  • With a special Friday bonus episode, I sit down with my Seiko SLA023 to discuss my current watch temptations and the reasons I must interrogate those temptations for several months before adding another watch to a crowded collection. My novel The Secret Life of Watch Addicts is available on Amazon Kindle:

Totally agree on this watch desire interogation thing. Took me 3-4 years to finally pull the trigger on the Explorer II. If the desire is still there even after all that time, then I’ll know it’ll be a keeper. I can observe the new watch releases with ease now, I dont crave the latest and greatest no more now that I have my it watch. Tbh It helped that it took me quite a long while to save up for it though 😂.

As i got 7 watches "watch collection" i face a problem, seems like if i buy any more watch they will weaken the connection from me to every single of my watches. Not that i dont want a new watches, but my wrist is fully booked for every single time.

Hello Mr. McMahon! I'm the guy that owned that Seiko LX spring drive you saw at Mimo's/Random Rob meet up.
The watch you're discussing is the SBDB037 and there's only 200 of them out there. (I did spend more than $3200 though.)
There is also a version that is not limited but does not have the gilt second hand nor the Seiko cermet bezel insert, the SBDB021 and those are selling for less than $4k on Chrono24.
Also, if you're going to seek out a SBDB037, be sure the watch seller has one in stock as many will list the watch but still need to source one to ship out!
It makes me grin when you bring up that watch because it is still one of my favorite 2 watches in my collection. Thanks for the continued phenomenal content!

Todd, that was awesome meeting you there. So you had the rare one, the one I love the most. That is a keeper. Wear it in good health. I'll see you at the next meet-up hopefully. Best.

Waiting 6 months is an excellent way to gauge how badly you want to make a purchase. Impulse buying often leads to regret, or at least the hassle of a return or reselling. One way to think about it is budgeting. If you have $100 a month to spend on watches, then the Frogman is 4 months worth of purchases for you. You can even buy it immediately and not buy anything else for those months. I opted for a Rangeman at half the price for all my cosplay needs.

The purplish t-shirt looks good on ya Mr.McMahon , you should wear more colours ! Also I think the a spring drive watch is going to be one of those watches thats gonna ruin your watch collecting journey with setting such a high standard for the movement with its accuracy, the mesmerising smooth sweep that no other watch is gonna measure upto it ever !

Temptation as an incitement to sin whether by persuasion or by the offer of some good or pleasure, not. Thorough interrogation, nay prudence and fortitude, and dare I include temperance. Enjoy the fruits of your labor.

I have that Citizen, the blue one. My vacation watch(one of..), it has been with me in Austriax2, Italyx2, Slovenia, Hungaryx3, and Germany. Two weeks at a time in every country- doesn’t have a single scratch on it.

I'm lucky as the only watch which could tempt me right now does not exist. It would be a Seiko SPB143 with a solar quartz movement.

For every watch I’ve bought, I’ve had at least 5 other watches that gave me the “watch flu,” they turn out to be those fleeting desires that come and go.

As a fellow watch anxiety sufferer, the cost and maintenance of a spring drive would be too much for me. Happy with a GS 9F quartz and a couple of automatics.

    Two in a day 😄!
When it comes to a new watch, take your time. Both of the ones that you mentioned will still be there in 3-6 months, and it'll give you plenty of time to decide if you really want those timepieces.

Hey Jeffrey McMahon, I have a few spring drive watches and one of them is almost 10 years old. It's the SBGA029 Grand Seiko Diver with the raised Seiko logo seated proudly on top. It has been running almost non-stop for 10 years straight, never serviced, and even till this day it's keeping impeccable time(+/- 1s a day). I've done some research on the Spring Drive movement and they allegedly experience a lot less friction and wear and tear when compared to a traditional mechanical movement, mainly due to the escapement being spinning perpetually, only slowed down by an electro magnetic brake, rather than ticking away. That's what gives the Spring Drives the iconic second hand glide. Also bear in mind that watch has been with me almost everywhere in the Navy, diving, swimming, doing carpentry, the list goes on. It's really an incredible movement designed to last literally a lifetime and I'm pretty confident that you would only need to service the movement if something really bad goes wrong, like swimming with it without the crown being screwed down. All the best with your interrogation!

Dear Friend, I have been wearing G-Shocks since 1985. Be mindful, this will only get better, or worse, depending on how you want to look at it ;) G-Shocks are very addictive. They are amazing.
The SLA023 is an amazing watch, top tier materials and movement. But I am under the spell of my Samurai. I realize that it does not have what your SLA series has, but as you said earlier, what will the watch world be in 20 years ? Your SLA will be fantastic looking, shiny, almost new, with the materials used, as it should !
Mine will be worn, and show a lifetime of wear and tear. The aluminum bezel insert may or may not be there ... the mineral crystal will be scratched, the dial will most likely be faded, and the crazy horse leather strap I put on it will remind me of my old leather flight jacket.
It would be fun to bump into you in 20 years to compare the two, great stories, plenty of battle scars.
    Be well

I bought a nice used Seiko, which needed some work and for 85 dollars I think it paid off. Though, I would perhaps just go buy a new Seiko then I do not have to worry about servicing etc.

I've been collecting for over 10 years. Always a small collection. I finally succumbed to a GShock this January. Couldn't cope, sent it straight back. It didn't feel like wearing a watch. Plus, fatally, I bought it for the "specs": multiband 6, Solar, etc. I've never before bought based on specs. A total disaster.
I'm a big GS fan and have owned two and currently have a Quartz GMT SBGN029G. I'm not convinced by Spring drive either. It has a quartz regulator, so just buy a GS Quartz

I would not bother with Spring Drive. Just get a proper high precision quartz. Spring Drive is like those lemonade flavoured beers, not really a beer and not exactly lemonade. Mechanical or quartz, both have their legitimacy. Grand Seiko has proper quartz powered pieces, I'd rather look at those. (those 9F movements)

"oh, but what about that smooth sweeping seconds hand of the Spring Drive ? That's so dreamy"
      > yeah, just like the seconds hand sweep on my Apple Watch.

McMahon, if u go for a frogman, make sure u check out the gwfd1000 over the gwf1000, both are great but the d1000 has sapphire and better compass. Also maybe time to sell a couple of pieces and get the lx spring drive? U only live once.👍🏻😜

So Jeff, how many watches out of the hundreds you have owned over the years have k actually been serviced? In all the years I’ve been subscribed, I can only remember one and it was required due to poor timekeeping. If that is true, then how likely is it that if in the off chance that would own a Grand Seiko, would you even have it long enough to need a service? I love you man, but your track record betrays you here, just a little bit. FOS syndrome: fear of service costs, even if the probability of incurring costs for a watch obsessive is exceedingly low.

    • @JeffreyMcMahon
      @JeffreyMcMahon  Місяць тому

You are correct. I had only one service for my Captain Willard and yes you're correct: FOS is largely in my head, not connected to reality.
