- Alfie, from the 1966 Michael Caine classic, was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and was an Adacemy Award nominee for Best Song From A Motion Picture for 1966 (Born Free, the title track from the film of the same name, won). Bacharach wrote the tune with Warwick specifically in mind, but when the tune was pitched for the movie in London, Bacharach was overridden because the producers wanted a British singer to record the tune. Cilla Black recorded the tune and her version died at number 95 in the USA, although a hit in England. Ironically, Cilla's version was not used in the UK and European prints of the film; Sonny Rollins is heard in Australian prints of the film. When the film was released in the USA, United Artists felt a singer on their label should record the tune, so for the American prints of the film, Cher can be heard over the final credits, and her version peaked at 34 on the charts in 1966. Alfie was recorded by 42 other singers before Burt finally got his wish to record Alfie with Dionne and she took it all the way to # 5 on Billboard's Hot R&B Chart and #15 on Billboard's Hot 100. Dionne has stated Burt insisted that she record the tune since he had written it specifically for her to sing in the film, and she was reluctant after 42 other versions had been released and asked Burt, "How many more recordings of Alfie do you need?" Burt's reply? "Just one more, yours." She agreed to cut the tune because she needed one more track to complete the album according to Steve Tyrell. Originally released on the Here Where There Is Love LP in early 1967, the track was pulled from the album and played frequently by DJs all over the country. Dionne sang Alfie at the Academy Awards Ceremony in March to a world wide audience to much critical acclaim and the public began snap up her LP containing the tune. In March 1967 Scepter released the tune as the "B" side of The Beginning of Loneliness, a little known but beautiful Bacharach/David ballad. But, DJ's once again had the final word on the single and flipped it to make Alfie a huge hit, after Dionne's stunning performance of Alfie at the Academy Awards. The Here Where There Is Love LP hit the top twenty on the Billboard album chart and received an RIAA gold record award.
In 2008, Dionne Warwick's recording of Alfie was chosen for the Grammy Hall of Fame. Previous Warwick recordings honored by the Hall of Fame: Walk on By-1998, and Don't Make Me Over-20.
This is one of the all-time best lyrics ever written on any popular song, and the addition of the great Dionne Warwick's voice makes it a classy & classic masterpiece...!!!
So true.
Good not agree more, these times were the best❤
@@pattigee1 wish in the '60's again!
Burt Bacharach was phenomenal. But even so, the two best things to happen to his career were crossing paths with Hal David.
And Dionne Warwick.
I completely agree!!
This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard and Dionne Warwick's version is sublime.
hello glynis
The very best !
Yes it is. On both counts.
I adored this woman growing up in the 60s! There's no other voice out there like Dionne Warwick💞
hello nancy
Nina Simone & Dionne…voices from another world
Yes, I too grew up in the ‘60’s. Graduated HS in ‘65. What an amazing era of music we shared & LOVED!❤🎉
They say men aren't suppose to cry, this song has always touched the inner self of me!!! I miss my little girl so much, please pray for me, thanks!
Black Onyx you're a real piece aren't you? May you not experience the loss of someone you love
Angie Baker Fuck you ole bitch 😒
Black Onyx you are so sick, you will reap what you sir or whatever. Don’t push!!!
Condolences Sir. You may never see this post. Some know the tremendous pain of such love lost. "The prayers of a righteous man availeth much with God." May God assuage your pain and anguish over time, leaving only the beautiful moments from her presence. Amen
I dont know ehats going on here but im sorry for your loss..this touches me too.." Withou true love we just exist" 😞 Stay strong and God bless you
The best version, she is the greatest singer of our time, wonderful
Barbara Streisand!!!???
@@jonathandoelander6130 laura fabian???
Cilla Black, the first version, filled with power.
Lol. Personally I wouldn't go that far. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder, this also applies to the beauty of one's singing voice. Personally, I would say the greatest female singer of our time is Etta James unequivocally with the likes of Whitney Houston. Patsy Kline, Aretha Franklin, or Adele a close 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. Some, for biased subjective reasons would erroneously pick Streisand or Karen Carpenter when Streisand can't realistically hold a candle to Gladys Knight's version of "The Way We Were" and Carpenter didn't have much range at all, a nice voice that sang at the same pitch but hardly any range for hitting high notes at all. Lol 😄. So it's very subjective to assert Warwick as thee greatest of all time. I couldn't realistically put her pure singing voice in my top 25 best of all time. She too has very limited range and even often sings "acceptably" off key much of the time in failed efforts to reach higher notes but doesn't sound too bad so we accept it because the wonderful songs Bacharach chose her to sing of his are just that appealing in and of themselves. Just my opinion and perspective.
But Warwick did a nice job with this beautiful moody song. Charming indeed.
No question about it. The definitive version. Magical, haunting, subtle, delicate, sensitive, urgent. So many colors in one piece, and so much innate musicality and vocal suppleness in the interpretation. This is a masterpiece and one of the finest popular music recordings of all time, imho. A shimmering orchestra, Dionne in exquisite voice. Dionne helped turn this beautifully crafted song into a timeless standard. Thanks, DW, for the music. You are a treasure.
Very well said! Blessings.
Exquisitely said...
Steve, so true
Great version by a superior singer. Cilla Black struggles through the changes in comparison, I think it she was out of her depth with Bacharach, better singing Beatles' castoff songs. Warwick is a trained singer who 'gets it'. Black was just along for the ride.
Sir. Your comment here is a treasure!
No matter how many singers sing this song it sounds like it was written Just 4 Her..............
It was. Bacharach and David wrote most of their songs specifically for her.
They were a great team. I had an office next to them in 1650 Broadway. those were great times.
I agree 100%...
Robert Loye you lucky dog!
Cilla Black...
Warwick sings the very best rendition of this beautiful song. 😊
William Ollis , it's hers. She owns it. There are so many that only she's known for that no one else can do it like she doès
She does. Such a beautiful song
Nope Cilla Black is the stand out version of this brilliant song.
@@m5rbe Disagree. Dionne hands down. But to each his own

A perfect song that doesn't age.
Dionne's tones and color and interpretation are why she was theirs (Burt & Hal) and everyone's favorite pop singer!
Your observation is astute, the timbre of her voice and her phrasing -- as you put it, "Dionne's tones and color and interpretation are why she was Burt & Hal's (and everyone else's) favorite pop singer! Thanks for posting, Camille Lourde Wyatt
Camille Lourde Wyatt Simply the best
She is an amazing singer
Beautiful singer she is so amazing
This is the best track ever, no matter how many people will sing this song.
I remember this playing on the radio in 1966, I loved it then and now. Still listening in 2019.
I can't imagine anyone else singing this beautiful song.
Neither can I.
Delfonics do a great version.
WILLIAM FORE Cilla Black did it for Bacharach, in England. Another hit for her. I think Dionne, was the
Most interpretative, of the song.
Cilla Black's rendition is a pretty good comparison.
Cilla blacks version was the best imo,
When you walk let you heart lead the way and you'll find love any day, Alfie.
The best version ever!
Dionne Warwick gave me so much joy from her music. I love her
" Bacharach wrote the tune (Afie) with Warwick specifically in mind,"
Hal David said he wrote all his songs with Dionne in mind, no matter who end up singing them.
Dionne is the best singer to set her foot on this planet.
@@brandonoliver6226 AMEN!

I dont know about you guys, but everytime i hear this song...

yes!you say is right……Because you too emotinal。
Me too!
Same.
Brings back so many wonderful memories..just hearing this song💓
What's it all about, Alfie?
Is it just for the moment we live?
What's it all about when you sort it out, Alfie?
Are we meant to take more than we give
or are we meant to be kind?
And if only fools are kind, Alfie,
then I guess it's wise to be cruel.
And if life belongs only to the strong, Alfie,
what will you lend on an old golden rule?
As sure as I believe there's a heaven above, Alfie,
I know there's something much more,
something even non-believers can believe in.
I believe in love, Alfie.
Without true love we just exist, Alfie.
Until you find the love you've missed you're nothing, Alfie.
When you walk let your heart lead the way
and you'll find love any day, Alfie, Alfie
marco minelli lovely lyrics.
marco minelli
Thank you. Such beautiful lyrics!
Thrill for me to hear this again after so long. Her musical understanding is enormous, and vocally she does everything right. Tons of nuance. Uses her voice correctly. Love her. I wish anyone today could do anything musically correct! Oh well, we'll always have Paris.
Compare this incredible musical talent to the garbage foisted upon society, today. Bring back melody, harmony, beauty. Dionne, you are truly a beautiful talent, musician, human being.
Amen
No comparison! 💥
Interesting ... observe the message within the lyrics to this song, when considering what mankind, today, accepts 🤔...
also interesting... the way those of mankind who sometimes act as artists; referred to as musicians, or actor/acress, with melanated skin were, and are still today, treated.
also interesting that we, as mankind, accept being treated in ways that lead to the current conditions of the planet altogether 🤔
"...Without true love we just exist, Alfie
Until you find the love you've missed..."
may we each and all discover the law for mankind... ✌️🫶💪 let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me
The questions these lryics ask seem even more pertinent in current times than long ago. A beautuful, thought provoking song... 💚
I know!
Another Warwick classic! the way she phrases some songs is spellbinding. In my personal opinion would definitely be in the top 10 on any pop list.
Alfie is my personal favorite of hers. And you are quite right about Dionnes phrasing. She takes you to a place beyond the deep lyrics and rich music. It's so beautifully sung, it's quite humbling to hear her sing it. It leaves my exposed.
I love her
The songs performed by the magnificent Dionne Warwick in her beautiful voice are always nostalgic and tasteful. It portrays a time when people had more romantic sensibilities and enjoyed good music. Good times !!!
Absofuckinluteley
Silkiest voice ever. She was the very best. Miss her voice.
RIP Hal David. 1 September 2012.
Still the gold standard…Bacharach-David-Warwick!
This is and forever will be Dionne's song and the best. Goodnight.
wow, the lyrics + music + singer = perfect
I just sit and weep when she sings...………...so beautiful! she is without peer...………..
Dionne's vocals was pure perfection for Valley of The Dolls.
Amazing... epic.
Totally agree.
Perfection and haunting
Perfection!
👍👏
Dionne Warwick had us all agog in the 60’2s and 70’s... Still love her!
I loved and cared for my sheep dog "Alfie" bone in April of 1974 and we were best of friends for 14 years, and this was our song. The lyrics say it all. Thank you for such fond memories. I love and miss you Alfie
SWEET❣
My Alfie was a shepherd/collie mix . This song always reminds me of my friend my first dog.
@@ajlawson132 It's funny you should mention that - when Cilla Black was first offered the song, she declined because she said it sounded like the name for a dog.
I never imagined the subject of this song to be a friggin dog. A dog that thinks it's wise to be cruel and that life belongs only to the strong. So your dog Alfie was a sort of deep thinking narcissist sociopathic sort huh? 🤣🤣🤣
@@darrenduncan1674 Why is there always a "you" in these comments. He misses his dog and his dog was called "Alfie". Find bigger things to get emotional about.
Very best of Dionne, Bert and Hal, always led by their hearts any day.
To Dionne W. You have always been my favorite female singer.... You are, hands down, the best this planet will ever have............. perfection...
GREAT VOICE AND BEAUTIFUL SONG ALL IN ONE, THANK YOU.
After reading so much on all the 'versions' of this song, I admit - I still have not heard another version, other than Dionne's. It's a heavy song, very deep meaning and I still haven't seen the movie it was connected to. Can't imagine anyone singing this song - any better...
Cilla sang it just as good and both have legendary voices
The movie is great. It would be great for people today to revisit it.
@@kerrytopel9835. Cilla’s version is not better or worse, just different. Dionne had a much stronger voice and could sing this well within maximum. Cilla was stretching her voice and throat and emotions to 100%, and that vulnerability fits the song. You feel she could break into pieces.
They don't make anything close to this anymore.
You are so right. So much of today's music lacks soul. No heart and soul or emotion. Another beautiful song that comes to mind like "Alfie" is Roberta Flack's "First time ever I saw your face". I have always loved the classic Dionne songs. Roberta had a beautiful voice like Dionne. I don't think either gets the recognition they deserve.
Dee Marie Wright amen.
👍
Used to watch solid gold because of Dionne Warwick. Her time on the show was short, but she certainly made it worthwhile
Look at who runs the “music” industry. THERE is the reason why.
During our current state of chaos and darkness (and who doesn't think that this time in history is not one big mess?) it is too easy to lose our basic belief in the inevitable triumph of good over evil -- to genuinely feel that there is hope for a better world. We have lost that sense for sure. The lack of meaningful music being written today is one symptom of our desperate time. For anyone who has the good fortune to turn back to the genuine "Golden Oldies" (e.g. any of Bacharach/David compositions) there is at least a calming reassurance that we can choose to dignify our own inner lives with things that matter -- to live our own lives meaningfully despite the dangers without.
More than 30 old and it sound as good as it did then. I love this lady
Thank you so much Ms Warwick for making life worth living!!!
aaahhh a time when vocalists could hold and sustain a note no trills no faking it
Mariah is the queen of fake notes
No Autotune in those days!
The late, great year of '67 wasn't without issues but we reflect upon how fast it flew by and try to remember the good times
that year.
Except for the music, the Sixties would have ended me.
Dionne Warwick's voice, Hal Davis lyrics, and Burt's arrangements and composing is a perfect combination. Dionne is one of the few singers that could pull of singing their songs. There may be some others but IMO nobody did it better than Ms Warwick.
Deep down, don't we all want to know what life (Being and Creation) is all about, especially during confusing and challenging times? Don't we all strive to make the invisible, visible; the unknown, known; create order out of chaos, and make sense out of nonsense? Hal David captures the essence of this question in as few words as possible. Burt Bacharach honors its spiritual significance with beautiful sound, perfect timing, and exquisite emphasis. And Dionne Warwick, with her amazing voice and presence, delivers the most sensitive and meaningful interpretation of this quest for understanding to our biological and spiritual senses. No wonder we continue to remember its haunting importance to the future of our children, ourselves and the world.
You are simply put, spot on my friend.
Yes! God Bless Trump! Good rules over evil!!
How perfectly said. Yes, don't we all wonder? I keep coming back to these haunting lyrics, first heard in my 20s. The answers to my questions about how we should live our lives are still unclear. I had hoped, as a now older lady, I would have found some answers, some peace. Seems life is more about money currently than back when I was young.... what bothers me most, is that people don't seem to question right & wrong much these days. And so I just wish I didn't think so much. I believe I would be more content with acceptance.
Roger Peterson I hope your words don't come back to haunt you .
I love to sing and I sing this song all of the time-exactly as you said, we all want to know what life is about. this beautiful song makes me cry intensely when i hear it. my sister passed away 1 month ago and she loved this song and actually introduced me to all of the beautiful music she listened to back in the 1960''s. I was 8 in 1967 when this song came out. Anyways, Roger, I really liked what you wrote.
Dionne Warwick can sing anything!!!!!!!!!!!
Beautiful voice and beautiful song i was only 15 and love the song as a teenager
Dionne Warwick took on some really tough-to-sing songs from Bacharach and David, and this is one of them. You can just love her performance for the sense of time and phrasing alone, and there's more besides.
Absoutely the best, most meaningful lyrics of any song ever IMO by Hal David. The Gorgeous
melody by Burt and The Voice of Dionne Warwick. It doesn't get better than this song.
a classic , only by Dionne
That voice!
Arguably Bacharach and David's best.
This tune is so good it's mystical, and her vocal interpretation just right.
When dionne sings it's like she's telling a story, you can feel the pain, joy, frustrations , happiness she's the only singer that when she sing live song is better than recording. I have most of her songs downloaded on my mp3 and played over and over again . They should put her songs in a time capsule so that the next generation can still discover and hear her voice.
Ms Warwick at her finest.
I saw Dionne sing this half a dozen years ago in Keene, NH. It truly was one of the biggest thrills of my life!
Both the song and movie are excellent. Ms. Warwick had a way of making any soundtrack superlative. Ms. Warwick is one of the greats and a stunner at that. Thanks for this great body of work with Mr. Bachrach.
Bravo!
Pure Dionne, Thank You and Thank You For All!
memorable musical score, beautiful lyrics, warwick at her youthful best. Hooray !
Bacharach, & David, a magical combination.
This is one of the best Female Voices that has always stayed with me me BEAUTIFUL
I always cry when performing this song. I hope I don't cry during my audition for the Voice cause this will be my audition song.
Taylor_Harris Taylor good luck or break a leg
Taylor Harris I hope it worked out for you when I was a child my mom would sing this song to me as we danced she has recently been diagnosed with senility so this song will always hold a special place in my heart
What a song. Those three-Warwick, Bacharach, and David outdid themselves with this one. More stunning now than when it came out...and I loved it then, too.
Jon Goforth
It was stunning way back then. Dionne's interpretation of Alfie is timeless! She had the ability to touch the listner in a safe, soothing kind, gentle way.
Powerful soul searching lyrics ! Makes me search my soul and her voice penetrates deep to the core. Only the line 'are we meant to take more than we give would be better stated " is it better to get than to give.
Dionnne gives me the illusion of eternal youth. How could you not lover her voice.
For those of you who don't know - it was a different world back then...more loving, gentler, kinder, friendlier. It just felt good. Every day was an adventure. The world seems so evil, now.
We will transcend the darkness. 🙏
I have adored this song since I was 16.....it's so beautiful
This was the first song I remember my mom liking/relating to/and playing more than once on record. I was younger than 5 years old. My mother used to sing along to this song. She passed last Sunday. I play this song now to remember her. I know she's in a better place I hope I will be too.
I think even if you have never known love and lost or have never suffered the loss of loved ones, this song will still break your heart.
Simply Beautiful!
I'm now in my last days of life and listening to these songs brings me beautiful memories of the 60s. I can't stop thinking and crying.

Dionne Warwick should have recorded the movie soundtrack Her voice is so much more sweeter than Cilla
So, so true.
Very true comment.
Cilla's voice is raw and real. They picked the right version.
Dionne is a world class singer, she's fantastic, but Cilla sang the song with raw emotion .
They chose cilla because she was the best fit and she did it amazingly
A gorgeous sweet melodious song perfectly sung by Miss Dionne.

one of the most beautiful songs ever written. And Ms. Warwick is flawless on it.
A song that has the very essence of the 1960ties in it....Alfie
The History of the song is brilliant, thanks for the info... I love Dionne Warwick's voice, I think it is a terrific song, The film was iconic too. I have loved every version I've ever heard! Burt was lucky to have such beauties singing for him! xx

Sheer perfection here, the definitive DW-BB-HD song, and it raises a question that unfortunately we can never answer. It's from a very good film that will always be relevant.
So many years later it still remains magical
Love this version. Especially the way she can hit every not with total ease - no one else can do that, not even Cilla.

Real Music, Real Instruments....not like today's garbage made from computers.
"Alfie" is a great song from the late 60's.
Such a clear, feminine voice, delivered with emotion. Wow.
I thought a was the only one finding my self in tears...now I know some other people do too, but can’t stop listening to this great outstanding classic song ...is just awesome !!!
I will never get enough of this Dionne Original of Alfie. Perfect.
"Without true love we just exist"
To me this song is one of the most meaningful, beautiful ever written. Hal David really got it right here, Bacharach provided a gorgeous melody and the singing of Dionne Warwick interpreted those lyrics perfectly making this an iconic recording providing enormous emotional pull. Tears are prevalent each time I play or hear it. This triumvirate created something that all people should listen to and try to emulate. What it's all about are these lyrics, melody and the best cover. This has my vote for best song ever.
wow i did not know that either cool dionne is the best :) her voice is smooth and relaxing
It's 2020 and this song is still PERFECT!!!!
Timeless. Elegant. Silky. Angelic. Dionne Warwick.
