or how much of a “master prompter” someone is) doesn’t make someone an artist, and it certainly doesn’t mean they deserve to make a quick buck from it.
The irony is that they have a new advert all about how robots aren't as good as humans and such.

When all they care about is money
That creepily insincere guy with his fake smile probably feels personally attacked when you impugn the dead-eyed inhumanity of AI art.
This is so depressing

AI will be a doom for Etsy.
