Haven't heard this song in over 20 years and still remembered every single word. Damn, that's when you know a song impacted your life at the time. Thanks India, brought back great memories.
"Losing My Religion" is on old southern phrase that means "losing my mind". The beautiful and ICONIC video goes for a more literal interpretation with all the religious imagery from Hindu goddesses to doubting Thomas and St. Sebastian. But the song is more about being so consumed with one's feelings for someone that you begin to lose your sense of self.
I read that the music video was inspired by a short tale from Gabriel García Márquez, the author of 100 Years of Solitude, called "a very old man with enormous wings". Actually, I read the novel and you can certainly see its influence. Fantastic song, though A true classic!
I read an interview to Stipe, he basically was saying that the video went far too deep and gave a new meaning and perspectives to the song, he was not thinking about religion when he wrote the lyrics. I didn't know the meaning of "losing my religion" but it makes sense now.
Marcus Oh-really-yes It can also be a way of saying Being At Wits End. Peter Buck first thought that it was Stipe trying to make a religious statement when in fact it was a southern expression, he thought he was full of shit till a year later when he met an elderly woman praised R.E.M. for using that expression in a song.
I was just about to say the same thing. I’m a southerner and we say, “You’re about to make me lose my religion with that!” This is one of my very favorite videos, I like how Michael dances in it, he just loses himself here. Great song too.
Paulina Angel /PMI Music Group I listened to the song with my southern father in law who was in his 70s at the time and he loved it, he knew the meaning very well. One of my frequently played favorites.
Really love this song...my favorite song of theirs. The song speaks to the confusion, doubt, pain, distress, and not knowing what to do when you're dreams fail... All I can say is at 62 years old I have lived that song in my younger years.
Losing my religion is an old southern colloquialism that means something so upsetting has happened that you might "lose your religion". Stipe used this as a metaphor for being in love with someone who does not feel the same way. He eluded to this a couple of years ago; “You don’t ever really know if the person that I’m reaching out for is aware of me, if they even know that I exist.”
It's interesting how this song gets interpreted differently by each listener, which is the sign of any good art, really. But as others have mentioned 'losing my religion' means losing control, going crazy, doing something out of the norm because of frustration or desperation. It is an old Southern term, like 'about to lose my salvation'. I'm about to fly off the handle, essentially. But I think there is a lot of hurt and regret in the song. Failing to win the affection of the person you want and having to keep yourself under control seeing them with someone else. It's been a favorite of mine since it came out when I was in junior high.
REM's popularity in the underground/alternative rock scene had been bubbling up and this album, and specifically this single, broke them HUGE across the country. They aren't my thing but like some of their songs like Orange Crush, End of the World..., The One I Love, Radio Song ( w/ KRS ONE), Everybody Hurts, Man on the Moon, and Drive. I personally would buy a hits disc and be good with myself on the REM tracks I'd have in my catalog LOL.
That desperately awkward phase when you desperately want to confess feelings to your crush and yet, at the same time, you are desperately afraid to say anything about it to them.
Thanks for reacting to REM !!! They are sooooo good. Many songs to choose from in their catalogue. A few of my favs: Radio Song, Pop Song 89 and Star 69 .
This Group came out ... At a Time , when ... so , much about Pop music and tunes had Hollowed out .... This Group , REM ... seemed to Keep it Real ... They never Over Commercialized ... Their Front Man ... That Keep'in it Real ... Not overly commercial ... but , Truly marketable ... This Man ... This Front Man ... Seemed to have a Need ... Not just to Show and Express his Own personal Pain and Struggles ...through his Eclectic Voice ... But , I always thought he was ... Channeling ... A pain , sorrow , forlorning ... So , much more than Just this ... As for that Whole and Entire Generation. ... Yeah , I think he was Bearing the Soul for Millions ...of People ... He had Vision ... Always , kinda loved , respected this One !
One of the best songs ever! "Losing my religion" is a southern expression that pretty much means getting frustrated and losing your shit over something. In this case, he has feelings for someone; he's just not sure what to do or say about it. He's kind of beating himself up over it.
An all time favorite. Love your reaction. Reminded me of my awe on my first time seeing it. I had the album- loved the lyrics - and then the visual blew me away.
The video has notes of Caravaggio and Vermeer paintings. One must look artistically at this video to find the "meaning". Its truly individualized at how everyone looks at a situation. In the South there IS a quote "Lost my religion" and I think Stipe and Co. expanded on that beautifully. It's not about religion, its a love song believe it or not, but really listen to the words. You were very close with losing hope, but even moreso I think its the push and pull of confidence, vulnerability, doubt, sadness, elation, and disappointment. Like the song, unrequited love is an enigma 😘😘
One of the best reaction channels on UA-cam. Really appreciate your wit and ability to find the meaning behind the lyrics. Really really appreciate that you take the time to even think about what you’re listening to and not just dancing along n calling it a banger without any inflection or depth.
So...R.E.M. Losin my religion. When this song came out i instantly connected to it n thought i found the perfect song that fit everything i was going thru. As it got popular i began hearing so many diff takes on what ppl thought they were hearing. Your interpretation is diff than mine. But isnt that what music is supposed to be? Songs poems the written word all mean something diff to each. As for the mistakes you made, God at our birth gives a key to every door we choose to walk thru. Its up to us to decide which door to open. I dont know anyone who hasnt made so bad choices. Dont sweat those. Live for today. Live for you and your children. God will show you your path n when the time is right He will show you the person you are meant to spend your life with. We out here in subscriber-ville love you n your channel. Keep the faith. Be still and know HE is GOD. Great react kiddo
Well India... before I left to make my lunch, I listened to your reaction to Mac Davis and you lit my day! I return after lunch and you've made my day again. Love, love, love this song. Thanks for the review!!! Take care and be well. Peace.
So interesting watching the first reactions from a person to "classic" music that a lot of us just take for granted - and wish we could unhear and hear again for the very first time 🤗 Thank you 😉
OMG India I just discovered you, and I absolutely adore you. Lol. Seriously. I really appreciate how your reactions are GENUINELY EMOTIONAL to the songs. You must be an empath! 😍 thank you for takin the time to make your videos, I appreciate you, n deeply resonate w/ what you are doin on your channel. Sending you love, light, and high vibe energy 🙏🌈💕☀️🥰❣️
I like the various tableaux in the video. The Parthenon of gods, the medieval Christian picture, and the modern secular building their own angel wings.
This is a song about trying to win the attention and affection of someone you like a lot, without opening yourself up to the vulnerability of letting them know, in case they don't feel the same way. You try to protect your feelings but oops you let something slip out. Now how will they react? You could look at it as a shy person having a silly crush that's making them feel crazy, or being secretly gay in the American South in the 1980s and not always knowing if it's even safe to flirt with someone you're attracted to.
“Losing my religion” in the south means losing one’s temper, getting angry, He’s expressing anger at causing his love to cry or anger at not being understood by his love.
India, you are such a honey. I'd like to think that because we are all individuals, so we can interpret songs the way we wish to and this means lots of different interpretations for each song. And our thoughts may also change through time and circumstance. I love your reactions as well as your 'pondering' looks. It's the first time I've watched one of your vids but it won't be the last. Stay safe in these harrowing times. Cheerio India.
I love the conviction in his attempt to find purpose or meaning and its a comforting song knowing others feel pressure of religion or against it. Just good passion. Great react & interpretations!
Expression of loosing his temper and yelling, cussing, cursing the target of his anger. Also the line "Oh no I've said too much..." Song is about his regrets of getting angry and lashing out with verbal abuse, and his denial of his own behavior.
This song came out right at the time I was losing my religion. It was and always has been one of the most profound songs to me. Many days I would just sit and listen to this for hours wondering what I was going to do and how I could find my hope. I lost that battle and have no religion/faith to this day, but the song will still always touch me as a reminder of what I once had, and sometimes miss desperately.
What you said was spot on about the meaning...The fact that the video showed all different gods and prophets and then he was singing, "I THOUGHT THAT I HEARD YOU LAUGHING, I THOUGHT THAT I HEARD YOU SING"... Michael Stipe was referencing both BUDAH (ALWAYS depicted in statues and described in real life as a laughing man, full of joy and peace) and CHRISTIANITY (People sing in churches and praise God)...Michael was singing about the search for something to believe in in this world...how everyone, weather religious or spiritual, scientific based beliefs OR none of the above, ALL search for something in life...How sometimes the different sides of the spectrum you run to for guidence or peace can make it all confusing when there are sooo many ways to search for peace and understanding of self or the world or the deeper meaning to the universe (possibly for him personally or in general)...It seems as though he or talking about people in general, can be at their lowest low and not know what the deeper meaning of self, the world, the universe is...It's a song about searching to understand these things and try to find what in this world brings you to the path of peace...Everyone has their own interpretation, but from listening to the song and seeing the video...this is my take on the song... Also, I'm from the 80's onward MTV generation and when I first saw the video on MTV and even before when I heard the song...it hit me in all the feels...Still does! 😎... Also...I want that shirt! It's rad! 😊🥰🎃✌️🤘🖖🙏🏽☯️ 🕊️ ☮️
"Losing My Religion" is a way of saying you're going crazy. I suppose it was probably said in the South, ie "If you kids don't stop screaming I'm going to lose my religion!", in other words to do or say something that's not very christian-like.
I remember the day that the local radio station played it for the first time. I was awed by it. India you should review more REM. They were such a great American band. Try Nightswimming, Fall on Me, and my favorite, Superman. It isn't written by REM but it is a really good one to me. If you reviewed them already, I'm sorry for not paying attention😀. Take care & stay safe😷
India I am playing some catch up with watching your vids. as you bring back good music and personal memories for many of us, thank you for keeping it real.
Personally this song is very literal for me. I was a believer for a long time but I wasn’t willing to preach hate the way people around me were and it came to a head where I realized that my faith in god had been lost in the hate of the believers I was exposed too. Great reaction, this song is so beautiful.
A lot of powerful symbolism in this video. You have the spilt milk in the beginning which reminds you of the saying "no use crying over spilt milk" or in other words, what is done is done. You have the image of Icarus (the guy who flew too close to the sun and melted his wings). You have the imagery of either a fallen Angel or someone cast out of Heaven. Then there are the guys at the anvil and the guy at the spotlight dressed like a figure from the old Soviet propaganda posters.
Joe Pegel That’s the definition for how we use it here in the south. “Y’all are being so obnoxious you’re about to make me lose my religion.” It’s about anger or frustration, he’s frustrated that he can’t figure out if his love interest is getting the signals he’s sending. It’s one of my all time favorite songs.
Thanks for doin this one. I'll suggest an REM song. Well ok, first, a short little tune called White Tornado. But then, Well I have a few. It's so easy to get greedy. But the one I wanted to suggest is Bang and Blame. One of their medium known songs, but it's so god. "The one I love" is amazing. It's more complex than just being about a healthy relationship. "Drive" is one of the best opening songs a CD could ever ask for. "Everybody Hurts" is one of their biggest hits. "Stand" is just a fun song. "Shiny Happy People" is too. "At my most Beautiful" is wonderful. As good as it would sound with its name. "Daysleeper" is about sleeping during the day. Ok, final song. The video for this one is one of the best music videos I've ever seen, "Imitation of Life". By the way, if you haven't seen the movie "Imitation of life" I would suggest you see them. Both of them, it got remade, but both the original and remake are very old by now. I don't want to spoil the movies, but they are both amazing. I prefer the older one if I'm going to be honest. I don't think the song has anything to do with the movies though. www.imdb.com/title/tt0025301/ www.imdb.com/title/tt0052918/ Ok, posting this massive comment, about to go suggest some George Michael songs now.
REM is a Rock band based in Athens, Georgia (The B-52s are based there , also). Athens, Georgia is where the University of Georgia is located. REM is a complex band to classify. They have been promoted as an Alternative Rock band, but they have a musical style that sounds more like Folk Rock to me. They have been described as a band with a cutting-edge style, but to me, their sound is very mainstream, and very accessible as a listener. When it comes to making musical playlists, whether as a radio or video program director, or a listener putting together a music mixtape at home, REM is a very easy choice to put on those playlists.
Madchester UK90's take me back..... we smashed it!!! and all go back if we could.. great choice India we had a similar band here called... "James". they blessed the world with a song called "Sit Down" enjoy !!!
The man shot by arrows at the tree is a reference to St. Sebastian. ....He didn't die from the arrows but later was ordered killed by the Emperor Diocletian because he... "Said too much" ...against the emperor's cruel treatment of Christians. He's frequently pictured tied to a tree, full of arrows. Other references to classic paintings throughout the video.
How penetrate his every word in a soul and in a mind For me it's like What's going on here ? That's how i feel some times so to hard to be honest so hard to tell the truth hard to find a way i feel how it's healing listerning this song over and over that's how i feel myself...Oscar
"Saying to much", this is coming from some one who has no close friends and has not been disturbed by social distancing.. revealing my true feelings to my family would open a huge can of Sh!t. Talking about my feelings is a can best left undisturbed and dusty in the hall closet.
This is a great song, and a weird song. Lyrically, I don't think anybody knows what it's about. I think it's actually just a love song about the quixotic and contrasting emotions of being in a young relationship, but it's strangely written filled with bizarre and conflicting imagery both lyrically and in the music video, which was considered one of the most influential of it's time I might add. "Losing My Religion" is just a southern slang, but the way it's performed and portrayed you wonder about the double-meanings of the phrase. Also, Michael Stipe is gay and I believe open about it in 1991, during the heights of the AIDS epidemic, and he's also just an intensely private man, and the band is notoriously private in general as well, so this sense of building and intensity and frustration, and bizarre, angelic and biblical imagery just seems to build and build into a song that gives it's lyrics much more power. One of the best songs of the '90s, even if trying to get a true handle on it's meaning is out of reach.
To me this song isn't about losing your religion literally, but kind of. It's about loving someone selfish so much! They become your religion and you constrain yourself to met their needs. Finally you have to speak up for yourself and you just my have said too much! It's really deep!
The beauty of Mike Stipe's lyrics is that they always had a double meaning, that often connected. This song can be about both losing your faith, and losing your temper (the southern expression), as people often do lose their temper when their faith is challenged. Their song All The Way To Reno, is about both young ambition, how they're 'gonna be a star', but also I've heard Reno has a reputation for where wannabes go to try and make it big, but never do. So it seems sarcastic 'you think you're gonna be a star, sure... all the way to Reno'.
Who else but R.E.M. could pull off a huge hit in the 90's with a mandolin lead.
It was out of the blue and very powerful.
Bruce Hornsby, "Mandolin Rain" from the 80s. The lead is piano and mandolin.
Rod Stewart
The Furey's, The Horslips
@@k_salter yeah i was gonna say what about mandolin wind

AKA Confessing your feeling but pulling back at the last second
Feels like unrequited love too. That's why he "said too much", because he loves this person from afar but the person doesn't see him "in the corner".

Wyram Batista Were you bothered by the “secretly gay in the south in the 80’s” part? Because that’s exactly who Michael Stipe was.

Here is Michael Stipe's explanation of the song's meaning.
storyofsong.com/story/losing-my-religion/
Joe Pegel That’s the definition for how we use it here in the south. “Y’all are being so obnoxious you’re about to make me lose my religion.” It’s about anger or frustration, he’s frustrated that he can’t figure out if his love interest is getting the signals he’s sending. It’s one of my all time favorite songs.
Thanks for posting that.
Beautiful song by Rem
😀 India will you listen to “The living years by mike and the mechanics....
That song is one of the most emotional songs ever. I hope she reacts to that
Wow thanks for mentioning that I totally forgot about it
Yes! india
Definitely one of my favorite songs ever. It's on my top 10 at least. :)
Your smile is just beautiful. Great reactions.
"I am Superman" is a great song by REM

I love R..E.M. They are such a great band. From my home state...Ga.
Oh yeah...plz react to R.E.M. Everybody hurts. Powerful powerful song.
Yes honey!!! One of my favorite songs. I love it
REM is a Rock band based in Athens, Georgia (The B-52s are based there , also).
"Bang and Blame" is excellent too. Good work India!
Love your hair....interesting reaction. I really like R E M

This is one of those songs that will still be fresh 20 years from now and beyond.
Madchester UK90's take me back..... we smashed it!!! and all go back if we could.. great choice India we had a similar band here called... "James". they blessed the world with a song called "Sit Down" enjoy !!!
One of my favs
The man shot by arrows at the tree is a reference to St. Sebastian. ....He didn't die from the arrows but later was ordered killed by the Emperor Diocletian because he... "Said too much" ...against the emperor's cruel treatment of Christians. He's frequently pictured tied to a tree, full of arrows. Other references to classic paintings throughout the video.
Some videos are NOT the original.
They have been spiked with visuals.
Such a great song how the hell didn't it make #1 still baffles me
Amazing song! Deeper meaning , feel me full of emotions
Great choice. A unique group. Man on the Moon is another one you might enjoy by them.
Great song, love this musical video. It never gets old. They have other great hits such as: Orange Crush, Everybody Hurts, The One I Love.
Michael Stipe always bears his soul out..yay 90's? I just hurrahed the 80's..
the backround characters are a re-creation of a famous painting ….this song was made even more famous by Beverly Hills 90210 ….
One of the all time great songs!
How penetrate his every word in a soul and in a mind For me it's like What's going on here ? That's how i feel some times so to hard to be honest so hard to tell the truth hard to find a way i feel how it's healing listerning this song over and over that's how i feel myself...Oscar
I never thought of this song as having anything to do with religion, just the word in the name...🤷🏽♀️
One of my favorite songs ever 👍
India thank you! I think you Will love ,R.E.M. orange crunch ❤️👍😃🌼✌️
Another band I got interested in the spring of 1988--I really like Oddfellows Local 151, Boxcars Lower, Wolves, The Auctioneer and Old Man Kensy.
"Saying to much", this is coming from some one who has no close friends and has not been disturbed by social distancing.. revealing my true feelings to my family would open a huge can of Sh!t. Talking about my feelings is a can best left undisturbed and dusty in the hall closet.
Need to check out some B52s... Love Shack. Ull love it!!
"Night Swimming" my fave REM song, it's poetry!
The opening shot of the video is an homage to The Sacrifice (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1986), one of the greatest films ever made about a crisis of faith.
Saw them on their Monster Tour. Incredible show!
One of my fave songs ever.
Remembered every word. Thanks for the flashback.
Love this song, one of the best ever written.
