"Everybody Hurts". Thats one of the best of REM. I remember seeing this video for the first time in MTV. I was in my first year of high school and I was mesmerized by the art.
@@BisscuteReacts The song "Everybody Hurts" by REM saved lives, without exaggeration. But definitely watch the Official Video of it. The impact is more keenly felt.
R.E.M. (Rapid Eye Movement... also called "rem") were an 'alternative' rock band formed in the early 80's in Georgia (in the USA 😁) They were signed to an indie label and released a string of fairly successful albums... They were signed to a major record deal in 1988 for a multi-million $$$ contract and delivered the album 'Green' that sold 4 million copies worldwide. 'Losing my religion' was a massive hit single in 1991 that set the whole 90's scene for the 'alternative rock' revolution... R.E.M.'s album 'Out of time' became an international hit, selling 4 million copies in the US, 12 million worldwide... and thrust the band into the spotlight w/ newer bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Green Day, Blur, Oasis, Weezer, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden, etc. R.E.M. recorded 'Out of time' and the next album 'Automatic for the people' (1992) acoustically and both albums were huge hits... 'Automatic for the people' sold 15 million copies worldwide & delivered hits like 'Drive'... 'Man on the Moon'... 'Everybody hurts'... 🔥🔥 Their 1994 album 'Monster' was a return to electric rock, followed by a tour and was R.E.M's biggest to date... more hits like 'Bang and blame'... "What's the frequency, Kenneth?" ... However, the band was wilting under the spotlight. R.E.M was originally - Michael Stipe (vocals), Peter Buck (lead guitar), Mike Mills (bass/ keyboards) and Bill Berry (drums)... As they became international superstars, Stipe was revealed to be gay under scrutiny, and he suffered a loss when Nirvana's Kurt Cobain (who was a close friend) took his life in 1994 ... Then drummer Bill Berry began suffering health problems... R.E.M. released 'New adventures in Hi-Fi' in 1996, but sales dropped to 4 million worldwide because of the decline of 90's 'alternative rock'. In 1997, drummer Bill Berry left the band and R.E.M. became a trio, using session drummers. Subsequent albums like 'Up' (1998) and 'Reveal' (2001) sold well, but not as much as the previous albums... After a few more albums, R.E.M. announced in 2011 that the band was ending after their 15th album 'Collapse into now'... Michael Stipe has stated that he has no plans to bring R.E.M. back. Other R.E.M. hits - 'Stand'... 'The one I love'... 'Orange crush'... 'The great beyond'... "It's the end of the world..."
R.E.M. was founded in Athens, GA, the same college town that gives us the B-52s, Widespread Panic, of Montreal, Drive-by Truckers, Neutral Milk Hotel, the Glands, Olivia Tremor Control, Azure Ray, Reptar, Dreams so Real, Love Tractor, Ravenstone, Japanncakes… REM’s album Automatic for the People was named for the slogan of a local soul food chef, Weaver-D. Weaver catered my fraternity house back in the 80s.
Oh alright! R.E.M. (pronounced as reading the letters separately and not as word) is a good band! They have lots of good songs, but "Everybody Hurts" is one that's really popular to react to, but you have to do the official music video version. Or if you want an older, more up beat song of their's "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" is a personal favorite that's been used in lots of movies and TV. Or "The One I Love" is another favorite.
@@BisscuteReacts actually... As usual, after I comment, I think of other stuff, but I don't want to overload you with too much because I'm sure you're already getting so much from everywhere, but just this one thing for now. So, I'm pretty sure R.E.M. (Rapid Eye Movement BTW), eventually migrated to New York, but they're originally from Athens, Georgia, which I believe is just a little college town in the American South. I just bring it up because so is another famous band the B-52s, and it's just funny that they both came out of what must've been such a small scene in an unexpected place. The B-52s also have a lot of songs, but if you're curious, "Love Shack" is a fun one that's one of their biggest hits that I think you'd dig.
My my, more than 30 years ago. I'm getting old. R.E.M. had a huge influence on pop music. Ushered in the the age of introspective indi pop. Old time rockers still resent them for that.
People have taken the title too literally for years, but as Michael Stipe explained, the title is a US Deep-South phrase (the band is from Athens, Georgia) meaning to lose your temper or run out of patience. Which makes sense given that he also said it’s about having a crush on somebody.😊
Being from Atlanta, hearing my grandma saying she was so angry at my poor & disgraceful lifestyle that she was close to losing her religion! (Like "you're doing such bad things that I, who loves you, is losing my Faith over it.) She said it only once. It was dire. But I got straightened out in my life. Her Faith held.
It doesn't help that the video is so full of religious imagery, especially the fallen angel. I personally prefer to take it literally, as a person losing all hope, or losing their faith, fits better with the tone of the song.
"Losing my religion " is a southern US expression that originated in the state of Georgia, beautiful state I might add, have family down there. It means to get mad at someone "that boy is gonna make me lose my religion!"
Had never heard this song before. I was walking by some random shop while in Prague and heard it. Stopped and looked up what it was. One of my most listened to songs now!
R.E.M. were such a talented band, not the best musicians in the world, but capable of crafting some of the finest alternative rock songs of the 80s 90s 00s. Check out Fall on me, The one I love, Man on the Moon, What’s the frequency Kenneth, Imitation of life
You pronounced the band name great! No worries! R...E...M. This is my favorite of many R.E.M. songs. A rock song that has no electric guitar, but a mandolin, an amazing bass line, and a bopping beat. Add a lyric that really can be open to fun interpretations...it's awesome!!! The phrase "Losing My Religion" comes from the southern United States (specifically Georgia, where R.E.M. is from). It basically means losing one's temper or feeling frustrated or desperate. The song itself is mostly about romantic feelings and needs. The official video won all sorts of awards and the song was everywhere in the 1990s...a huge hit.
The three albums that stay with me from the 90's are R.E.M. -"Out of Time" (with this song), Hootie and the Blowfish - "Cracked Rear View", and Alanis Morissette - "Jagged Little Pill." I enjoy them just as much today as I did when they came out. Thanks for this reaction.
Wow there is so much, dont just listen to the hits but explore deeper - Uberlin, It Happened Today, Accelerate, Nightswimming, Man on the Moon, Bad Day .... there is so much to explore from this fantastic band
R.E.M.'s songs are so great, sometimes catchy, sometimes melancholic or both. That's why they are one of my favourite bands. I'm glad that you give their music a chance. You should listen to more of their songs, they were quite rightly famous. I remember reading that they chose the name out of a dictionary because "they liked the dots" in it. Also, I always wanted to see more of that weird but fascinating dancing in the video.
Yes that is milk in that jug, this reference is likely due to the english expression 'don't cry over spilled milk' (which means don't get too worked up over small things you can't change) as that appears to be what it's symbolizing.
This song, if memory serves, is the biggest hit to ever feature a mandolin. If you want an alternative music cornerstone, I recommend What’s the Frequency Kenneth by REM. Thanks for the reaction, Bisscute.
So many great REM songs to try, I envy your journey - Imitation of Life, Bad Day, The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight, It's The End of The World As We Know It, Man on the Moon, Everybody Hurts, Shiny Happy People, Stand, Night Swimming, The One I Love,
"Losing my religion" is a Southern USA expression meaning "losing my calmness/cool/sh..t". The dance is likely awkward on purpose based on the motivation and meaning of the song (easily googled). Everybody Hurts is a great video as well.
The band was from Georgia. “Losing my religion” in the American South was often used to mean, “I got angry”, because a Gentleman or Lady from the South was not supposed to show anger while in proper company.
"It's the End of the World" was the first of their songs that I heard. It was in 1989 in an irish pub and it was played louuuuuuud, just the way it's meant to be heard. That made my otherwise shitty day and put me in a really fun mood ☺️
The other comments already said almost everything! REM were very big in the 90th. Around this time me and my girlfriend departed and whenever I hear this song I still remember her. Hope she is fine and not loosing her religion.:-)
You've got to here Drive, one of the most underrated songs they ever released. A true masterpiece, and the composition is genius, it builds with such perfect timing of increasing moments of tension and releases all the way through that just get more and more intense each time. If it doesn't blow your mind, nothing will 😂
This was a very notable milestone in the band's history, as while there had been music videos made for their previous songs, they had long resisted actually acting in them, sticking to cameos or comic posturing. The director was Tarsem Singh, who later made the gorgeous films THE CELL and THE FALL, and this is a good capsule of the style he would bring to those films.
Stipe's as you said "awkward" dance here it's just on point! It fitted just perfect. It's been 30 years already since I saw this masterpiece for the first time. Those movements amazed me so much then. And they still amaze me. They just catch you once and forever.
R.e.m is a Georgia based band who has been playing for 35, 40yrs and another great song for a amazing reaction is called orange crush,or what frequency Kenneth is a good one one for a reaction video 😮❤
Many Great songs by REM - Driver Eight, Radio Free Europe, The One I Love, The Finest Worksong and many others. Purchase their Album called Eponymous and Out of Time - Their music is pure GOLD!
Hello Bisscute ,I also love the title " What's The Frequency, Kenneth? " this group is for me one of the symbols of the 90s, the best years musically speaking
“Losing My Religion,” os an expression used in the southern US for losing faith in someone or giving up. It is when you are at the end of caring about something or someone.
Great band of last 40 years - SO influential - best song to go to next is hard, but "Everybody Hurts" may bring you to tears in all the best ways, so that is my vote - you rock always!
I think I recall reading once that to say you're "losing your religion" is a way of saying that you've become very angry, an expression in the southern U.S. I think this song is about him being excessively jealous in one of his relationships, nothing to actually do with religion.
Bisscute in the 80's and the 90's R.E.M. were the kings of college radio. The band is from Atlanta, Georgia. When you listen again maybe it will help you understand the song better if you know that "losing my religion" is a southern American expression for being frustratingly angry at someone. Listen again with that in mind.
Other songs i think youd like: “radio free europe”, “you are the everything”, “its the end of the world as we know it”, “man on the moon”, “everybody hurts”, “perfect circle”, & “orange crush”.....but there are a ton of great ones from them & u kind of cant go wrong with anything from them pre-1992 ... i think after kurt cobain died, something inside michael stipe died too (the lead singer & lyricist), they were quite close & had plans to make an album together, but it never happened.
Love your reaction.. REM are one of the most original bands.. you must listen to "Everybody Hurts" a classic. My favourites "Orange Crush" and "The One I Love" enjoy 👍🏻
Truly one of the greatest songs ever. Absolutely phenomenal and rem are a very incredible band. A true classic. Amazing video. If you haven't yet i highly recommend listening to some songs by muse.
R.E.M. ....Pronounced : are-ee-em ........it stands for “rapid eye movement” ....which is a phase of sleep, the phase in which a person is actively dreaming, i do believe....really amazing & influential band of the 80’s & 90’s....too many, they are the fathers of alternative music, they had a spectacular run of flawless albums from 1983 to 1992
Losing my religion my favorite song, R.E.M. was an American rock band from Athens, Georgia, formed in 1980, perfect beautiful Bisscute enjoy your reacted 👍❤
In the 19th century the Comte de Toqueville observed that in order to have intelligent discourse it is necessary for the parties concerned to first define their terms. You might be repulsed by, or you might be indifferent to religion, or you might be enamored by your particular brand of religion, but this is how I understand religion: ‘re’ - a prefix, indicating a repetition, e.g. re-member, re-turn, re-lax. To go back to. ‘lig’ - ligare, Latin, ‘to bind’, ‘ to tie down’. e.g. lig-a ture, lig-ament. ‘ion’ - a suffix, ‘an action or condition’. ‘re-lig-ion’ - to repeatedly go back to a state of bondage.
They do hit you in the feels. Early REM - Radio Free Europe, Driver 8, So. Central Rain, later REM Everybody Hurts and It's the End of the World as we Know It.
REM is a veritable gold mine of interesting songs. "Orange Crush", "Fire", "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?", and "Everybody Hurts" are the ones I would recommend.
The R.E.M. rabbit hole. Radio Free Europe. Gardening At Night. The One I Love. Can't Get There From Here. Driver 8. Orange Crush. It's the End of the World As We Know It. Low. Radio Song. Stand. Drive. Man on the Moon. Everybody Hurts. Nightswimming. Superman. What's the Frequency, Kenneth. The Great Beyond. At My Most Beautiful. Love me some R.E.M. I know I forgot some. There's just so much. Enjoy!
On this comment page, Torin Killan made the surprising statement that "they didn't really get good until the '90s" Many, many people will not only disagree but argue that they could have split in 1988 and we wouldn't have missed much. Like many bands before them, they poisoned themselves by staying together for far too long, heedless of the fact they'd become creatively defunct (circa 2000 if we're being generous, circa 1995 if we're being more honest). Erasing their influence and their artistic respect in the process. It will take a lot of "time and distance" for us to be able to approach them with a clear view, to assess what they contributed musically (and this even applies to their 1983-1987 peak period). For the time being they are fated to be misremembered as a two- or three-hit wonder from MTV's dying days. There's a lesson in here somewhere.
There is a movie of a live performance of R.E.M. called Perfect Square filmed at their concert in Weisbaden, Germany in 2004. Many of their best songs are included and they are superb live.
One of my favorites songs of all time, and yes, you said it well (R.E.M.), an alternative rock band from de later 80´s and 90´s, the time of their best successfull era. You must to react to "Happy People" or "Everybody Hurts". Nice react. Kisses...!!!
This was a very big song on MTV, back in the day. This song was covered by Lacuna Coil in 2012, if you'd like a more metal version. For another R.E.M. song, you might look at 'Shiny Happy People' with Kate Pierson of the B-52's.
I always thought this song was about religion as a kid. Its about him struggling with a failing or unrequited relationship. "Losing my religion" down south has the meaning that you are desperate and dont know what to do anymore. He coupled that with his sudden popularity "thats me in the spotlight".
would love to see your reactions on........ 1 - Amanda Lear - Follow me 2 - Grace Jones - i've seen that face before 3 - Kate Bush - Wuthering heights all unique female singers with a unique voice
Thanks, my girl! REM is such a great band.. and this is also a great song.. few people understand the lyrics.. and the video is strange! REM have so many other good songs.. I hope you react to more.. not just REM.. but others.. I'll be interested to see your feelings..

R.e.m is a Georgia based band who has been playing for 35, 40yrs and another great song for a amazing reaction is called orange crush,or what frequency Kenneth is a good one one for a reaction video 😮❤
You were correct in saying it the 1st time R.E.M. and all of Biss Nation says you Rock❤💙💙🥰☘️👋
“Everybody Hurts” is a banger and has a great music video.
Looking forward to listening to it ❤
Reminds me thematically of Madonna's "Confessions Tour" - one of the best shows I know of - especially the songs "Isaac" and "Forbidden Love".
Oh? ❤
Many Great songs by REM - Driver Eight, Radio Free Europe, The One I Love, The Finest Worksong and many others. Purchase their Album called Eponymous and Out of Time - Their music is pure GOLD!
Watching somebody listen,,,,,, I waited all my life for this ,,,thanks
Just watching again,,i love watching good to hear❤️❤️❤️
Thank you❤
Wow Bisscute picked up on a note/chord I have never heard before and will now never forget hahaha well done girl.
Hello Bisscute ,I also love the title " What's The Frequency, Kenneth? " this group is for me one of the symbols of the 90s, the best years musically speaking
Hello, got it ❤
I love this song! It's great that you have listed this masterpiece
Love ur reactions!
Thank you so much, glad I could bring it to you ❤
They are very closely associated with the B-52's. Both came from the University of Georgia and were art students for the most part.
“Losing My Religion,”
os an expression used in the southern US for losing faith in someone or giving up.
Orange Crush & The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite are another two masterpiece songs & videos to boot.................
Beautiful song beautiful reacction
Their live performance in Wiesbaden is simply magical, the show is called Perfect Square
LOVE this video. One of rock's best. ("don't cry over spilt milk" is an old English expression)
That song is based on a story by Gabriel García Márquez called An Old Man with Wings.
Love R.E.M. so many great unique songs. The End of the World as we know it is one of my favorite songs.
This is one of the best videoclip I have ever watched and one of the best song I have ever listened to!
Oooh, i just saw another person’s comment, a song called “night swimming” 😭😭😭😭, they were too good.
Talk about “feels”
Noted, thanks for the suggestion ❤
It’s the End of The World or Stand…those are 2 I recommend.
Love your reaction.. REM are one of the most original bands.. you must listen to "Everybody Hurts" a classic. My favourites "Orange Crush" and "The One I Love" enjoy 👍🏻
Thank you, glad you love them ❤
Truly one of the greatest songs ever. Absolutely phenomenal and rem are a very incredible band. A true classic. Amazing video. If you haven't yet i highly recommend listening to some songs by muse.
Saw them at Stirling Castle, brilliant concert.
R.E.M. ....Pronounced : are-ee-em ........it stands for “rapid eye movement” ....which is a phase of sleep, the phase in which a person is actively dreaming, i do believe....really amazing & influential band of the 80’s & 90’s....too many, they are the fathers of alternative music, they had a spectacular run of flawless albums from 1983 to 1992
Rapid, Eye, Movement....R-E-M.
Thanks ❤
Losing my religion my favorite song, R.E.M. was an American rock band from Athens, Georgia, formed in 1980, perfect beautiful Bisscute enjoy your reacted 👍❤
Thank you so much ❤
In the 19th century the Comte de Toqueville observed that in order to have intelligent discourse it is necessary for the parties concerned to first define their terms. You might be repulsed by, or you might be indifferent to religion, or you might be enamored by your particular brand of religion, but this is how I understand religion:
‘re’ - a prefix, indicating a repetition, e.g. re-member, re-turn, re-lax. To go back to.
‘lig’ - ligare, Latin, ‘to bind’, ‘ to tie down’. e.g. lig-a ture, lig-ament.
‘ion’ - a suffix, ‘an action or condition’.
‘re-lig-ion’ - to repeatedly go back to a state of bondage.
this song is evergreen...awsome
I'm glad you liked this song. I was a teenager when this song came out, and at the time, I was a shy, introvert, so I really related to the lyrics.
Thanks, glad you liked the reaction ❤️
You can spend hours exploring their lyrics and as musicians they are beyond accomplished.
REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement, and it is what the eyes do, when one is dreaming (moving side to side as one dreams).
They sometimes call those deep stages of sleep REM SLEEP, when one is dreaming.
The R.E.M. rabbit hole. Radio Free Europe. Gardening At Night. The One I Love. Can't Get There From Here. Driver 8. Orange Crush. It's the End of the World As We Know It. Low. Radio Song. Stand. Drive. Man on the Moon. Everybody Hurts. Nightswimming. Superman. What's the Frequency, Kenneth. The Great Beyond. At My Most Beautiful. Love me some R.E.M. I know I forgot some. There's just so much. Enjoy!
R.E.M. - It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) is my favorite song from them!
The best collab he did was with Kristin Hersh, the song your ghost, is incredible…
Oh? might have to give it a listen ❤
I love It R.E.M. listen immitation of life and Deftones lately i listen so much My own Summer
On this comment page, Torin Killan made the surprising statement that "they didn't really get good until the '90s"
Many, many people will not only disagree but argue that they could have split in 1988 and we wouldn't have missed much.
There's a lesson in here somewhere.
it is a good song .. does make you think .. thanks for doing this reaction Bisscute ..
This is probably their best track followed by Man on the Moon which is another masterpiece.
This was my favorite song for 20 years
There is a movie of a live performance of R.E.M. called Perfect Square filmed at their concert in Weisbaden, Germany in 2004. Many of their best songs are included and they are superb live.
I see ❤
One of my favorites songs of all time, and yes, you said it well (R.E.M.), an alternative rock band from de later 80´s and 90´s, the time of their best successfull era. You must to react to "Happy People" or "Everybody Hurts". Nice react. Kisses...!!!
Thank you, ill note those down ❤
Perfect. Love the way you roll your "R"s.
R E M, Rapid Eye Movement! I think this is where their name originated from? The part of sleep when you dream.
Ahhh Rapid Ear Movement... absolutely LOVE this song. (so many memories) Glad this is part of your journey :) x
Thank you for being a part of it ❤
This was a very big song on MTV, back in the day.
1 - Amanda Lear - Follow me
2 - Grace Jones - i've seen that face before
3 - Kate Bush - Wuthering heights
all unique female singers with a unique voice
Thanks for the suggestions, maybe someday ❤
R.E.M. Everybody Hurts you will love the song and lyrics!!!!
Noted ❤
Thanks, my girl! REM is such a great band.. and this is also a great song.. few people understand the lyrics.. and the video is strange! REM have so many other good songs.. I hope you react to more.. not just REM.. but others.. I'll be interested to see your feelings..
Your rolling "R" is soooo cute.
