When a group has a dedicated fanbase they're (most of the time) guaranteed huge success, and this is a good thing... what pop artist hasn't made it big because of their fanbase? So the key is... you need a fanbase, or you're going nowhere. And the many ways BTS connect with their fans and created their ARMY since their debut in 2013 is what has made all of this possible. They just didn't wake up and release LY:Tear. They've been years in the making and thanks to the Internet, they have a worldwide, gigantic, dedicated fanbase.
But that isn't enough either, you need to blend sounds now, with good production, and BTS has really done that recently. Their album sounds good.
And yes, honestly I don't know where k-pop would be if it weren't for UA-cam, so.

There are a few problems with this statement.:
      1. As stated by jamie, it tries to claim the moral high ground (these people are so mean to people who are so nice).
      2. It generalises people who don’t like K-pop to indie supremacists.
      3. Most comments are actually talking about the K-Pop itself.
      4. It tries to point out hypocrisy, but t doesn’t work out because few people “hate” BTS fans for being mean, they’re disliked for being annoying.
      5. Of course there’ll be fewer K-Pop fans and more Rock/Hip-Hop fans in here, because Anthony makes more videos about that kind of music.
      6. You say how literally no K-Pop fan has been rude to “indie rock supremacist” while having *literally* been rude to them in the same sentence.
So stop saying that one side or the other is “nicer” or “friendlier”.
All fanbases have nice and mean people.

    • @tatsuyasuou
      @tatsuyasuou 6 років тому +24

Giggity-Goggity-Doo Giggity-Goggity-Doo I’m not saying that all people who dislike k-pop are the ones leaving rude comments, I’m saying that a small group of people are. This explains why I chose the phrase ‘indie supremacists’ rather than ‘antis’ or suchlike.
And I completely agree that not everyone who dislikes k-pop is a bad person/who likes k-pop is a good person, I’m literally trying to get the point across that you *shouldn’t* judge a group by their vocal minority.
Not all k-pop antis are ‘indie supremacists’ as I put it, but the few that are are just as toxic as hardcore k-pop fans, however they feel the need to attack the genre and casual fan base as a whole, because of a vocal minority.
I am not attempting to attack or demonise anti-fans or people who simply dislike the music, I’m attacking trolls who spread the toxicity they apparently dislike.

The reason why BTS is only group that broke in US market (also Japan, UK) and made it is because their fans have to do everything to support them, so fandom learnt to buy songs, stream, promote them everywhere where it's possible. I follow them since 2015, it's all happened in front of my eyes, they didn't just blow up. BTS had no power of big label. So their fans took role of promoter. But the reason why people supported them in the first place is not because of the looks and nice sound. K-pop industry is full of groups that debut almost every month. The competition is mad! BTS stand out even in Korea. They have quite a lot of older fans there and general audience respect while usually koreans look down on k-pop boy groups.
BTS are really genuine as people and their underdog story plus talent make people stay by their side. BTS members are no near arrogant or rude, some of them came from poor background. Their lyrics contains a lot of relatable stories and most of them are unusual for k-pop groups. BTS even shared how they feel about being "idols" or famous, their depression. It's really brave to Korea. Social media just exposed their personalities and thoughts on music making process, struggles, goals and really close brotherhood and friendship the guys have. I mean they basically raised their youngest member who was 14-15 when BTS debuted. Their company didn't have a lot of money, they even slept in one room and they know what struggle is. BTS gone through a lot of hate in early days, people fabricated controversies for them out of nothing. You need to check their whole story, it's like a book. All those things we know about them make them seem relatable and down to earth. And I think it's honest to say you don't expect to hear those things about boy band. Boy bands are never deep. But BTS are like whole package but also they are very human. That's the key.

It's hard to imagine another Kpop group breaking through the way BTS has done because BTS uniquely had a stronger western/international fanbase than domestic fanbase at the beginning of their career. They initially had stronger international popularity than domestic. In South Korea, they weren't the biggest boy group until just last year, before that it was always Bigbang and Exo. Even then it's mostly because of how big they gotten internationally, and boy group like WannaOne was arguably more trendy than BTS (wannaone have a "it" boy and are from a hit reality show), despite BTS being south korea unofficial nation's boy group at the moment. BTS also build their fanbase gradually for 5 years, that's a long time. They been active since 2013, and No other Kpop acts come close to how big their international/western popularity, so this just looks more like a BTS thing, Not a Kpop thing.
Honestly I can see the western industry pushing for more groups seeing bts success, not necessarily kpop but the Kpop industry definitely see there's a potential in making it in America because of bts success, but it isn't that easy. Korean industry/media always points to BTS social media activity and engagement as the key to their western popularity but it's much more than that. It was gradual climb to the top for 5years, they're imo a bit more authentic than a lot of Kpop groups, and they had a better western following compare to domestic, from the very start.
Key words that summarized BTS success are ORGANIC and DEMAND. It was a organic growth and There was a demand for them in America. I see no other Kpop acts having that. I don't see one with the potential to grow as big as BTS. There was already signs for BTS years ago and there's none for the other groups. Other Kpop groups and company try so hard to analyze BTS western success, and they for sure will try to take advantage of it, but it ain't gonna work out if it's not organic and there is no demand for them. They're dumb to think they can slide through America. They gotta slowly work for it and earn it themselves to be as successful as BTS..Unless they manage to pull a PSY, be a one hit wonder viral meme.

I'm 28 and I've been listening to korean music for about 10 years....
When gangnam style became famous I was actually kinda sad 'people will think that asian music is always like this'.
Majority of BTS fans are even older than me. So as you can tell, we are not listening to music, at this age, because someone is handsome. They write and produce 90% of their song (with help, of course, they are still young and still learning). And the most important thing for fans is their lyrics. Try 'tomorrow', 'young forever', '뱁새'..... and even 'fake love' is talking about, like the album title say, loving yourself.
But I think people don't trust good looking people (and asians) to have skills in music. And they think they are only famous because of their faces. And other thing. The 'kpop' label. Like, why are people calling every singer from korea kpop? (jay park?, dean? big bang? Ikon? ...) (and for example, pop has a bad connotation in my country)
Go check their journey from the begining until now :)
And like some magazine wrote: 'you'll like bts music if you listen without prejudice.'
    ps: try their cyphers!!
and I'm sorry for any english mistake or lack of coherent in my sentences. english it's not my native language.

The way the KPOP industry is right now there won’t be another cross over anytime soon I think. BTS is an outlier in the industry and that was why they became so popular.
There were so many factors that created BTS’ success but I think it comes down to a few things. Creative Freedom is one of the main reasons and it’s something no other KPOP group has. BTS’ lyrics is a huge factor in their success and why they’re loved so much.

For sure labels in South Korea are already trying to push their artists more and more in the west. That has always kinda been the goal but it had slowed down in recent years due to some pretty famous failures during kpop's second generation (bts belongs to the third). Now that bts has achieved it, companies are scrambling to find out why (since bts came from a pretty small label, it wasn't very expected), and it's been reported that one of them created an entire task force for it.
However it will be difficult for other acts to cross over in the same way bts did. Bts is a bit of an outlier in kpop when it comes to their lyrics (though things are changing and their influence can already be felt on other groups) and the way they communicate with their fans. Early on they didn't have much opportunity to be on TV so they started creating a lot of their own content, which in turn built a very active fanbase, with a similar "pro-active" style. For example, bts fans didn't wait till bts' label started pushing them on radio. Fans themselves organized mega campaigns, developed relationships with DJs, did a lot of research, etc. No kpop group has the same kind of fanbase currently.
Bts did increase the overall visibility for kpop though, and you might start seeing some other groups charting, even if much lower than bts. Blackpink, for example, a girl group, has a single coming out in June and I wouldn't be surprised if it charted on the Hot 100 since they were on the bumbling under chart with their previous release, an year ago.

You're thoughts are interesting and I guess we'll just have to wait and see for what really happens. However the thing is it's not a matter of big South Korean entertainment aiming for the American market because they've already been trying for years, and it hasn't happened. BTS did this subconsciously, starting at dirt bottom with only a company on the brink of bankruptcy backing them. There is no formula except being genuine artists making music that touches the hearts of listeners no matter what language they speak, and it may seem like they're suddenly coming out of nowhere but in reality BTS had to crawl their way to the top both in the US and even their own country . You can try to recreate a sensation all you want but in the process the essence that makes the original special will be lost.

    • @shockofthenew
      @shockofthenew 5 років тому +11

Exactly. I've been following kpop since 2009, and when BTS entered the scene it seemed unlikely they would ever make it far at all. Their production company was almost unknown, and in any case it was unprecedented for any act outside of the 'Big 3' companies to find success at home or abroad. On their first visit to America they handed out flyers on the street for a free show. For the first couple of years the 7 of them slept in one room and could barely afford to eat. There are hundreds of artists competing to even get a foothold in that industry, and the vast majority only manage to release a few singles and rack up a few million views before disbanding. BTS stood out from the crowd at first for having top tier dance and performance skills for a rookie group, but there are a lot of great dancers in kpop. It was nearly 4 years into their career (late 2016) when they won their first major award in Korea, and the pure shock and bewilderment on their faces when it was announced shows just how unlikely that was. Fast-forward to today and you can see just how crazy the rise and rise of Bangtan really is!
I remember what motivated their fans in the early days (and it's the same thing that motivates them now): their combination of deep, poetic self-written lyrics, willingness to address difficult and controversial issues, and the sincerity with which they talked about the thoughts and experiences which inspired them. They're really relentless in tackling important subjects from democracy and capitalism to mental illness and suicide, the school system, hardships of young people, self-doubt, self-hatred, the importance of friendship and just generally the never-ending struggle to accept yourself and keep going despite the many difficulties of life. Despite the heavy subject matter their songs are full of character and sarcastic wordplay and overall have a very hopeful message. In addition the skills of their rap line are really outstanding, and they showcased their true love of hip hop rather than treating it as an expendable 'concept'. Finally their humble, hard-working attitude and unique personalities bring the whole package together.
In conclusion there is no 'BTS formula' to be emulated. The only thing other companies can do is try to find and promote talented self-producing artists with something to say rather than manufacturing carbon-copy groups.. which would be a good thing for the industry anyway if you ask me! There are some really exciting indie artists coming out of Korea, and I'd love to see some of them get more spotlight ^^

@@shockofthenew You said my thoughts perfectly as a kpop fan since 2011 and BTS fan since 2013. I remember I was concerned they would disband quickly like some other groups I liked over the years because it was clear they were struggling and were facing some controversies and hate, which considering how talented they are would have been a huge waste of potential. It was difficult to imagine they could even win a Daesung award in Korea against super popular kpop groups like EXO, let alone break into the West and achieve their current popularity. I'm still finding it hard to believe how far they've come to this today.

So, here's the thing: BTS wasn't made by following a "formula". Sure, they were put together, but since the beginning they had artistry freedom and no rules while using their social media, they are complete artist even if they look like idols. Us, BTS fans, have a debate about if they are K-pop or not...
Even koreans don't see them as k-pop music but korean music (there's a lot of stigma with idol music over there and a difference between idol music(kpop) and korean music). You say more groups need to cross over, but sadly, I would say it will be almost impossible to replicate BTS success. Why? Because of ARMYs.
We made the connections with radios, we promote BTS ONLY and we tend to be territorial about what we have right now. I'll put an example: A radio station gave us the opportunity to have 1 hour of kpop daily... or not playing BTS at all. We choose to say no to kpop, and even if multifandoms (fans of other groups) got angry at us they couldn't beat us in the poll. Actually, their fandom culture is different from ARMYs. While most of us stick with BTS and stand for them only, they "support" tons of different groups, which cause them to not be very efficient at promo/streaming. :/
If you want to have an insider opinion or debate with us please reach our fandom, because even if I don't agree with what you say here I'm open to hear you.

I'm a fan of BTS and many other groups too but I gotta say unfortunately for kpop, BTS has been constantly trying to break out of the industry stereotypes, musically, lyrically or on the personal level, which ultimately resulted in such a massive following. They've been actively writing and producing their own music since the early beginnings, have openly discussed taboo topics of the Korean society in their lyrics and have been cultivating a very close relationship with their fans on social media. All of these things are quite rare in the kpop industry as most groups are still as manufactured by the agencies as it gets. That's why I cannot see a huge surge in the number of groups making it in the American market in the near future, even though there are a few with a huge potential (like BLACKPINK)

I hope BTS' success triggers two things, mainly:
    1. Gives a fighting chance to foreign artists that speak in their native language and lessen the need to completely cater to western trends in terms of language barriers, image, etc.
    2. Demonstrates how K-pop groups with less company involvement/micromanaging are usually more attractive to the listener. Though I'm not a fan, BTS is one of the few groups to have a very large say in the creative process, and I think that it shows.
I hope this is a trend that continues, to be honest. I really think it could help bridge the music gap between the US and other countries and get a little diversity in the pop industry. I really don't need to hear a fuckin' reggaeton song for the 100th time, so any other foreign influence is welcome.
Also, these guys are clearly pretty young. I think they have an opportunity to grow a lot and get out of the K-pop stereotype; same with other groups where the members have a large say in the creative process. When the management companies learn to let their groups breathe and let them have some creative control, I think that the music will improve overall. Hopefully BTS' success can convince them. Anyway, I'd be interested to see how long this K-pop wave lasts!

Here is the truth : No one in kpop industry or South Korea thought BTS would be so successful because they were an anomaly & weren't doing things 'right' (right = following the system)
So here is my verdict : No one, at the moment, can be as phenomenonal as BTS because BTS IS AN ANOMALY IN THE KPOP INDUSTRY. Unfortunately, most groups are still forced to work within the 'manufactured' system.
The truth is, it is exactly because BTS defies most of the kpop industrial norms that they were able to break through. BTS is less about visuals & more about quality music marked with socially relevant message, intricate philosophical concepts & personal struggles. 99% of the kpop industry is still more focused on the visuals than the talents, message, music or stories.
(They all have concepts though..but not as socially relevant as BTS')

Plus, the kpop community have express negative opinions about BTS being recognized in the u.s. and don't want other groups to be "Westernized" so don't expect more kpop groups to chart. Moshi It’s funny because I’ve watched some kpop music videos from various different groups and have come across comments that say stuff along the lines of: “I don’t like this song, but they look beautiful so it’s alright”. I just really don’t get that. A lot of kpop fans are only interested in visuals, which is something that I’ve never been able to get on board with.
I’m here for music that I can connect to and enjoy. Visuals are nice, but to become a fan of someone who is supposed to be a singer and/or rapper simply because of how they look...I’ll never understand that.
Ironically enough, BTS used to get a lot of shit for their looks because the leader of the group doesn’t fit the Korean beauty standard. I’m glad they are being recognized more so for their music; after all, that’s what they spend so much time working on (although there still are a lot of people who only care for their visual appearance which is really disheartening).

I agree that Blackpink would be an ideal group to promote internationally, they have two fluent English speakers and only four members which is easier for a lot of people to understand (as opposed to, like, 9 or 13), but I don't see it happening unless their agency gets its shit together in a big way.

So today in Spanish class, my teacher told us that we would be listening to a song in Spanish. Already, I began to tremble. I had a bad feeling about this. “Which one?” I ask shakily, not wanting to hear the answer. “Despacito” She responds. I begin to hyperventilate. My worst fears have been realized. I fade in and out of conciseness. I clamp my palms over my ears, but I know it’s futile. The song plays. I’m crying now, praying. God, Allah, Buddha please help me. I curl up on the floor. There’s nothing I can do now. And then it happens. The chorus plays. The girls in my class open their mouths. The screams of the damned, the shrieks of the tortured fill my ears and bounce around my skull. My eardrums rupture, blood leaking out. I try to scream, but no sound comes out. I can only sit there, violently shaking as it happens to me. After what seems like hours, it’s finally over. I try to move, but I cannot make myself. My brain shuts down as my vision fades to black. I muster the last of my energy, uttering the accursed word.
    “Despacito”

It's definitely interesting. I used to be in general a kpop fan before bts and in 2015 I kinda just became only a bts fan lol. There are a lot of great acts in Korea (not just kpop) that I would love to see get a boost from bts' success but I find it unlikely to happen any time soon without a huggeee push from a western label. bts right now is having to fight tooth and nail with mostly just small fandom power in the US right now (besides some recent general public interest). I think our numbers will go down quite a bit next week, but they always have. The fact that we could get larger numbers is impressive enough to me. I'm hoping to see better long term streaming and buying numbers, as well as hopefully seeing their US label really push their new song on radio. It's all still very much up in the air. With how hard it's been for bts, a korean/kpop crossover from other acts will be hard for a while. I'm not willing to put in the support for others like I have for bts and I just don't see a lot of US kpop fans willing to put in the same effort right now if they're not a bts fan (and others also have much smaller US fan numbers). But! I'm all for more acceptance here in the US for foreign language music, so hopefully bts is the beginning of that journey

I just wanna say thanks for being so mindful about all of this ;-; It means a lot. You talk about them with respect just like any other artist and we don't get that a lot.
You have a lot of really thoughtful comments on BTS and their current popularity. Thank you for sharing them with us.
I know neither of us can predict the future, but I do want to point out that BTS hasn't really marketed themselves to fit into a Western audience specifically. They had a huge international fanbase that garnered them enough attention in the west for them to perform on American television, perhaps sparking an interest in the general public and helping them to chart like they are now, but they never geared themselves in a way to break into America. I suppose learning a bit about the culture around latinpop and making a song inspired by latinpop on the new album (airplane pt 2) is as close as they've gotten to... westernizing themselves, or something, but BTS have never branded themselves as anything other than a korean group. I think a huge part of them breaking into America was that they weren't trying to. Other kpop acts have tried and have had varying levels of success but not to the level BTS has.

There's definitely something unique about BTS' meteoric rise in the western industry that needs to be analyzed by the entertainment companies in kpop and I hope that more will be able to translate, especially since there have been many attempts and there's already a slow sort of crossover happening with the increase in kpop concerts happening in North America. This is also, a great milestone for representation i feel. More asians in western media please.

The whole Kpop industry is trying to figure out how BTS did it. They are actually trying to recreate the formula of BTS. One big company even admitted they have a BTS task force dedicated to basically recreating another BTS (which I think is bullshit. One of the things that make BTS is...well... BTS you can't just recreate that) everyone in the industry is scratching their heads especially because BTS were considered the trash of Kpop for a while a lot of people looked down on them. If it was a top group like girls generation, Big Bang, EXO, or even at this point Twice I personally don't think anyone would be trying to downplay their achievements or dissecting them like that.

Thank you for this, Melon. It’s always nice to see a different view from a fan. I myself don’t think there are many “kpop” groups that can do what BTS has done. Especially because they aren’t “viral”, they’ve worked hard for 5 years to get where they are today. And they’ve always stayed true to who they are as a group and musicians. I hope btw that you’ve found a better translater than the one you used last time ;)

Retrograde Actually, @btsanalytics, the largest BTS fanbase account on twitter recently conducted a survey of the fans. You can find the results here if you're interested:
      twitter.com/btsanalytics/status/989481914267553792?s=19
Basically, 38,704 people were involved and 55% of them are 18 or above. So it's true that many are young, but more than a half are still adults. This is only for twitter though so the ages can vary on different platforms, but if you go to r/bangtan on reddit I can guarantee that the majority there is overwhelmingly 18+

bts is interesting because they developed a cult following in america before they really became successful in korea. having a english speaking member and a lot of fans willing to translate for free has been HUGE in developing the international fandom. kpop companies have been trying to break out in america for years, but tried too hard to mold themselves to american standards to disastrous consequences. while other kpop groups are of course very popular in korea, the first bbmas win really got the ball rolling for bts to become without question the biggest male group in korea. large companies still want american money, but no kpop group other than bts has ever charted higher than SIXTY-ONE on the billboard 200.. and that was crush by 2ne1 in 2014. so far this is a win for bts, not kpop as a whole. now everyone is of course trying to figure out the “bts formula” and i’m super curious to see who the next group to break 2ne1’s record will be...

Our fandom biggest current issue and which were trying to solve is longevity in charts, we have to fix our streams and were already working on it, but that needs to be done in order of showing real interest in BTS showing they're not just the hottest group around and will fade in a while. Also, the image we and BTS has, the big generalization of a Boyband and their crazy fans, yes we're very passionate but one thing I can assure you is that at least 90% of the fandom aren't just here for the looks and catchy beats. In the process of getting BTS music and message spread and reconized we have to deal with prejudice and generalization first, but I'd say we're doing pretty good up until now. We have fanbases dedicated to each one of these things, streams in various plataforms, radioplay, our numbers in charts, how fast or slow is our rate, voting... Being organized is a plus, we have a close relationship and fast translation to other languages so whenever we want the fandom to focus on something we make sure everyone is aware of it. Is very satisfying to see the results of this work, we have the attention of people now, the fandom keeps getting bigger and bigger... Is cool to follow how we're growing along with BTS, even more me as fan of them ever since their own country wouldn't reconize their worth.

You might find Vox’s episode about “Kpop” interesting in their Netflix series “Explained”. And it’s mentioned there about the law passed for the idols. And i think you should find out the story behind it and who is the group TVXQ (or DBSK in Japanese) and what happened with their agency SM (which is mentioned in the video as one of the Big 3 company). It’s a very interesting story behind a cruel industry that’s not explored in the video.

I don't know about other K-Pop catching on, but BTS has certainly made it a bigger possibility. Other companies are looking into trying to replicate their success, which quite frankly is ridiculous because BTS is built on their sincerity and struggles from having been part of a company with nothing to its name at the time. Now we have companies from the Big 3 creating task forces to study them and create a formula that will give them the next successful group. But you can't replicate their struggle, or the genuine connection to fans that BTS has through their music and actions. It's not an equation you can plug into a calculator to spit out a solution.

I wouldn't say that BTS has perfected the formula for K-pop in the US. I doesn't look like it from the outside but in terms of the Korean industry they're pretty unique. They're kind of the 'underdogs' of K-pop and I think that's really endeared them to the international audience and made them stand out amongst the 'garuanteed to succeed' of the industry.

The thing is ... BTS is very different to a lot of other kpop groups in so so many ways. The fact that they write their own music, that they are authentic musicians and artists -- that is not the norm AT ALL. I feel like western audiences connect with that they feel is honest and relatable and authentic and most if not all kpop just isn't that.

Fantano, just wanna say thank you for talking and reviewing BTS’ latest album! We fans really do appreciate people taking them seriously. If you want to know more about the reason why we don’t like calling them a “K-pop group” it’s because their global success is unprecedented (minus PSY) so we want that recognized as a “Korean act/group”. ARMYs often feel like the title minimizes their success down to the k-pop box.
There’s also debate amongst Koreans as to whether they should be called an “idol group” (read: K-pop group). It’s fascinating and if you’d like to read more about it there’s a distinguished Korean critic called Kim Youngdae on UA-cam that talks about them at length (and whose videos are subtitled). He’s also on Twitter too.

Their producer and creator (Hit man) Bang Shyuk, has been giving talks since last year. He's a big reason as to why they translate so well. He has a degree in a aesthetics, that makes it a whole new game, because when you're a music exec and you're knowledgeable about the industry that tends to be all you know. Every so often, you'll get lucky but what I witnessed with BTS and they're rise was an authenticity, a sincerity that didn't wane in the idol training period, that has to have fostered.
What I'm trying to say is, the industry's game has been checkers but BigHit has been playing Risk.

i came back to this video a year later to finally say what i was thinking a year ago. which is, i totally understand your point about "opening the floodgates" and more groups crossing over. it's what we are seeing in small increments this year, south korea's 2 out of their 3 big labels are currently pushing each of their "best" groups, they also got a distribution deal (one of them even a full sign contract) with western labels. the thing is, and what i wanted to say a year ago too: bts isn't a formula and it ain't gonna be that simple.
it's not the trend of kpop that finally broke in with them but literally just them. it's not kpop what western fans found good enough to export, but this particular band itself. i tend to say this a lot to others: it's not kpop that broke in, but bts who just happens to be a group in kpop. kpop's been trying to make it in the usa for over a decade and tbh nothing changed since those times for the rest of kpop. if you look at statistics they still sell and find the same fan interest as they did before bts broke in, despite now the bts trickle effect being in full force.
it's bts uniquely that set themselves apart from how kpop usually is (they are producers, lyricists, open, genuinely present as humanely as possible and not just as ready-made products, they were nurtured into being artists in contrast to the rest of kpop which is fitting faces and voices into the same formulaic boxes.) what broke them in in the west was 1) them being genuinely good artists with good, tohughtful content 2) their fandom. and 2 is especially important. their fandom started out from the same core kpop fan pool as any other but the difference that set ARMY apart was that they saw how bts is different than kpop. they are full of genuine artistry and not pretense. and the fans recognized it, to the point where they started to shape into a fandom that dreamed big breaking them in on the mere thought of "these 7 artists deserve to be heard everywhere."
it's true that the bts trickle down effect is in full force, like i said above, there are already a few other groups that are trying to replicate their success, and some others also enjoy the mere fact of being taken more seriously just because they share a genre with bts. but what i noticed is that so far it's not clicking big and i'm not at all shocked by it. because like i said, it's not kpop that broke in, but bts and replicating something that is based on genuine uniqueness is hard if not impossible. i find it especially proven by the fact that the current groups that are trying to replicate bts success are struggling even with not 1 but 2 big label money backing them (their korean/usa labels both are among the biggest) trying every gimmick in the game from youtube full mv ads and title track ads on spotify and heavy mediaplay.
bts is something special set apart from kpop. if any kpop group will replicate their success they either gonna have to pay a lot of money and effort to emulate organic success OR they will have to go against what kpop usually is in a lot of ways and become more like artists than products of their companies, be their own unique entities, just like bts.

the only "formula" that everyone is looking for is BTS being BTS as the 7 members they are, regardless of any business strategy ...
the question about wether kpop will go further in the US or not ... it stays a question and depends on other groups and the public
but BTS as a korean group , they definetly have their name remembered in the music industry right now , they made an impact that people will talk about for years to come
it's true that BTS are part of "kpop" since they are from korea but it doesn't mean that all other groups in kpop are like BTS

You've honestly missed out on so many incredible records because you've blatantly ignored everything from the east that isn't Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and Boris. You've already missed some *incredible* records since the beginning of 2017 from Japan and South Korea.

Thanks again for the insight Anthony! I really appreciate that you're taking the time to actually analyze their music and their success/impact/etc. and take it seriously. Unfortunately that's not always the case with many other reviewers and publications, but if we keep getting reviews and discussions like this one I think it'll be a great step toward progress regarding BTS and just music in general!
To speak a little on your point that other groups will have to cross over as well, I personally haven't been able to get into anyone else as much as BTS. That goes for K-pop groups but also western groups and really artists from every part of the world as well. I'll be interested to see if it does happen, but I also personally feel that BTS can exist successfully in the west & the rest of the world without the cross-over of an entire genre as long as they keep growing and making music that's true to them, which I trust them to do.
(I want to make it clear that I'm not wishing failure upon anyone else! I'm having a hard time wording it but just from my perspective BTS are sort of treading their own new path, and I'm incredibly proud of them and excited by it. I've already seen people become more open minded as a result and it makes me really happy)

i don't think any groups other than BTS will "break into" the US mainstream music scene. don't get me wrong i like BTS they used to be my favorite group, but i think the reason they're making headlines is because it is so unusual to see a foreign group (especially of a culture that's so different from the US like korea) and people are just curious. like most americans have probably not even thought about korean culture before
i also get the vibe that american media views BTS and kpop as something cute, like BTS are kids that are getting to participate in the big boy american music industry and are treating them like children and not the hardworking talented guys that they are. i think this reflects the views of the general american public unfortunately. i don't think kpop can become big and be taken seriously here. it's a passing trend.
btw, as a fan of both kpop and the type of music that anthony typically reviews, it's nice to see him giving kpop a chance and discussing it in an unbiased way rather than shitting on it lol
i used to be super "indie" and only listen to iceage and perfume genius lol and i never thought i'd like kpop but here i am!! give it a chance!

Every fandom have their dark sides to be honest. I never listened to kpop before bts. They caught my eyes when I heard their songs. And couldn't stop getting myself in because how I can relate to some songs. It's not just that they have a fan base which makes them so great to be honest but they themselves. Their songs. Their love for their fans. Which made is love them. Follow them. Help them achieve their dreams. And we became big just in 2 years. Which is bound to stir jealousy from other kpop fandoms. And since they couldn't stop attacking us. We had to defend our boys so you could say we're sensitive but majority of our fandom is mature and over 20 and not teenagers.. I quite like Dreamcatcher's sound and am somewhat fond of NCT, but these groups are too new for me to say i support their sound 100%. KARD is pretty dope though, but they don't have many songs.

David Hatle America still has it though. We have it in forms of lesser known artists mostly at this moment. Anyway, the BEST R&B is from the West in the 80s & 90s

I'm unsettled by your comparison between "yellow fever" and the fungi that's killing frogs rapidly.

Even though I'm not into Pop Music in general, dont even get me started about kpop I don't like it at all, BTS caught my eye since they've been blending different elements of music. I really do believe they deserve to be where they are right now , way way more than these Pop Artists of the Western Industry that have been taking over the world for years without providing anything new. It's just the same formula over and over.
I don't get why people keep on hating on them just because they are a Kpop Band. Yeah , korean pop makes me cringe too, all these high pitched tunes and the fancy visuals get on my nerves, but BTS is not like that. It's way more than that. Personally speaking, their rap skills made me a fan.
Some of their fans are crazy. They really are. It's beyond dispute that some ''Armies'' are annoying. But hey, stop judging an artist by his fanbase. There are many annoying death grips/kanye west fans too.

Hey Anthony, I already commented on your album review, but I would also recommend doing a collab with a youtuber who's very familiar with K-POP (JRE's probably best) when you do one of these videos

im glad you took interest in bts, but saying that they should be sent to north korea was a bit much imo

You should read up how BTS became famous, there was no ''formula'' and it could have gone any way.
They have a huge discography and the members just fit really well with eachother. Their authenticity can't be suddenly replicated, since that's kind of an oxymoron.

The formula that made bts so big, has been their innteraction with the fans. As if we are one of them, we are more of a friend, a family member.. then fans. And this is coming from a fan who followed them since the debute and have seen them struggle and be greatful act like they aren't looking for the top spot. U see it in the way they first started, their youtube videos etc. Nothing is planned out in terms of their behaviour and personalities. They're not filtered or limited or fabric made. Also, They're making music THEY LOVE, genres THEY love, very much involved in the music they're making. All that combined plus the sillyness and goofyness of these 7 stars made them very relatable and loveable.

Thank you for your honesty! I've been looking for a review without any sugar coating, since I've always wanted to know what non-armys really think of the boys' music.
