    ABOUT THIS VIDEO
It's my pleasure to show you the custom modifications I had installed on my ARP 2600 back in around 1979. In this video I'll discuss why I believed it was necessary to drill holes into the synthesizer for what I considered to be essential features and/or improvements to the design. I say essential because I was using the instrument to perform on live feature film recording sessions and live concert events. I needed to have preset octaves, preset intervals, longer release times, separate keyboard gates and more patching capability to be more effective in those mediums. Quick sound changes we required! Remember this was at a time when synthesizers did not have the ability to recall sounds via some sort of internal memory. I had to remember all the patches myself and use the modifications to immediately morph my sound changes in real time. I also had to get pretty good at creating patches without hearing the synth and hoping that I was close when I needed to start playing. Those were some golden years to be performing electronic instruments. It was easy to mess up but it definitely taught us some skills. I hope you enjoy seeing the mods in actions and hearing some of the accompanying stories!

I have a Korg ARP 2600, and you finally gave me a reason to take this 100-pound monster out of its case...this channel is amazing. You were the synth/music teacher I always needed.

What I love about Anthony's videos is that he assumes the audience has some basic knowledge of synthesizers, and these days, a lot of people do. These mods make a lot of sense, especially in the context of the time. It would be interesting if one of the companies that make virtual 2600s would come out with an "Anthony Marinelli Signature Edition" with his mods, and some of his sounds.

My older brother past away 2 years ago, and I've been learning piano ever since.
I bought a Roland Fantom keyboard which has a Jupiter 8, Juno 106, JX8-P, and SH101 expansion pack.
I was a kid in the 80s... when my brother would listen to Thriller, 70s/80s synth pop/rock...
Sometimes I dial in a sound on my keyboard that really transports me straight back to the 80s... and it's such a nostalgic experience.
It's such a pleasure to watch somebody with such a profound level of experience openly share his knowledge for synth sound design.
This is fast becoming my favourite channel.

Fantastic! Not only did I learn about some of the limitations of the ARP 2600 and how you were able to rise above them via practical mods, I also learned more about how the device works, in the first place. Bravo and may your electrical signal always be clean, Anthony.

One of the reasons why I always was a Moog guy and not an ARP lover, was the reason that there are no octave switches on the VCOs. You‘ve solved that issue beautifully!

Fantastic mods! I got the Behringer grey one a year ago or so, and love it. ( i have no other modular of any kind except software or internal mod matrix in menu diving eg inside the Alesis Micron) Anyway, it's got a 1X and 10X option for the evelopes and that's really useful, so it's interesting to see you have the 10X option here. But the preset oscilator octave switches, and two custom frequency pots per oscillator - that's just brilliant. Part of the whole charm of it I've found is tuning the oscillators and maybe having one a 5th above another then using the duophonic mode to have a separate playable pitch above. But changing the pitches around in a live setting would be the slowest part of the 2600 by far I think, so it makes sense you did that mod. It's pretty quick to get around otherwise. Anyway, cheers for the video :)

Smart mods! I have no prob doing mods to stuff, because I'll never sell them! I put a hard-sync and PWM control on my old MS20, and VCF control and external audio input on my SH101. I could care less about the resale value, those mods are amazing! Unfortunately, my 2600 is a re-pro (all SMD technology), so I don't think I can do any mods, or I probably would after watching this vid!! Love your channel!

But still a joy to play with . And why wouldn't you if you could! Great stuff, I should have never sold mine. It came from a radio and used to make weird noises for adds. The keyboard was almost unused but the synth was beaten up, did not sound as yours so I sold it 25 years ago, my envelopes were not snappy as are the Odyssey or SH 101, so was no good for techno ( or my unit I gues). With what I know now, it needed a full recap and refurbishing. Will buy another next year or so. I hope you get a lot of royalties my friend. I received a Distressor today, gonna try it! best from Spain.

Ace add-ons that make it definitely quicker to work with ! But I wonder why you haven't got a mod for sync on at least one of the VCOs (or did I miss something ;-) ? I own a Grey Meanie (actually has the same mod as yours for the AR) and a Tonus 2600 that both don't have it either, but on my TTSH (that actually sounds really good) I had sync done for all 3 VCOs and that's an incredible source for new sounds 🙂 Love to watch your videos 🙂

  • @baddriddimworkshop
    @baddriddimworkshop 3 години тому

I forgot i saw this before, a few good ideas for the ttsh... i got an opportunity to get an odyssey fs lately, i was thinking of trading it for something else at fisrt, but then, thinking the options out compared to the ttsh (2600), in fact i'm thinking about hacking the odyssey in the same way, getting thru those switches to catch mod and audio ins and outs, and make an external panel; a modded odyssey with mod/audio ins and outs, will be a great way to at add options to an Arp modular system, it'll add a bunch of functions to the system, an LFO, sync, options for having mores osc's and so program some polyphony with the proper controler or cv processor, highpass... that's gonna be some fun, now i need to find the time to do that... oh AND the odyssey FS has the 3 generations of odyssey filters... TBH, i dont understand why not done b4 because imo, it's a much better option that pilling up two 2600's, and addind options by "semimodularising" an odyssey with the way those switches are installed, is not that complicated of a task.

I have a question about the very first sound you hear on "Beat it". I have a Yamaha MODX keyboard which seemingly has all the classic DX7 patches. There's a sound called "Beaten Gong" which is Exactly that sound on the front of MJ's Beat it. It's a kind of drone...was that an original patch on the DX7? because it IS exactly that sound...and I wonder what original name of the patch was because "Beat it" made that sound super famous. Just curious if you know ;-)

For the life of me I can't understand why all three of the most prolific cloners of the 2600 (Behringer, Korg, and Antonus) didn't implement some of these ideas. The lack of octave switching on ARP gear was always a bit galling to me, and an envelope time multiplier seems like a no brainer to me.
I do like that some clones add hard sync and an additional LFO. But octave switching would be even more appreciated.
