    Instead of apologizing to Thorne for ignoring him while he's in prison for murder, Stephanie apologizes to Maggie for being remiss in her hostess duties. She blames it on her family crisis: again not Thorne facing the death penalty, but Ridge having two wives. 🥴

    Y&R fans will recognize another "echo" in Macy's storyline. *Christine/Cricket* once wore a wire and pretended to be interested in *Michael Baldwin* to get a taped confession that he s ex u a l l y harassed her while she was a paralegal working for him. She got the confession but he discovered the ruse, ripped the device off of her and threw the tape out the window. Paul managed to find the smashed tape, which was originally distorted, and clean it up to extract the confession. Baldwin was one of Bill Bell's greatest villains (before they rehabilitated him) and similar to Anthony in his diabolicalness and sketchiness with women. And there are other similarities: both Anthony and Michael were talented and admired in their professional fields; just as Macy is a Good Girl, Christine was the Goodiest Good Girl of them all; and just as Anthony framed Thorne for murder, Michael set up Christine's husband Danny to make it seem like he was having an affair.

    *Narrative form and musical form in the Anthony storyline*
    It's actually quite ingenious how this entire storyline is like a kind of fever dream containing twisted fragments of many previous plot points from Thorne and Macy's story arcs. Here, the malfunctioning tape recorder reappears, earlier, it was the "ghost-written" letters to Macy, Thorne being mani pu lated into having vio lent ag gre ssive feelings towards another person (Deveney making him go after Ridge, Anthony making him go after Ivana), and then of course Lt. Burke and his connection to the last time Thorne was a suspect in a case of (attempted) unalivement. Then there's the multiple references to scenes from Anthony's first months on the show (my "palindrome".) The recurring Shakespearean references. And the parallel between Macy being wrongfully ar rested for the BeLieF theft and Thorne being wrongfully ar rested for Ivana's unalivement (and in both cases Thorne trying to warn Macy that the guilty one is the guy friend she's currently living with and who wants more than a platonic relationship with her - although Thorne was probably wrong about Jake, but right about Anthony). Also, the way Macy accidentally spying on Thorne and Anthony, understanding the truth, and pretending to reject Thorne (but clearing it up through communication) parallels Thorne accidentally spying on Macy and Jake, getting the wrong idea, and _actually_ rejecting Macy (and failing to communicate to clear up the misunderstanding). And of course the parallel of Macy risking her life to put on a show for Thorne's sake, first in Rotterdam, and now with Anthony.
    The way all these themes are juxtaposed and mixed reminds me of musical form. One of the most brilliantly structured symphony movements in music history is the finale of Mozart's Jupiter Symphony. In it, various musical themes are introduced and developed throughout the piece, and finally in the very last section (the coda, in musical terms), Mozart reveals his hand by showing how _all these themes can, in fact, be played together at the same time._ What happens here is actually quite similar (the structural idea itself, that is - I am not at all comparing Brad
    🔔 to Mozart in terms of genius) -seemingly unrelated themes and plot points from the entire character histories of Thorne and Macy that were introduced separately over the course of many years are suddenly "played together" in _one single storyline,_ in what amounts to the "finale" of Thorne and Macy's story arc.

    *Macy's power failure*
    It's fitting that, just like on a previous occasion when Macy attempted to take control of the plot, she uses a tape recorder to do it. And just like the last time (her taped message to Thorne that Bill intercepted), her plan is thwarted by batteries running low. In other words, she wants to control the plot, but she *literally* lacks the _power._
    Again, the show is equaling Macy's "narrative voice" with her _actual voice,_ fitting neatly into what I've referred to as Macy's "overarching character theme" of *making her voice heard* - of being listened to, believed, and taken seriously. This time, she is trying to accomplish that using a tape recording of a conversation between herself and Anthony.
    And like Bill Spencer before him, Anthony takes away Macy's narrative control by getting hold of her tape (her "voice") - whoever controls the tape controls the plot.

    • @NewYorkNick0607
      @NewYorkNick0607 6 місяців тому +12

      I knew you would have a good take on the tape theme after these last two episodes! 🙂 As we've discussed before, tapes and letters are ways for the writer to put crucial information through an indirect channel so that other characters can try to intercept it and direct the flow of the plot. We saw this with Macy's taped message to Thorne (that Bill intercepted), with Ridge's letter to Caroline (that Brooke intercepted), with Karen's letter to Connor (that Sheila intercepted). etc. We even had an example of a _video tape_ (Stephanie spying on Ridge and Brooke in the lab).
      What's so interesting about the use of this device in Macy's storyline is 1) her status as a recording artist which makes the presence of tapes more fitting and 2) the fact that a recorded confession is _the only thing_ that can save Thorne here. In most other examples, the letters and tapes are a bit contrived because the person writing/recording can easily just speak to the other person and deliver the news directly (Ridge could've told Caroline his feelings etc). But here there is no way to get Anthony to confess to the cops. He _has_ to be recorded. The tape this time functions more like the video recording of Ridge and Brooke which was _the only way_ Stephanie could discover and prove their affair.
      In this storyline, the tape works not only as theme and symbol (Macy and Thorne's singing) but as a literal and logical goal that must be achieved to resolve the plot.

      @@NewYorkNick0607 great points! Also, in keeping with our Disney theme, this is the part at the end where Ursula realizes she is almost losing her deal with Ariel, so she uses the -tape recorder- seashell with Ariel's voice in order to get back control of the plot and prevent Ariel from outwitting her.

    @annieo6527 6 місяців тому +7

    I have commented previously on the Shakespearean references in Macy's storyline, and here we have two of them in the same scene sequence. First, the "play within a play" set up by Macy, Darla and Saul in order to prove an unaliver's guilt by capturing his reaction to the (attempted) unalivement being reenacted in front of him, which is an idea from Hamlet. Second, Macy (again) cast as Desdemona, as Anthony finds the incriminating tape (the equivalent of the handkerchief in Othello), sees it as evidence of her betrayal, and decides she must die as a result.
    This is the second time in this storyline that Anthony shifts from a "Iago position" (malici ous manipulator) to an "Othello position" (actively vio lent), both times _freeing_ Thorne of what would normally be Thorne's "Othello tendencies". The first time, Anthony set up Thorne to take the fall for Ivana's unalivement but instead of Thorne being driven to actually com mit ting the cr ime, Anthony stepped in and did it. This time, Thorne is surprisingly calm about Macy's engagement to Anthony, while Anthony is the one who flies into a jealous ho mi ci dal Othello-like rage at the discovery that Macy has been deceiving him.
    So we've had a transition in the characters of Thorne and Anthony, where Anthony was basically introduced in order to redeem Thorne. We started out several years ago with Thorne as Iago AND Othello (convincing _himself_ of the false narrative that Macy couldn't be trusted), then had Anthony as Iago and Thorne as Othello (Anthony mani pu lating Thorne into believing in Ivana's guilt and leading Thorne towards a confrontation with Ivana), and now we have Anthony as Iago AND Othello (first trying to deceive other people, then overcome with jealousy and anger when he realizes that Macy has turned the tables on him), leaving Thorne free of both these "undesirable" character traits, thus completing his redemption.

      Annie, another great post about Macy storyline. And it explains what, I have to say, I found odd in Anthony's last line. He is still calling Macy his "fiancée" after discovering she has been deceiving him all along.

    • @annieo6527
      @annieo6527 6 місяців тому +1

      @@babs4848 great point! Yes, Anthony still calling Macy his fiancée reinforces his perception of himself in the "Othello" role as the "betrayed spouse".
      However, unlike Desdemona who is completely innocent, Macy is actually _both innocent and guilty_ - she _has_ indeed deceived Anthony, but she _hasn't_ broken her vows to her *true* fiancé.

    • @NewYorkNick0607
      @NewYorkNick0607 6 місяців тому +2

      This is terrific Annie! I love following Thorne's trajectory through your essay (which ties together the Othello connections you've been making for a long time now). I also love the idea that to escape prison and the trap Anthony has set for him, Thorne also has to escape this classic form that his character has been moulded from. In a way it gives JT's version of Thorne a real "ending" doesn't it? And then we transition to Windsor Harmon whose Thorne feels like a different character altogether.

    • @annieo6527
      @annieo6527 6 місяців тому +2

      @@NewYorkNick0607yes, exactly this! Like I commented in another post on the narrative form of this storyline, this does feel like the "finale" of the Thorne/Macy story arc (and as such, it brings together all these plot elements that were introduced earlier over the years). The contrast between Thorne's (non-) reaction to Macy's engagement to Anthony now, and Anthony's strong reaction to Macy's "betrayal", is striking, especially considering how negatively (and Othello-like) Thorne reacted years earlier at the mere idea of Macy working in the same building as Anthony.
      Winsor Harmon's Thorne does seem like a different character altogether and all the storylines that follow the recast have the feel of one of those "unnecessary sequels" where in order to create new drama, the characters have to regress and undo their previous character growth.
      By the way, I just realized another thing that reinforces the impression of Anthony as the "new Othello" - what ultimately makes him decide to k ill Macy isn't the tape as such but its _movements._ Desdemona losing the handkerchief or Macy dropping the tape isn't enough. But then the handkerchief ends up with Cassio (who gives it to Bianca for her to study in detail), and the tape ends up with Darla (who gives it to Burke for him to study in detail), and _this_ is the "proof" that makes Othello/Anthony decide to unalive his own wife/fiancée.

    How refreshing to have a solid, Hitchcock-like villain on this show. Anthony's one of the "fly by night" Brad Bell creations that could have actually had a longer lifespan on the show. If only Brad could figure out what to do with him.

    • @annieo6527
      @annieo6527 6 місяців тому

      I love how you describe him as Hitchcock-like! That thought has crossed my mind too how the Macy/Anthony scenes have a Hitchcock feel to them. Especially their last dinner that's coming up.

      @@annieo6527 they really do! Eerie, dangerous and suspenseful. If only B&B did more of these darker stories, as opposed to consistently rehashing love triangles. Although, as you guys have discussed below, maybe Brad was drawing on the Bill Bell template here. It's too clever and well crafted to come from him alone.

    • @annieo6527

      @@leviaj1 I know! This storyline does feel really well crafted but also like a completely separate show from the Taylor/Ridge/Brooke triangle. Almost like it was written by a different person altogether.

    Now I've watched 2080 episodes, watching several episodes every day. Bold and the Beautiful - 1995 (S8 E329) FULL EPISODE 2080 These episodes are from 1995. Why do I have to wait for a new episode every day here on UA-cam? Since they are from 1995, I will never finish the entire series as long as I live with only one episode per day.

    Stephanie to Maggie: _Well, you re as young as you feel._ Considering that Stephanie once had an issue with 20 year old Dylan having a sexual relationship with minor 17 year old Jessica, will Stephanie have an issue too with a Dylan-Maggie pairing? Who needs to be protected? College students Dylan - a man with wisdom beyound his years? Or naive mama Maggie Forrester?

    Maggie says that she had difficulty making friends which Stephanie finds hard to believe.
    I'm with Stephanie on this as I would want to be friends with Maggie and be with her forever.
    Plus there is a reminder of the kiss between Maggie and Dylan and that should have been me kissing my wife Barbara as I love her so much.

    Good writing making the tape sound distorted…This was the way to get Anthony to allow Darla to get her hands on it.He doesn’t think it would be useful.Wrong! The suspense of what Anthony will do next has me enjoying this storyline .It’s funny how the Spectra clan are doing everything possible to free Thorne and The Forresters “ Top concern “ is Not Thorne despite what Steff told Eric .The actions prove otherwise.It’s all about Ridge as always.They can’t even mention him when discussing family problems
    Ridge said “ All this with Sheila and all”. …Steph says to Maggie “ At least Ridges situation will be solved”
