    FF7Remake was my 1st FF game. Personally, I think it was incredible. Without any knowledge about the original, I enjoyed the experience from beginning to the end. The amalgamation of music choice, combat and visuals was activating neurons on my monkey brain, especially that sound effect when you stagger an enemy and you know the pain is coming for them. The characterization and group dynamic were directed beautifully, and I couldn't have asked for more.

      It was incredible i think people dont understand what Remake means, Remake means a complete change from the original unlike say a remaster, Not only that the dude that made this video hating a game without playing it is just something else entirely.

      I played the og FF7 as basically one of my earliest JRPGs (only european SNES titles were earlier) and from then on every single FF game on it's release.
      I am definitely not in the camp of people who wanted a straight faithful remake. And I absolutely loved the systems and especially the combat and then the fleshing out and coming to life of all your favourite childhood characters. Like it is amazing and all I have hoped for. But, I also firmly believe the original FF7 story was absolutely waterproof and solid from a get go. Adding additional minor plot points or additions, yes, give me that to flesh it out especially when they announced a trilogy. In all honesty though, that multiverse/time travel stuff just rarely works.
      The end of Remake is literally a pun on the full ending of the original title. That is just too much meta stuff going on, especially 4th wall stuff with the 7 seconds line from Sephiroth and the list goes on. It is so massively offputting until the pot ultimately resolves (like in pt3 probably), but until then it is just awful to experience. If the game would have been released in relatively quick succession, aight, I can live with that, but waiting EIGHT years to have a silly multiverse plot resolved is just crazy tbh.
      But, if you would delete all my prior knowledge and FF7remake+rebirth were my first ever experiences as well... guess I'd be mindblown like I was as a kid with the OG as well and ultimately this is where the divide in the community comes from. FF7 fans know the story was already perfect, but new people don't know that, so any story is cool for them in the framing of the FF7 universe and it's characters.

    Your take on it being one of the VERY FEW just top-tier AAA single-player experiences hit me hard. I'm an "old" guy, and over time video games have just kinda lost their grab on me because of how many I played in my youth, but the FF7 remake trilogy rekindled my love for gaming and I've played more games in the last year than I have in the previous 5. They're just so well developed, it's insane to me that their process isn't front and center for every other developer.
    Square-Enix's approach on this trilogy should be - if not WILL be - studied intensely by all developers who are still trying to crack the code on AAA quality. The combat system alone is worthy of a dissertation.
    EDIT: AND THE COMBAT SYSTEM WAS DEVELOPED AS LITERALLY THE LAST THING IN LIKE 6 MONTHS WTF ARE YOU DOING EVERYONE ELSE

      For real! As someone who grew up with my trusty PS1, I’ve felt like games are getting less and less creative and charming. Remake and rebirth were the first games I’ve played in years that sparked my exploration excitement, there’s just so much detail and thought put into every aspect of the world and the areas (even with remake being quite linear)

  • @JuliusKingsleyXIII
    @JuliusKingsleyXIII 5 днів тому +98

    I think people really overstate the flaws of Remake part 1. Claiming it has boring side quests while almost certainly ignoring or outright lying about the mere playability of the mini games and nature of side quests in the PS1 games is sheer nostalgia blinders. Im always glad when more people can take those off and enjoy the remakes for the great games they are, and feel bad for the people who insist the ps1 game is better because its old.

    • @SomniaCE
      @SomniaCE 4 дні тому +10

      The games are just too different to directly compare and saying one is better than the other is a fools errand. Its apples and oranges and honestly that's more of what I want from remakes. If I want to play the already stellar original I'll just play it again, gimme something interesting from a remake. No matter how good a game like Silent Hill 2 remake is, the fact that it is so derivative of the timeless original makes it hard to really care. Stuff like Dead Space or RE4 changing and mixing things up while truly iterating on the gameplay in interesting ways help keep both the original and the remake relevant. The same is true for FF7R even if its status as an alt-timeline thing trojan horsed in as a remake helps give it more of its own legs.

    • @JuliusKingsleyXIII
      @JuliusKingsleyXIII 4 дні тому +7

      @SomniaCE Agreed. Remaking literally the exact same game with better graphics is boring and pointless. You should strive to improve on existing art and at worst you fail and people still have the original and at best you create something truly special like Re4 being the best game ever twice.

    • @Mingodough

      I’d disagree. There is something called pacing, 40 hours just to get through midgar which is 5 hours in the og give or take. Feels bloated, time is valuable. Why spend 40 hours with a game where the main characters don’t develop too much compared to the original where they go through entire arcs and stuff.

    • @JuliusKingsleyXIII
      @JuliusKingsleyXIII 4 дні тому +5

      @Mingodough Apples and oranges. The original game was a ps1 game with only bad english localization text and poor graphics even for its time, and certain technological freedoms and limitations. Times have changed. The 40 hours spent in Remake are deeper and more flavorful than the Ozg, partially because it integrated material from the extended canon that came after the OG. Its faithful in expanding the world. If they just remade the exact game, we would not have gotten Episode Intermission, Queens Blood, such deep combat systems, etc. If you think spending 40 hours in Remake's Midgar is a waste of your time, I'd propose you dont like the world of FF7 that much.

      @ I’ve played the og when I was young and played through it at least 3 times. While I understand your point, saying I must not like ff7 is wrong. I just like how it was, before all the added stories. Those were made mostly due to the success of ff7 in order to milk it for money. While their individual quality can vary from bare bones to high, I still stand by my opinion.

      @@fy4b230 Currently playing Rebirth after kinda having to drag myself through Remake's midgame, and I'm feeling it. Rebirth is bringing me back to why I began to love JRPGs more than any other game genre back when I played Xenoblade Chronicles.
      That said, I'm still sceptical about the direction they're taking the story to. Even as someone that played the OG last year, I found it hard to understand some of the things going on in Remake and still keep happening in Rebirth. Some concepts are too poorly delivered imo and are made to appear less interesting than they actually are - which I only noticed after looking some of them up online. That's really the one big gripe I have with the way they're remaking this story, it's really less of a Remake and more of a Sequel. Glad for all the long time fans that understood that right away and were able to enjoy the differences though! :)

    • @fy4b230
      @fy4b230 5 днів тому +1

      @ yes I see it as more of a “sequel” or to be more precise a reimagining with all the parts in place.
      It’s hard to explain, but basically it’s the OG FF7 if the rest of the compilation, AC being the biggest part, had already been written or planned when they sat down to write the OG.
      All the original creators are in charge of this trilogy. They all know how important that game was. All the major plot points will be left alone and rebirth doesn’t change that, however they’ve added and changed the story to fit the compilation.
      With all that said, Part 3 will be huge. It could take this “sequel” above the original or completely miss the mark. No in between imo. If it’s the latter, oh well, I still can play the OG for the original story, and I can play the trilogy for everything else, essentially turning it into something like the dark souls trilogy to me except with cutscenes.

    • @CritsVG
      @CritsVG 5 днів тому

      @fy4b230 Hehe yeah I see what you mean. Personally I feel like they're taking it a little far, the OG story was already so complex it really didn't need stuff like the Whispers, but I can also see them wanting to go further. Might have been more positive about it if at least fragments of CC were integrated into Remake, started playing that alongside Rebirth and suddenly I do understand they're not having Sephi teleport everywhere randomly in Remake lol. Stuff like that would have helped a lot and I think they could have done a better job explaining what they had in mind with that. Still, Rebirth so far is an amazing gameplay experience and I'll just have to see where they take the story. The OG is still holding up very well to me too.

      @Shiftarus Hard disagree. The major story beats are the same, but there are smaller events, lines of dialogue, flashes of the future, things that shouldn't be there but are, things that should be there, but aren't, characters that know things they shouldn't, and more that recontexualize those major plot beats. The ending of REMAKE especially, and much of REBIRTH beats you over the head with this because media literacy can vary, but I know there are still people who didn't notice all the signposting.
      So I guess I'd just recommend playing the original again so it's fresh and going through these games to see just how blatant it all is. It's crazy how much there is to notice when you are brushed up on the OG and locked in.

    I feel sorry for new people who have never experienced FFVII back in the day and are only experiencing it now through the remake games. It was a complete adventure from beginning to end in one game, ended up spending one entire summer when I was 12 playing through the game and it left a permanent impact on who I was as a person. As it did on pretty much every other person I know who played it. You can replay it today, but after years of playing newer games it feels so damn dated. The story and music is of course, immortal.
    The thing is I would think of the remake games as being akin to GTA6. In that they are these massive, sprawling adventures that are so detailed and huge that if Square was to actually complete the "entire game" in one single game, this single game probably would have taken at least 10 years to develop. If VIIR-3 comes out in 2028, it would have been about 11 years of active development on all three games. Plus any post release/additional content. This is very similar to how Grand Theft Auto 6 is seemingly taking about 12-13 years to actually come out. In the case of GTA6... the game literally still isn't out. And may not be this year. In the case of the VII remake games, 2 of the 3 games are out. And they're wonderful, but it leaves a real hunger in your stomach for that 3rd game.
    Essentially these represent two different approaches for these "super games": either spend 12 to 13 years making people wait very, very long for the game and then charge them $100 or more for it, or release the game as three games which as far as we can tell, get better with each entry. It's a tradeoff, essentially.
    But I feel bad for people who never played the original and are not going to understand that the Remake games are sequels and that the plot of the original game is fundamental to fully comprehending the plot of the remake games.
    Also Attack on Titan is the greatest anime of the last entire 15 years except that ending which sucked the biggest, longest fattest donkey dick on God's green Earth.

      To each their own, but to give a different perspective, I would actually argue that life is too short to artificially TRY to feel any other way than how you sincerely and organically feel about it.
      Personally, I used to adopt a "look at the bright side, you'll enjoy more things" attitude in the past, but I found that all that ends up doing is wasting your time humoring things that don't deserve to be humored, because over time, the false illusions that this attitude creates will eventually crumble anyways, and the things that actually hold up to painstaking scrutiny are what actually rise to the top by the end. I think ultimately, that "look on the bright side" mindset is just short term gain, long term loss, personally. If you try to like everything, you'll end up truly liking nothing.
      I find that I'm much more efficient in discovering/optimizing what I truly value after abandoning the "look on the bright side" attitude and trying to be as critical as possible instead (I try to be respectful about it, though).
      The actual problem I find among some cynics (that I suspect is what "look on the bright side" is a reaction to) is that people who choose to be critical can sometimes let the emotional side of those negative impressions affect their disposition and snowball in a much more insecure/immature way than it needs to (that said, optimists can easily fall into the same trap as well). But you can (and in my opinion should) fix that (aka. grow the f up) without becoming any less critical, in my opinion.

    Regardless of whether the change are bad simply on the basis of being changes, I dislike the changes simply because they're bad, and would be bad even if the original had never existed.
    When remake came out I criticized them and got flack because I "had to wait to see where it leads first", but I already understood logically where it would have to lead, and what ripple effects it would have on the efficiency and effectiveness of the story at large. But good luck convincing people of that, so I waited, bided my time, and then Rebirth released and literally everything I said would happen happened, and as a result what could and should have been one of the most emotional moments in gaming became a convoluted cgi spectacle devoid of any soul and completely incapable of properly evoking emotions because of a lack of understanding.
    Remake/Rebirth traded in what made the OG so great in return for what makes other modern blockbusters so bad. Humanity, genuineness, straightforward in the moment emotional engagement, for mystery boxes and explosions and rule of cool.

    I've got some bad news for you. The original Final Fantasy 7 was just as corny.
    For that matter, the first 6 final fantasies were all extremely corny. That's part of what makes them so endearing and what makes the Remake series feel so faithful.

    Good News, Rebirth improves the Air Combat, giving you dedicated Launcher moves and a chase attack, kinda brings it more towards Devil May Cry than Kingdom Hearts.
    I got to experience this game in a unique way, I was around for the original Collection and loved parts of it like the movie and Dirge of Cerberus but never actually played the original myself. My Dad, Uncle, and older Step Brother all played it around me, occasionally I'd watch, and their reverence for it rubbed off on me. So when I played Remake it felt like the game I heard so much about, like exactly what I imagined. I don't think I would have felt that way if I actually pushed myself to play through the original, I tried it once but thats when remake was coming and a part of me knew it would change my future experience.
    I genuinely can't wait for part 3. And I think other people really wanted to hate just to hate, the Remake being 3 parts is a perfect way to give everyone what they've asked for since the first ever rumors came out. If they released 1 game that was only 50 hours people would have been let down, It would be a forgotten disappointment by now if that was the case. But now with new releases every so often, and other remakes in between, its even more memorable than the original collection was but because the internet is so much bigger it dwarfs the reality of that.
    And little thing about the changes, we kinda asked for it, how many people wanted to save Aerith in the original? That still may not happen this time around but does it not feel like we and the new game are trying to do that now? Also a lot of changes like Sephiroth showing up much earlier was actually planned for the original and cut for some reason. And if the original never came out these would just be 3 new Final Fantasy games.

    Great review! Sub well earned, looking forward to the Rebirth review. :]
    Only thing I'd disagree with is hard mode being available from the start. It's obvious that hard mode is the definitive way to play the game since it forces you to interact more with commands than spells due to the MP limitations (or figure out a way to regen MP in combat), but it's tuned to you having decked out characters with all the cool materia combos. I think it'd be a negative change to make benches restore MP in hard mode, and without doing that I don't think there's a good way to make hard mode work from the get-go.

      As someone who doesn't particularly like Rebirth for gameplay and story reasons, I would say that on top of it being a great decision, they also fixed Remakes problem of having a lot of cringey attempts at humor that just don't work/translate (Roche functions a lot better, there's no lame "Psyche!" Jessie joke, etc.). Rebirth for the most part is funny when it tries to be and cleans a lot of that up.

      @@richardkhchang curious what you don't like about the combat, the mix of real time to make me feel immersed and keep my chimp brain engaged with the old school turn based ability selection to make me feel like a refined gentleman who makes strategic decisions every now and then imo is the most fun battle system I've played. the synergy abilities and issuing commands to your party members and then having them sync up is so sick too.

    • @richardkhchang
      @richardkhchang 3 дні тому

      @@Mehrk I think the combat is the best that Final Fantasy has ever had and agree with your thoughts on that (in fact, I hope all future FFs build off this system). When I say gameplay gripes, I'm referring to the map design, side-content, open world elements, mini-game integration, pointless mind-numbingly soulless busy-work, having something as critical as summons locked behind doing that pointless busywork (realistically, anyways), etc. All of that stuff is bad enough to take a lot of the shine off of the combat strengths for me, personally.
      That said, while I agree that the combat is good, I wouldn't say it's so great that it can single-handedly carry my love for a game, unlike some other raw-gameplay games might (no JRPG does, that I can think of, personally). Games like these still need great story to be worthwhile for me.

    I was so hyped for Remake and I played it day one and thought it was a great game and a cool new direction. Personally I don't care much for 1 to 1 remakes. If I wanted to play the old game it'll always be there. Give me a completely new experience using these old characters and story? Yes please. Mix the familiar with the new. Does it always work out? No but the fact that fans are speculating how the 3rd part will play out makes it much more exciting than a plain remake.

    i don't like this. i'm an oldhead. i love the story of DMC1 and KH1, so i can't say its because i'm above it. i don't like the padding, how every boss has a midbattle cutscene that robs control from the player with HP barriers that make sure you don't phase skip, or how members being unalived is handled (or rather, not handled), and the lack of stakes makes it all feel so tame despite the chaos and frantic energy on-screen. i would rather play DMC2 than this.
    if you still genuinely enjoy this game, there isn't something wrong with you. don't let me or anyone take that away from you. i still love KH1 and KH2, in spite of many similar criticisms and partially even because of them, and will continue to do so until my time is up.

This is a sequel that goes hand in hand with the original. The story changes aren't there just for the sake of being different. It's a new story all together. The game is made in a way to give people something familiar but also tell a new story.

Also cloud's counter system including the later counter stance is broken, once you focus on that it breaks the game especially the last bosses that have obvious sword attacks chains.

The game is a REMAKE, that means its different. its not a remaster. besides the sidequests and Chadleys simulators being filler the rest of the game is great, i would even argue that they add to the game. I just finished replaying both the original game and the remakes and I only cared about the plate falling in remake, because i knew these characters, i knew the slums. i helped those people and now then they were gone, in the OG I spent 2 hours in the world before the plate dropped and i felt nothing. You can still experience the original game and remaster it yourself in like 3 minutes on PC with the 7th heaven mod launcher.

    A lot of my problems with the Final Fantasy VII Remake, are now mostly replaced with my problems with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
    But the only thing I really don’t like is mainly the voice actors. Now in fairness, I don’t think all of the remake actors were bad. I think Barret’s new actor was honestly better, and i don’t really care about Yuffie & Red XIII’s actors… and while I can see why Aerth’s current actress was loved by fans in the Remake, I really find it frustrating that Aerith had to once again, get another voice actress. Really though, Zack, Tifa, Cloud, and Sephiroth’s new actors were terrible. Caleb Pierce’s just a downgrade from Rick Gomez’s Zack. Brit Baron’s Tifa ok, but she’s not as good as Rachel Leigh Cook’s Tifa. Tyler Hocleyn wasn’t able to do a great Sephiroth despite him being good at playing Superman, which makes funny when George Newbern did an amazing job at playing Sephiroth AND Superman. While Cody Christian’s Cloud tries so hard to imitate Steve Burton’s Cloud, but failed.
    It really sucks how the previous voice cast, didn’t get to reprise their roles for the remake games. Aside from Aerith, the Compilation actors had been voicing the FF7 cast for over a decade prior to the remake’s release. So it sucks how they got replaced.
    Like I said, i don’t think the new voice cast was all bad (As I do love Barret’s new voice actor.) and Rebirth did give us two new voice actors that are good… but this is the video for the FF7 Remake, and not Rebirth.

Remake all in all is a "better" game in many ways, but many people just wanted an exact replica of the original with updated graphics, which I think is boring. This breathes new life into the story and characters. I'll just play the original with some PC mods if I want a remaster of the same game

Which made me about twice the age of the target demographic. Fast Forward to now, I tried to play Remake, but its new action focus has outstripped my aging reflexes; I want to love it _but I just can't play it._ Too much flash and glitter on the screen, I can't even see what the party members are _doing_ any more! First shock: the scorpion mech boss in the reactor mission, on "Normal". In the classic, it was part of the cunningly disguised tutorial steps, and kind of a softball. Modern gamers are not expected to work their way up to "git gud" but "alredy B gud" from the very start, and the Remake scorpion boss comparatively high diff was a rude shock. Would have been worse if I hadn't watched reactors play it thru first! If the beginning is that hard, how much more was it going to ramp up as you go?! The Sector 7 map alone was too sprawling for my mind to encompass, and the map kept disappearing. I had real troubles with the controls not letting me do what I wanted to do (look at party member status and such) when I wanted to. Every controller button is context-sensitive and has multiple functions, but my contexts and the game's weren't lining up! I really really miss the all-in-one 🔺button menu of the classic. If FF7R's combat ran more like FFX's, I could have lived with it, but this was all too MMO-like for me (as has been every FF since FF11 and beyond). I avoid MMO's like the plague, but that's the direction everything's gone, even the games that aren't actual MMOs!

    Personally, I feel like maybe 80% of Remake is better than OG and if the whole game was that way, it would be the better game (I don't care about nostalgia/purism). However, the 20% that wasn't is really egregiously bad (and they happen in pretty critical moments and with pretty pivotal elements) and undermines it to a degree that I don't think I can excuse/overlook. In the end I ended up only lukewarm about the remake trilogy games, and preferring other modern games (even things that don't entirely blow me away) over them. I think I only played something like 12 games this year and Rebirth was like 11th for me.
    I agree that its embracing of silly levity/cheesiness (which the OG shares) is one of its strengths (and convey an unapologetic sincerity that's refreshing these days), not one of it weaknesses (or if they are, it's not a big deal), though.

    1:35 Wait, let me get this straight. Did you hate the game without playing the game or playing the original? Did you hate the game through osmosis or something? XD
    the decision to split the game to a trilogy was actually a pretty good decision, the point of a remake is to experience the original in more depth or in more expensive ways that the original couldn't do, people do remember the original was on 3 discs don't they? It's a pretty big game and to give it justice the devs decided to make it a trilogy, and looking back Remake and Rebirth are absolutely massive with barely any padding, the side content is important to the whole feel of the game, the npcs the stories immerse you in the world, I don't know I think the game would've been far worse if it was just one instead of a trilogy, imagine Midgar being 10% of its size, imagine most towns and the open world gone from rebirth, all that with part 3 tons of events happening, I don't get the people complaining about the trilogy like do you want a half assed remake or a fully realized well designed one? You can't have ypur cake and eat it too, you can't have the full FF7 world remade in today's hyper realistic graphics and have done well and with full realization it deserves yet but all done in 4 years in one disc.
    I'm also waiting for you 16 hate video, people hating on 16 is why I wake up at 5 am everyday to check if a new FF16 hate video got uploaded. It's like my morning coffee.

      I think my main issues with Remakes pading are the missions that add more but feel like a slog to play through. The sewer missions, the ghost train mission, some of the wall market portions, etc.
      Some parts feel a little too long for my liking when they could've shortened it a bit and cut to the chase. Maybe make it a cutscene or two or shorten the gameplay a bit where it's necessary. It was just something I've noticed upon replay in 3 different playthroughs.
      I don't mind the idea of changes and added story ideas like the parts with Jessie's family or maybe some of the cool missions in the mako reactor sessions, but sometimes it feels much when the original certainly timed it a bit quicker.
      There are some other issues I have but those are just the most coherent I can make at the top of my head writing this. I don't mind Remake but I can see where people are coming from with some of the pacing here and there.

    • @alenezi989a3
      @alenezi989a3 4 дні тому

      @grimdara4227 i get what you're saying, some parts are boring, I loved the train graveyard but I hated the sewers, my issue is that I don't see these parts as padding, these are dungeons and are part of the game like you're not going there to do something superfluous, you fall into the sewers after knowing about the sector 7 plate falling, you go through the train graveyard because it's on your way to sector 7, padding imo is what happens in FF16 between each major boss battle, like the missions you do before going into the empire, or the missions you do in the desert town or collecting the parts to build a ship for Mid. That's padding not only you're not playing the game you just run from npc to npc and each one gives you their life story, it's extremely slow, kills the pacing of the game and very boring. And they only give you useless sigils. I don't know if you play Remake and didn't do any side quest the game is really fun and streamlined I can't call any part padding tbh. Same thing for rebirth, even though it has tons of side quests the side quests are actually fun and rewarding. When I think of padding I think of 16's structure. And thankfully Remake doesn't have that.

    Honestly, I feel like the story chances are an extremely complicated thing to talk about, as you said, everything will depend on the last game and how everything's wrapped up, there's an infinite sea of outcomes for the game and none of they will satisfy everyone. Even if the Remake series managed to be BETTER than the original story-wise, it'd still leave a lot of people dissapointed as they expected a more loyal recreation of the game they love so much, which is perfectly understandable.

    The FF7 Remakes, for all their bloat, stuffed with extra stuff in every area, have actually managed to surpass the original-except for one frustrating catch. Progression doesn’t transfer between games, except for completion bonuses like summoning materia. So, if I grind for the best gear in one game, none of it carry over because the hyperactive devs keep tweaking the systems, then what’s the point of doing Top Secrets in Remake for instance? It makes all that effort feel next to meaningless except for earning achievements, which doesn't much appeal to me.
    At least in the original, if you grind hard in the first two discs, you carry that strength into the third. That might be one way the original still keeps an edge over the remakes. ☝☝☝☝

    square makes crisis core as a PREQUEL, remakes the entire game so people play it before ff7, and then some dumb people ignore it? then ask dumb questions like "why is everything on fire" and "why is cloud crazy" LMAO
