  • Antiquing...thrifting...treasure-hunting; Rajiv takes this activity very seriously, having objects in his life that are beautiful, useful and also meaningful all at the same time. Rajiv's home is made up of a mix of both new and old things - furniture, tools, utensils and linens that have been carefully acquired over the years. These objects were often made with pride, care and attention to form, giving them timeless beauty.
Sifting through antiques-or junk-can be overwhelming if you're not accustomed to the process, but today Rajiv shares the approach to his favorite leisure activity when he's out of town.

When you dropped that bowl, I literally yelled, "OH SHIT!!!". I love antiquating so much that I'm in the process of open a vintage/antique shop. I just unpacked an entire box of various sizes and colors of Yellowware bowls (about 25 pieces) that I purchased from an estate auction for $20. I didn't know much about them so was thrilled (once again) to watch your video. For anyone reading this who'd like to start collecting, estate sales and online auctions are a great way to get started also. Often the prices are much less because people overlook items. One of my best recent finds is a collection of 75 pieces of 1930's uranium glass (that glows under a black light) that I got for $100. Oh geez...I could go on and on and on...

Incidentally, McCoy pottery is one of my favorites to find because I propagate houseplants, then pot them in a little McCoy and it's a perfect housewarming gift. Also, I think it's important to think outside of the box when it comes to how things can be used. Crystal serving trays are so pretty to display jewelry in, and a ceramic cookie jar will sometimes make a good plant pot. Get creative!

I was lucky enough to have a grandmother from New York born in 1910. My African-American family was from New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania since they were colonies. She gave me old kitchenware and furniture. She had some neat silverware that is stainless on the business end with silver plated handles. I bought several pieces of silver plated tableware on my own too. I don’t have any sterling silver, like Rajiv, but my silver plated flatware is very beautiful and ornate. Now I see why the servants were incessantly polishing the silver in the movies.

I'm really loving your videos Rajiv. Breaking that repro bowl is one of the most hilarious things I have ever seen! Demonstrates (although maybe not intentionally) its brittleness and cheapness. In contrast, the old bowl was made to last and would have survived that fall. As you quoted your german friend in another video, "we are too poor to buy cheap things." I've been on a similar path since I was a teenager and I'm now 65. I have purged things as I learned more, and eventually lost interest in some former collecting obsessions, but still have kept many pieces -- even small weird little objects which are important to me which embody the memories of my life. I've never tired of the hunt and seeing your videos feels so familiar -- like finding a new friend you have "known" forever. Thank you!

I grew up in a house with antiques and my home is the same. We refer to items by the name of the person they came from (in the case of inherited items.) It helps us remember those who came before us and gives the items we use every day a personality and a place in our home. Thank you for taking your viewers along on your treasure hunt!

I didn’t pick them up but did check the price ($125.00) but I decided to not purchase them yet. If they are still there I will take a better look before purchasing.
What I did purchase I took home and researched them. This was my first venture into antique shopping. Now I’m hooked! It’s amazing what you can repurpose to a room. I’m currently remodeling my guest bathroom and the pieces I found are gorgeous to merge the new to the old. Thank you this has been a lot of great information.
I gasped when the bowl dropped.

I love old ceramic mixing bowls, especially striped ones. I went the practical route and bought stainless mixing bowls with silicone-coated bottoms several years ago. They were inexpensive, won’t scratch my surfaces, are easy to clean, and I never have to worry about damaging them. I can always look at the ceramic ones on the internet. 🥰

I can literally watch Rajiv's videos several times (specifically the antiquing ones) and learn something new each time. He is such a fountain of information. His energy and passion are so infectious and endearing respectively. I literally take note of all his recommendations and treat them as gospel.

Watched the first 3 minutes and already have to comment. Thank you Rajiv for your insight on how this is "work." I go into a mode of following my instincts, scanning, evaluating, feeling things with my hands, getting ideas, taking notes sometimes. It's a flow state for me, but maybe less social for my friends!

You are always so calm and serene! When I go in to shops like that, my mind goes wacky, seeing this, then that! I wish I could shop calmly like you. After you broke the bowl and then picked up the prize of the day, the DOG bowl, I kept thinking, Hold on to that bowl firmly! Thank You so much for taking us along and teaching us what and how to look for treasures.

Haha!!! You described EXACTLY how I feel when I go antiquing too...the constant scanning for a whole mental catalog of items is serious business. I HATE to go with anyone and totally love going alone. YT has been recommending your videos for a few months now, and I finally clicked on one...so glad I did! The algorithm knew what it was talking about 😁

I antique the same way. I have gotten so excited about things I've found that I never went in looking for. Those are my favorite things. And when the price is good, or on sale even better. And the memories you get from seeing something from your childhood are priceless.

Rajiv, here’s another idea: when one steps I to a place like that, full of old useful and decorative things, one is making a journey through history and, in a way, is transported back in time. One doesn’t need to collect- one can simply hold, look at, learn about, and enjoy these items. I’ll go just for the time travel experience, and if I find something wonderful, insight take it home without the collection aspect. One beautiful pot can live next to one gorgeous tea cup and one lovely spoon. ❤

I love your approach to shopping for everyday items like this. I do the same thing when ever i can. My apartment isnt big enough to have "regular" and "good" versions of everything side by side, so i want the good versions only, when possible. Today im going to look for a nice shovel or scoop for repotting plants. If i cant find one i like, i just go without until i find the one. I did this with all my dishes and now I love all my plates and bowls and cups, even though it meant i didnt have a full set for a long time.
One thing i do is bring a list with me when im browsing antique shops and thrift stores, just to remind myself of the things im generally looking for.

I love seeing my sweet mama's "Farmer & His Wife" (by M. A. Hadley, since 1939) round serving plate in the far right corner! Company closed the business end of last year - but then someone in their Kentucky town, bought the factory and kept it running! I had been hoping I could sell some of the extra pieces we don't need, but prices won't be going up now. I do adore having my parents' wedding plate, with their names and the date, hanging over my old stove. My parents were treasures, and now I have their treasures. Of course I'd rather have them still, but that is life.

And upstairs, when Rajiv was enjoying telling us about the DOG bowl, far to the right almost off the screen, is the small footed fish plate in my mother's pattern, that I wish we still had, as it always sat on the kitchen table!

Having decluttered my packratted home this past Spring, I can't help thinking about where these beautiful, old objects spent 100 years to be in such good shape!?!! I would have to guess that many of them were in the back of a cupboard, in an unused pantry top cupboard, in a box inherited from a Great Aunt in an attic, or in a barn or basement, etc! My mother just moved out of the house my maternal grandmother lived in, and i have saved old things because they mean something to me. Rajiv, seeing your apartment tour with the harp about 4 days ago, including your closet and cupboard above your stove, and the quilt handmade out of your family's saris... you were speaking my language. Here's the saying that seems to apply:
A friend is someone who sings the song in your heart when you have forgotten it
