- Line 22 is the only bus route that runs 24 hours a day in Silicon Valley. At night, homeless people have made it their informal shelter in an effort to avoid sleeping on the street. This situation is in stark contrast with the image filmmaker Elizabeth Lo had of Silicon Valley, which is why, in the course of a week, she joined them on the bus line. "Hotel 22" is a poignant Op-Doc video that captures a crude reality of homelessness that may have gone unseen.

It's a cruel human-world when prisoners have more resources and satisfaction than the homeless and sick.
That is so true
not trying to sound rude or dumb but what do you mean satisfaction?
Try spend a month in a federal prison see how that will work out for you buddy

They have more privileges than others like homeless people. Wow you killed someone here's a nice warm bed and a plate of food, feeling sick go check the nurse and get medicated. Not to forget those who have links inside can get way more
I'd rather be free and homeless than a prisoner.
Just when you think your life is bad 🙏 May We Always count our Blessings!!💖💖🙏
God Bless these people. We never know what could happen in our lives
@Elon Musk Amen🙏
Us folks with a roof above our heads and a soft mattress waiting for us at night complain about our homes not being comfortable enough while these poor people have to pay a bus fare for a safe place to lay their heads. My rant sounds cliche but I was just reminded I don't have much to complain about.

I am living in a studio apartment I got a bed tv ps4 laptop food this is living like a king to me. The streets are no place to be for any one I was on the for five years and I am young only 26 but these people can barely walk and there elderly I don't understand the U.S we really aren't that great of a country we are one the riches Countries in the world and the we have in America for every 1 homeless person there are 15 vacant houses but we don't let them live in them just because they don't have the money we could take one house like a 4 bedroom and put 8 people in it that's better then living outside. And the fact that we spend more money on the Military then every single country combined adding all the money the rest of the world spends on the military we spend more then the entire world
I'm literally speechless. That's what a person with a camera and vision can do. And the story told here is true in my country, India, too. I guess THIS truth is universal.
@Sudip Chatterjee
I'm sure this is true in every country, it's disturbing and depressing.
What an amazing short film documentary. Not a single word said by a narrarator. You let the silence, the visuals tell an amazing story. That was wow.
living in new york I've heard a lot of stories about the bad treatment they receive at the homeless shelter, which is why most of them prefer to sleep on the train and busses..
How bout the bad treatment they received as birth you numb-nut! Birthing new born babies in poverty by dysfunctional breeders is the REAL problem. Blaming never enough tax payer money to 'fix' it as a solution is the REAL problem. You want a solution? Prosecute birthers for child abuse, tie tubes and lock them up. Prosecute sperm donors for child abuse, casrate them and lock them up. . . . . PROBLEM SOLVED.....any questions?
I'd be OK with that but my taxes go towards paying what it takes to fund public school education ($3,000.00 per child per year). For the ones that pop them out in poverty for tax credits...is what I have a problem with

In my hometown of Oakland, California the city buses are as full at night as they are during the day with people with no place to go. It's safer on the bus to sleep than out on the streets exposed to the elements and surrounded by predators. Many of the homeless have family but have burned down bridges with loved ones due to their drug addictions and mental problems . Very sad.
Blindianswirl Two very well said. I am also a bay area native.
Blindianswirl Two mostly drug addiction which causes the mental illness.
Thx facts
I too live in Oakland and it’s sad I wish I had money I would build a homeless shelter we need one especially in east Oakland there’s so many tents under the bart on east 14 and by San Leandro blvd we need to end this homeless epidemic

This is why real estate speculation "gurus" like Dean Graziosi and useless gas bags like Tony Robbins need to be physically tortured (preferably via enforced 24/7 sleep deprivation while standing nonstop on bare concrete outdoors in the elements) until they WANT TO "off themselves"!
As someone who lives in nyc and has friends who were/are homeless. this is heartbreaking. i just can't understand why people are being so cruel as to dismiss people who are homeless.
admittedly i do see homeless folk who I'm sure are there for drug reasons. However the fact is, this is an issue and in one of the most richest countries, people shouldn't be homeless. 😳

This breaks my heart. This puts things into perspective in a BIG way. We all need to judge a little less and love and help a little more. We are all people with different lives and struggles. Some more than others. Who are we to tell anyone how they should live their life when we don’t LIVE it?

A blessing to all who reach out to others. These videos show that the wealthy who hoard their money are nothing compared to those who share their hearts. I have lost everything and rebuilt due to illness and those with love kept my spirit alive. Belongings can be replaced. Goodness cannot.

Amen Sister, we may be different races, ethnicities, cultures and religions but we are all Human and we all can and should show love, no matter what the difference.
I cannot imagine not having a place to lay my head. God bless the drivers. Keep everyone safe.
I live in Afrika. Kenya to be specific. I've known poverty. We have people living in the streets, some in villages die of hunger during the very rough drought seasons in areas like Turkana. Food aid is sent during those times. we are never proud of the help from the west. Have you ever spent money that is not yours? There is no pride in that. But you cant refuse help when you really need it. During good weather, there is plenty for the cattle and people to live on though.
This video has made me thank God even more for the little I have. May the homeless find his salvation too. My only problem is with them being homeless in America. You see, the America I knew growing up was a very programmed one. My first encounter with America was through The Matrix movie. The fascination was with the cars, the cleanliness of the city and the general futuristic look of the whole "new world". To me, it was entertainment, i dint understand English. I have watched the movies severally ever since and now, i have a better understanding of the movie because i can understand English. I must mention too that it was my first time to watch motion picture as it was shown in a village square with a local cinema van (Factual Film Ltd) that had brought free mosquito nets. We were seated down on the dust. So you get how America was fascinating? Of course I watched other fascinating movies and i admired the west more and more.
To me, being homeless in Amerika makes me think of one Forbes interview where Warren Buffett and Jay-Z were talking on the power of luck and Warren Said something what sort of sounded to me like "he was lucky being born a white male in the 30s as blacks and women didn't have the same opportunities they have now." From that statement, i deduce my comment to the poor and homeless in Amerika "You are lucky to be born in Amerika where child mortality rate, unemployment, disease, poverty and death rates are significantly lower than the rest of the world. With all due respect, people there should do better. We know every society has its curse and poverty is not Amerika's.
The point is, based on the assumption that Amerika is great, video's like these seem like a bad dream of "Afrika" in future. In other words, never had i ever imagine Amerika could be this dissolute.(Even though there are many good things there) I sincerely appreciate Kenya and Afrika as a whole for offering me a life less hostile, not as hard as that of sleeping in a bus in a city with millions of million dollar millionaires. I thank the almighty God and my ancestors spirits that however simple and primitive looking, most Kenyan's have a place they call "Ushago", your village home away from the city where should things get out of hand, you can always rush to and still be received with open arms even for a few days before you become a bother, because sometimes, that's all that a human being needs. Even better, most Afrikans have been and are increasingly being blessed with better quality of life and comfort: descent houses, wives, healthy children, family and social structures that still function. That's why i can comment on a youtube video while herding goats.
Lastly, I thank UA-cam and National Geographic for making me see clearly! Greetings to brothers and sisters in "Diaspora"

I welcome contrary and agreeable comments
Your interpretation of the intent of the comment is excusable based on where you come from
Forgive my grammar. I speak five and write three other Afrikan languages well though.
Beautiful and inspiring view of life from a different perspective. Thank you for your words.
Why is ok for Africans to judge Americans, but the reverse is disrespectful and considered racist? I’m an African American & it feels like people from Africa are constantly preaching to us. You have NO idea what it’s like having grown up in America. You have no clue that most don’t have family homes to turn to. Be grateful without preaching.
Peace be with you.
This is becuasee when u continously promote your country as the greatest in the world, the "freest" and the proudest being promoted in all forms of media, it should not be a surprise when countries that are "less developed" as westeners may call it, question the oh so great america and its people having no care and sympathy for thier own. why is it okay for america to label countries as less developed or deveolpin when in its own streets there are people starving and dying?
Toronto Mans I directed my comments to the original post. Is Toronto in Africa now?

it sad that there are still people who doesn't sympathy for the homeless one
the same shit needs to happen to those people for them to understand
its difficult for homeless people to get jobs though :/
It's hard for them to get jobs, they have nowhere for them to be contacted, they need nice clean clothes, they have to smell nice. It's hard.
+NYC Trey They dont have minimum education. Lets say they do,since they are homeless they have no credentials. So any simple job wont be accepting anytime soon.

Wow this blew me away at the end because I realized this is the VTA which is the public transportation here in my hometown San Jose
To bad its more people like that one guy verbally assaulting the defenseless homeless (at the back of the bus) out there in the world, not caring, and blaming the victims. Coward. A little empathy goes a long way. I know, I have been there. Salute!!!
When all you need is only a short nap ,nothing else ! All my support for them all ,🎉🎉🎉
Breaks my heart. There needs to be services to rehabilitate these people. It's so easy to lose everything. It could be me someday.... :-/ to those saying they have no sympathy for people who are homeless and could be working.....I went to college work full time and my dad still has to pay for my health insurance and car insurance and phone bill AND he is the one who sent me to college, I couldn't have afforded it without him. If someone who has gone to college and is working full time still can't afford basic necessities there's something wrong with america.
This a mental health crisis. It would make anybody crazy.
Tell them Chiara! especially your sentence about basic necessities
Funny how those who complain about not being able to afford things are the ones with $500 smartphones and drive cars with $500 monthly payments. No kidding you can't afford to live.
This is my worst nightmare. How many of us are just one step away from being homeless?? Appreciate what you have and be kind to those who have nothing. It seems like there is no compassion from anyone these days.
This is sad. I'm so sorry people have to go through this. I wish there were enough shelters, resources and programs available so that people could actually do better and save money to get back on their feet.
God please help homeless people everywhere. Amen.

At least you admit it. I hope you become grateful truly
I remember these harsh times. My mom and my 2 sisters and I stayed at shelters and once stayed in a park in a snow day. I’m glad and grateful I’m not there anymore .
In the mid 2000s when gas prices where the highest, I started taking the the bus to travel the six miles to work. I did it for 8 years. I miss the sounds of the bus.

It's Silicon Valley, nobody can afford to live there even when they have jobs in the tech sector. These people need transportation to middle america where the cost of living is far cheaper. I don't know their situations, but it might be easier for them to get jobs and more help in the states with the lowest unemployment rates. All of California's resources are going to support illegals, and the state is struggling financially. It's better to change locations.
You can, by just helping one homeless person...little things make a big difference...if you cant do that, just give food, clothing, shoes, hot coffee or money..whatever you can give they will appreciate.God bless.
all humans have a right to shelter and basic standards of living. and no not everyone will be able to provide it for themselves. there needs to be a system of basic minimum living resources given to each citizen. similar to the Scandinavian one.

simple, because it's not our legal or moral responsibility.
Humans almost always view people as either part of "us", or against us. Some people are polite and charitable to anyone in need while others chide them and disregard their plight. It's an inhumane but natural reaction. I just wish it wasn't the norm

So sad, such a hard life to live
I only have sympathies over those who are not capable to working.
So you think the others like being like that without money and all?
The problem is that few legal businesses aren't willing to hire homeless people due to stigma associated with being homeless, so once you become homeless its hard to earn money even if you are "capable" unless you are willing to work in the black market.
BuckGreywolfe You're literally disagreeing with every single human being in the comment section here, fucking chill.

This was a great video whose topics need the resolve that will benefit the homeless. You, humanity, do not understand that all of you are homeless. You do not own the homes you live in, land you reside upon, things you have, etc., and, when the malevolents, who have taken over these worlds, etc. decide they don't want you in your homes, etc. you'll be in worse shape than the homeless you've been looking down on, ignoring, and treating horribly for the past illions of years, throughout your various incarnations. National Geographic, and the maker of this video, you are a step, in the right direction, that everyone should be following. I am an expert in the field of the needs of the homeless, so I must say what is needed are bathtubs, washers and dryers, refrigerator freezers, stoves, full solar power, as priority to the usual systems, amphibious, and a myriad of other features and services. Homeless people need these in buses that should be converted, then given to them, along with large areas to park in, that are near necessity stores, location independent incomes, etc.. Thank you for creating, and sharing, this video, your contributions to a lifestyle which should always have been, for everyone, for love, peace, understanding, unity, etc., and, if you ever run across anyone giving away equipment, such as, but not limited to, solar, batteries, water heaters, jacuzzis, bath tubs, washing machines, etc., motorhomes, property, any craft, be they amphibious, aerial, terraneal, spacial, subterraneal, etc., that can be converted into motorhomes, etc. please let us know, because we can use as much as we can get. We are attempting to save the omniverses, as well as existence, so we have to acquire as large of fundings, budgets, etc. as possible, and, within those restrictions, have as many motorhome command centers, properties, equipments, supplies, etc. as possible, from which to function, with which to successfully do our works, etc..

Do these homeless people know where they are when asked to leave in the dark early morn? I'm not sure I could get a good night's rest while sleeping upright on a moving bus, enduring harassers who verbally bash me or someone else who's down on his luck. What do these individuals look forward to at the start of each new day? I wish they were given a hot cup of coffee! Thank you for the insights.
During the day in some areas it's the library
Makes me sad and really sad for the elderly and disabled
who is cry ? please say not just me.
zahid ITB MeToo.I cry also.GodBlessYou.
Zahid, not just you. Me too.
Who is crying
Nobody perfect..poor heart is everywhere
Thats crazy that they would kick out the homeless instead of letting them stay in a warm place. Where have we come as a country where prisoners have better living conditions than our most vulnerable....
this is so sad.. i don't feel sad for the young homeless but for the old men and women how is so tired and sick.. thank God for the good life and health .. i hope if there any way that we do to stops humans suffer and misery.. so sad
Why not the young?
One man has over 79 billion dollars, and he's just one of over 500 billionaires in America with combined wealth over 2 trillion dollars. Then there's also millions of millionaires in America. Why exactly is it okay for someone to have over 79 billion dollars? This is America in 2016, and we're still dealing with homelessness?
That's exactly my thoughts. I think only really important inventions and such should make a person get that much income. Otherwise I don't like the uncontrollable amount of money people can get. It's really greedy for one person to have so so much.
Captalism
Irene Miller Right, we should put really high tax on rich people. When you reach a certain point, its way more than enough... I'm sure Bill gates would still live a very comfortable life with 7 billion or 700 million dollars. In Manhattan there are penthouse selling for close to 100 million dollars, and right under them are homeless people struggling with life.
So when a rich person reaches the "enough" limit - then they will become a government slave? Why not close up shop? If the government will take 100% of my earnings? You might as well take over the company and let the state run it.
ARVIN it's ok to have that much if he earned it. I think he absolutely ought to be doing something to help with the large homeless population in this country but nobody is going to put a cap on my earnings.
A very sad situation. Better warm and safe on the bus.
