Hi Danny! Before anyone ever told me that it would be ok to water an orchid with ice cubes, I knew that it would be an idiotic thing to do to a tropical plant. You have confirmed my suspicions. I have been watching your videos for about 3 months and it is quite obvious that you are the ultimate authority on caring for orchids. I never would have thought that an otherwise healthy looking orchid that I buy in Home Depot would need to be repotted as soon as you bring it home. No wonder all my past orchids would wither down to nothing in time. Your videos are the only ones I watch to get common sense info for orchid care. Thanks for all you do!
Sad to hear that people are still being tricked that giving ice is ok :(
Last Saturday there was an orchid show and sale near me, and despite having enough orchids already, I couldn't help but purchase a few more :P
One of them is called a dendrobium antennatum, have you heard of it? It's really cute.
Keep up with the videos!
HI Aiki, yes I know it it's a gorgeous orchid, very wild looking :D congrats on your purchase!! we can never stop adding orchids in our collections :P
Thank you. I was really confused by the "just add ice" bit. I tried adding ice once or twice, but it was very counter-intuitive so I skipped doing it and went back to normal watering practices. It makes sense that this would hurt a plant that normally grows in 80 degree plus temperatures.
+Mary Finn Hi Mary, that was a good decision :) in time ice might seriously 'burn' the roots, better stick to normal room temperature water.
Yes. It's my first orchid. I've grown "orchid cacti" but not orchids. I rescued a phal that a neighbor had no patience to bring into bloom again even though I begged her to keep this expensive rare plant. My first bloom spike has started to grow.
".....well. there isn't any." ha ha! Great video. FYI, I do have several phals from said company that are healthy and beautiful, as you said is possible. They are doing well for me but I have never once ever put ice on them ;)
Hehe there you go, there is nothing wrong with them, at least no more than in the case of other companies, just DON'T ADD ICE! haha good motto :P
MissOrchidGirl Brilliant! "Don't Add Ice Orchids". Someone should start that company ;)
I agree with you Miss Danny, great job you really explained what is really right on caring orchids. :)
thanks for the information I have leant a lot about orchid and how to care for them.
+Cheryl McDougall Hi, thanks for watching, glad you enjoy my videos :)
I always thought using ice was a stupid idea, plus the roots wouldn't get evenly moistened this way. These plants never encounter ice in their native environment. Why would someone think this is a good idea?
Thank you!
Thanks for the advice. I just bought my first orchid from the local Lowes store and I put the ice cubes for a few minutes then took them out, after I thought about it for a few minutes... Should I water it now or wait a few days? I don't know if it has been watered at the store. I examined the bark and roots, they seem moist. should I wait a few days? Thanks!
draco003 Hi, you did good in removing the cubes :) yes if the media looks moist just wait for it to dry up :) I am assuming you have a Phalaenopsis orchid? here is a guide on how to know when to water it and how to water it ua-cam.com/video/2sO3IrT4AA8/v-deo.html
harra719....That is awesome! The phal I got is already full bloomed and one of the flower spiked has been cut way down to the base so it won't be blooming for awhile I guess. I got another phal two days ago with three buds on it...hopefully I will see flowers in a few months or so. Did the money tree give you money? xD
harra719 I just want to make a side note here: I have nothing to do with viewers advising other viewers to water with ice cubes, so for those of you guys reading these comments and thinking that watering with ice would be a good idea, just keep in mind I did not advise you to do this, I actually advised against it. Other than that you can experiment at your own expense as much as you'd like ;) Thanks!

harra719 yes that's a nice marketing slogan, I am talking about natural habitat of orchids, conditions they are adapted to in nature, science behind orchid growing, that sort of stuff, not keeping orchids in no drainage arrangements for 3 months and then down the garbage bins. Ok, try to read proper articles about growing orchids, if I don't inspire you any credibility, read the American Orchid Society articles, see what orchid experts say, see what orchids are all about, what they experience in their habitat, how they flourish in a home and then we'll talk more on the just add ice thing.
Thank you so much for this video. At the store I seen a baby orchid on sale for 2.00 but my husband said we can't get it because we don't have ice. I told him my grandma never used ice so now I can prove to him that the add ice is wrong and a big no no. Maybe now I can get those baby orchids :) thank you so much. I gotta look at your other video about orchids. But I'll ask just in case you didn't post anything like this. What happens when the flowers die? I seen in a different video that they cut the stem 2 inches from where the flowers was. Is that okay? Or will it kill my whole plant?
Hi, I'm glad you found this video useful :) yeah the ice thing is just some marketing slogan, nothing good comes out of it :) about the spike, here's a video I made explaining what can happen next with your orchid spike and how you could cut it ua-cam.com/video/Umv-SWrFijU/v-deo.html
Dani, I received a Just Add Ice orchid from a friend. I noticed the roots look different. Will it die if I use distilled water instead?
Hi, those orchids are the same as any other phalaenopsis orchid and require the same care. Lukewarm water is always ideal, ice can damage roots in time!
MissOrchidGirl I thought so. Thank you so much.
Thanks for your information. For some reason however, I have had success with the ice cube technique. I now have 5 healthy orchids, 3 of which have given me reblooms 3 times. Over the past 3 years using Ice cubes to water has been my only technique. The one time I did water one of my orchids through pouring water I lost it. Can you explain why I am having success with the ice cubes? Thanks again.
and this is why this is a poor video. the plethora of success cannot be summarily dismissed.
Same here
I wrap the end in burlap before adding ice and than make sure the water heats up
OutbackIA still a horrible idea :) ok imagine your orchid is in bark, you place that damn cube on one side.. water will start to drain on that side only. Bark is not absorbent as moss is, it will only get a little wet on that particular side.. rest of the pot will stay dry and the orchid will get dehydrated. Just stop the whole ice thing it can only get you in trouble at some point, it's a shame companies resort to that type of horrible marketing, and I am a person who supports orchid companies if they are good. This however.. no fricking way. Good luck!
MissOrchidGirl
Thanks. I did stop my use of ice cubes a while ago, because it didn't distribute the water evenly.
hi, I recently went on vacation and I come to see that my orchids leafs have fallen out but the roots are nice and healthy, so my question is, is the orchid still good or is there nothing I can do? because I only have roots no flowers or leaves.
Oh ok thanks alot Rita..
NANA N NIKKO Hi Nana, well first determine the cause of the leaves falling. If it's crown rot, treat immediately with hydrogen peroxide 3 % and cinnamon powder, I have a video showing how to do this here and it actually works Attempting to rescue an Orchid from crown rot it is important to stop the rot because it can advance to the roots. If the roots are ok, the orchid might bounce back and start producing new leaves, or even basal keikis, but first it's important to stop any infections. Hope this helped and good luck!
Oooh ok I will check on this thanks so much..
hello danny
i buy cattleya and they are in bad shape, they dont have root, what am i supposed to do with my cattleya
Hi Frank, first you need to repot your cattleya in fresh media and a suitable pot. You can add whatever type of media works well for you, as long as it is destined for orchids. Cut away all the dead and mushy roots and also you can wash the remaining roots and spay them with hydrogen peroxide 3% to kill off any pests and fungus. Pot your orchid in media and stabilize it with a stake if it moves around. keep it hydrated, don't let the pot get bone dry until the orchid will produce more roots, I noticed that a top layer of sphagnum moss helps out a lot! I will try to make a video on this very soon :)
ok i try but
there are no remaining roots in my cattleya. the pseudobulb become shriveled. how many day to produce new root? i want to save this cattleya orchids reply ASAP. thank you
Only mentioning the cons and not mentioning the pros isn't really a good way to prove your point. It sounds a bit dishonest; as if there are pros people bring up (which you can just mention you disagree with etc), but you do not feel like mentioning them. You can't expect me to just take your word for it and not hear the other side of the story. I'd rather like to decide on my own INCLUDING POTENTIAL PROS if I want to try it or not, instead of the one-sided way you made your video. But the things you mentioned otherwise were very helpful, so thank you for that.
I have couple friends at work I've been telling them NOT to ever use ice,....
You are doing a good thing, many people kill their orchids like this, if you look on the Just Add Ice orchids blog you'll see the comments lol
Yup...common sense really.
how about frozen fertilized water. lol =)
Now that would be something :))
