First of all I really like all aspects of Rabi-Ribi a lot, the visual, the soundtrack, the gameplay and so on. I agree with you that the story isn't the most amazing piece of a literature and it can definitely be confusing but overall I enjoyed it. I didn't mind characters had some small talk before and after boss battles and players who feel like story isn't contributing anything to the game are able to skip whole cutscenes easily with just one button. I personally like cutesy stuff so the art, be it the characters or CGs, wasn't a turn-off for me. As for the soundtrack, I liked some songs more than the others but can't say I disliked any of them. I don't usually buy soundtracks for games but I just had to buy it for Rabi-Ribi. I understand people can have differences in taste so I don't have any problems with you having a different opinion about the story and visuals than I do.
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the gameplay of the game. About what you said about having limited healing items, how do you feel about the fact that on Bunny Extinction difficulty you are allowed to have only one of each different type of consumable? On the difficulty you played the game I think two donuts and two cakes should be more than enough to get through a boss battle. There are three types of healing items: gold carrot (100%), cake (70%), donut (20%). Even without the gold carrot you can heal up to 180% of Erina's health during a fight with 2 cakes and 2 donuts. I don't think there is nothing wrong with using consumables when you really need them but especially the boss battles are meant to be something you dodge through rather than power through with consumables.
I don't think I'm saying this without some weight in my words. My very first playthrough was on the normal difficulty and it was a challenge for me and I had to use consumables during boss fights. There was even a time when I had to load a previous save because I had used too many healing items during one boss and didn't have enough for the next one. What I'm saying is I wasn't good at the game when I started it but I got better at it and good enough to play it on hard, hell and even on bunny extinction difficulties. I'd also like to mention that in a 0% items playthrough, which allows only consumables, rainbow eggs and the bunny amulet, throughout most of the game you can't even restock your healing items at the shop because Miriam forces the speed boost item on you so you gotta make do with one cake and one donut as long as Miriam is at the shop.
As you pointed out the game is very non-linear. Getting the air dash while avoiding all Kotri fights makes you really think how to do it because green Kotri is one of the first bosses you encounter in chapter 1 if you leave the Rabi Rabi town to left. The non-linear part of the game and the map design were some of the things that really made me respect the game a lot more than I initially had. I actually didn't pay much attention to map design before my 0% playthrough because lack of items really makes you appreciate how block perfect some jumps are, how some hidden paths are designed in 0% playthrough in mind and how you can even get through the whole game without any items considering how you literally have to jump over some items, like the hammer, just to be able to proceed.
So while we may have our differences regarding the story and visuals, I'm glad we both appreciate the gameplay of Rabi-Ribi.

Reading your comment makes me wanna replay the game. That's how much I loved this game's gameplay. At the end of the day, people have different tastes. And that's what critics are. Just people. I know that what I say is just opinions, and I hope everyone knows that. But I'm glad you agree with me on gameplay (for the most part). I do wanna say that I definitely got better at the game than I was when I made this review (I also got better at making reviews, but that's another story).
Thank you so much for watching, and thank you for the feedback :)

@@SapphireBones I'd love to watch you replaying the game. If you have unlocked the speedrun mode then you wouldn't even have to worry about the story and the cutscenes.
You could perhaps try to get some of the achievements you don't have yet or go for a 0% playthrough, although I wouldn't recommend it above casual difficulty, if you haven't experienced it yet. Even on casual it can be quite challenging and tedious.
Aside from those there must be a lot of other things you could probably do. I don't know which difficulties you've unlocked or haven't played yet but it'd be nice to see you try things you haven't done or experienced yet.
According to Steam I have over 470 hours in the game. The game isn't just fun to play but it's also fun to watch others play it because of it's non-linearity. In chapter 1 you can never be sure where a player may go or what they will do and there is really no wrong or right path which makes each playthrough quite unique.

Looks fun in a Magic Knight Rayearth sort of way, but I agree. If I pop on a platformer I do it for gameplay. Great stories are, well, great, but I don't want to mash through walls of text in high frequency. Like, I said, it looks fun though!

    So you hate:
    Anime style.
    Cute, and Funny.
    Sex appeal.
    Pastel Colors.
    The only thing you liked:
    Generic up-scaling a character's power.
    The level design.
The common properties of the metroid/castlevaina games which this game clearly took inspiration from.
And the Boss aspect feels like it's from Megaman.
It seems that there could be other games you'd like with the exact same "meat" rather than annoying yourself over the superficial crap. I'm pretty sure there are games with better level design out there.

I LOVE cute and funny stuff, and I love sex appeal and pastel colors. I just don't think this game did any of these things correctly. Also, this review was 4 years ago, I have changed my views on anime styles. And I NEED to reiterate that the level design is THAT good. Even if this was the worst looking game ever (it's not), the level design is one of the best I've seen in decades.

The constant interruptions in gameplay by cutscenes and dialogue was so annoying but apart from that it's a great metroidvania

i think the visuals fit the game, i WILL agree, the story is incredibly weak, i didnt pick up on some things you did but, yeah everytime i play this i skip cutscenes 1 because i do not want to be seen playing an H looking ass game and 2 because the dialogue's not even good.
the rest is okay by me.

Have you watched the video? Or did you just read the title and got angry? I literally say it's one of the best Metroidvanias I've ever played, and that I love it. The only things I didn't like about it are the writing and art, but the gameplay, AS I SAID IN THE VIDEO, is amazing.

I appreciate the art style because I'm a pig, metroidvanias are great and I always wanted to get into bullet hell games.
Seems like the game for me.

I can understand your critique of what you refer to as the game's "bland" visuals, though considering the fact that the overall game design, graphics and programming were all done by one person (namely, GemaYue), I am forgiving of the game's shortcomings in these aspects.
GemaYue's focus was clearly on gameplay and mechanics, and in that regard he's made some of the best action-platforming I've ever experienced in videogames. I particularly love how many meaningful additions there are in difficulty on the higher difficult modes. Hard difficulty introduces new patterns. Bunny Extinction and Hell introduces hyper modes for bosses when they're at low HP. They take less damage and their patterns speed up. And after every NG+ cycle/loop, the bullets for all enemies become noticeably faster (and stack per NG+ cycle, so NG+2 is faster than NG+1 and will require you to change strategies like using the bunny amulet to avoid those attacks that on lower cycles you could just physically dodge normally).
You should seriously check out some of the Bunny Extinction "no damage" boss runs people have uploaded. The fact that some of the individual bosses can go up to 10+ minutes makes the act of beating them without getting damaged even once all the more impressive.
In terms of your thoughts on the soundtrack, I have to disagree, since tracks like Golden Riverbank, Warp Destination, Sky High Bridge and MR are songs I still listen to this day. But then again, music is 100% subjective, so a million people will have a million different tastes in music. To each their own in this specific regard.
Finally, I'm glad you recognized how insanely well-done the game's level design and non-linearity is with that section in your video at 12:48. Anyone who looks at this game's achievements/trophies will understand that this game isn't messing around at all, and will be a significant time investment if you want to fully 100% the game.
I hope that if Rabi Ribi 2 gets made, GemaYue gets a better budget and people to help him out to max out on the visual production values this game lacks.

This review is more than 4 years old, and I'd like to think that I've grown, both as a person, and as a critic over these 4 years. If I were to re-review this game today, there would be quite a bit I'd say differently. I do feel like I was too harsh on the game's visuals and music back then, and I still stand by what I said about it being one of the best Metroidvanias out there, if not THE best. I still, to this day, think it's a fantastic game, and I would love to play Rabi Ribi 2 if it ever comes out.

The game visual is not bland tho, Along with the difficulty of each map and the art design using sprite is so nice. it has the visual of a 2d sprites so the movement is just what i expected it to be, to call it bland literally mean that every game using sprite are all bland.
The story is something to work on but over all, the game is so good.

    • @SapphireBones

We can agree to disagree on the game's looks. I've played plenty of games that use sprites, and I think they look gorgeous. But this one's sprites are just bland. Like if I compare this game's art to, let's say, Pizza Tower's art, Pizza Tower just looks way more interesting.
However, I do need to point out that I LOVE this game. I think it's a fantastic game, so even if I dislike the art, I still think it's a brilliant game, and since this review, I have played it 2 times. I love it.

    • @Anya-Anyaaa

@@SapphireBones I do agree tho but pretty much all sprite look alike because they use the same texture, games that use 2D sprite would always look the same. It's either the color used are light or heavy, that is pretty much it. As for the level design each level are unique to one another so maybe what you are looking at is the lack of mechanics in each stage but that alone actually would make any game not worth to play. And we enjoyed rabi ribi because like what you said, it is delicious.
Each level has its colorful art which alone proved that the stages for each level is not bland.
i like the review actually, it's just the bland part won't make sense. And the character movement part which is normal for any game that uses 2D sprite running in 60 fps. The gameplay is smooth and responsive and enjoyable.
