Deadly illegal trap and wildlife rescuer bitten!

  • Wildlife Aid had been alerted to a couple of cases of foxes stuck in gin traps (illegal in the UK since 1958), resulting in the death of two animals in Guildford, Surrey.
    In this video, Simon, Sean and Lucy were called to rescue the first victim, a fox with the trap clamped on his front leg. Even though he was injured and limping badly, the fox was very feisty and severely bit Sean's hand!
    Sadly, it is just not possible to amputate a front leg of a wild fox. The fox would die a long slow death in the wild without a front leg (no ability to pounce on prey, dig, climb etc). We can and would amputate a hind leg if we had to, but never a front leg.
    £1000 reward for information leading to the successful conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for setting the illegal gin traps: www.wildlifeaid...
    If you ever see one of these traps, please call the police or your local Wildlife Centre.
    If you would like to help us fight the use of these horrific animal traps, please donate via our website: bit.ly/WAFdonate

      That particular type of trap holds the animal by the ankle until the trapper comes to release or dispatch the animal. These traps have a chain attached to them that trappers pin down with a stake, to prevent the the animal from running off with a trap. The person who set the trap in this video either has never used a trap before or set the trap properly but the chain came loose due to wet soil.

      No, not true. I picked up everything shiny when I was little, I work with kids, they regularly come over to me with wounds, because they found shards of glass and hoped it was a diamond.
      The same would happen with this. Kids dive into the bushes, grab the 'shiny item' and quite possibly snap their fingers off.

    • @mikeleikam2892
      @mikeleikam2892 6 років тому +3

      Widdekuu91 no it wouldn't snap their fingers off! I've caught my own fingers in my traps and they don't amputate! If they did , how would they hold the animal? This is pure anti trapping propaganda. In the US you take or set off a trap or remove a animal you are breaking the law. It's illegal tomess with someone else's trap and catch. What's a little kid doing out in the woods or pasture by themselves anyway?

    There are many legal methods for trapping fox's in the UK, the use of a gin is totally unnecessary. This appears to be an urban area where ignorance of the rules and laws is clearly rife. This would never happen on a well managed farm or estate.

    Firstly: make sure your chickens are locked up safe when it's roosting time.
    secondly: foxes naturally scavenge but they also hunt & eat rats & if given a chance they will keep down the rat population.
    thirdly: if the problem continues call your local wildlife centre, they may have a solution, we need to live with nature not fight it. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

      Zander Jamieson It is just not possible to amputate the leg of a wild fox. It would never be able to run, jump, pounce, hunt, mate or anything else essential for a wild life. He would die a slow, painful death from starvation, and that is not something we feel is fair. As for a 3D printed leg, that is not something that would survive a wild life. It would quickly be worn away, and unlike a domestic pet you can't just keep an eye on a wild animal and keep bringing it in to a vet for checks. Even if it were possible, we sadly lack both the techniques and the funds necessary to think about such a procedure. We do everything we can to save an animal, and every death hurts just as much as the first.

One day my mother was standing in the kitchen and 'Puss' came jumping through the window starving. Mt mother immediately gave him food and water. He purred and purred and purred, and then she took a good look at him and his foot plus four inches of his right foreleg was missing completely. He was rushed to the vet. The vet said he must have had to wait until it rotted off, and he had gangrene right up into his shoulder. He had to be put to sleep. It broke our hearts and we never had another cat again. The vet said it would have been a gin-trap used by farmers for foxes.

    I love the ones with foxes. Always sad when they die of course, but I like seeing that they fight until the last moment, and how clever they are, even if sometimes too much so for their own good. Foxes are cool, plain and simple.

    I just did some research and found to my horror that these traps are legal in 42 states in the USA. I need to double check but I'm pretty sure they're legal in mine. It looks like those of us from the US have a campaign to start on. :(

      Kaycee Briguera In the US the laws are on the side of farmers and ranchers who don't want their livestock killed by wild animals. I grew up on a small farm in rural NW Florida, raising free-range chickens, goats, and rabbits. We did have a major problem with coyotes (invasive species in FL) killing our goats, possums and raccoons killing chickens, and so forth. The most devastating predator was actually a pack of dogs that someone had decided to stop feeding--they killed 22 of our 23 goats in one night and only tried to eat one. So I understand the frustration that leads to people setting traps. My family tried it on a small scale and it didn't do a bit of good. We still lost goats and chickens. The problem with traps is that they are indiscriminate and cruel. You could put traps everywhere and still have your animals killed because the predator didn't happen to step in one. Meanwhile, you could be torturing animals to death who had no predatory intentions at all. Possibly your own livestock or pets! And even if they were possible predators, that doesn't mean they should be horribly mutilated or tortured to death just for existing in their own habitat. I can't advocate traps as a solution and I would like to see these outlawed.

      Christie B good luck. We trapper and hunters have organizations that fight for our rights to hunt and trap. Besides we are the ones paying for wildlife conservation and management through the Pittman Robertson Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration act of 1934.

    • @mikeleikam2892
      @mikeleikam2892 6 років тому

      Christie B traps are very specie's specific if you know what you are doing. Proper size trap for the target species helps too. Every year I catch dogs that are miles from houses and are trespassing anyway. Your dog gets caught because it's running loose, don't blame the legal trapper. I've turned dogs loose with no harm done. Coyotes are a problem to livestock owners and most around here have mange. Mange is a terrible death for any animal.

      Right. So my family owns chickens and ducks and every once in a while a fox or raccoon will come in and kill a few before we can kill or trap it. Most people don't want foxes or raccoons around because they kill pets and livestock. But you don't know or care about this because you are stuck in the city bubble. To much compassion and not enough common sense

    These are called leg hold traps. They can be bought new on ebay for about 40 quid. In most countries including the US they are totally legal to use. Its predecessor (still used in many places) was the gin trap. This had sharpened teeth and seared into flesh and bone. Many animals chewed off their own legs to get out of them. Well done guys for putting this poor fox out of its misery and I think it would be a good idea to wear rigger gauntlets when handling distressed animals

    Dear people who have level headed train of thought.
    This does not happen when trapping laws are followed. I assure you people who do follow the laws care more about the animals than any poacher ever would. So please do not get mad at trappers but poachers blatantly ignoring the laws set in place to help regulate wildlife
