- 7 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Water Orchids With Ice Cubes
One of my biggest irritations with orchid growing is the amount of misinformation that is circulating both on the internet and greenhouses as to how to water your orchids. One of the biggest problems in orchid care is either overwatering or underwatering. Finding that perfect equilibrium is one of the most difficult for beginner orchid growers to master. But how do ice cubes interfere with this process?
In this video, I will explain what ice cubes do for your orchid and why you shouldn’t water orchids with ice cubes. Ice cube watering will kill orchid tissue on the leaf and stunt growth over time. Cold ice water will not decrease display life but it will deter overall life span and the quality of the orchid’s life, hindering a rebloom. The drop in temperature does not promote orchid health in roots or leaves.
To prove my points listed above, I will be using the same resources and arguments that the producers of the biggest company in the United States which promotes the ice cube method, Just Add Ice, uses.
I have nothing against this company. In fact, I bought a blue orchid from them and it’s still alive and well-no ices cubes used. I’m against the sales mechanism that they are using to promote sales is harming many orchid growers as they kill orchids over and over again. That is the whole point of this video, to save your orchids.
I’d prefer you to understand the reasoning, the why and how, behind orchid care, then to just enter a fixed routine and not really comprehending why you do what you do. This is what takes orchid care to the next level.

This UA-cam Channel is the by-product of extensive research on how to recreate that environment inside my home.
By no means do I consider myself an expert but I'm an avid learner and willing to share the little I know with others. There are thousands of different ways to care for orchids, and the more we share, the more we learn.
What started out as a hobby has now grown into a passion, producing an online resource of quality information on how to connect with nature.

I think this is my favorite video on the just a dice topic.
The only thing I got a little critical about was I find I lose blooms very quickly at 60f.
Because I use aquarium water my starting point is now 80f. This is quite warm but I don't think I've gone around the other bend yet at least not for warm growing orchids like phalaenopsis.
Hi Victor,
Thank you for watching that video! I know it was long... I appreciate your comment! Yeah, I can't imagine giving 55 F water to orchids. Mine is always room temperature. I haven't tried the 80F, so I might do that, just to see if there is any reaction.
I am so glad I found you! I have so much to learn. I promise I will never ever use ice again on my orchids. Thank you!
Hi Claudia, I'm glad the videos are helping
Look at Amanda Brockovich exposing the lies! I love it, great video 😂❤️
Love it!!
Hi Daniel!
Hahahah! I love it. :) I'm still laughing and I had read this comment yesterday, but I didn't have time to respond to it... Thanks for making my day! :)
Thank you Amanda it’s always very good Information
Hi Sajeevi, Thank you watching and for leaving a comment. I appreciate it! You are so kind! :)
Oof. I was gifted a beautiful orchid and was told to water with ice. One of the 4 stems is turning yellow and I discovered your page. I'm learning so much!
Hi 007nerual, I'm so glad the video about ice cubes helped. Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment. I appreciate it.
@@Orchideria your content is so helpful! I'm also from the midwest (and grew up in Topeka!) so the information is extra valuable since our climates are the same.
Oh my gosh! Small world! That is so great to hear! ;)
I have a very nice and healthy four orchids for the past two years blooming and growing new steams, and I have been watering it only with ice cubes .. I am confused
They won't die with ice cubes, but they'll do a lot better without them.
🤠👍
Hi Tally! Thanks for watching and for the cute comment. :) How has your orchid hormone research been coming along?
@@Orchideria I think I will stick with the commercial produce I have been using. It is growing plants like crazy. Had a dead philodendron hanging pot that froze last winter. I waited to May to see if it would come back with no luck. No leaves and mostly black rhizomes. I mean no growth, no leaves, no nothing. Was about to throw it out, but gave it a squirt of hormones, and shoots started coming out all over the place. Now it has bigger leaves than it ever did since i bought it.
Still have too much sun on my Cats and am working on shade cloth in the right amount. Want to give them all they can take without burning.
The stuff I am using is called Essentials and the anti fungus is called Companion. Great stuff for now, it makes roots and shoots grow like crazy.
Thanks for answering! I apprecaite it.
