  • Picking the right place to stay at the‪@sturgismotorcyclerally‬can be intimidating. the rally area is huge, from the Badlands National Park area East to as far west as Gillette, Wyoming, and as far south as Custer State Park, Sturgis nuts stay all over the place. My Favorite places since I am an RVer are Glencoe at the ‪@SturgisBuffaloChip‬but there are also great hotel options and tenting is always on the table. In this video we talk about picking the area, then we'll go into some options to consider. As always, let me know in the comments what you like to do and anything I missed. And feel free to send me questions via e-mail at damonk@professional-monkey.com.

I like your videos! Very informative and easy to watch! I have been a Sturgis local for the past 30+ years so I know quite a bit about the rally and you are very spot on with your knowledge of what’s going on during the rally. I am one of the locals who loves the rally and I’ve also been on 2 wheels my entire life. From the people you meet to the fun parties that go on all around it’s a great feature our small town has.

I live 10 miles from Sturgis. If you only want to come to Sturgis to ride the roads I would suggest coming a week or two early or staying a week later the roads are much more fun to ride but there's less traffic unless idiots trying to run you off the road. Most of the fatalities that happened here are people who rent bikes or only ride their bike couple months out of the year. I've lived here for over 40 years

Until we all leave at 05:30 AM...... 20 rides booking out at the same time....lol

Planning on going this year (first time), was thinking Rapid City, since gonna go for rides, not much on main street. BUT Im also going to see Lynyrd Skynyrd, dont want to ride back after the concert, like you are pointing it out. Where would you suggest to stay instead?

My wife and I went up to Sturgis the week after this year, and we had a lot of fun and enjoyed it. It worked out great for us because we don't really do people very well. Ended up her bike broke down before we even got into South Dakota though, and we had to have her bike towed to black hills harley, and move stuff around because of course it was sunday, and we both hopped on my bike and continued our vacation. But I'm currious, do you take $ for repairs, or have some set aside in an account or something, if so how much?

For all the rallies up until now I've minimized my cost and frustration by staying in Ohio. In 2022 That is supposed to change. Will be staying in a friends luxurious RV out in Spearfish at a KOA. Hoping it doesn't suck. Will be out doing rides every day so will probably come into Sturgis and Deadwood to do the strips once that week and that's it. I'm too old for the overpriced Chip shenanigans. To say I'll get away with doing Sturgis on a shoestring budget is a probably a huge understatement. Unless of course my 05 RK breaks down on me.

Monkey, good mornin from Texas....I went to sturgis in 1995. And I stayed in a affordable place that a friend that's gone before did. 4 friend went, 2 of them flew and the other guy and myself drove over. The reservation were made by one of the guys that flew. Anyways these guys missed the connection flight causing us to loose our reservation. Anyways the other guy who drove with me, had the idea to check out the classifieds in raid city. We stayed in a two bedroom basement that was damn nice for half the price. So I just wanted to let you know that the classifieds are a great way to find g a place on rapid city.

I stay at creekside campground across the highway from the chip. Quiet hours after 2200. 3 hot meals a day, convenience stand, good showers and nice holes in the ground for pooping. It's pretty inexpensive and they also have rv pads. Not sure what you get with the RV pads, but I really enjoyed the stay. I tented there for 25 a night without a reservation. Da Bus stops there too, so a ride into town is easy to get.

I went in 2009. We found a farmer that let us stay in his field in tents. There was thirty of us, and he let us rent the field for $45 for all of us. One of the guys rented a couple porta potties and a couple Porta showers. All the guy asked was that we leave it as clean as it was when we got there. His place was about twenty miles from the town of Sturgis. He was an old timer biker and joined in the party too. Probably never find another situation like that again as long as I live.

I stay in Sturgis right off the exit 30 to Days End Campground. I've been staying there off and on for the past 22 + years. Great location, affordable, bathrooms, good experience with some real Rally goers and really not that crowded at all! We can get anywhere we need to be any time of the day and they have coin-op showers and laundry and a bus to and from Glencoe, Buffalo Chip or anywhere you want to go and the price was pretty damn cheap I thought. They have a stage, live music, sometimes strippers... that gets a little dicey. A few clubs camp there as well and it's a really mellow atmosphere.
But then I don't take my RV to the rally, it's just a good time on the bike and making the ol' lady rough it!
EDIT: also TONS AND TONS of shade! Yeah baybeeee!

Never been able to go to Sturgis, although I've often thought about it. My friends in Redrum have asked me to ride with them several times. Good guys, by the way. They have also asked me to join multiple times. Love these guys. We are all Brothers, even though I do not wear the patch. Which is humbling. Just hasn't been in the cards. Have a 2001 Heritage, Twin Cam 88, suede green and black. Only 184 of those made in the US and a 1979 Ironhead, Paucgho frame with DNA Springer I built. I'm 66, as of yesterday. Blind in one eye. And the other one seems to want to follow suit. And, of course, the club rides at night. I don't. Safety first. Plus, I don't want to die yet. On the other hand, when I go blind in the other eye, I still have one more ride in me. But, just one. That will probably be my last. But, I'm droning on. Sounds like something Deadpool would say. I used to live in Sanford, West Palm beach for a while. Grandparents took us to St. Andrews State Park every year in Panama City. Went to the beach every day. Love the beach. Haven't been in decades. If I ever make it back down that way, I would love to meet you in person. You seem to be a really decent person (hard to find, by the way). And knowledgeable about the biker life. Admire what you do for the kids, too. I raised three daughters. Good man. Sorry to take so much of your time. Just wanted you to know how refreshing it is to see someone honestly and intelligently explaining the truths of life on 2 wheels. Thanks. As a side note, waiting on my cam chain tensioners to arrive. 38,000 miles. Twin Cams, right? Love your stuff. Keep it up.

DA Bus is a lifesaver. If you want to drink and bar hop it's way way way cheaper than a DUI. I have never had a DUI in Sturgis, but know many who have and if you get one be ready to spend at least 2K to get out. Lawyers and fines are super high during rally.

Totally agree about staying where you end your day. My first year there over twenty years ago , found myself riding through the hills at 2AM in dense fog. It was probably 50 degrees ,but felt much colder in a sleeveless t-shirt. Trying to keep up with 4 drunks that had been riding those hills for years. Just waiting for Bambi to jump out. Single sealed beam headlamp that almost lit the fog enough to see the taillight ahead of me. Some how we survived.

I'm sure, doing what you do, you get some really weird comments from time to time. You might even think this is one of those but, lets see.
I saw some videos where you put out some really good info. You make comments that are morally sound, like the video where you saw the LE prospects inappropriately touch the topless girl. & typically you make it a point to show respect to all, except Christians. Why is that? You start your video using the Christians Leader name as a term of disgust, you say later you have little in common with Christians. I'm the first to say there are a lot of people that say they are Christians and say & do things that aren't Christ like. But you just seem disturbed by Christians in a way that goes against what you portray yourself to be when you talk about others in biker culture. I have to say, I've seen Christian MC, MM, & the like have just as much respect, & zeal for biker culture as you do. That's not cool. I say this with no explanation of you suddenly showing any respect towards people of faith, but like you said in one of your other videos, some times you just got stand up for what's right.
    With all do respects,
    Shiny side up.

Sturgis hasnt been worth going for decades. I stopped going when it stopped being about the biker and biker lifestyle, and started being about how much money you have in your wallet. I can lay down miles, enjoy the ride and save my wallet in my own part of the country.

I did camp ez ride last year at sturgis in the Buffalo chip and I got a state they are some stand up people they make sure you’re taken care of at the Buffalo chip though they can’t do the continental breakfast according to the Buffalo chip rules I liked it so much that that’s what I’m doing for this year

You do an awesome job giving us a realistic run down of Sturgis. I'm new to riding and definitely want to go and I feel like you give us a great blue print and of what we can do and expect!

My horrible horrible Sturgis idea: I wanna see Sturgis when there's NOT a rally going on.
I'll be able to enjoy the roads, rides, town and even the mom/pop shops that are ALWAYS there trying to make a living.
I know what a motorcycle looks like. Hell I know what a propped up corporate bar that's gonna be there for the rally and then GONE looks like.
I already know what 1000s of bikes and 1000s of people crammed into a small space looks like.
I wanna see the REAL place without the rally. It'll be quiet and layed back. You won't need pepper spray. You won't need to lock your bike down every time you shut it off. You won't need ear plugs. Ha ha ha
Ahhh retirement goals. In a few years I'll prove it. ☕🤠🎙🐕

As we all know The price of gas is way out of line already , Then you add Rally price on top of that , hmmm . I sure hope there's no shortages on those away from everything rides like Titty Tuesday . I'll be hauling a small can in my saddle bag this year .

I rent a tent space on the south end of town in Sturgis and it’s about $100 for a week. She has a shower and a bathroom set up, but the best part is she has driveway parking so I can get my bike off the road. We walk in to town and see the sides, but then we are right by the highway if we want to get out and ride, but it’s not so loud that we hear bikes all night. One thing I did notice was when we were walking into town, there are a lot of bedsheets down over fences spray painted advertising tentspaces for cheap. I could see how somebody could easily make a couple thousand dollars just putting up some tentspaces in their backyard and providing a porta and the shower

This may be a dumb question, but if you’re in the first category that doesn’t give a rats ass about people and just wanna ride, Would it be beneficial to go the week before, ride the places that are “iconic” or good rides? Then just do like a 4 day pass for the first part of it? (Another way to save money possibly). Never been to a rally but I plan to start soon. Maybe do a quick video and suggest some of the smaller weekend rally’s?

The more I hear the better Sturgis gets... Book well in advance was a good tip for the campgrounds... Weekend bender would be fun 😂🍻 though those Monday mornings 🤢 haven't done that since my 20s... Also leaned drinking in direct sunlight makes those hangovers last for days 🤔 lesson learned 😂🍻☀️🤢🤢🤢
