When I was a teenager, one of our dogs got heartworm. He was the best dog we ever had, so my parents spent several thousand dollars to save his life. After several months of treatment, he recovered, but he suffered permanent organ damage. A few years later, he was blind and deaf, and his kidneys were failing. During the last week before we took him to the vet to end his suffering, I slept with him on the floor of my dad's study, so that he wouldn't be alone and scared during the night.
