- One of the most frequently asked questions on my fluke videos in the Comments section is "what rod is that," and "why don't you do an overview of your fluke set ups?" So here it is. If you watch til then, you'll see I make the point that at the end of the day, you should use what you're comfortable with.
This video only details my personal gear selection. At the end of the day, use what works for you and what makes you happy!

If I’m not mistaken in Jersey we are starting up on May 22nd 2021 at 3 fish 18 inch like usual
Also John looking for a new nexus conventional rod to pair up with my Siegler Sgn. Gonna be bottom fishin for tog in jersey slinging at most 8oz. Maybe 10 if it gets that bad. I also wanna have something I can troll plugs of my kayak with.. would you recommend the MH, H or XH?
Great information on rod and reels. Can't wait for the fluke fishing videos to get started back up again. Past couple of days in the 80's here in NC make me want to go fishing!
Good job on the video. 👍👍 on the review it definitely helps to decide what to buy and try. Been watching your videos and Skinner's video's over and over tryn to decide which rod to get , based on the action of the rod, on hook sets. X or XH. Been using tsunami classic chopped from way back when Skinner posted his first rod chop. Really want try the Nexus thou.
Saw your link to your Charter added it to the Bucket list , to fish with a few of my childhood fishing buddies to experience NY fishing in the near future , cause you put them on the fish. Enjoying the video's as we wait for the season to start. Catch'em up !!
Awesome...I've been using 15 lb. braid for all my fishing....Fish on
Nice set ups ....only problem with braided line is it's hard to untangle
Thanks for the tip on the S&S Raging Rattler. I'm going to give them a try. Appreciate it.
Good luck!
Caught my pb on 10lb last year will never use over 15 again. Great video as always John. My next setup is going to be a penn fathom low profile and a jigging world ghost hunter
Thanks John all your videos are very informative and give me advantages over most or all of the rest of the boat.
Thanks Anthony! That means a lot. Catch em up this year!
John, love the gear reviews, keep it up. Great to hear a different view
Thank you James
I’m all about going light especially when you’re fishing finesse and really want to enjoy fishing. When I went light on braid, I stopped tangling with others. People have no idea how much 20+lbs braid will have resistance when fishing deep sea..
It's amazing how light braid cuts through current. I'm in FL and I see so many people fishing 60-80lb braid for inshore saltwater. It's like using kite string. I throw 40lb as the heaviest and that's my rod used for snatching slot snook and huge black drum out from bridge pilings.
You can turn some big fish with 10-20lb braid and the right knots!
I honestly think this is one of the biggest difference between guys who catch regularly and guys who don’t. I’ve been on party boats where the guy next to me insists you need 40 or 50 pound braid they are scoped out to Nova Scotia and they refuse to believe the reason I’m vertical is my small diameter braid
@@jiggingjerks they say 10% of the guys catch 90% of the fish. The difference between the 10% is we always listen and adapt. None of us were born knowing any of what we know now. Everyone thinks since braid is so much smaller then the mono equivalent you should go much heavier lb test rather then utilize such a small diameter.
Look at the guys jigging Deepwater they run light braid and jig 600+ feet! And they hook some hard fighting fish.
Maryland and Delaware
16.5 inches 4 per person, no season
I love to use bait casters to catch fluke especially because I fish from shore
Thank you! So open all year?
@@jiggingjerks Florida just changed our regs to 14" minimum 5 a piece. Used to be 12" min. 10 a piece. Which was way to small. And a closure from October 15 through November 30.
@@jiggingjerks yeah man all year long
Just ordered 3 of those rattlers, gonna give them a try…. From Tackle World though, J&H search had none. I swore I’d never buy penn again but caved this past weekend for a penn slammer 3 4500 and a penn carnage 2 jigging rod. I have a mix of spinning and conventional too. I think I’m ready for this season. Great vid!
Good luck with them! I just checked J&H’s website and I do see them listed. Did you call them to order?
@@jiggingjerks nah I just went online last night while I was watching the video lol, I searched by name and came up with no results found… even in the S&S section, weird, but I got them at Tackle Direct.
@@Guywithoutahobby LOL ok - maybe they added them today
This was super informative, waiting for the Nexus 7ft spining to re-stock by me.
Yeah - they are in short supply hence why I bought that Crafty One custom. He had a few blanks in stock
@@jiggingjerks the crafty custom one is a good looking rod. Hopfully they are in stock before Fluke Season.
@@Matt_732 Michael Kim at Tackle World had told me he hopes to have them restocked sometime in April.
@@jiggingjerks local tackle shop said about the same.
I like to alternate between using a spinning and conventional rod every hour or so....I find that each rod uses a different set of arm/shoulder muscles-thus my arm/shoulder doesn’t tire out as easily/quickly.
That’s and excellent point! When I use the conventional set up, it tends to be more of that rapid jigging and when I use the spinner, it’s more deliberate. To your point, I’m using different muscles for each
Awesome Johnnie boy see you in august bro 🎣
Can’t wait!
Great video John. I love your boat videos because you go into such detail and now I love your tackle videos. I looked up that quantum reel and it too has the flipping switch so for the extra 20 or so dollars what do you get? Probably a stronger drag. Still looking for a boat but the price of used boats are ridiculous. I bet these guys are selling their boats for more than they paid for them. I’m going to concentrate on getting a truck to pull the boat first then look for a boat after the summer. They say the best time to buy a new boat is in December.
Things will get better as the world gets normal. So many new boaters in the last two years and some pressure on the supply line has created insanely low inventories right now. You may need to wait a year or so till things start getting back to normal
Great gear review John! Made my Saturday morning :-). Have you considered trying a Daiwa Lexa or Shimano Tranx? They seem to be super popular reels.
Not for fluke - they are great but the Quantum reels are much cheaper and have the flip switch. Thanks for the kind words and look forward to our trip this year!
Thank you for making all these video's. My sons and I are big fans and follow all your video's. I have a question? what tye of leader line do you use ? Do you tie leader line directly to Braid? The other end tie directly to the RIG? Please keep doing what your doing it works. I have a 22'robalo and fish the raitian bay as well as sandy hook. Again thank you for what you do & please be safe.
Hey Tony - thanks for the kind words - it’s unbelievably appreciated! I use Seaguar Blue Floro - mostly 30 pound. I usually use a Tsunami or Spro 50 pound swivel between braid and leader. Lots of folks scoff at that but I learned that from Skinner. Robalo is one of my favorite brands and that 22 is a heavy 22. I bet she rides great. By the way, I watch this quirky, old Robalo video a few times a year. Don’t ask me why. ua-cam.com/video/qiI3pw3zR_A/v-deo.html
Best of luck this year and stay safe as well!
Loved the reviews.
Thank you Tom!
Oh man idk why I thought this was a skinner video. Was so confused when I heard the voice lol. Great video though! How you like the evict? Loving mine so far.
Amazing reel especially for the price!
in NJ its 3 fish @ 18 open May 22
Thank you!
John - wondering how you like your crafty one? What are the specs on it? Was looking at something similar from c1c for buck-tailing fluke
I like it but didn’t use it much this year. It’s based on a Jigging World Nexus MH Spinning rod.
You have blackfish jigs on a couple of those spinning reels. Do you use the same 10lb braid for blackfish jigging also? Any issues trying to horse them out of the rocks on that light line?
No issues. The spots we fish are small boulder beds and with 30 pound floro it’s not a real issue to get the fish out. And yes, I use 10 pound braid for tog as well
Can you post a link for that rod? The one I found on the site says 7’. Nothing about being cut down. Thanks
Which rod specifically?
@@jiggingjerks the orange one that you said is a 7ft rod that is cut down a few inches. I think it’s orange in color. Thanks
@@jiggingjerks lol sorry the orange one. The one that’s a 7’ and they took a few inches off. Thanks
@@ATC235 it’s this one….

@@jiggingjerks thank you
Jerseys may22 18in 3 fish so we still have a wait I’ve been a power pro guys for years now 20lb in ocean 15 in river definitely have been thinking about going lighter tho. How many yards you get on the bigger reels even with backing curious from a cost stand point
None of the reels are use are really big, and a 150 yard spool of 10 pound braid is more than enough. I have been buying the 600 and1200 yard schools because I have so many real’s to fill
Makes sense and I’ve bought line in bulk before too probably a better way to go thanks for feed back and great video as usual tight lines
I have 7'6 nexus MH would you recommend that off a boat in Montauk for either Fluke or Stripers of is it too big of a rod length wise?
Depends. I don’t think it’s too big necessarily but I think if you are trying to jig more than 3 ounces it may be a little too soft. Then again, if you’re slow jigging, you are fine. Montauk get some huge stripers though LOL. I’m sure it will work for one of the cows they catch in the summers in the rips but it wouldn’t be my choice for stripers
Are you going to pick up one of the new Skinner / Dark Matter Jig and Bounce rods? Any initial thoughts on the rod?
No experience yet with it but I’m sure he will let me test it out. I’m actually working on a rod too (not that anyone will buy it lol) but still a few months out
@@jiggingjerks Dang, I always say Skinner costs me a lot of money... soon you will as well! Looking forward to seeing the details on your rod!
@@CrabberPA hahaha
How do you chop 4 inches off of the jigging world nexus heavy model?
Skinner has a good video on it. I have one too but like most videos, his is better. Wrap electric tape under second guise; with a small a small saw, cut the rod under that second guide; bring to a tackle shop and have them put new guide on. Or just get the XH :)
@@jiggingjerks thanks so much!
Pennsylvania flounder? Didn’t think they had any up there?
In the Poconos....winter flounder :)
Hi John. Love yours and skinners videos. I learn a lot from you. Was wondering if you can offer up some advice for me. I am in the market for a new fluke fishing rod. I mostly fluke fish in Jamaica Bay by boat and rarely venture out in the ocean(small boat). I have been looking at the nexus in MH rated at 1-4oz. Although we fish the bay, there is usually a stronger current by the bridges and channel. Would the MH be enough? Or should I got for the H? Thanks !
I’d just go XH - you’ll be fine up to 8 ounces. Skinner has a new Dark Matter fluke rod coming out soon too although, full disclosure, I haven’t used yet. I’m also working on an American made rod using a Seeker blank but that’s still a number of months away
@@jiggingjerks cool! Sounds good. I’m trying to go as light as possible. But I will take your advice and go hold a few rods to see. I saw that new skinner rod , it’s nice but not my favorite color 😂. It’s a contender for sure. Keep us updated on your new rod! Thank you!
Tidemaster Muskie!! 👏🏼
It’s actually a decent rod!
I use several St. Croix rods. I have a mojo inshore 7’ 6” for my heavy saltwater stuff like deep water blackfish. I think you have the tidemaster series confused with other freshwater rods that they make. My son uses a 6’6” tidemaster medium for fluke. I have several fresh water rods from St. Croix that I use because I like to go up to Lake Ontario tributaries and fish for steelhead and brown trout
@@robertgerber2533 I still have two of those rods - I’ll confirm which they are.
still using 10 lb braid 3 years later?
For fluke, yes
@jiggingjerks cool I might try it this year. I see you guys out there all the time. We fish the same areas. I usually use 30lb braid.
Damn wish I could go flukes fishing. 😭
You just get better! How did it go today?
@@jiggingjerks I'm home now. Neck is killing me but my hip hurt so much. Take took a piece of bone there to put in my neck. It hurt so much. Don't know how I'm going to sleep tonight
@@MrBabykela sorry bud. Trust that it will get better with time
@@jiggingjerks thanks bud. Hopefully I'll be ready by the fall. Good luck this year bud. Break your BP
Which rod paid the most dividends?
I’ve stopped trying to say dividends LOL - if I had only one to pick from each (spinning and conventional) it would be the Nexus 7’MH Spinning and the Nexus H 7’ Casting with 4 inches chopped
@@jiggingjerks BRING IT BACK!
Haha - I’ll try! Why do I feel like there is a drinking game involved
Show them uncle Jerry’s rod 🤪
Catching rods....
Miserable fail on the catching part lol....
Light tackle is the only way lol
