One year later and I can't stop thinking about this game, too. I love it so much. And I def want a stand alone version of Queens Blood and Chocobo Racing.
I kind of understand it - Metaphor did some cool stuff but did not land for me personally. Whereas Rebirth was an every box checked scenario in my opinion!
@@ErekLadd I try to understand, but can’t. I can’t fathom a world where Metaphor is chosen over FF7 rebirth. Rebirths voice acting, music, story, combat, etc are on another level. The team put everything in to that game, and it shows. Metaphor is more like a PS2 era RPG. I enjoyed it, but its music (apart from the battle theme), graphics, voice acting, and repetitive turn based combat (seriously.. just turn in to your “persona” and attack) put it on a notch lower than what I would consider to be a GOTY contender. Good game.. I’d give it an 8. But GOTY?! I simply don’t see it
At the start of Rebirth, Aerith stated that Whispers took away her knowledge of the future in Shinra Building during Remake. So our current Aerith, didn't know anything, until Cloud gave her future Aerith's White Materia, when she regained the knowledge.
It is a game I plan to finish this year. I just got a ps5 recently for the very purpose of playing this game. So yeah it is definitely still on my mind.
Beyond the direction of the story which is worrying or not it is the game I needed. A game that manager to modernized everything I loved about the sense of wonder if travel and rpg mechanics I adored in the PS1 era. Rebirth is a very modern game that feels like a PS1 game in the best sense possible. It is extraordinary
I love the 7 remakes and I like the changes that leave us wondering even though it's a remake, but the downside to them taking the multiverse idea from 8 is we are even less likely to get an 8 remake series than we already was before.
Brilliant game! I'm still thinking about it every day too. Zack ending up at a church with flowers growing at the end of Rebirth (when in all the other worlds he went through, the flowers were dead and mako had run dry) could mean a few different things: 1. He's ended up in the main Remake party's world somehow. 2. He's ended up in the OG timeline somehow. 3. He's ended up in Aerith's 'dream world' somehow. 4. He's ended up in 'the promised land' somehow. 5. He's ended up in a new world we haven't seen yet which has a different fate to all the others somehow. All so intriguing!
Yeah I don’t know how likely it would be but I really want Zack in the main timeline! I mean cloud and Zack already fight so well together 😭 But I suppose maybe the more realistic answer is that he keeps traveling through different timelines and helps take Sephiroth down behind the scenes and eventually dies or reunites with Aerith in the lifestream. That’s my guess anyway!
FF7 Remake series is like a Remaquel (remake and sequel). It’s like a sequel layered onto or augmented into the original. Love the combat. It’s like action with a turn based/active time battle feel. I’d love it if they added the FFX being able to switch out characters during battle to give me that feel that I’m controlling all members of the party during a fight. I’m also fine with all the side content because they made a number of it optional, unless you’re a trophy hunter. I wonder what the total amount of additional regions will be. I think we can guess some of the next regions and their associated summons but some upcoming summons, I don’t know what their regions will be. Also I really wanted to travel with, as well as use, have all 9 characters available for battles, but… Aerith. Maybe even 10 characters if we factoring in Zack. But, oh well. Can’t wait for that Highwind.
Honestly, the remake series of FF7 is one of the best 'games' ever made. Hands down. I LOVE these so much and I hope we see more content like this from Square.
It's interesting that you call out FF16 specifically as taking a risk when I'd argue that the game is very risk averse. The pivot to a completely different more mainstream genre seems like a choice driven by endless corporate meetings, market data, and focus groups and not something purely born of passion, to me at least. When I played it, all I could see was all the areas it took from modern AAA gaming and not something bold and trailblazing like we've gotten in the past.
I disagree. 3rd person arcade action game has not been popular since DMC5. And all through PS4 era, there were not that many popular ones. This genre died out in the Xbox 360 era. Action combat has sort of drifted into Souls like 3rd person action combat in the last 6-7 years. The combat director they hired was the main reason why the game went in that direction. Yoshida had said, that before they hired Ryuto Suzuki, they were still deciding what kind of combat they would go with, and turn based was on the table.
Was kind of bored at first due to its slow pace but then i completed all of the side missions got all the materia, summons and all of the chadley quests. The last 3 chapters were exceptional and i loved the ending so much. The game did not disappoint at all ! I just wished they made a more engaging open world and less of these irrelavant side missions. All in all a 9/10 in my opinion.
Hopefully the next game is more streamlined in that way then! We will still have the existing world to explore - at least I think so. And then the expanded stuff that comes on the original second disc.. So we'll see!
FFVII Remake and Rebirth are the best games ever made! They are legends with in the jrpg scene. Truly that's my opinion! I played the OG back in the day and yes it got me hooked right away and it changed my life aswell!!!
Remake is probably the most beautiful looking game I’ve ever played. The voice acting, the character development, the music all blew me away. I enjoyed it, but by the end I was definitely disappointed. They padded the hell out of it. I think my biggest problem is fans of the OG were begging for years for just an updated version. Square decided to change gameplay (which is cool, but just feels like enemies are hp sponges) and change the OG story. Also, yo choose to drag it out over 3 games for 8-10 years is too much. I will eventually play Rebirth, but I’m disappointed in the direction square decided to go.
I played this so many hours in one setting. Flaws made me not really play it that much more but its good to go back to its game world and explore new areas. Some of its flaws makes it a chore to start a completely new play through tho like some mini games
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is amazing, my only concern with it is how the amount of side quests there were, They burned me out, but thankfully that side content was optional
I think it’s important to avoid talking about ‘timelines’ or a ‘multiverse’ when discussing the plot. The game strongly implies that these aren’t branching universes (multiple times, across the whole game). I think there is an important narrative purpose to them beyond letting us have Zack back or teasing the players, one that’s rooted in character beats (rather than plot) based on coming to terms with the inevitability of death and how the dead live on through us. The team have hinted in interviews that this is where they’re coming from and I think casting it as a Marvel/DC style multiverse cheapens the impact and can act as a thought-terminating cliche.
Future generations will be shocked that a game of this scope, variety, and quality lost to metaphor. Not to say metaphor was bad, Just that this game was standard setting.
Thought this game was the best game I played all year (2024), and it may have made it into my top 5 of all time. I loved 7 Remake and couldn’t wait for this to come out. I sunk way too much time in the 1st month this was out, and so knowing I would want to replay it before the final part (3) I have put off replaying through it on hard; we will see if I make it to the next one. I personally like how it has added to the story of the 7 universe, and it’s not just me playing the same exact FF7. I understand why it isn’t for some, but the good news is there’s so many ways to play the OG if that’s your jam. I try not to yuck anyone else’s yum. For me what really made this was the combat system. I liked 16 (since it came out somewhat close and you brought it up), but I think Remake/Rebirth’s battle system is superior, and may be the coolest hybrid out there. It’s silly that they could make this multi-character combat (Remake/Rebirth) and on the same system (PS5) make it an only 1 character system for 16. I know people complain about some of the filler (there’s a lot depending how you want to play), but it seems like they made a lot of it optional (I think you said you blew through in 30s hours). Not trying to ignite the internet but if that’s what ruined it for someone, maybe try not having to platinum it? I’ve found that makes some games more enjoyable when they’re “good enough” that I want to finish them, but also I’m not so in love that I want more after it’s over. Lastly, sidebar to something you said here, and you’re not the 1st: the concept of accessibility specifically in regards to inferior hardware (the Switch). Would it make sense to simultaneously release on PS 5 equivalent/comparable hardware i.e. PC and whatever the comparable XBox system? Probably. But I think you could have a whole interesting conversation on trying to force this on the Switch 2; if it is truly PS4 comparable (which still isn’t bad, I have been catching up on some PS 4 games I never got the chance to play before, and that’s great for a portable device), do you want the beauty that was Rebirth or are you ok with the game being “nerfed” graphics and possibly gameplay-wise? I am not a software developer so maybe some experts can add some insight, but if they have to make a game so it runs on everything within the last 10 years, will that be not using modern hardware to its potential? Maybe that would be a cool vid or podcast topic? Apologies for the long response, but appreciate your content and liked your take on this awesome game. 🤙🏽
FFVII Rebirth, while it had some flaws. I love the game with a passion. The gameplay is extremely addictive for me. Absolutely adored Queens Blood, too. Loved it so much I started a completely fresh save on the PS5 Pro. Yup... Still love it 😅
There’s a whole lot of content in rebirth - I think the most I’ve ever seen in a game - and whilst some of it is slightly frustrating (looking at you, Chocobo flight range) or feels bloated, I’m hoping square are using it to test out what works and what doesn’t with new audiences. Some of it might have been bloated but I had so much more fun playing rebirth than I did playing XVI.

Crisis Core Reunion already took that - would’ve been perfect though. My vote is for Reqium!
Why would they call it Reunion when Crisis Core already took that title? It would overlap with one another.
