  • Line 22 is the only bus route that runs 24 hours a day in Silicon Valley. At night, homeless people have made it their informal shelter in an effort to avoid sleeping on the street. This situation is in stark contrast with the image filmmaker Elizabeth Lo had of Silicon Valley, which is why, in the course of a week, she joined them on the bus line. "Hotel 22" is a poignant Op-Doc video that captures a crude reality of homelessness that may have gone unseen.

Us folks with a roof above our heads and a soft mattress waiting for us at night complain about our homes not being comfortable enough while these poor people have to pay a bus fare for a safe place to lay their heads. And the fact that we spend more money on the Military then every single country combined adding all the money the rest of the world spends on the military we spend more then the entire world

In my hometown of Oakland, California the city buses are as full at night as they are during the day with people with no place to go. It's safer on the bus to sleep than out on the streets exposed to the elements and surrounded by predators. I live in Afrika. Kenya to be specific. I've known poverty. We have people living in the streets, some in villages die of hunger during the very rough drought seasons in areas like Turkana. Food aid is sent during those times. we are never proud of the help from the west. Have you ever spent money that is not yours? There is no pride in that. But you cant refuse help when you really need it. During good weather, there is plenty for the cattle and people to live on though.
This video has made me thank God even more for the little I have. May the homeless find his salvation too. My only problem is with them being homeless in America. You see, the America I knew growing up was a very programmed one. My first encounter with America was through The Matrix movie. The fascination was with the cars, the cleanliness of the city and the general futuristic look of the whole "new world". To me, it was entertainment, i dint understand English. I have watched the movies severally ever since and now, i have a better understanding of the movie because i can understand English. I must mention too that it was my first time to watch motion picture as it was shown in a village square with a local cinema van (Factual Film Ltd) that had brought free mosquito nets. We were seated down on the dust. So you get how America was fascinating? Of course I watched other fascinating movies and i admired the west more and more.
To me, being homeless in Amerika makes me think of one Forbes interview where Warren Buffett and Jay-Z were talking on the power of luck and Warren Said something what sort of sounded to me like "he was lucky being born a white male in the 30s as blacks and women didn't have the same opportunities they have now." From that statement, i deduce my comment to the poor and homeless in Amerika "You are lucky to be born in Amerika where child mortality rate, unemployment, disease, poverty and death rates are significantly lower than the rest of the world. With all due respect, people there should do better. We know every society has its curse and poverty is not Amerika's.
The point is, based on the assumption that Amerika is great, video's like these seem like a bad dream of "Afrika" in future. In other words, never had i ever imagine Amerika could be this dissolute.(Even though there are many good things there) I sincerely appreciate Kenya and Afrika as a whole for offering me a life less hostile, not as hard as that of sleeping in a bus in a city with millions of million dollar millionaires. I thank the almighty God and my ancestors spirits that however simple and primitive looking, most Kenyan's have a place they call "Ushago", your village home away from the city where should things get out of hand, you can always rush to and still be received with open arms even for a few days before you become a bother, because sometimes, that's all that a human being needs. Even better, most Afrikans have been and are increasingly being blessed with better quality of life and comfort: descent houses, wives, healthy children, family and social structures that still function. That's why i can comment on a youtube video while herding goats.
Lastly, I thank UA-cam and National Geographic for making me see clearly! Greetings to brothers and sisters in "Diaspora"
    Disclaimer!
I welcome contrary and agreeable comments
Your interpretation of the intent of the comment is excusable based on where you come from

Breaks my heart. There needs to be services to rehabilitate these people. It's so easy to lose everything. It could be me someday.... :-/ to those saying they have no sympathy for people who are homeless and could be working.....I went to college work full time and my dad still has to pay for my health insurance and car insurance and phone bill AND he is the one who sent me to college, I couldn't have afforded it without him. If someone who has gone to college and is working full time still can't afford basic necessities there's something wrong with america.

It's Silicon Valley, nobody can afford to live there even when they have jobs in the tech sector. These people need transportation to middle america where the cost of living is far cheaper. I don't know their situations, but it might be easier for them to get jobs and more help in the states with the lowest unemployment rates. All of California's resources are going to support illegals, and the state is struggling financially. It's better to change locations.

This was a great video whose topics need the resolve that will benefit the homeless. You, humanity, do not understand that all of you are homeless. You do not own the homes you live in, land you reside upon, things you have, etc., and, when the malevolents, who have taken over these worlds, etc. decide they don't want you in your homes, etc. you'll be in worse shape than the homeless you've been looking down on, ignoring, and treating horribly for the past illions of years, throughout your various incarnations. National Geographic, and the maker of this video, you are a step, in the right direction, that everyone should be following. I am an expert in the field of the needs of the homeless, so I must say what is needed are bathtubs, washers and dryers, refrigerator freezers, stoves, full solar power, as priority to the usual systems, amphibious, and a myriad of other features and services. Homeless people need these in buses that should be converted, then given to them, along with large areas to park in, that are near necessity stores, location independent incomes, etc.. Thank you for creating, and sharing, this video, your contributions to a lifestyle which should always have been, for everyone, for love, peace, understanding, unity, etc., and, if you ever run across anyone giving away equipment, such as, but not limited to, solar, batteries, water heaters, jacuzzis, bath tubs, washing machines, etc., motorhomes, property, any craft, be they amphibious, aerial, terraneal, spacial, subterraneal, etc., that can be converted into motorhomes, etc. please let us know, because we can use as much as we can get. We are attempting to save the omniverses, as well as existence, so we have to acquire as large of fundings, budgets, etc. as possible, and, within those restrictions, have as many motorhome command centers, properties, equipments, supplies, etc. as possible, from which to function, with which to successfully do our works, etc..

That's exactly my thoughts. I think only really important inventions and such should make a person get that much income. Otherwise I don't like the uncontrollable amount of money people can get. It's really greedy for one person to have so so much.

Irene Miller Right, we should put really high tax on rich people. When you reach a certain point, its way more than enough... I'm sure Bill gates would still live a very comfortable life with 7 billion or 700 million dollars. In Manhattan there are penthouse selling for close to 100 million dollars, and right under them are homeless people struggling with life.

So when a rich person reaches the "enough" limit - then they will become a government slave? Why not close up shop? If the government will take 100% of my earnings? You might as well take over the company and let the state run it.

ARVIN it's ok to have that much if he earned it. I think he absolutely ought to be doing something to help with the large homeless population in this country but nobody is going to put a cap on my earnings.

A very sad situation. Better warm and safe on the bus.
