good covers take imagination to make you think of a song you've heard a million times over and hear it and therefore see it differently...I love Patti she did this song brilliantly and breathed new meaning into it.
what struck me when i first heard Patti's version was the incredible lyric-in my mind this was the greatest lyric ever written-not so clearly evident in Kurt's version- the song written by a sensitive young man with a deep feeling for the spiritual importance of the libido-which is then debased by a corporate order-its Blakean-that's why Patti can hit on it
I think a lot of people are forgetting the meaning behind covering a classic. You see, it's left our purview of what it's "supposed to be." When you cover a song like this it's not about image, it's not about style, hell it's not even about being hip. It's about revival, and honor and tribute. This was a performance onto which Mrs. Patti Smith felt she did Cobain justice. This is her way of showing her "thanks", if you will. And I think it's a damn good version on top of it all.
The stronger the media grows, the deeper good music burrows. You just have to find it. Trust me, the Internet has made it possible for all to witness good art, just dig deep!
Just have to say that I've been a fan of Patti since the 70s, she's raw, earthy and always adds her mark & special flair to the the songs she sings! She's undoubtably a very sexy and totally charismatic performer who always makes every performance special! I"d love to spend some time with her👍She always keeps it real 😘
Anyone who really understands and feels Nirvana's music will appreciate this cover. She is not trying to emulate Kurt, she sings in her own way but the feeling of the song is totally conserved.
@JazzmineMartinez I am glad that you wrote this. It will prevent me form reading others ignorant comments. I think that Patti is amongst the most pure and beautiful creatures on this planet. I would not like to spend many a precious moments of my life amongst people who could not appreciate a soul as radiant as hers. And besides that point, she is wicked hot.
wow!!!!!she is the one that does"Because the Night..."!!!!!!!!i love that song...i love her later version to!!!!!you learn something every day...thanks pseudonym1964 now i have a new song to add to my fav's
@24241Nellie -- I completely agree with you Nellie... she is beatiful, in all the ways we can look at her... and she is great. She is like a new mother for me, her art touches my solu in so many ways...
This is how a cover is supposed to be done. Completely reinvented. Kurt Cobain was hugely influenced by Patti's music her poetry and her politics, which makes this cover even more beautiful and meaningful. I only wish he could have heard it. Kurt would have been so pleased to hear the Goddess of punk rock, a poetic genius, the legendary Patti Smith singing one of his songs, relating to one of his songs. A classic case of the teacher becoming the student. This just makes me smile.
@JazzmineMartinez goes to show you that todays youth seem more concerned with image than the value of a song and the power it can posess. i'm 28 and patti smith was way before my time, but i learned about her and her music growing up from my parents. its a great cover with a strong message.
Eyyy, I was there! Probably one of the best covers of Nirvana, and I think Kurt would be psyched in knowing Patti not only did a tribute song, but covered him as well.
That song is just mind blowing, i heared it in bar few days ago, never heard of her before. Shame that some incredible songs like that are unknown to the large public
wow, the amount of people commenting here who claim to be massive Nirvana fans but dont have a clue who patti smith is completely baffles me. do kids not want to know anything about music anymore? anyway, brilliant, origional cover (thats the point kids, she's not *ment* to be Kurt) the ending absolutely rocked. I adore the passion that woman has.
@drivebyfluffer Thank you for saying the truth. Patti has stood the test of time, and just keeps growing in stature. Dream of life album didn't get much noticed, but it has truly great songs and soul.
@bevmacisaac thanks for telling me this. I had some difficulties with my account and now I signed in I was surprises about all the support of people. It feels good to see that there are at least some thinking and feeling people in the world :))

It takes a stature and experience of a pro like her to do justice to amazing song. loved it.
Patti just shows us what is like to do a cover with respect.
I was at all 3 shows that night - UNBELIEVABLE!! She is a true American artist in every way...
I dare anyone to show me a more magnificent artist today.
I hope I have this energy and power when I'm 60
this sent tingles down my spine
The stronger the media grows, the deeper good music burrows. You just have to find it. Trust me, the Internet has made it possible for all to witness good art, just dig deep!

This is just an awesom performance and the best cover of this magnificent song. I wish i was there...
I saw her when she was young, wasted, and wild. Rocked the house.
Patti Smith Is Always Amazing...her poetic expression, no appropriate definition...her lyric manner moves me far beyond words.

@24241Nellie -- I completely agree with you Nellie... she is beatiful, in all the ways we can look at her... and she is great. She is like a new mother for me, her art touches my solu in so many ways...

She is beautiful in every aspect
the world could have done without this.
Just a great woman, songwriter and singer...

I just love patti smith

ignorante, she doesn't need to be another kurt. She IS Patty Smith and that's more than enough!!!
Eyyy, I was there! Probably one of the best covers of Nirvana, and I think Kurt would be psyched in knowing Patti not only did a tribute song, but covered him as well.
She is so talented, I love her.
This is a very sweet version of this song! She's still got it!
Groovy. Best cover of this song out there. Period.
when she was younger she was attractive and she is quite the artist two....love her spin on this song
I was also never into her music. I somehow missed her...I just finished reading Just Kids and enjoyed it very much..
Really, it is the best cover I ever heard of this song. And I usually hate cover songs.
That song is just mind blowing, i heared it in bar few days ago, never heard of her before. Shame that some incredible songs like that are unknown to the large public
awesome!this is the best cover of this song!
Patti Smith rocks this song, I love Patti!!
The Poet Laureate of Punk strikes again! Will there ever be a more stately, angry, intelligent and brilliant rockstar, than the glorious Patti
Bloody amazing. Patti Smith is the Holy Mother of God of Rock 'n' Roll
This is amazing!!!!
A sly re-working of a great song by a great performer. Patti Smith is the Queen of Punk.

The song is perfect for her.
The best version!
My fav Version 🥰😎
there should be more P.Smith in the world..!
Amazing (the CD version, too!). She's done to this song what she did with "Gloria" - made it a Patti Smith "original." Patti rules the soulworld.
A melhor versão dessa música que eu já ouviiii!!!
I LOVE PATTI SMITH!
she is my spirit animal.
Both versions are great but I like a lot
A good cover. She is the only one who can make it. They both are poets, she and Kurt.
Man this is so good, she's truly amazing.
love it or hate it,it certainly creates a debate. personally i love it,and the original.
fortunately, this songs demonstrates that Patti's a genius in every gender she plays.
legend in history! thanks so much
patti is a fucking insane genius!!!!! I love when she took her jacket off at the beginning LOL
but in fact.... i've listen to it several times and i love this version now...
Wild and raw--she's made this song her own!
wow, the amount of people commenting here who claim to be massive Nirvana fans but dont have a clue who patti smith is completely baffles me. do kids not want to know anything about music anymore? anyway, brilliant, origional cover (thats the point kids, she's not *ment* to be Kurt) the ending absolutely rocked. @drivebyfluffer Thank you for saying the truth. Patti has stood the test of time, and just keeps growing in stature. Dream of life album didn't get much noticed, but it has truly great songs and soul.
This is awesome. I love Patti Smith. Still think the original is the best, but you can't deny this version is great too.
old granny ROCKS!!!!!
the best..........patti rules
Patti Smiths is a beautiful, iconic artist and Nirvana is the best band since Nirvana so it's so fittingly perfect this cover.
She's so fuckin awesome. Patti can cover just about any song and make it her own.
@bevmacisaac thanks for telling me this. I had some difficulties with my account and now I signed in I was surprises about all the support of people. It feels good to see that there are at least some thinking and feeling people in the world :))
This performance is th best performance ever like wow so tense
She should have sung the album version this way... but I guess that's why live music will always be king. Genius.
she's great
That accordion is amazing.
