    A good idea as it can be grown indoors over the winter months when the natural forage don't grow 💜

    I grow organic red wheat grass for my herd. I soak the seeds overnight then rinse. I grow mine without soil in a 2 piece tray that is about 1-1/2 inches tall. The medium is jute fiber about a 1/4 thick. I can have a full tray in 2 weeks. I will cut the grass on the first round and let them ransack it on the second round. They love to rip it out and eat every last bit except the seed husk. Hence I went soilless. The whole thing comes out to about 2 USD for a 10 inch by 10 inch tray. In the store a 3 inch pot of wheat grass goes for 3 USD. I have 4 trays and rotate thru them. It is also been a life saver as it works wonders for ill guinea pig to encourage them to keep eating.

    I've been growing wheatgrass for a while too.
    It has the problems that the guinea pigs will want way more of it and most of my indoor garden now is wheatgrass.
    I obey my guinea pig masters.

      Sure beats the 4+ months it takes for my parsley to get big enough to pick without killing it.

    I am so happy I found this I feel like a complete amateur Guinea pig owned human.. I’m pretty sure I know the answer to this being that sunlight isn’t important but I also didn’t hear it mentioned so thought there was no harm in double checking.. should I keep it in sunlight at any point.. also it loses its nutritional value after 5 weeks so I should start over at that point?

    I have one clipper and three root pullers. If it was only Poppy Poptart it would a nice tidy regrowing but instead it turns into a push pull drag dirt party so I just clip the grass for them.

    This is wonderful, thank you for the video! I’ve been wanting to try this for my piggies, and use the water from my fish tank to water/fertilize it. Perhaps I’ll experiment with both tap water and fish tank water and see how each grows! It’s always nice to recycle.

    • @suzannec6817
      @suzannec6817 3 роки тому +1

      Does the fish tank water have anything in it to prevent algae growing?
      I would also make sure any fish poop was well and truly rinsed off the grass before giving it to the piggies.
      Their little tums might get upset.
      I am going to try taking my piggies poop, swirling it in water and then using that as a fertilizer boost.

    • @nataliebarroga6682
      @nataliebarroga6682 3 роки тому +1

      @@suzannec6817 Nothing to prevent algae is added to the water - I do add some fertilizers though since I have live plants that grow in my tanks and absorb the nutrients that algae would usually try to grow from.
      There’s not much poop that comes out with the water change actually either, since the plants absorb that through their roots too. It’s just generally nutrient and nitrate rich water.
      But yes, I would water the grasses roots and let everything be clean and dry before feeding, I wouldn’t want to give fishy water soaked grass to the piggies. That doesn’t sound tasty or like a good idea at all.
      I’ve watered some of my yard plants and grass with the fish water before and they seem to enjoy it so far.

    Amazing! Can it be used as basic food instead of dry hay? Pet stores in my city do not sell hay 😢

    • @GuineaPigStuff
      @GuineaPigStuff  День тому

      Guinea pig love grass but a variety which can offer so much more than just wheat grass. This is perfect for growing for them but they do have an 80% intake of grasses/hays. Hay is just dried grass. I would encourage you to go out and collect a variety and them home dry it where you can then always have it on hand. Growing it in large amounts to match what they eat would take a lot of space and time

    I’ve been growing wheat grass with just water but I’m thinking I might try with soil since there is more nutritional value. Do you have to worry about mold when you grow in dirt? Is there anything you can do to prevent mold that is Guinea pig safe?

    Can you grow it indoors or does it need a lot of sun

    • @GuineaPigStuff
      @GuineaPigStuff  3 роки тому

      Yes where you have sunshine - so a window sill etc would be fine.

    • @suzannec6817
      @suzannec6817 3 роки тому

      These were grown in mid-winter Australia, so not huge amounts of sunshine. The more sunshine the quicker they will grow ... and obviously they will need more water. A little sun is needed for photosynthesis. If you just want to do sprouts, then no sunshine is needed.

    I been growing week grass for about 4 months outside my apartment windows but recently it stopped growing or is slowly growing. Is there something I can do to help my wheat grass grow again?

    • @suzannec6817
      @suzannec6817 3 роки тому +1

      Wheat seeds run out of oomph after a while.
      You need sunshine, water and soil fertility to grow wheat-grass well.
      Wheat has been selectively bred for thousands of years to grow fast and have lots of seeds. So it is not like grasses in the wild, which live for a longer time but produce fewer seeds.
      I think you might have to start again with new seeds and fresh soil/potting mix.

    • @renmel1044
      @renmel1044 3 роки тому

      Wheat type of fertilizer would you recommend is safe for guinea pigs on wheat grass?

      Awesome - I think all answered below.

    • @suzannec6817
      @suzannec6817 3 роки тому +2

      @@renmel1044 Pretty much anything organic ... including your furbabies poops swirled in some water. But note that for more than two thousand years wheat has been grown to develop quickly with lots of seeds (for us to make flour), and will not last more than a couple of months at most as viable wheat grass.

    my experience is when fed often, wheat grass causes urinary stones. Do anything you can to avoid stones.

    • @GuineaPigStuff
      @GuineaPigStuff  3 роки тому

      HI Robin there is no correlation to that at all. If you feel uncomfortable with wheat grass you can use this same methodology with all grass seeds .

    • @suzannec6817
      @suzannec6817 3 роки тому

      I agree that stones are to be avoided!!! Wheatgrass does have a lot of calcium, so I did some reading and found this:
      "Wheatgrass contains compounds that increase urine flow, which allows stones to pass more easily and reduces your risk of developing kidney stones. Wheatgrass is also high in nutrients and antioxidants that can help cleanse our urinary tract and kidneys.
      28 Nov 2019"
      The wheatgrass as shown in the video is meant to be a treat, and not a main part of their diet ... so feed it as a treat.
      There are a lot of other benefits from the amino acids etc.
      If you know of any research on this, could you please give me the reference?

    • @cherylhmackie
      @cherylhmackie 3 роки тому +1

      There is very little evidence that calcium is what is causing stones. It was a theory, however, despite people doing a low calcium diet guinea pigs still get stones. There is new thinking that not giving guineapigs calcium results in them not being able to remove deposits from their body, that calcium helps with their removal. Lyn's thinking that a varied diet is really what we should aim for.

    • @suzannec6817
      @suzannec6817 3 роки тому +1

      @@cherylhmackie Absolutely! There are so many interactive effects (who in the past knew that having orange juice with spinach would increase the amount of iron that was consumable by humans?)
      However, I have looked at barley grass as an alternative as it has lower calcium and pretty much as many benefits as wheat grass.
      Thank you for keeping the scientific debate going!!!

    • @bb7682
      @bb7682 2 роки тому

      I have been told by my vet that a lot of stones actually has more to do with genetics over their diet
