*Ridge Should Be the Judge of Who is Mrs. Ridge Forrester*
Why are Taylor and Brooke fighting in court rather than asking Ridge to choose between them? The battle for Ridge has become a legal drama when it should be a romantic drama. Yesterday the judge himself seemed to realize that when he asked Ridge what he wanted but the lawyers - the legal avatars of Taylor and Brooke - interrupted and prevented Ridge from answering. It’s as if Taylor and Brooke want to keep the decision out of Ridge’s hands and stay in this competitive courtroom realm where they can battle each other more directly. Only Ridge can ultimately decide who gets to be Mrs. Ridge Forrester but it’s interesting that neither woman seems to want to let him decide. It shows that neither Taylor nor Brooke is really confident in their romantic position with Ridge. Taylor is no longer “the wife” so she’s lost the confidence she used to have in that role and Brooke has not yet become “the good girl” so she hasn’t gained the confidence of that archetype.
I was thinking - maybe the point here is that since _neither_ Brooke nor Taylor can claim the "moral high ground", the show wants to prevent _either_ of them from a decisive win. This way, _both_ women actually lose Ridge as a husband. Brooke because her marriage isn't valid - Taylor because Ridge will choose to stay with Brooke.
But if that's the case, then y hasn't Ridge made a decision. Didn't Taylor tell him whn he went overseas to think bout wat he wants, wat was his ans "Its a mess"🥴.
If it's Ridge's decision, then who is stopping him from makin a decision. He culd hav ended this long time back !!
Great post! It's like you and Annie have been saying, both women are acting insecure and not living up to the romantic heroine role.
Just seeing Ridge and Brooke sitting next to each other and Taylor on the other side speaks volumes.
@@annieo6527 Yes I think that's a good read Annie. But as you and others have noted: why is the judge and the hearing so focused on feelings instead of the legal merits? And I think the answer is that the hearing is just a competitive space for Taylor and Brooke to each state their case and fight over Ridge while keeping the decision out of his hands.

@@annieo6527you know I'm susceptible to that point. I don't think she has unclean hands. Taylor didn't gain anything back then, only pain. She helped someone else, Ridge, to be happy as her first concern. And I have to say either Brooke has unclean hands in that storyline if we don't count the fact she knew Taylor was alive, but that omission was pointless in the storyline. Omar has them for sure but, as the no reaction listening about the "functional" Bridge family, nobody is horrified about his behaviour.

Exactly! Forgive me this rant but this part of the storyline bugs me to no end. I don't understand why the show isn't treating Omar as more of a villain and why Taylor doesn't just say clearly, "I wasn't allowed to leave the palace! I had no free will!" It's insane that Omar gets to just waltz into court and act as an injured party when he held Taylor captive. She had to sneak out of the palace in an elaborate scheme just to see her dying father! There's more than enough there to meet the duress standard for that marriage contract to be instantly voided (not to mention for Omar to be charged and barred from ever entering the US). The fact that she was aware of Ridge and agreed to marry Omar is irrelevant because she wasn't _actually free._ Once again this show's concept of consent is 🥴😬

Macy's line "well, I'm just utterly horrified" is just brilliant.
Sometimes when a line is spoken, it is meant literally and the subtext matches the words. Other times, the tone of voice gives away a subtext that _contradicts_ the words - in which case, the true meaning is in the way the line is said, not the words spoken. But in this case, there's a third twist. Macy's words convey that she is "horrified", her tone of voice implies that she is in fact turn ed on and that the words are spoken ironically (which is the message she is trying to send to Anthony), but the viewers know that she *is* in fact just as horrified as she says she is. She is ly ing in her _tone of voice,_ while her _words_ are the _literal truth_ - quite the opposite of how subtext usually works.
Macy's face while she says that line is equally layered - she is almost in tears but struggling to conceal a victorious smile. That one moment captures several layers of emotion - disgust, fear, relief, fake attraction, subdued triumph. In fact, both the real Macy and the persona she created for Anthony are _visible at once._

In California *bigamy* is a criminal offense under Penal Code 281 PC. Unlike Ridge who believed to be a widower, Taylor got married when she knew she was already married to someone.
But I assume Taylor's plea has made an impression and tomorrow the judge will just declare the second marriage to be invalid.

Now I've watched 2079 episodes, watching several episodes every day. Bold and the Beautiful - 1995 (S8 E328) FULL EPISODE 2079 These episodes are from 1995. Why do I have to wait for a new episode every day here on UA-cam? Since they are from 1995, I will never finish the entire series as long as I live with only one episode per day.
I agree. I would advise to skip around a little bit while you wait for the next episodes. That’s what I did. I have sooo many to finish watching. But for a year I watched 2019 and 2020 episodes. Then I skipped around and went to 2010 to 2012 episodes for a few months. Then skipped to some of the very first episodes in the late 1980s. Then went to early to late 90s episodes. Then back to 2011 to 2012 ones. Lol! 😅I know it’s confusing to do that but if you try to remember what goes on, you can still get a good bit watched.
I agree the 1995 episodes I haven’t seen in years but the other ones I have recently watched over and over. I wish they would bring back 3 episodes of the old one every day.

*Faust and Little Red Riding Hood*
In this episode, the stakes that have been implicit throughout the Anthony/Macy storyline are being made explicit - the setup is that Macy can _only_ save Thorne if she agrees to sleep with Anthony. It's a very archetypal "deal with the devil" scenario where she has to sell herself in order to pay for Thorne's freedom (again, this previously implicit undercurrent is made explicit in this episode by Darla outright stating "I think the guy's the devil himself", followed by Macy accepting Anthony's offer by literally saying "Deal!"). This way, it appears as if the show is creating a Faust/Mephistopheles dynamic with Macy and Anthony, where she is willing to sell her soul in order to get what she wants from the 😈. (And prior to this, there was a similar dynamic between Ivana and Anthony, where she invited him into her soul and he ended up using her and then unaliving her.)
But the twist is that Macy doesn't actually agree to these terms, and she has no intention of following through on her end of the bargain. She is _not_ willing to sell her soul (i.e. sleep with Anthony) because she has _already_ exchanged vows with Thorne and pledged "all of herself" to him. Instead, she tries to _tr i ck_ the Big Bad. And this is where the story becomes less like the archetypal Faust story and more like the "outwitting the monster" fairy tale trope that I mentioned in episode 2072. In fact, in early versions of the folk tale Little Red Riding Hood, the girl escapes and avoids getting into bed with the Big Bad Wolf _exactly_ the same way Macy does - by feigning an urgent "call of nature". (Of course, the Little Red Riding Hood trope has been a recurring theme in Anthony's storyline from the start.)
Great point about the transition from Faust to Fairytale! The tension and stakes in this scene were at a breakneck point and it really felt like the dynamics you've been describing all came to a head in this scene. And when Macy fully makes the switch between storytelling modes, she slips up for the first time (dropping the tape). It's as if there's a cost to making the Faustian bargain but there's also a cost to _not_ making it as well.
@@NewYorkNick0607 yes, and Macy slips up _the exact same way_ that Anthony slipped up when Macy overheard his confession - by being overly confident and giving herself a moment of triumph that she actually couldn't afford (she shouldn't have stayed in the room to listen to the tape).
Another nice touch is the return of the low batteries (which is what stopped her tape from reaching Thorne back in 1993). Macy simply doesn't have the literal "power" to take control of the plot.
Agree that, in some way, although Macy does have a way out of the Faustian bargain, the plot still "punishes" her for trying to evade it.
Are there such cases in soaps, that the woman has actually gone through something like that? I don't mean with a knife or gun held over her, but cases where the man is still dangerous but he thinks the woman pretending is not afraid of him, in love with him etc? Does anyone know?
@@marn25 I'm not sure about examples of the woman going through with it, but when the roles were reversed, _James_ went through with it in the "parallel storyline" with Sheila.

I know. I watched it twice to confirm. I don't think it's a writing flaw. It was Omar manipulating again. Just as he did regarding consummating their vows.
This proves how he tricked Taylor into marrying him. The torture, the imprisonment, the gaslighting, the manipulation, in the end it worked. Then whn she finally gave in, it seemed like her fault for saying yes !!

That court hearing and especially the part about the marriage between Taylor and Omar must give that judge a headache. 🤯
_Taylor admitting that she willingly married a man that had been so cruel and manipulative. Omar talking about how they have consummated their marriage spiritually and emotionally, even if not physically, how they have made a commitment_ -even when both of them knew that Taylor was already married to someone else.
With the climax of the Macy/Anthony/Thorne storyline, we're getting the grand showdown we should have gotten when Sheila's current arc wrapped (Sheila's goodbye party was far more underwhelming than I remember it being). It gives the show more life than it's had in ages. An entire episode or episodes could easily be dedicated to wrapping up this storyline in an effective and exciting way. Alas it's consistently nudged aside by the trite A (Morocco) storyline which is so dull and repetitive, that it comes across as filler.
I absolutely agree! The Macy/Anthony storyline is the most interesting thing going on right now by far. But guess what the writers will do when it culminates? We'll get frequent scene cuts between this major life-or-death showdown and scenes with _Jessica and her mother cooking dinner..._ 🙄

Here we have the judge wondering _how he should justify a decision in Taylor's favor, when she had shown so little regard for her own marriage, she had married another man with full knowledge that her husband was still in LA_ and believed her to be dead. Taylor tells the judge that she did that just for one reason - *_she did it for her husband_* .
I am surprised that the judge didn't need more than 24 hours to consider that bigamy case, the *unlcean hands* and what marriage should be upheld by the law.
Today the judge seemed to be tending towards Connor's augmentation (even used the *unclean hands* terminology too), but tomorrow he will have changed his mind, won't he?

*Taylor, Macy and "double deals"*
This is another one of those "monothematic" episodes I like so much!
I wrote in another post how in this episode Macy makes a "deal with the devil" but doesn't consider it binding because she has a prior commitment to Thorne. The way Thorne and Macy repeated their wedding vows in the prison cell after his ar rest, to confirm their validity in spite of the ceremony being interrupted, gains significance now because this is what "invalidates" Macy's Faustian deal, making it possible for her _not_ to live up to her end of the agreement with Anthony (otherwise, an archetypal deal with the devil is usually a binding contract, but in this case, Macy's promises to Anthony are meaningless because from a moral and narrative point of view, she has already entered into another "binding contract" with Thorne).
The point where it becomes interesting is that meanwhile in court, this is _the exact case that Taylor is making for herself!_ Taylor also has a prior "binding contract" to the man she loves, and she argues how this contract invalidates the promises she later made to Omar. She justifies herself by claiming that Omar deceived her, and states that the true reason she did it was because she was making a sacrifice for Ridge. _All of this_ applies to Macy's situation as well. So while Macy's "double deal" is playing out in reality with life-and-death stakes, Taylor's "double deal" is playing out in court, in a stylized fashion, with a judge about to determine whether or not Taylor's position (and, by extension, Macy's) holds up in the eyes of a higher justice system.

So in terms of narrative logic, in order for Macy to be able to break her "deal with the devil" and escape unharmed, the judge has to rule _in Taylor's favor_ - if it is determined that Taylor has no obligation to Omar, then Macy is also freed from her obligation to Anthony.

LOVE this comparison Annie! Indeed Taylor marrying Omar can also be viewed as a deal with devil (like becoming the Dark Princess/Dark Bride). Another way her situation is similar to Macy's is that Taylor didn't consummate that deal, didn't go to bed with Omar thus retaining some vestige of "purity" just as Macy avoids having s ex with Anthony. The difference between them is also instructive: Taylor made a mess of her situation and showed doubt in Ridge's love for her while Macy is fully trusting in Thorne's love and in fact they are in this together, united in her deception and se d u c ti on of Anthony (whereas when Taylor was married to Omar, Ridge was completely unaware and she hid it from him for a long time). And Macy risking her life to save Thorne pays off, she completes and honors the sacrifice while Taylor goes back on the sacrifice she tried to make for Ridge. In the end, these distinctions are why Macy "earns" her happy ending and Taylor doesn't and why Macy remains more true to the Good Girl archetype.

@@NewYorkNick0607 those are great additional points that further reinforce the parallel! And there are also certain similarities in how Omar relates to Taylor, and how Anthony relates to Macy. Both men strive to deny the women their freedom and subjectivity, replacing the real woman with a fantasy image they create in their mind ("Princess Laila" and "dark Macy", respectively). But again, there are differences in how Taylor and Macy navigate the situation, where Taylor first submits to Omar's fantasy and then rebels (somewhat ineffectually) against it, while Macy _plays along_ with Anthony's fantasy and uses it to her own advantage.
I also agree that in these storylines, Macy stays true to her Good Girl archetype while Taylor does not. Not because Taylor actually does anything _bad,_ but because Taylor is _not taken seriously_ in the writing. This also ties into what you said about how Omar's villain status is diminished (while Anthony's villain status has by now reached demonic proportions). Also, like you said, Taylor's archetype suffers because for a very long time, she has had no clear goal in mind, while Macy has been laser focused on one (honorable) objective.
To sum it up, I think the characterization for Macy is at this point far superior to the characterization for Taylor. Both characters have changed during the course of their storyline, but while Macy has experienced organic character _growth,_ Taylor has been put through character _dilution._
