I used to think the system had no point if the typing couldn't be 100% sure. As many, I first got into the "game" to find some sense of belonging and to figure out which sides of myself I had to capitalize on, only to find out that only few people feel very typical of one type and that there are infinite ways of playing your own part in the world. However, the more I learned, the more I realized that the sole fact of having some sort a schematic representation of the human cognition was extremely helpful with navigating reality and feel a little less like everything is a chaotic mess, and it simply gave me a box of great tools to observe myself. Another important thing that these theories have brought me is the ability to gain some perspective and to put myself in other people's shoes more easily, whether or not I know for sure in what "box" to put them in. I used to always get very frustrated at how different some people seemed to be from me, not simply because of those differences themselves but because there was no way I could make sense of them. Like, are they just crazy? Intellectually dishonest? Why in the world would anyone do this and that? All I want is to understand. So as I began studying jungian typology, I started to feel like a weight was lifting off my shoulders and my angst lessened. It just gave me a clear framework for reflecting upon myself and others, even when answers remain unclear. Interestingly, it also gave me the final push to distance myself from people who had too much of a black and white view of right and wrong, and were willingly enabling my tendencies to antagonize others for being different.

You certainly picked an ambitious fight here. Narcissistic over-investment in one's type, and a literal and dogmatic attitude toward the model, seem to be central pillars of the mbti online community.
I admire the intellectual honesty, and the fact you underline what's important, the usefulness of the model for individuation and growth, and not using it as a slightly more intellectual substitute for astrology.

This should be a staple 101! Such great insight. "Your type is not who you are." Don't come to typology looking for identity because it's such a small piece of who we are. And if we do that, our bias will blind us. Brilliant!

I once so fixated to one of the 16 personality types, till later I questioned myself why am I want to be the one more special than anyone? I read all descriptions of the 16 personalities, and find out everyone is special, unique, and *functional* in their own way. That was my cue to take MBTI not as labels, but a way to understand myself.

Typology and cognitive functions can be such a complex topic. I have been confident of my understanding of cognitive functions, at times and later I would become humbled and realize I didn’t know as much as I thought I did. I think, if anyone has this same struggle, they should create their own logical framework, based upon the information they have gathered, so that they may have their own understanding of and their own definitions of the cognitive functions. This will increase one’s accuracy when typing themselves and others. By the way, great video, Harry!

I even feel the same way sometime with CPT! More information is always being uncovered, and while the theory's constant expansion is exciting it is always humbling as well - especially when some older content could now be revisited in more depth.
I agree, such a scientific mindset is super important! For as long as the person remains humble about their framework and happy to intellectually collaborate with others I believe this is a solid approach.

I agree that it is not something to stress about. One problem with people who take it too seriously is that they try to mold themselves into the stereotypes. That is why I have gotten more into unwanted debates with supposed thinking types. I'm not saying everyone who identifies as a thinking type is rude or aggressive. I have actually also gotten support from some of the people who identify as a thinking type. I was just addressing a minority issue.

Amazing how you are able to give such an eloquent and informed talk right from the top of your head. Inspiring.
On the topic of isolated systems within typology:
I'm decently active on the subreddits r/INFJ and r/INTP and I noticed that there is a certain mentality of having to be a certain way to be the respective type in a way that is IMO quite detrimental. I believe people are becoming more like their sterotypical type because they think that is the way they are and the only way they can be. It takes quite a lot of freedom away from members of the communities while causing some people to feel either unable to change or use their type as an excuse to be a certain way. I think MBTI should be about understanding and growth but within certain communities it became about stagnation.
All the things I have just described were subtle themes I noticed and definitely not true for the entireties of the communities. Still, it worries me.
What do you think about this and do you think there is a way to properly reach and educate the members of the communities?

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  2 роки тому +27

This has been a topic close to my heart this year and eventually I just sat down in front of the camera and let it spill out.
What you describe here is exactly the tendency that gives me cause for concern. As you say, it won't apply to every corner of such communities but I have certainly noticed such patterns across the board - as you say, such attitudes tend to be the antitheses of the systems they employ.
Ultimately not everyone will be interested in using typology with a growth mindset, but one thing we can do is to make as clear cut and explicit as possible the ways typology *can* be used for growth. Not everyone will be aware that type can be used for growth at all, and the more synonymous type and growth can become the more intuitively people can make that connection.
I also believe balancing the way types are generally understood will also go some way to combating this dilemma: some types tend to be placed on pedestals more than others, and others practically scorned by comparison. If all types are understood more realistically there will be henceforth less impetus for people to jump towards the type they consider the coolest or most naturally competent.

It feels a bit weird doing this, since I've just finished my CPT typing sessions but let's pretend I have something interesting to say that others might find useful ;) lol
This journey started with a 'oh another personality game'. Leading to the first test I took. Leading to being typed INFJ. Didn't know what that was, so looked it up. Turned out that they were these rainbow pooping unicorns that only came out after midnight when the stars turn blue or something. I checked my poop. No rainbows anywhere in sight. But my curiosity was tickled. 2 years, 1000 UA-cam video hours and 46 tests later and I was stuck on a merry-go-round between 3 Types. Harry being the only one that actually made sense 'FOR ME' (this is very important... because this is very personal and not to be generalized. you need to follow what makes sense to 'YOU'), I finally decided to let him type me through CPT.
When you say that people shouldn't take it too serious, I have this knee-jerk reaction of responding that they're already not taking it serious enough. Because...
From my experience, what it looks like is that there are two opposing forces at work. A lot of typers who 'know' that this shouldn't be taken too serious but act as if it is (not always out of malice, the majority out of a sincere desire to help but 'they' take themselves a bit too serious) and the typees who should adopt a much more critical way of looking at this jumping to embrace the first outcome they get (which fits their ideal) as some sort of lifeline. This combination is a dangerous opportunity for abuse, misunderstanding, bad choices and harm.
What you describe made me think of the Peer Review process that scientists must submit themselves to in order for their work to be validated and taken serious. I very much agree with this because that is exactly the process I used. Not because I didn't take it serious, but because I did. I take my journey of self-discovery, self-understanding, self-development and self-improvement very serious. And because of that I'm not going to just jump on the first wagon that looks pretty. We owe it to ourselves to be critical while remaining open minded. If a typer takes people's critique or questions and doubts as offensive or an attack, that is a sure sign of that typer not being mature enough (in my book) to be trusted with something as important as my personal journey.
However... Even those that you know for a fact are a bit of a joke, even those people have interesting viewpoints. So what I did was I went shopping.
I shopped in every UA-cam video, from every (self-proclaimed) typing expert, looking for similarities in differences and differences in similarities. I paid attention to the various different ways a concept (like Introverted Intuition, e.g.) was explained by different people, using different analogies, different metaphors, different examples. And through this process I was able to form my own hypothesis and come to a lot of A-Ha moments. Eventually narrowing it down to 3 Types (as you know lol) at which point I then decided to get help to go the rest of the way.
Funny enough, 2 of 3 types actually turned out to be accurate, though I still very much recognize behavioral elements from the 3rd.
Type may not define us, and I agree with that. But it gives (if used and looked at correctly) a lot of insight and understanding. Like once you know that brick doesn't float you won't try to make a boat out of it... Which doesn't mean you can't use it for something else that it does fit for.
(this was long, but you asked for it... so :P ) lol ;)

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  2 роки тому +7

Ahhh I like that; it is difficult to draw lines around 'taking type seriously' as, as you rightly pointed out, we must be serious about our own growth in order to employ type in a less serious manner in order to eventually find it in such a way that will *allow* us to take it seriously! It's an incredibly useful tool, especially for those in your situation, but for those in the hypothetical stages an even looser attitude is valuable :)

You make some great points here and what I think of is: Limiting Beliefs. Becoming too attached to seeing yourself as one type can help or hinder, depending on the circumstances. For example, if you believe you are a more social-centric type, but aren't, that might inadvertently help you grow more confident socially. On the other hand, if you are highly effective at being precise and narrowing down in your thinking and struggle to manage the sensory, but you think that can't be you, you might avoid living a life where that strength is fully realized and try valiantly to live your life as a master of the sensory, but ultimately fall short and wonder why you are falling behind others like you. These examples are a very broad way of looking at it, excluding other factors to hone in on how type belief can impact, but the general idea is that what you believe you are capable of can have a significant impact over time in how you direct your energies and what becomes a comfort zone mode of operating due to the competence and habit born from spending so much time there. I think it's safe to say a renowned soccer player is more likely to type as ESxP type and a software engineer more likely to type as an IxTx type in the myers-briggs terminology, but that isn't necessarily telling the full story of what their resting cognitive preferences are or how they approach their area of expertise compared to someone else.
In general, I think there may be an important distinction between what your comfort zone cognitive preference is and what your default cognitive preference is if we take away any and all trauma, neurodivergency, abnormally stressful circumstances, etc. But at that point, are we even still looking at you in a way that meaningfully matters or is the connection between those factors and typological cognitive preference too intertwined to separate. I guess what I'm getting at here is, people can develop unhealthy comfort zones that would mislead as to their best fit type, but also, some things don't just heal or go away overnight (trauma) or go away at all (neurodivergency) and so that adds a dimension to it that makes it especially challenging to understand in what way a person's cognition best fits into the puzzle pieces we are using.

I took the Meyers-Briggs test, on-line, back when you could take the entire thing for free. I got INFP. "Interesting." Soon after, I bought the book 'Please understand me' (?). Over the next 15+ years, I'd take a test every now and again and get INFP. So, when one of my kids also had that type, I told her "Impossible! You took it wrong. We're too different. You cannot be an INFP." lol. Turns out, *I* was the one who can't test to save my life.

Very interesting… I have found that overthinking and over speculation can really make the typing process (especially with MBTI) a nightmare. I have been oscillating between the IXFPs for way too long. I’m certain of Fi dominance and Te inferior, but I can’t for the life of me decide between Se Ni or Ne Si for the perceiving stack. I lean closer to INFP, mainly because from a holistic perspective that’s the type that just makes sense and feels right for me, and of course there are some specific details about the INFP that I can see in myself. But then I get tripped up because I realize that the descriptions of the ISFP’s Fi-Ni loop strangely resonate with me. I’ve also tried giving myself some direction by running experiments on myself where I operate under the assumption that I’m this type for a while, then I switch to the other type. But even there, there seem to be contradictions on either side. Basically, it seems that INFPs do A and B while ISFPs do X and Y, but I do A and Y.😂 Anyway, great video, very insightful.

Anyways, from personal experience it seems that the biggest barrier to growth is having to settle this internal tension within the individual entertaining the thought of being mistyped. This weird affiliation for a romantic image of a certain type, versus the haunting, residual realization that an alternative is perhaps more true to one's own nature.
But people are also missing out on what would happen after finding the type that resonates most with them: the path to growth would become much more clearly defined and acute for their particular set of experiences. But even before that, the pressure of having to uphold themselves to a certain type would be drastically reduced - if not gone completely - replaced with a calming certainty.
Also, I noticed a great sense of flow from one point to another in this video - how often have you been dipping into Introverted Sensing recently?

Hopefully there should be more videos like the reasons how someone were mistyped, which you have covered bit after bit in your signs you are not this type videos, maybe videos on how one cognitive functions attitude can be mistaken for another cognitive function or a behavior that is commonly associated with another type.

I'm very glad to see this video and absolutely agree that typing and understanding cognitive functions should be used for growth. After almost dying in a car wreck a little over two years ago, I've been delving into MBTI in hopes to out why I wasn't matching suspected mental disorders which may have been exasperated/caused by potential brain trauma due to being yeeted 30 ft from a hydroplaning, flipping car. Follow-up MRI's a year and a half later found no scarring or signs of damage surprisingly. Ptsd was definitely a suspect but oddly enough didn't seem related to the accident or its after effects such as the huge disfiguring scar on my abdomen or partially paralyzed left arm.
Long story short, after seeking professional psychiatric help (which offered very little other than an ADHD diagnosis) and learning about cognitive functions, it has given me insight to not only understand myself better, but those around me too. For example, the INTJ's in my life are like stone walls when talking to them. They aren't being mean, however. One admitted that it felt like there was a wall preventing any kind of communication until the 'information was done being processed' and from what I understand, this is part of the INTJ cognitive process. The old me would have been upset about the lack of communication. But now more than ever, I wholeheartedly understand we are all different and there is always room to grow especially when we try to understand and empathize with each other.

Excellent video, Harry! Having been typed under CPT’s model recently, and exploring personality theory for 15 years, starting with standard online tests, and identifying with the INTP “result,” I can say my more recent-ish dive really elucidated many aspects of my own journey and efforts to better understand cognitive expressions. At first, this was a deeper exploration as a resource to guide my own kids’ cognitive (and behavioral) development, and an attempt to better understand my youngest daughter, who I was/am practically certain is a Te-dom-ENTJ. My journey took me from INTP to INTJ and now ENTJ. The go-to cognitive functions tests have yielded the INTJ result, with high Ti usage, and these results also showed fairly developed other functions that didn’t make sense to many in various typology groups. I mustn’t be a “true” NT if I have devoted Fi AND Fe. I must be confused.
The thing is, none of the cognitive functions felt so unused or unpracticed. Once I started to really explore cognitive processes throughout different stages of child and adolescent development, and various situations and circumstances throughout adult life, I noticed a distinct pattern of default cognitive expressions. At the same time, I noticed that I still accessed and employed other functions when a situation necessitates, and without concerted effort. This, to me, demonstrated that other models, ahem, the eight function model with the “shadow functions” falls short due to its inherent and imposed limitations on type variation. My supposed “inferior function” doesn’t register as inferior in any way. Ni-Fi function as my divergent stack, but it is equally “lived-in” as my convergent stack. I simply favor the default expression of Te-Se when engaging my external world. I also make good use of non-preferred cognitive expressions as dip functions, which likely explains the results I get on cognitive functions tests. Likewise, the whole concept of “demon function” is just patently silly. I can see why these interpretations can be confusing for many, and it also poses restrictions on true type development as many are led to believe they can’t consciously use cognitive functions that do not exist in their preferred cognitive stacks.
I had someone claim I “couldn’t” be an ENTJ because my Enneagram tritype is 5-4-8, as opposed to the more classic 8 archetype. I’ve explained on more than one occasion that Enneagram is an entirely different kind of system that is rooted in the influence of behavioral epigenetics and not cognition. My use of Te-Se/Ni-Fi is very much in line with my Enneagram tritype.
It’s important to be open to being wrong and accepting the reality of blind spots. We all have them. I was comfortable being an “assertive” INTP for more than a decade, and I was resistant to ever being a “J” type, *especially* XXTJ, due to the archetype descriptions. I realized that if I was going to get anywhere with truly understanding the influence of cognition on how I navigate my world, I needed to strip away any presuppositions I held and start fresh with an open mindset. I welcome updating my mental frameworks when introduced to new information with a solid grounding in emerging research.
I spend a good amount of time in various MBTI groups, and I’ve been a big proponent of the CPT model, writing essay-like responses on breaking down and disseminating the information, and it has been well received by many. This is a huge plus, and CPT provided me the tools to accurately identify my 17-year-old as ENFP and not ENTP.

I often hear that INTJs for example cannot be physically affectionate, lively, open and gregarious because of "polr Fe". While there can always be a fraction of truth in these claims, to me they are huge red flags considering that for example ISTJs form almost a fifth of all men and they also supposedly share polr Fe. Everytime I hear that "xxxx" cannot do "x" I get quite cautious because not only does this cause people to be put in a box, it also contradicts all my previous understandings of how humans work and how much environmental factors play a role in these behaviors.
I do think this is why my personal type discovery journey has been all over the place and I cannot seem to settle on a type. Once I do, I hear somewhere that they do or do not do x and again I am put in a place of doubt. But as you said, it is part of the process and I take it more and more lightly when I settle on a new type as I know I could easily be and probably am wrong. Haha, I´m finding that my best elimination method is your "signs you´re not xxxx" series.

Indeed as you say those claims are a grain of truth blown out of proportion. The x can't do y thing is a source of aggravation for me - again, there is truth there (i.e. cognitive resistance) but as soon as *can't* enters the equation you know you've left reality.
I'm hoping that series will be super useful for people once its finished!

Yes gotta admit. I tend to boxing myself into one type over another, and i also type another person this way. but i realize that i could use all the function, but not all become my strength or my default. Well, the positive is i could use people's strength to achieve my goal by boxing them though. But i realize that i am too attached to that sometime, but i am quite open to other people's opinion actually. When many people say something about me i feel scared of who i am, but i kind of learn something. I learn to be more open, but my belief system is not that fluid for no reason, i need to do what i perceived to be right, and it has proven to be right overtime using my pattern recognition in internal reality that i perceive.

I'm glad a stumbled upon your channel. Thank you for addressing this. I've been feeling lost with the whole typology situation cz I don't fit into any type and the ones that were associated with me seem strange because of the stereotypes that I don't relate to. And I've been in this rabbit hole obsessively for months now. What I think I forgot in this journey was my purpose of why I wanted to be typed. I just wanted to understand and improve myself better and I think it's not a bad thing even if I'm mistyped but people take types way too seriously here. But as you said, it's a stagnant mindset that opposes growth and our entire psyche is not our type and TYPE IS FLUID.
I've also seen this toxic elitism you mentioned, of being a certain way to be part of some "type only" groups that push the idea that we should all be same based on a cognitive model and i didn't see the purpose of it either. People fighting over which type is better or who is a mistype and who can prove or justify being their type only to go nowhere near growth. It's such a detrimental tendency and I'm glad you addressed it..
"our cognition changes with time and context" and "we can expand on our functions and play around with them" need to be talked about a lot more than it is. We need more open discussions like this one to grow as individuals and society. Thank you for bringing this up.
This was such a helpful video.

This was timely as I’ve been having similar thoughts myself recently.
I’ve been going between wanting to clutch typology (mbti) to my heart and chucking it at the wall because of all the inconsistencies and limitations. Thus have come to start taking it "less seriously."
Having put perhaps too much stock into type, I’ve learned how I work, but forgotten who I am. In a sense. At least, I feel like I knew myself better *before* my typing journey. On the other hand I feel I’ve gotten to understand *other* people better thanks to typology. And I’ve also gotten to understand how my mind works regardless of type.
I’ve come to the conclusion I’m not a fan of the hierarchical model, but rather see it more like a pyramid with one preferred function at the top, supported by all the others. Or like a three-dimensional cube (cognitive functions) within a two-dimensional square (type code). The cube analogy is inspired by CPT.
Knights of the round table is also a good one I think, with one function as the king/leader and the rest as knights of equal worth regardless of origin and achievements.
For a long time I identified as INFP, but when diving into it, it didn’t feel quite right. In a recent discussion someone concluded I was ISFP and it felt good taking on that mantle, but the more I study with that in mind, the more I see very strong Ne-Si tendencies too. So, ISFP but leaning heavily to the INFP side of the spectrum? Or even the other way around. I also see INJ tendencies, though not anywhere near the level of actual INJs.
I saw in another comment you have some ISFP stuff in store. Looking forward to that.
    Take care. Cheers.

I don't understand attempts to weaponize typology; it's fun to assess other people but really the only thing wrong with mis-typing is the mis-representation that can potentially go along with it; the thought of such harm makes me shudder more than I can say - but I do think something that's almost more harmful is to reject open discussion about the matter; it's better to accidentally give faulty advice or jump to conclusions a little too hastily than it is to prevent honesty & growth; you can heal from mistakes - you can't heal from blindfolding all the doctors or locking up the jury!
But more positively speaking, I've enjoyed sorting out the cognitive differences by imagining a four-story building with the introverted & extroverted versions of each function playing tug-of-war on their respective floors (I like how you describe it as a "magnetic pull"!), representing the conflict of internal vs. external focus ... sounds silly, but I think it makes it easier if you don't know much about the cognitive functions because you might imagine yourself on a particular (let's say the feeling - ) floor from which you can ask yourself simply how hard was it to arrive at this floor? Now that you're here, what do you see? Do you see yourself wanting to assess the external events, or do you want more clarity to withdraw & discover your own internal reference? These sorts of questions can eventually help to compare your approaches & thought-processes to that of other people, and the world might start to make a little bit more sense!
You make many, many excellent points here, and personally I'm in the hypothetical stages of enneagram - and I like to say that "I identify as a two" - though I know that's not typical for INTJs and I share a lot of the same behaviors of the five, but if I am a five, then enneagram really doesn't seem to explain much for me 😝, so for practical purposes, I identify as a two but if you simply MUST call me a five I'll allow it!😄 Finding your type is definitely a process no matter what genre you're in -- much like this comment that must be one of the longest I've ever made on your videos! Thanks for reading if you've made it this far! Keep up the awesome work with your content!👍

It's funny, a couple of days ago, I thought to myself I am taking this too seriously and needed to tone it down. Thanks for the video, feels like it backs up what I was thinking.
I was getting a bit too conflicted with narrowing down to a type. Trying to narrow myself down to type where "no one will disagree if I say I am this type". I don't know why I was doing this, a lot of wasted energy as you said in the video lol. And I know I am naturally biased, and like to jump to conclusions, so it just make it's harder for me to "know" what the "right answer" is lol. I'm just at the point where I'm like "who cares".

Very great insight in this video. This is exactly the kind of approach people should have. I always explain it like... functions, at least in an archetypal sense, are very observable in people. This natural oppositional nature is something people inherently know about others in terms of balancing certain things, like freedom - order.
Understanding these tradeoffs allows you to explain typology to someone who does not know typology. You can use these archetypes that are known in society to sort of get feedback on your type in general. You must accept that it is very fluid and that at different stages in your life due to external factors or anything, you will not always be the same.
In terms of my own type journey, it's quite fascinating talking to my parents and closest friends who have witnessed the most of my life and have seen my growth directly over time. As a kid, I likely fell into a more ISTP cognitive stack (not really my own reports). I have actually already begun doing the thing of "wearing types" and I always suggest this to others. It is like a burning truth. The more uncomfortable it is, the more likely you are getting somewhere, whether that is growth or simply self-discovery.

That said, it has been more than a year since I began my journey of studying this personality typology, taking things from one system and another and putting them into my own system, and I have to say that the CPT has provided me with the best insights so far and your influence on my system is very much undeniable.
From what you said in the video I'm quite sure that you'd be open to referencing and peer-reviews, but I just want to make sure if that's ok for you if other people such as myself to take resources from the CPT (with citations, of course!) and put them in our own writings, videos, or even typing services because I have quite a bit of ideas to write about this subject, but I just feel like I need to say this to you, remembering how much the CPT has influenced my understanding. On a side note, I really don't mind recommending the CPT for anyone who is interested in typology and self-growth. Thanks!

Harry, do we have neurological links?
Just today I came to the conclusion about the different modalities that we employ. Not only in relation to a thinking pattern, behavior, or intent, and that they pertain to a type. But how you can actually take things from different types and ehnahnce your own. It's like a scavenging game where you don't have a definitive state of being, but this is the time when you shape it. Even if you have tracks instead of a hover platform, you can still have other options in designing what other systems like the "torso" to have or "head". I think that the only primary opposition is the domminant and the oppositional. The middle ones can be negociated. So the tracks are a given or the main program so that you can function, but you can still have the possibility and freedom to play with the others as well.
For instance, I can use subjective metaphoric assingation and this is my primary state. I see things in terms of metaphors Ni-Fi convergent. But I can also see things from a detached perspective of how components connect with each other Ne-Fe convergent, and why my intuitive feelings is like that by diving deeper into the semantic meaning of what means to have tracks or head in a literal sense or what it's properties are Ti-Si divergent, and then I accumulate data about those specific things and observe how they manifest Te-Se divergent. From there, I'm able to put together all the pieces based on what I gathered Se-Te convergent and to then estabilish a system or map that can be acted on Fi-Ni divergent. I take the metaphor Ni-Fi convergent, I think of how it connects Ne-Fe convergent, then I give it form Ti-Si divergent, then I accumulate data on those things Te-Se divergent, and then I put them all together Se-Te convergent, and finally, I act based on my new system Fi-Ni divergent. The problem is only that I always perceive the development of the system and see its dynamic and gather information about it Te-Se divergent. If I see that something is not working, then I need to go back to the drawing line and this time I don't only use Ti-Si divergent, but also Ne+Ti to see what could be the possible problems that have arised in it. Then the fixing happens by thinking of the repurposing possibilities of my current system with Ne-Te divergent and changing the components in it Se-Te convergent.
So the INTJ ego is the generator or initiator of the process, the ESFP subconscious is the expression, the ENTO unconscious is the troubleshooting center, and the ISFJ Super-ego is maybe reaching ubermensch and then having now flaws whatsoever or opposition between the ego and unconscious?
Anyways, this also helped me to use my systematic thinking. I actually I got in the rabbit hole of mbty in order to find my type, but also to develop my troubleshooting abilities and develop solutions and systems around it. I thought that if this experience would yield a truth, then it can be extrapolated in order to construct a sequence or alghoritm for truth itself with which you won't depend on particularites of the situation, but you would actually be able to abstractize them and use the general principle.
I'm open to your input or even criticism if you don't agree with me.
Also, I'm not attached to this system. It's because I have the courage of letting my position to be deconstructed that I can express my reasons. Because like you said, I apply them to see if they stand.
Also, I also saw that the best part is when someone can criticize you but it won't have a negative intent and instead it would be a constructive criticism.
Criticism becames so valuable when the intent is genuine and helps you in improving your system or personality as a whole.
Also, you can post a comment if you don't have any criticisms, not only to adress my comment, but to expand on your points in the video.
I think that the wonder is that you find out that it is like a video game where you have parameters set, but they can be fluid, more like an open world survival game, where you can optimize everything and you don't have neccesaruly hard limitations. Well, except death... :)

My pet peeve is not being mistyped but the lack of ethical and moral care towards “CONSUMERS” being mistyped and their rights. I can see it damaging to more vulnerable and sensitive people.
In other areas and other fields, consumers are given a space to share experiences and warn against unethical practices. In the personality typing community, there isn’t a space where consumers can offer unfiltered feedback on the services they pay for. Eat at a crappy restaurant or encounter a bad service… leave a Yelp or Google review. Not so much the case with typology and typists providing services.
I didn’t care so much as to whether or not typists got my type right. I was testing their methodologies and theoretical frameworks for identifying cognitive process. I saw a lack of care for providing typing services that were ethically and morally sound using a flawed instrument or biased judgement as well as blatant inconsistencies in their own understanding/interpretations of the functions. I mean, how can we have a conversation if everyone is on a different page even with themselves. It is an unregulated field and typists may or may not have their consumer in mind when charging whatever fees for subpar practice.
In addition, there is such a thing as gatekeeping the INFJ label and other types as a thing. Seeing the same “models” of type as “the standard” of type is false. Meaning typists who declare certain people as a certain type to fit the mold but don’t disclose or show the audience the people that they are unsure of type is deception. Basically, does the person fit the narrative of their system?
There lacks transparency and consensus which is a breeding ground for bias and that is why the scientific field overlooks personality typing as viable. If I’m an average person with adequate study in research and I can see the holes in the system and interpretation and the gap between consumer rights for purchasing services it’s obvious to people in the field. I think it’s important that consumers (“the average person”) are protected from people who might take advantage in providing services. I mean, we are saying “typing” should be taken with a grain of salt yet employers use established (and maybe in the future emerging systems) to determine a persons “work life position” which impacts earning potential. So, in retrospect, it is important.
I went to typists… I got INTJ mostly, followed by ISFJ and ISTJ, then ESTJ and ENTJ. But when typed by already established systems and by friends and family I got INFJ… which is what I tentatively hold as my type. This was a tip off that the broad perspectives of typing was not consumer considerate and could be damaging further. Once I accepted the type I think I may be, despite what the external information was telling me, then I was able to live more peacefully. I was flattered by what typists thought me to be (Si is freakin’ hard! LOL) but when I accepted my type (still holding it loosely though and testing against it) then I could see more clearly why others saw me that certain type and how/why it did or didn’t align.
But I have been typed by quite a few people and mediums, including Harry’s Cognitive Personality Theory and as a consumer I can say Harry offers one of the best services for understanding typing, cognition, and reaching a “type,” granted within his own system. He is quite thorough in how he approaches and assesses but not sure he knows just how bad other typists are in approaching typing with their systems. There are no disclaimers saying typing and the services paid for is like getting a tarot reading… to be held tentatively and with a flexible perspective (which is a recent thing). Still, how are the typists who are swindling people being held accountable?
I enjoyed seeing what each typist brought to the table. But I was also appalled by the lack of transparency and professionalism by some typists (not Harry). I realized… where do people go to get a refund LOL or report such experiences?
Some people want entertainment and some people want truth… and some people like to know what they are paying for… and that’s okay.

I've recently discovered your channel and I just wanted to share my story of mistyping here, I hope someone will find this journey interesting:
1)I got interested in typology like 4 years ago and since then there were many occasions of mistyping, I was in like 5 categories of IN-types, particularly
1.1)INFP - it made sense for me back then cause I'm kinda emotionally expressive and very sensitive to the feelings of others (I used to think F/T is about that, yes, I know, such a cringe but we all had our starting point somewhere, I'm not ashamed to admit that)
1.2)Then I got INTP (but it was a short trip from here to point 3 till I discovered the next type I thought is truly mine till I got to know your channel)
1.3)INTJ - I'm 100% Ni-dominant type, that's for sure, I studied Ni a lot (watched all of your Ni-related videos, including a comparison of INTJ/INFJ etc etc etc), so there was no doubt about that, I could write an entire essay about my Ni-based cognitive process but it's gonna take extremely long and I don't think anybody's interested so let's stay within the topic.
Generally, I'm more inclined to make things in a logical way, the way that makes sense for me, for my internal structure if you want but for some reason, I thought it's Te which it wasn't and I understood this after my fail with the highly organized job I used to have. I got fired and eventually, it became clear for me as day: I just don't possess convergent Te which would allow me to sustain that kind of work easily which led me to further self-exploration and I got
1.4)INFJ - I used to think Fe wasn't about me AT ALL, like NO FREAKING WAY I HAVE FE, cause, you know, typical Fe descriptions are...let's say, represent overly heroic kind of Fe, a typical superhero mentality which wasn't and isn't about me at all, but when I've read your book, everything was spot on, especially your CPT model which I personally find the most accurate among all the books about personality types I've read (and I've read plenty, not only in English but also in Russian which is my native language)
We have a different typology system - socionics which is kinda rough if you ask me, it's interesting and got some valuable points but generally, it lacks a system, it lacks a solid foundation, socionics here is more of a fun thing to do, oh I'm Napoleon which isn't in good terms with, let's say, Balzak, those kinds of things are extremely superficial and lacking any kind of value, and I don't think it brings any more development to the overall typology systems around the world hence I disliked it, maybe it's just not for me, who knows
So, after all those years I finally came to terms with who I am and I never felt that comfortable within this label for my entire life, I always tested high on both, Ni AND Ti in cognitive functions-based tests, and I never really understood, why. Occasionally there were some signs of high Si and Fe values as well, I was like wtf is going on, is it even possible? Maybe MBTI doesn't work altogether and I made things up?
But turned out INFJ fits me perfectly:
    - Dominant Ni
    - Convergent aux Ti - I've read about your archetypes kind of journey and I was extremely Ni-Ti (convergent way of development) based type of person back in school which made me think I'm kind of smarter than everyone else, which gave me some unusual kind of vibe, of course, it wasn't true but I can't deny I had some weaker episodes in my life as well and it's ok to face it, you shouldn't feel embarrassed cause, as Harry already stated, without making mistakes how can we do things right?), currently it (Ni+Ti) gives me the passion to even continue my research about personality types and I never feel tired cause of it, I always wanted to create some kind of a system, where I would've felt comfortable but I managed to come in terms with my own perfectionism and I'm just enjoying all the way through understanding typology (kinda feels like the positive influence of Se)
    - Divergent Fe - this one made me feel like I'm a disaster, honestly, when it comes to relationships with other people, only now, when I'm almost 25, I feel like I can actually develop solid Fe without the constant need to rationalize or teach them (kinda my weak point, I see mistakes/potential shortcomings and I tend to think that other people can see it too but they can't nor they should be), I have the best friend ENTP (which was mistyped as an ENFP for a long time cause she never really admitted her divergent Ti either, it's still kinda hard for her but I see no points of Te whatsoever so I'm pretty sure about her type as well)
    - And oppositional Se made me interesting in the external world, my favorite hobbies are related to Se and I ADORE doing them
Anyways, I've written a hella lot even though it wasn't my intention (as usual, I can never suppress the need to PROPERLY explain something), thank u again a lot for your insight, I hope you will continue to help other people in the future! Best wishes!

Since you're a bit into socionics, it seems to me that the NiTi subtype of INFJ you identify as is Gulenko's "harmonizing" subtype, right? But please remember that is not the case for all INFJs, NiTi is just one of four variants.

Though my partner isn't into exploring what isn't definitively concrete, he humoured me last night while I explored recently following Ren's video 🙂 while ruminating on Jung and Freud (in the context of their respective approaches to psychology) Jung is fluid, like a bucket of water, it's well thought out and not rigid in its application, a little can be tipped out/poured in without losing credibility and adaptability.
Whereas Freud is bricks. Rigid and subject to breaking if something isn't correct (not to say Freud didn't have any strength to his work, as it's used still today, there's just little to no movement in application)
I think this could be a difference between Te/Fi and Ti/Fe. Also not to say that between the axis' there's no fluidity in Te/Fi, and no rigidity in Ti/Fe (and I hope I don't sound like an arsehole), but I could be onto something in how the various systems that are involved in the community approach typology as a whole
I like the idea of trying on different hats (as the infamous 16p quiz spat out INFJ, tried on the hat, and I'm not 😂) I agree to not take quiz results so seriously, and be aware of potential biases 🙂 like with anything on the internet, there's misinformation (intentional or not), the fun is in the exploration 😉
Thank you, Harry, for being fluid 🙂 you're appreciated!

Thank you very much for all the content you provide Harry. You present in a professional, science based manner, that avoids unhealthy stereotypes. I have some questions, and I would be very grateful if you could answer them, or produce a video focusing on these issues.
I found it refreshing when you mentioned in a video that ENTPs often mistype as INFJs; though many in the MBTI community, that focus on stereotypes and observable behaviours, rule out the notion of these types being mistaken very quickly, I think it's an incredibly valid point. I feel like I’m not sure whether I’m an ENTP or an INFJ. I think I have both Ti and Fe. Could you give a detailed comparison between the two types?
In relation to this, there seems to be a stereotype out there that ENTPs, due to ‘fourth place’ Si, struggle with routine and seek variety and adventure on a daily basis. Is this accurate, on a cognitive level? Are some ENTPs actually quite routined, preferring of the familiar and comfort seeking?
Furthermore, is it possible for an ENTP to actually have well developed Si (say, even in their early 20s), and actually be quite a conscientious, practically minded person?
I know it is unwise to rely on personality tests, but, I’ll share some information now to give you a picture of where I’m at. I have tested once as an ENTP, a few times as an INFJ, and actually as an ENTJ a few times (I don’t think I do have Te in first or second place, but I believe I sometimes get ENTJ results due to a fair amount of behavioural conscientiousness).
Thank you very much for reading this. Keep up the good work!

    • @timefortee

You are right about ENTPs very very (very) often genuinely believing themselves to be INFJs. (Many prominent "INFJ" UA-camrs come to mind (no, FJ is _actually_ INFJ lol)).
And even as an INFJ it has not always been easy for me to distinguish the two sometimes (when the ENTP in question is gifted), they can be similar on a deep level. (I'm thinking of a large number of big actors and a UA-camr...)
As an NiFe I feel the closest connection to gifted ENTPs, not ENFJs or NFPs. I think we are linked on an archetypal level.
P.S.: ENTPs have 2 Si subtypes, perhaps you are one (TiSi or FeSi).

For one year and a half I mistyped myself as INFJ and every test was giving me this answer, but guess what, I am ENTP.
If you are curios, this is my journey.
It starts with me taking the 16 personalities test that, of course resulted me as INFJ. I started reading about this type and it seemed cool and so interesting and so rare... And I thought "Oh, so that's why people don't understand me"... What a childish assumption.. But I didn't stop there. I was hungry for more validation. Was I really an INFJ? I started watching youtube videos, learning about the cognitive functions. I was holding into my Ti and Fe, these 2 made me sure I was an INFJ... And I started learning the patterns of an INFJ in a test :) And I was choosing the right answers because, of course, that was me. Yeah sure, deep down inside I wanted to be INFJ because they are cool.
I took a break from mbti. After a while I tested myself again, found more sites, etc. I was still choosing the "correct" answers, but there were some questions that were out of my patterns and I was answering truthfully to them. Oh, it seemed that I had very high Ne. And I was conflicted. That couldn't be true, right? If my Ni was high, would Ne be the same? Maybe, whatever. So I continued believing that I was INFJ until I really took my time to understand the functions, create some patterns for them and ask people around me about my tendencies. Oh and I was so disturbed because I was sure now that I was an INTP. I didn't study the Exxx types :) Who me? An extrovert? Pffft. No.
And I travelled through the introverted types back and forth. I was none. I was blind to my Ne and very blind to my Si. I can't be using Si, that one sucks, I don't even know how it's like to use your Si. Meanwhile I was escaping a chaotic part of my life by starting to organize my home because it made me feel at peace within my head. And I continued researching and I decided to go to the extroverted part of the realm anddd there it was... ENTP... Chaos... Fe a bit of a demon, what the heck is Si... Yes. I am an Ne-Ti ENTP. That's why I have introverted tendencies!
It was an unusual discovery and I really love to share it because it's an acomplishment and now, if I am mistyped again, I will forever give up on MBTI until next month.

    • @timefortee
      @timefortee 2 роки тому +1

That's so funny, I had the opposite happen to me hahha Tested as INTP upon discovering the MBTI, thought it fit and went along with it but then took a break from typology cause things weren't adding up (I realized I had too much Fe for INTP but not enough Extraversion for ENTP, but was definitely iNtuition first etc...). When I came back after the break I looked into CFs more closely and realized I was INFJ after some tests gave me that, I was so shocked and it was too unexpected a turn of events (I had been brainwashed to view INFJs are magical mystery creatures). Now I distrust tests and don't believe most INFJs online are actually INFJs, even if it sounds rude. I can't help it, even prominent "INFJ" UA-camrs are mostly ENTP, so...

    • @catherineb855
      @catherineb855 2 роки тому +1

It's funny how real INFJs are shocked when they discover their type. I think most of people feel like that, but in the end it's really hepful, especially because you can now observe your struggles more clearer and try to improve them. And I think ENTPs and INFJs can be easily confused because of their middle functions. Some people don't understand the difference between Ne and Ni, or Se and Si or worse... N and S. Also, ENTPs tend to be "introverted" because of Ne-Ti. I am that way and most of the time Ti is killing enthusiasm of Fe and yes.. The more extroverted ENTPs are the ones that use Fe more than Ti. I don't know if I ever met an INFJ in real life, but I would love to.

    • @timefortee
      @timefortee 2 роки тому +1

@@catherineb855 Yes, but it's not just the middle functions we have in common but also being iNtuitives first. I think there is something really special uniting these two types, that's why even in pop culture they keep being mistaken for one another (mostly, ENTPs being mistaken for INFJs because they can be extremely masterful at Fe to the point of making it seems like they're an Fe dom or aux, best examples are big name actors who excel at what you'd expect to be Feeling domains).

It's good to mistype. It means you've well developed most of your cognitive functions. So absolutely, the best type is no type. Types tend to be very fluid, I agree. In Astrology, I am mutable in my sun, moon and rising sign. Take it as you will, but I love connecting the dots between many theories, and recognizing the fact that I am very adaptable. It's not that we mutable signs lack the commitment to stay. It's that not many things are worth it, and we are very picky about what we decide to ground ourselves on. We lack impulsivity and initiative, in the healthy sense, but not the connection with reality, if you get what I mean. But mistyping only adds to the experience. I'm still not sure wether I would be typed as an ISFJ, INFJ or ENTP. Why not all of them?

Reality seems to be both continuous and discrete, non-separate and separate. Like you can see the outlines of objects like trees, tables, doors or whatever but also there's also no separation between the objects and their environments. So ultimately there is no separation between anything. Anyway, symbols and language are pure separations or cross-sections of reality, so the word "tree" doesn't include how the environment and the tree are really one system. That is to say everything external and internal is one thing. So it is with cognitive functions, they are symbols that cut sections out of reality but the actual reality is that we have a continuous side as well that cannot be pegged down with symbols. But we also have that discrete side which is what makes cognitive functions so useful.
It seems to me that people with Ni-Se axis can perceive the continuous side of reality easier while people with Si-Ne axis seem to have an easier time perceiving the symbols or discrete side of reality.
    Anyway lol.

I want to access these other ways to view and engage with the world and I would love to know how.

Letting go of Fi & Ti and Se & Ne in this case is a big equation, but letting go does absolutely work with lenses as it entails in this instance generalist association-forming absent any external medium, inspiration or general experience. It is sadly too much of a topic to cover in a video - my coaching work tends to involve a good amount of planning in between sessions for this reason, as what letting go entails depends on a person's life.

The ability to remember people's faces and names very precisely, can it be a manifestation of Ne-Fe? I mean, it might sound more like good memory or even a little connected to Si users, but in my case, it feels like I do it without knowing, a natural talent (maybe not the right word here). Or you can say that I am very observant of others, to the extent that I notice small details that reveal about the person I'm talking to and unconsciously memorizing it. I have many many friends and I always love engaging in a new environment, for I can make new connections and put on a brand new persona. And I also have that fear to be on bad blood with people, sometimes I can imagine having conversations with them irl, or what will their responses be if I say this or do this. I think that in terms of seeing people as their unique selves rather than projecting one's rigid idea of what their type is supposed to be onto them, it's beneficial to see type more like an exaggerated and generalized archetype, that just serves as a guide to bring awareness to certain patterns within people more easily rather than assuming that one's idea of each type needs to apply to every single person who belongs to it because it usually doesn't account for individual variation (but I guess seeing type as fluid can serve that purpose as well).
I also wanted to say that I don't think that using an active process of elimination is always that beneficial, especially in the beginning. Usually people have an idea of a few types they're most likely to be anyway, but encouraging someone to do so might actually make it harder for them to find their true type because the characteristics that are attributed to a type might have caused them to eliminate it, but if those aren't actually relevant to this type, then it would make finding their type a lot harder (if it's their actual type) because it's harder to identify with something you've never given much thought seeing yourself as and it actually helps a lot of people to "try on" multiple types before finally settling on one.
What personally helped me to decide on my own type is being more aware of the different interpretations of Jungian typology because especially online people seem to mix a lot of different systems together, but they usually still call it "MBTI" even though it's actually pretty removed from it in several instances. In MBTI communities, I've seen a lot more references to Jung's original theory (which can definitely be beneficial in understanding the theory behind the MBTI), but since MBTI was supposed to be more than solely an interpretation of his work, there are obviously still differences that often aren't taken into account. As an INFP, I used to identify as an ISFJ for example, among other things because I related to the Jungian introverted irrational type the most, but after getting more familiar with the actual theory behind the MBTI, this distinction isn't really that simple in the latter because while Myers acknowledged the difference between rational and irrational types, a lot of the things that are related to rationality are part of MBTI J and that of irrationality of MBTI P, so being an introverted irrational type in terms of Jung doesn't always equal being an IxxJ in MBTI. And that's just one of the bigger differences between those two systems.
When it comes to figuring out the most accurate way to see the world through the Jungian lens in some way (including through MBTI, Socionics, etc), then it can be good to use elements of different systems and come up with one's own way of interpreting it even if it goes against the established rules of the original system, but if it's just about finding one's MBTI type, then being confronted with a lot of knowledge from different systems can be really counterproductive.
I also like videos like this one, that are more about things related to MBTI, typology or the community without being centered around one or two specific types and especially after the last few videos it's a nice change btw ^^

@@pland5057 Why? That it used to be there first doesn't make it more accurate. As far as I know, Jung was also mostly just writing down the things he noticed within his patients and not larger groups of people (which is a problem if you want to create a system that's universally true). His observations could have been very dependant on the people of his area and time, while there have been lots of studies on MBTI regarding different times and cultures, which probably wasn't the case with Jung.
The Jungian types as he described them in chapter X of his book weren't supposed to be representative of the average person anyway (so it holds less value for people who want to use type for more practical matters), while MBTI types are actually supposed to hold true for a lot of people.
