  • What a combination of talent!! Medley from the tribute to Duke Ellington 1973

    The best. Each artist so different and yet so powerful together. Aretha, showing the world what it is to be Aretha Franklin, a whole new stratosphere to be discovered. Roberta Flack bringing us back to earth with her raw (under-appreciated) talent. Sarah Vaughan, already divine, showing these children how easy it is when you have been given Grace. Sarah's voice is clearly distinguishable throughout in its purity and strength, but notice how she wisely lets the other ladies take the culminate chorus on their own, and dips her head to bow out to their voices. Class. She didn't need to steal the show. Peggy drops in to show everyone that the definition of cool need not be obtained by reaching for the rafters. Greatness abounds and this is a historic capture of these legends!

    The way Sarah Vaughan worked that line, "My poor heart is sentimental". That stole the show for me, and that's what Sarah does best. Plus I've never actually seen Aretha give props to another female singer the way she did for Sarah then. I think she knew she was in good company. What a beautiful blend, all the ladies smashed, while showcasing their talents.

  • @luminiferous1960
    @luminiferous1960 5 років тому +40

    What is fascinating to me about this performance is how well these four divas sing together without "stepping on" each others vocal lines. They each solo, and during each solo, the others harmonize and support the soloist, and then they harmonize well during the group choruses.
    Such skill, grace, and class are rare. Throughout the performance they seem to be enjoying themselves as well.
    The video and sound quality are not great - probably VHS taped from a broadcast - but the performance is not only historically unique and important, but also artistically satisfying. I'm surprised that this performance has not gotten more publicity over the years.

    Aretha and holler don't belong in the.same sentence. Aretha song jazz before she had a string of hits in r&b and soul. She gave this performance color and brought the best out of the others with her youthful sound and energy. And technically if it isn't opera or classical music then ALL could be considered hollering. Aretha is timeless, international, national treasure, the most versatile, and 18x grammy winner in multiple genres. Respest the Queen.

    • @wedidntknow
      @wedidntknow 10 років тому +4

      I did not say Aretha sounded bad. i was referring to musical style. She was more gospel...She did holler, it was great hollering but she hollered. I respect Aretha very much. FYI Opera is hollering too. It is a controlled hollering. learning to use, what many teachers and pedagogs call, the shout voice to amply sound. That along with acoustics is how one is heard over an orchestra.

    • @melaninenriched7844
      @melaninenriched7844 8 років тому +7

      +wedidntknow You should know that hollering isn't a singing technique which can and will damage the vocal cords. What she did was belt which is a singing technique. Just as the other person said, she started out in jazz and did well. However, even during those times you could tell there was more to her voice which there was. She has a powerful voice which can overshadow others if not control but in this case she blended well with the group.

    I find it hilarious that Sarah Vaughan missed her note around 6:16 especially her along with Peggy Lee and Roberta Flack was giving Aretha a hard time because she didn't read music. This is according to Quincy Jones autobiography. Still Sarah was amazing but Aretha really knocked it out of the park. They all did great but even Quincy said Aretha kicked ass.

      Aretha was truly born with a special set of 'pipes'. I do agree w/you - of the 4 women, her voice really has a power which commands attention. It has an attitude. Definitely!

      islezeus "They ragged on Aretha and complained that she couldn't read music and wouldn't wear a black dress like they did. Aretha responded in self-defense by kicking ass and taking names vocally when the four of them did an Ellington medley arranged by Mitzi and Kenny Welch. She definitely smoked it." - Quincy Jones from Q: The Autobiography of Quincy Jones

      Love the whole performance, but Roberta takes me up in the rafters at that point! Amazing and underrated performer when she was in her prime! This is one of my favourite performances by Aretha too. I love her voice, but as she gained fame, she seems to have developed the notion that every note needs a trill, which I think detracts from how amazing her voice actually is...

    Well , I think in Peggy's case ...she had a 61 year singing career , and 55 year recording career . She wrote hundreds of songs ...which are known across the globe , and had dozens of hits . Her voice is known instantly . She had the likes of Ella , Sinatra , Judy Garland , Tony Bennett and Ray Charles attending her concerts .She is still played and highly respected today . I think these are just some of the things that make Peggy Lee a legend .

    This is talent. No auto tune. There aren't 20 dancers on the stage, 4 skimpy costume changes, lasers or pyro. It's just four phenomenal women on stage singing an amazingly written song. It's shocking. They have on all of their clothes, yet they can sing. Thank you to the person who posted this!

    @bobbiemars "My god! What a line up! Amazing. And so respectful of each other - no upstaging or diva nonsense form any of them - true musicians...." Yep...it's called total R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Because remember, it wasn't THEIR show and it wasn't about THEM. They were there to pay homage, rememberance, reverance and respect to the MASTER SHOWMAN who was there, in the trenches, paving a long, hard road for them LONG before any of them cut their first record. Imagine if Aguillera were up there...

    Sarah est vraiment au dessus, avec une voix d'une agilité et d'une justesse incomparables. Seules Billie et Ella peuvent rivaliser en émotion (pour Billie) et aisance (pour Ella). mais cette vidéo est magnifique et nous permet d'apprécier 4 immenses interprètes !

    Peggy is the oldest and her voice had begun to fade a decade earlier. Her style was also entirely different, with a softer and more subdued delivery as her trademark. The polar opposite of Aretha. In numbers like Fever and Why Don't You do Right and of course Is That All There Is? There was a sultry sophistication in every song she sang. It was pop with as light a jazz or blues sound , and still have a hint of that flavor. She has done some fine duets with Garland, Dinah Shore, Sinatra etc.

    I have music from them all. Sarah Vaughan got my attention in 1959 with Broken Hearted Melody when I was 15 years old and when I started to explore her music it lead me into jazz. Roberto Flack I saw in concert many years ago with my last wife. At her service I requested that they play "The First Time That I Saw Your Face ", one of my favourite love songs. Have been a fan from when she released "Fever" such a sexy voice. Aretha Franklin was and is one of my favourite singers of all time. What an experience and joy to the ear to hear those 4 voices together. So very glad that I discovered this.
