Michae Stipe said the song is about being in love with someone but not being able to tell them, and worrying that you will let your feelings slip out. 'Hint of the century' 'Oh no I've said too much'.

This song is about unrequited love. Once you have that in mind, listen to it again and it makes completes sense.
I also used to listen to this song when I was a kid and never really analyzed the lyrics and picked it back up again when I was an adult, and I love this song now.
By the way, I love the videos, Asia and BJ.

"Losing my Religion" would be much more of a signature song than "Everybody Hurts". So would "It's the End of the World As We Know It". Or "Stand". Or "Radio Free Europe" or "This One Goes Out To the One I Love" (which was their mainstream breakout song). They're all good songs though.

R.E.M. were one of the few bands to successfully maintain their independence and guided their career largely as they wanted to. They made very few concessions to or compromises with record companies or management agencies. I think they were able to do this because, along the way, they found people who could help them who were genuine fans, and bigger financial interests realized that if you pushed these guys, they would have no hesitation about just making records in somebody's garage studio and playing college hangouts and dive bars in front of 20 people for the rest of their lives...

For me I discovered this song about late 2005 right after high school was introduced to it by a girl who I had been crazy in love with since middle school but was stuck in the friend zone and the lyrics of this song are so spot on for anybody who has ever been in that situation saying that's me in the corner being the person who's in the corner who's not seen you're not seen by the person that you're in love with. That's me in the spotlight Losing My Religion going absolutely crazy trying to get noticed wanting to be in the spotlight of this person's eye. Consider this the hint of the century you know trying to express yourself to this person without just opening up and pouring your heart out because you're afraid that you will lose what you have with them every whisper, you love to hear their voice every waking hour they're on your mind you are choosing your confessions you go over and over in your mind different ways you could just open up and pour it out and confess your love to someone. The line oh no I think I said too much you're afraid of saying too much and scaring this person away but you haven't said enough you haven't just come clean and told them how you feel

This is not about fame, it’s about unrequited love. It represents the feeling of a love slipping away because the other person is losing interest. The title ‘Losing My Religion’ has a double meaning - both the feeling of losing your composure and viewing your love of someone and the relationship as a religion. You got too focused on the word ‘spotlight’, he meant it as ‘nowhere to hide’ like he’s unable to co trip the actions and words that just push the other person away.

It sounded so damn good, it really did, i couldn't help but turn it up pretending i was playing the drums. Some older black guy that i didn't notice was looking over at me and nodded up and down like in approval. I wonder if he thought this was a song that i was in the band and playing with them, just the vibe of how he was looking at me and look of approval he gave, gave me that thought. I was in my brother's real big F150 so might thought i had little success in something in life. The guy looked like he had a successful life, he could of been one of the doctors there.

Interesting side peace. They were mentors and friends to radiohead when they were coming up. Thom Yorke of radiohead became good friends and really looked at REM as inspiration. Even watch Thom dance and this lead singer and see what I mean. Very abstract types of dance😄

No I think what REM is singing about and specially lead singer is basically isn't religious and isn't going to be dictated to by the church that's why in the Line he is saying he will choose his confessions and not the church

Hey ms Asia and Sir BJ, I'm just discovering your channel and I subscribed, very nice. I love REM, I remember seeing this as a younger person, I'm much older than you both and remember hearing this and thinking how much it felt like it spoke to my young spirit, if you haven't already react to Simply Red - I'll keep holding on, Annie Lennox / The Eurythmics- Here Comes the Rain, anything from Cameo.. Be Blessed and Asia what a beautiful talent you are.

Michael Stipe has a very unique voice, id guess its inspired by James Taylor... His dance is consistent though.. Its just as unique.

In Georgia, "Losing My Religion" has nothing to do with actual religion, "Losing My Religion" is about doing everything humanly possible to not whoop someone's ass and or check somebody.

In a way, we all have different roles at different times. For example, I put forward a different front when I'm being an uncle to my nieces and nephews versus how I would be with friends at the bar versus at a family function. They are all facets of who we are. Which brings up a great song to check out, "The Stranger" by Billy Joel. It also has one of the epic whistling parts of all time.

I heard that Michael Stipe used to finish singing on stage and make a run for it so he didn't have to be interviewed because he was painfully shy. This song seems to encapsulate all of his insecurities. 'And I don't know if I can do it' is something we all feel at times.

fyi for your viewers not from the south - it's a phrase that's like the end of your rope - you've had it. I've realized a lot of people not from the south think it's actually about religion. For this song, he's talking about a crush

Michael Stipe asked me to watch his twister mat while he went into a club in Athens, GA--bizarre but memorable moment! He sat down next to my wife at his restaurant there, and she had to summon all her will not to 'lose her religion' right there...
