- In this video I go through how to replace the bottom ball joints on my MK5 Ford Transit - including problems encountered along the way. This process will be very similar for other vehicles so please feel free to use this as a guide for doing it yourself at home, using basic hand tools.

Note: I slightly modified this ball joint splitter to make the jaws wider for the bigger ball joint. This was a quick and simple modification using a grinding disc.

Grazie ai tuoi video ho deciso di fare manutenzione al mio ford del 1993 😂🎉🎉
A good and very useful video, thank you very much, greetings from Spain
Well done young man....not a job most people would task themselves with but you made it look quite straightforward 🏴
Thank you 😊
Well done buddy informative
Great vid mate ,good to see how you get around problems when it doesn't go to plan 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks man! 😁👍🏼
Great video and skills with practical no nonsense advice, keep up the good work!
Great video and awesome work. Please add to video information about moment of tight in Newton per meter. Thanks a lot
Thank you! 😁 torque specs are in the description
As always
Perfect vedio and very helpful.
Thanks
I just took the knuckles off as i thought it would be easier to start with 😂
I think delphi ones are about the best you can fit to them really. Should last well.
Must just advise putting the handle on your grinder, on the side it will shoot off to if it snags (usually has an arrow pointing this on the top), on bosch its on/off switch side. It will be better to be hit in the face with the handle than...
Keep up the good work, and nice videos, as I've shared a few of them to people so they can see what the job entails, before they have a go at it.
The shock is only 3 bolts off being out the way too.
That’s true, probably easier and quicker that way 😁 They seem to be very good quality and it’s noticeably better to drive now. I must admit I forgot it even had a handle, thanks for reminding me! 👍🏼 thanks mate, I really appreciate it 😁
For some reason, the last bolt on any job is usually the bugger to get off.
That's so true 🤔
My new ball joints arrived today. Think there was 3 different makes to choose from. I went with Bilstein and £30 for both sides delivered was good I thought. Hopefully get them fitted in the next couple of days or maybe I will get the track rod ends and do them at the same time. Thanks for your vid mate 👍
Top job 👊👊
Cheers mate! 👍🏼👊🏼👊🏼
Really good video my friend very interesting.
Thank you 😊
Good man, I have been waiting for you to do these before I do mine! love the videos, keep it up!
Thanks mate 😁👍🏼
@@TurnersWorkshop97 the thanks are all to you mate - best how to videos I've come across, you have everything covered!
Cheers mate. You still made it look fairly easy even with the cutting. No doubt I will be changing them some time in the future myself 👍
No worries mate! I didn’t include the swearing footage 😆 Hope it will be useful in the future 👍🏼
@@TurnersWorkshop97 ha ha I can imagine the kind of language, I’m same. I have full conversations with those bolts that won’t come of some times. Have you done any wheel bearings yet ? Or are they something that should be left to a garage. Sorry if you have a vid covering it and I missed it or forgot I’ve seen it. I’m thinking mine may need some front ones. Look forward to your next post. Thanks
@@terrycainarmit1982 front wheel bearing are very easy on these.you dont even need a press as they are tapered..just buy a decent brass drift and pack them with grease really well and leave a very slight end play
Haha that makes me feel better that I’m not the only one 😂 I haven’t had to change any bearings yet but as Sean said they are tapered roller bearings and straight forward to replace. I will make a video about the bearing replacement and adjustment in the future when I have one fail 👍🏼
@@seangreenwood8331 thank you mate 👍
Great stuff I done mine last year similar problems to yours the first one went okay and the second one gave me problems but got around it. Next job on mine is a new clutch
That’s on my to do list at some point as well👍🏼 planning to do the rear main seal at same time. Let me know how it goes mate 😁
💛💛💛
Great job mate, you seem to be doing the same jobs as me,next job is the dreaded anti roll bar links & bushes😌 mine needed a new spring for the mot & since I got it back it's knocking on the fos wheel which is either the ball joint or anti roll bar set up. But right now my son is out in it at Silverstone for the Moto GP,he gets all the pleasure in it & I get to fix it😅 still it's my turn next week on the road 👍 keep em smiling buddy👍
Thanks mate! Just picked up some new anti roll bar links myself 😅 very nice, it’s great that you all get the use out of it 👍🏼 enjoy your time away, going anywhere nice?
@@TurnersWorkshop97 thanks mate I'm going off to the peak District & then down to Bristol the following week, can't wait 😜👍
Looks lovely there mate 😍
donde puedo conseguir esas rotulas de ford transit ya que en mi país no se consiguen soy de costa rica saludos
Hi there, I got them from eBay. Link in description
@@TurnersWorkshop97 gracias
Have you done the UV steering joint?
I haven’t had to yet
how much do you grind off the splitter to make it fit?.think i read somwhere you need a 21mm opening for the mk5.,ive looked at buying the ones with bigger opening but they are all branded and cost a fortune
Hi Sean, I have put a link in the description to the one I have, eBay special 😅 I just used a grinding disc to widen the jaws so that it fitted the ball joint shaft diameter. Can’t remember the exact measurement as it was a bit of trial and error 👍🏼
hy Transit mate! Could you tell me how much mm the ball joint screw shaft diameter? (what kind of type ball joint splitter i buy, if i doesn't want to modified with grinding disc.) Thanks :)
Hi mate, the ball joint shaft is 24mm you might be able to get a bigger fork type that you hammer in to separate the joint.
ok that's a great idea! it will be, thank you very much!
Hi can you please help me and tell me how much is the weight on logbook thanks
Hi, the only weight I could find was from the Haynes manual and for the 190lwb it states 1758kg - 2075kg kerb weight with full tank. Hope this help 👍🏼
@@TurnersWorkshop97 thanks because on my logbook I think is a mistake is on 3650.kg same van
What year is that Transit
She’s a 1998 mk5 transit 👍🏼
@@TurnersWorkshop97 Thank you and thank God the newer ones bolt on
should have used 1 mil cutting discs
