One overlooked aspect of F.E.A.R is the AI. Many journalist praised the game how smart the enemies were and as far as I remember they really made you sweat. When the replicant soldiers enter a room, they often throw a grenade in first, they suppress and flank you given the opportunity. That's also quite a difference compared to modern games, where the AI enemies are just often brain dead. I 100% recommend trying it out for this very reason.
Yeah and then a lot of people try to downplay it like "oh it's all an illusion, the AI isn't that smart" but that's the whole point right?? If the game can trick you into thinking the enemy AI is smart then it has succeeded in creating immersion.
Such a massive nostalgia trip. My dad was always a bit of a tech geek but we weren't minted. I remember persuading him to buy me a 6800 GT in the end, after trying and failing to negotiate a 6800 Ultra out of him. Also remember spending hours and hours on the Nalu, Timbury, and Clear Sailing demos. The Nalu demo was especially insane, couldn't believe it was running on my PC! Ah... those were the days.... I could go on for hours.

Great video! FarCry was my first PC game. I had an FX5200 and a Prescott P4 2.8 in a Dell 4600 and it ran terribly. I saved and bought a 6600gt with the AGP to PCIE bridge and was floored by the shadows in that game. I might have to go back and play it again!

Should have invested in the am5 platform so you can upgrade in the future. Am4 was a great platform but it's dead. Sent it back and get something on the am5 platform

For the money I spent my 5800X3D is better than the equivalent costing processor if I went to AM5 so I would have had a less good processor and RAM would cost more. The upgradability factor is a non issue because when that times comes I'll probably wait until AM6 anyway. My last processor is a i7 4790k :))
For Doom 3, use RBDOOM-3-BFG, and set it to use Vulkan! Source engine games have a 300FPS cap but you can change it. Anything above 1000FPS makes the engine freak out so I usually limit it to 999FPS with "fps_max 999" in the developer console (or launch options)
i rarely rarely rarely play any modern games. mario, zelda, ratchet and clank. that's basically literally it. it is quite nostalgic to see these old games though. i was playing many of these on an athlon 64 x2 with a 7600gt. then bioshock came out and i built a whole new system to play it. a q6600 with a 9600gt. i still have those components. boxes and all. the games too. boxes and all.
I tried to play original Crysis on 4070 and it doesn't work with DX10. Game crashes at start. That sucks because in my opinion it looks better than remaster.
I have a copy installed on my PC. It worked like half a year ago, but now it doesn't start. This is an issue of Nvidia drivers or Windows update. Bet there's a way to launch it with just a little tweaking. I agree the original looks much better than remaster

The times the 4080S had high % usage is because it's downclocking and sleeping. These games are so easy to render it is energy saving. If you would like to see how much it would use with no energy saving, you can enable Perfer Maximum Performance under the games profiles (never do this global). It may reduce stutters (if there was any) and may also give some FPS more.

Far Cry 1: for outdoor water reflections, it needs a mod, otherwise reflections aren't rendering properly. The game ALSO has Shader Moder 3.0 HDR available, but it needs manually enabled from console unfortunately.

Ill be mostly play 4k but i wanted to play older games too one of them being Half Life 1, is it a bottleneck that can cause harm to computers? Im new to bottlnecking and other weird stuff like that. Doom 3 is definitely not running to its full potential. Forgot what needs to be done, but I did a play through with a 6800XT with much higher framerates.
Gta IV has completely broken reflections and emissive lights on PC btw, install fusion fix it fixes it all, and about performance use DXVK it smoothes it out for good. for a simple setup just download iv fixer and follow the setup it will setup dxvk and fusionfix automatically and restore removed radio songs.
I wonder what's up with VRAM utilisation. 7GB in Half Life 2? 8 in Doom 3? These numbers should be at least twice as low I think 🤔 I like replaying old games on my PC, and I rarely see more than 2GB of VRAM used in 2000s titles.
I imagine 4K plays a pretty big factor in that, although I do feel there's some scaling going on as well, I see often a card with more VRAM also use more memory even though a card with less would use much less while not being fully utilized itself.

you need a 280hz display i use 3 1080p displays that do that and these old games, at high fps at least the ones that dont break unlocked are amazing. 4k is fine, but that 60fps cap on most of them is a major dealbreaker for me. i only use my 4k display when im playing something like 2077, alan wake , horizon, spiderman you know the big single player titles. even then i feel the fps sting depending on the title. plus i didnt think it made sense for 3 4k displays even on my 3090 ti, i do have a 4090 now but even it feels like triple 4k would drop my fps to much without dlss, and frame gen.
@@royfrmai Ok Ill give you a guide. Used CPUs are the same as brand new CPUs so long as someone hasn't overclocked them or made them run faster by shoving more power into them. Overclocking is not bad if its done correctly but accidents happen and sometimes you could potentially get someones burnt out used CPU if you buy second hand. It is rare though and in most cases a "burnt out" CPU will still be fine. As for how CPUs improve framerate. GPUs can render frames so long as the CPU can chug them out. Esport games like Counter Strike and Valorant are super fast to run on the GPU but to get higher framerates you will basically need a faster CPU. Thermal Throttling is when a processor or part of a computer gets too hot. Now instead of the part melting or exploding (Dont worry that wont happen unless something seriously bad happens), the part will slow itself down so it won't overheat. It just means that your performance is now throttled or slowed down because it is too hot and its protecting itself

GTAIV was a complete clustermuck when it was released on PC, the system req were absurd and the frame rates were atrocious on anything. The game was also only coded to use a max of 2 cpu cores and it still used DX9 instead of DX10. It absolutely hates modern hardware and you will tank in fps a lot, the best way to get it running (and many other older games) is to use DXVK. Simply drop two files into the games folder and you are done. DXVK to translate DX9 drawcall into Vulkan drawcalls and the game runs insanely well, so well in fact you will have to cap the fps because over a certain amount the games engine breaks like it does for GTAV.
If youre tight on money and want to experience a bunch of fantastic older games just buy a mid 2010s dell, put an older midrange gpu in it and have a great time!
This old games only need Raytracing and they hit games from today down to the bottom. In Fear we see our own shadow in EGO perspective. Even today we cant have it in every Shooter....

Doom 3 BFG Edition has a fps cap of 240. Only the GOG version of Doom 3 (and original) is stuck at 60 fps.

If you unlock fps in half life 2 config files by typing "fps_max 0" it goes up to 1000 fps

Some of those games really need the DXVK mod to run in Vulcan instead of broken with Direct X, particularly GTA IV

Just out of the box settings. Maybe I got lucky? I heard there’s a Vulcan mod, maybe I’ll try that sometime
You may get even higher frames with mod patches on GTA IV, I reach over the 100's with my 3080 at 4k.

Yep, I have a high refresh 1440p also. Just wanted to try 4K for this one to see how 4K could make an old game look good many years later
