- Learn how to change your rear differential fluid. In this process I unbolt the differential cover (pumpkin cover) because there is no drain plug. Then I make my own gasket with RTV because I couldnt get a gasket for this differential. Only basic tools are needed and anyone could do this job. Remember to "thumbs up" the video if you found it helpful and leave a question/comment below. This is fast and easy maintenance to do to keep your car or truck in tip-top shape.

My new video covers how to do an oil change, transmission fluid change, coolant flush, power steering fluid flush, brake fluid flush and bleed, differential fluid change, transfer case fluid change, grease the suspension, and finally add washer fluid properly!
Can you do a video on automatic transmissions? For example replace seals or torque conveters? Either way, I appreciate the content its very helpful!
I love your videos! I'm an older wrench turner (60) but I have learned so much from them!
Thank you ChrisFix!
You are my #1 You Tube Channel!!!!
Two Thumbs Up!

Engine light off. Later in the day it came back on. Have any clues.
Hey Chris! I know this is kind of an old video but I have a bit of feedback for you so we're all getting better. I worked at the Air Force PMEL for a few years where I learned to calibrate torque wrenches amongst other things. Anyways, you want to always apply force at the center of the handle (there's usually a mark) since torque value is dependent on the force over distance formula to calculate exact torque. Not to mention avoid cosine error (anything other than 90 degrees from the torque end). Hope that helps if you haven't started doing that already, keep doing what you do!
This is officially the first video where he says 'hey guys, Chris fix here" previous videos were a bit different. You're welcome
Underrated comment (if it's true, lol)
It's true. well done sir. I appreciated that information. lol
I was looking through the videos for the same thing😹
It's true.
Give this guy a like! Well done!!
He sounds 15 times more enthousiastic nowadays
He sounds like he is dead inside I'm these old vids
Yeah he’s probably making money now 😁
IKR
It's because it's winter when he was doing this cold changes a man lol
he rich now and he didnt know his old videos will take off like they did but im glad it did cause Chrisfix is a mechanic Hero 💯💯💯💯
You know what I like about your vids Chris, it's that you show the work explaine it and don't pane the camera on yourself. Your all about the project. Why I subscribed and like the vids. Great job buddy. Your my go-to on alot of car stuff
I know what you mean. It annoys me when a car video starts with a full on selfie of the person. Especially when the camera is right in their face.
As a student with huge interests in the insides of cars and how they work, you are by far the best channel on UA-cam, great videos man👍
JinxCollateral he goes into more detail than most people that do these videos
JinxCollateral ikr Man
JinxCollateral true true he make he is the best👍👍😏
this is an old video but a little tip. I worked in auto glass where the windshield glue was very important not to leak and a good tip is to cut a "V" notch into that plastic nozzle. This will make a triangle bead instead of a round lumpy one. when you put the lid on it will compress in such a way that an air bubble or valley can't get caught in-between the lumpy round bumps of a round bead and is a much more reliable seal. at the top of the gasket just continue the bead along side the point where you started, maybe 2-3", then blend them together with the tip of the nozzle or a nylon stick. I'm sure there are videos online how to do this if i'm not creating a good visual.
Thanks man
Awesome tip
Groovy.
No wonder this man has almost 10m subs. This is 9 years old and is just as good as a new video from him. Thanks Chris, a big hug from Mexico City.

Honestly started watching chrisfix videos almost 2 weeks back .. i am hooked have being binge watching videos and got tools for myself to small repair works myself 😊

Chris's videos are absolutely perfect. This guy is a genius. Precise, clear, sensible info that has perfect video, caveats, with stunningly precise video. No one else comes close.
He dosent sound so enthusiastic back in his old videos
It's a common thing. As you do more videos, you become more confident with them, and ya know what to do with them.
Sharkie626 o
Cody Tipen it took him 4 yrs to get that many views so he's only making around $2500 from this video by this yr.....

It's not that he's not enthusiastic, it's that he's shy because UA-cam is a scary place
Thanks sir
I have watched you for awhile now, I think you do a good job of explaining your procedures, you don't over complicate things.
I know Chris used RTV red because thats all the parts store had available, however you are much safer using RTV green "gear oil" which is recommended for diffs and transfer cases
When you've never heard of something and his piston return spring video got you on edge
'oil catch can' got to admit I've never heard that term before. Your videos are my go to for learning and confirmation. Thanks Chrisfix :)
My diff fluid, came flying out one day from a busted gasket, or something or other, can't remember. It made changing the fluid really easy, except now Al Gore hates me.
Sculpture Junkie haha
Sculpture Junkie LOL just hate Al back.
Cat From The Future who’s ai gore?
Los Ojos De HotSpanish yeah
Cat From The Future how did that much diff oil come out off your diff . I call bullshit I bet you don’t have a vehicle nor know anything about them
Even though his enthusiasm wasn't there to begin with, he still pulled off some cracking tutorials. You just can't beat a ChrisFix video.
Now ready to do my first Differential oil change to my Ranger3.0 v6 in 17 years, her first change in 17 years, what a cruelty 😬thanks you so much!.
I’ve never seen so much of ChrisFix’s head! Great content from way back and until now!
I have a 2010 Ford ranger and I never changed the differential fluid it has 46,000 miles and with this video was very helpful... Thank you keep doing your videos
I have a 1990 jeep rat rod with dana diiff,s I put black RTV on the diff and cover but I flatten the RTV a little, I dont wont that stuff squishing out and getting in to the lube, the problem is the RTV starts to set up some oil no matter what spray you use, rags etc drips out, just when you get ready to cover the diff some oils runs out, the real deal is you dont need a torqe wrench unless you have some fancy after market aluminum cover, some hold more lube and have a higher fill plug, but that only works if your seals are perfect, good video by the way
Good job again Chris. Your fluid looked rough. For any viewers that have driven through high water, THIS IS IMPORTANT ! Moisture can enter through the ends of the axle and the front yoke seals and bearings. Changing engine oil, transfer case and tranny fluid as well a differential will save your ride. Well done with the torque wrench. Just remember that using an extension or deep sockets will throw off your torque settings slightly ( mostly for HIGH TORQUE settings ). WRENCHIN" and RIDING.... JK.
+James Krivitsky Well that expains it, thanks. I was all set to ask, WHY?
i noticed it too. a little milky..needed to be changed.
Chris needs to put a longer breather hose if he's gonna drive through deep water.
Good video. Thanks for the detail. You missed a bolt when you tourqued at 25 lbs. The bolt at just past 3 oclock
+yakpirate I noticed that too. I doubted myself at first then checked the comments.
+Dark_Arrow same lol
Hehe, you’ve changed a lot in 6 years. 😂 Ran across this video just scrolling through the feed, and figured it would come in handy, given I’ve got a small leak at the mating surface of my differential. 🙃
Glad your a bit more enthusiastic in your new videos. I started to fall asleep.
Haha, old school ChrisFix!
ChrisFix Glad your a lot more enthusiastic
My mechanic actually made a drain plug for my truck. Works pretty slick
Great job and production. You have a clear explanation (verbally) of what your doing and cover everything I needed to do the job.
Great job. Simple explanation and great video editing.
If you cant find or loosen the fill plug look for the vent, the other deal is when you take the rear cover off, you can tap a new hole, or just get a cover from the JY.
😊 so much easier when you drill a hole in your pumpkin in the bottom and threaded and install a drain plug
I did this, and when I reinstalled the cover with the rtv, i i couldnt get the bolt in, and the cover smeared side to side and all over the place.... I hope it wont be leaking fluid now...
I would definitely check it to make sure it's not leaking!
Well, did it end up leaking?
He doesn't clean out the differential housing. There is always still oil in the bottom and that is where the majority of metal filings will be, and that is maybe the most important part.
Thanks for the vid, I really liked the part about making the gasket.
You must have the best maintained B2300...
Yeah haha
*B3000, the 3.0 V6 model. The B2300 has a 2.3L 4-cylinder.
Chris... Thanks!
After viewing, I only wish i knew more about the additive, slip fluid? Help.. If someone tells me more specifically how to read the tag on the bolt that supposedly will tell me if i need that or not? I see just a ser.# so.. no? Didn't expect it to be spelled out, but in this case, it's me that needs clarity.🤔
Watched a couple other vids, but yours was best explained and thorough about things to watch for. That's coming from an aviation electrical/mechanical installer and inspector in the aviation and aerospace field's of manufacturing. 😁
Note: the bottom has a small puddle of oil with the fine metal chards that could be somewhat wiped out with an absorbent shop towl.
Do you need to add the additive? Most gear oils today already have the additive in them. What kind did you buy?
If you have to use RTV, they make a specific formula for rear diff and transfer cases now. That red RTV mess will leak if you fill with 80-90w.
Hi Chris, great stuff buddy. Despite the fact that this thread is 7yrs old I am hopping you could come accross my comment.
Indeed, I wonder is you could make a DIY on how to solve the Honda CRV AWD C-1841-27 DTC. It seems to me that even dealerships are struggling with this one accross the whole north America!
Cheers my friend
A permatex representative came to our school and said you don't have to wait 15 minutes before putting the cover back on (: it's best to do it as soon as possible
This is solid since I have a ranger and the b3000 is practically the same truck
I always mark any covers that I need to torque in sequence; whether it's valve covers or any type of oil or gear covers. It is so easy to miss 1 bolt. Then I come back around & repeat it a second time just in case I missed 1 which is still possible even while marking the sequence number on the cover. In addition, the cover may be slightly warped warped but not visible to the naked eye. Repeating the torque sequence a second time should cover any issues that may come up. I also number the torque sequence when torquing the heads. It has always saves me.
Outstanding tutorial! Very good
Outstanding video. The only thing I would add is use differential fluid in a spray bottle and rince the gears while open to get the rest of the old oil out and into the drip pan, the cleaner the better.
The first ever video when he said ''hey guys chris fix here!!''
Crazyyyyy
Teacher where did you learn all this...me like C-Fix simple 😂😂..... Thanks maaan.
Rub that cover on a wire brush bench grinder, it will buff that old gasket off nice and shiny.
This is the first video of yours where I've seen your head.
Love all your videos Chris. You are by far my favorite UA-cam Mechanic. Question. When replacing the drain and fill plugs do you thinks its helpful to use Thread Sealant?
Really love how Chris like the comments 6 years later
while you are at it, weld it
lol
He means weld the diff to make it a posi traction, not the cover.
Henry Butcher normally lol
why should he weld it?
Rudpavv Rudpavv
look up welded diff
chris i liked you wiping the brake cleaned on with a wipe ,,,,,,, i seen someone elses video where he sprayed the cleaner on the diff getting brake cleaner inside
Thanks Chris. You are the man.
This brings back good memories 😖
thank you mr.chris! i had to do this and your video help and guided me the whole way!
Thanks Chris you just saved me $150.00
where did you learn so much about cars?
JL I've found you can lurn 95% on you tube
... Except how to spell properly- it's LEARN! ;-)
I give thanks for your support
The first video with the “Hey guys, CrisFix here” intro.
If in an emergency, you can replace the axle oil with papaya fruit.
Although the spare parts inside broke, if you use papaya everything feels smooth without any noise.
It's just not able to last long, because this is used in an emergency.
Simple easy to digest
Steel wool works good for cleaning surfaces like that🙂
you are awesome mr chris.
Use a gasket with a lift coat of RTV. 😊
Idk why im watching this, i dont even own a car
Because you will at somepoint
@@OmegaHellHound543 i have no legs
@@Michael-xb5zq oh. Damn I’m sorry about that. 😕
I don’t get American trucks. Don’t get me wrong I love them and I will definitely get one for my next car. I’m currently 16 and I just got a Toyota Tundra and a did a dif flush it’s it’s way easier. Literally 2 bolts fill and drain.
every vehicle I have worked on or seen has the same two bolts, only cheap/low end domestics seems to have to have the cover removed, ford ranger, etc
Check " older " Vehicles when you get a chance... Even expensive ones have " One " bolt. 2 Bolts later when People got mad and they changed it to please the People.
This is the first video he actually says, "Hey, guys, ChrisFix here..."
Look at those shocks😳😳😳
I usually squirt clean fluid in there to rinse it out, but it's not necessary.
Isn’t this a bad idea for an older vehicle that’s never been changed? Heard it’s best to leave it unchanged and top off only
Did you wait 24 hours for the gasket maker to dry before adding fluid?
You sound sad af in this vid
he does
true
I've noticed that too in certain videos. I'll hug him to make him feel better
and in others he sound ultra happy like
yay my car is broken time to do a video xD
In all his older videos he does
Question why didn't you clean the inside of dif with break cleaner? Tks
CAN YOU PLEASE DO A FRONT DIFFERENTIAL ? I'VE NEVER SEEN ONE DONE . I DON'T KNOW IF IT WAS EVER DONE ! I HAVE A 1999 F150 XLT 4.6 L EXTENDED CAB . 260,550 MILES ON HER MAYBE 1,000 MILES IF THAT WHEN IN FOUR WHEEL DRIVE . LIMITED SLIP IN THE REAR & POSITRACK IN THE FRONT ,THAT IS WHAT THEY TOLD ME AT FORD WHEN I BOUGHT IT . THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME TAG ALONG WITH YOU WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS ! IF YOU CAN THAT'S COOL & IF NOT THAT'S COOL TOO! JUST HAVEN'T SEEN ANY SHOWN . BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ON YOUR JOURNEYS ! ENJOYED !
Stop speaking in all caps. And front diff is the same thing
You could put a small tube in drain plug to suck the old oil out It would be easier
Omg... ur voice is totally diff from 8yrs ago.. now is 2022... i tot its someone else
You should put a plastic bag over the gears to keep debris off while cleaning the mating surface.
You could do that, or a towel.
Thanks Chris!
I just did this job and I used rtv with a paper gasket and put it all on and started driving right afterwards. Didn’t hear anything or feel anything out of the ordinary and checked for leaks and there were none that I saw.
Holy shit this is the first time I see your head after all these years 😂😂
great viseo :).....you missed one on final torque
Trying to charge me $130 to do this. Shit, thanks for the DIY, Chris.
Is it worth changing after 300000 miles or as long as the differential works
I would get it changed out at that high of a mileage!
If you didn’t have this Mazda I’d be screwed 😂
That looks like mud almost oozing out. When is the last time they changed the gear oil in that differential?
Why was there not just a drain bolt made for this?
Thank you!.
Haven't been getting notifications even though I'm set up to receive them.
Wait no thread locker?
Thank you
Its always fun watching these but then when it comes down to doing it, it’s sometimes a shit show
I am collecting the needed parts. I went ahead and bought an additive. Is it bad to add the limited slip additive to a differential that is not limited slip? If I do, will it help with fuel economy? I have a 2004 Ranger XLT 4.0L 6 cyl.
Looks like the rear shocks have seen better days i know this video I old but yeah they need replaced
I use a Lubelocker gasket super EZ no mess
Great video but it doesn't have to sit for an hour and I don't know anyone that will torque it
Fun fact a 1994 F150 XL 2wd has the same rear axle or at least a similar one
+Texas Chevy, I cannot reply to your comment for some reason. The same goes for the other comments you have posted. I would try to figure out why because you are not going to see my replies otherwise. If you dont have a torque wrench, go get one. It is worth it if you are going to do any work on your car or truck. You can try doing it by hand but you cant really torque anything with a normal ratchet.
Watch your local hardware and auto/tool shops for sales, subscribing to their sites for early sale notices can help too. I suggest also getting both an "Inch-Pounds" and "Foot-Pounds" torque wrench. The old type with the deflection gauge work almost as well - garage sales etc if you are tight monied.
***** I'm still needing an inch pound one myself.
ChrisFix There is a setting that they have set on their account. It says something like "allow replies to comments" or "don't allow replies to comments". If they have it check/unchecked, nobody can reply to their comments.
