      Yea I agree man the winds have not been in Jerseys favor. With all the south and east winds it’s been brutal on trying to fish the Ocean. Haven’t seen one week with solid west winds in any directions. It’s all been south and east winds to make the ocean almost unfishable.

      Softer rods absorb the rapid jigging efforts that I prefer, which is why I've cut some of my rods to stiffen them slightly.

    I so envy you getting to fish for "flatties" of these sizes, John. The UK's flounders are crap by comparison with tiny mouths. So much so that a 3lb flounder would be a rare fish for the majority of us!
    Oh yeah, I was SCJ video this morning on the new SPRO bucktails you were consulted upon. VERY nice looking toys that I can only hope make their way over to this side of the ditch.

    Hello John. I’ve been reading about bucktails in your summer flounder book and it totally makes sense about the placement of the eye for vertical jigging. I always use SPRO for this application. My question is can you use those same bucktails for casting from the surf or kayak? Otherwise I’d look into the andrus bucktails. I’d appreciate your thoughts on this. Thank you.

    Hi John. Thanks for all the videos and BTW I purchased your Fluke Mastery course. I noticed at 21:13 that the knob of your J+H Tackle Quantum Accurist Power Handle is missing the chrome cap . Did your knob come off suddenly in your hand as you were cranking? If so, did you post it on youtube? I would love to have seen your reaction because I purchased the same handle off of ebay and that happened to me on the first trip using it. Luckily I had a second setup that I was able to use. I purchased another handle and the exact same thing happened again. I wrapped a layer of Scotch tape over the spindle and jammed the knob tightly back on and it has been holding so far but I have to be careful to not let saltwater get into the bearing. I see that J+H now has a disclaimer on top but I don't think it is a rare occurrence.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  5 років тому

      It came off, but I realized it just needed to be put back on and tightened and then it was fine. See if you can tighten it so you don't have to deal with the tape.

    Great video John. If I may, I'd like to ask a rig question. When using a jig & teaser combo should both be identical in color? Also, how do you determine the color you use on a given day? Is it weather type, time of day? Thanks.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому

      The colors definitely don't need to match. It's actually not a bad idea to mix, to see if maybe they prefer one over the other. I really don't have a good answer as to a solid strategy for choosing, other than starting with white unless I know something else has been working well recently. I've been doing well with white recently, but was all out of white Gulp on this trip, so used what I had (green). Now I guess I'll start with green next trip!

    Do you recommend the Tsunami Trophy 6' 8" Heavy Conventional Slow Pitch Jigging Rod with the Quantum Accurist 100HPTA & Jigging World Power Handle Combo for fluke fishing?

  • @Aristoi78
    @Aristoi78 6 років тому

    Hi John, I want to get a new spiral wrapped rod and am torn between the jigging world rod in this video 701H and the Tsunami slow pitch 761XH rated 3.25-7oz. This JW rod maxes out at 6oz, and saw your comment that it is on the money with tip mod. I really don't want to hack another rod and even if I do concerned it wont be enough. I regularly need 3-6oz bucktails (S&S swing hook of course) and mostly fast jig and sometimes need to switch to 8-10oz of lead and concerned this will be too light. Which rod would you recommend? Jigging world also has the 761H rated for 4-10oz but concerned that might be too much rod for my weight range. Thanks for you help and great vids, been very helpful.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому

      Contact Jigging world and ask them to trim the Nexus 7' 20-50# as I did in the video, which is just behind the wrap on the last guide, or about 4''. They will understand what you're asking. I think you'll like it as much as I do. Personally I don't like the slow pitch rods for jigging.

    Hey John, the tsunami rod you link to in the info section of video, can that handle an 8oz sinker if you are in deeper waters in Long Island off Montauk in rougher weather? Or is just for like a bucktail lure of about 4ozs? I am a novice at this, just ordered your book btw!

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  5 років тому

      We fish those deeper waters often at Montauk and I never need 8 ounces. The key is to not use heavier than 15# braid. That tsunami rod is not good beyond 4 ounces. I would suggest the nexus rod instead. There's a link for that one too.

    • @Floydhotspur
      @Floydhotspur 5 років тому

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  5 років тому

      Assuming you mean the nexus H, I cut 4 inches off that tip and the rod is awesome 1-6 ounce. 15# braid all the way. Rod ratings often make no sense.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому

      When you need to go to 5 or 6 ounces, you can tuck the longer butt under your arm and that gives the leverage to put action on those heavier jigs.

    Never heard skinner curse so much at mr. Halkias. That’s weird haha. But understandable. Sorry halkias. Your revenge will come soon. One of you guys will outfish skinner some day. But overall great video. Thanks mr. Skinner. I just converted my 7ft heavy Tsunami classic and cut the 4” from the tip like you did. Will try it out soon enough. Btw are those new Quantum accurist S3 baitcasters come With the flipping switch? Looks like it

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому

      Yes, S3 is almost identical to the current accurist. I'll go easier on Halk. He's just such a fun target sometimes.

    you guys mostly hold the rod in your right hand and switch over to left when a fish is on so why not get left hand retrieve reels? i got one and it feels normal because my right arm is stronger

    • @johnsweeney1400
      @johnsweeney1400 6 років тому

      Personally I can't. I have to reel with my right hand.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому

      And for me, you see how I set the hook with my left hand above the reel for leverage, and then the reeling hand becomes the right hand.

    Hey John thanks for posting all these. I have learned more watching your videos than all the years I have spent with a rod in my hands. I am looking for a good all around rod and reel for fluke fishing as well as stripers. What do you think about the 6.5 tsunami slow pitch paired with the quantum Accurist?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому

      I don't like the slow pitch for fluking because the tip is soft. Check out the nexus that I linked to in the description. At a lower price, the tsunami classic H will handle stripers just fine.

    What tackle shop cut down your nexus rod 4" ?

    • @adamwkhan8110
      @adamwkhan8110 5 років тому

      You can do it yourself. He has a tutorial vid on the channel on how to do it. Bring it to a tackle shop to put a new tip on it and you’ll be fine

    Does the nexus replace your Tsunami rods that you used to use?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому

      I'm fishing in the morning. I'm bringing the Nexus and the cut Tsunami H. I'm not bringing the XH as I normally do because I can jig 5+ ounce on the Nexus if I have to. I'll probably end up using both, but the Nexus could be used for the entire 1.5- to 6-ounce range that we fish. It is more than double the price of the Tsunami though.

    • @longislandfishing6150
      @longislandfishing6150 6 років тому

      I just got the Nexus yesterday and im trying to figure out if I even need the Tsunami H model any more. I guess it cant hurt to have both. And if you think about it even though its more expensive it can cover what normally 2 rods can do.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому

      I always figure it's good to have a rigged backup, if for nothing else than to get back in the water right away after a snag, and then re-rig while the boat's going up for the next drift. Or I'll have two rigged with different weights.

      With 4 inches off the tip the rating is right on the money.
