I don't like what they did with it, but still I recognize the artistry in it. Plus, I'll always have the Kate original to go back too. I think people should cover Kate more.
I think its an interesting cover. They didnt just do a replay of the song. They took it and completely ran with it, interpreting it in their own, unique way. Its an original interpretation and has a soul of its own.
You're right, it's probably closer to an "interpretation" than a cover, although it is closer than the "cover" of "There Goes A Tenner" by the J. Davis Trio at the same concert - which is my favorite track from this project.
I too have seen my scarlet life in Iowa and was blown away bu the show. the sound recording on this one as well as it not being their own is why they don't sound up to par. Believe me! these guys know how to put on a show if your into something more ethereal from time to time. Seen MSL like 5 times actually at a place called stebs on the hill in Cedar falls, Ia.
They're voices were not horrible, but I think the feeling and overall meaning that the original song had was lost with this interpretation. I really like the playfulness of the original as well, a large portion of Kate's artistry is in her movements.
I'm a huge Kate fan, and I loved it. But you're right, it's far more successful on the CD than live - which was true of the Cocteau Twins as well. Something this musically complex is hard to pull off live, especially in the context of a show with 6 other performers.
@TheZapzupNZ Yeah, takes guts, but they have something with the song. It just didn't seem to all go together, like at 1:07 it just seemed to break unkindly from the previous minute of performance. Could use a little refining?
I'm not much into them, but they get credit for trying something different - though neither as different as the J Davis Trio's cover of "There Goes A Tenner" - nor anywhere near as successful.
I understand the you comment, I comment, I really do. Not sure where you got that I don't like anyone objecting to my comments, that's just a weird thing to say. I thought "raped" got my point across pretty well actually, and yeah, it is cruel when it's actual rape in the rape sense, jeez., I was using it in the metaphorical sense, what's wrong with you? But hey, I think I've struck a chord, yay! Anyway, onwards and upwards friend.
@elephunt78 they sure did do what you said in your comment, could'nt agree with you more.i hope they don't try and do another kate bush cover, maybe they should hav stayed in their bedrooms and sang in their hairbrushs instead, ugggggggggghhhh that was painful to listen to listen too
And I was saying your comment was harsh. You comment, I comment, that's the way it works. You don't want to read anyone objecting to your comment, don't make comments. Your post is a collection of logical fallacies: strawmen, false equivalencies. "Raped" is harsh and, frankly, cruel. If I had said "praise only", I would have deleted your comment rather than replying to it.
I do have a better version, by Kate Bush. My words were definitely harsh (boo hoo)but totally necessary. I'm not an all-out hater of covers, some covers are wonderful and bring originality while keeping the heart of the original alive. This is youtube. This performance was posted for people to comment on. I didn't see the "comments of praise only" disclaimer anywhere.
I think it's quite clear what I was thinking. Actually, the artists paying tribute is my cup of tea, but I felt it was executed very poorly here. I liked the idea of the concert, but was hugely disappointed by it. The whole point of being able to leave comments is to leave opinions, is it not? Sorry, if my opinion isn't a positive one, but if all opinions just kiss the asses of the artists involved I see very little point in reading them.
I've been looking at this and others from the same concert. I'm not one of these "don't attempt to cover Kate" fans, but seriously, what were these people thinking. It's all a load of old crap. This whole concert=bollocks.

i love my scarlet life .they were a great band.put out some great cds.i like this
kate fans hated this but i actually like it. the cd is really worth getting . much better on the cd. nsounds more cocteau twins on the cd

Ditto on the Placebo cover. Futureheads does a really nice cover of "Hounds of Love" to the naysayers.
Their cover is really cool. I agree that the cd version is a lot better. This is coming from a Kate fan too.

Ambitious. Who but Barry White could pull it off rightously?
@FireRupee As far as I know, the song was only performed live twice, and this is the second. I do know the version on CD is dramatically better.
@TheZapzupNZ Yeah, takes guts, but they have something with the song. It just didn't seem to all go together, like at 1:07 it just seemed to break unkindly from the previous minute of performance. Could use a little refining?
I love the innovation but I’m wary of the pitch issues.
And you have a better version? I'll admit that this was a very ambitious Kate song to attempt, but your comment is unnecessarily harsh.
I'm not much into them, but they get credit for trying something different - though neither as different as the J Davis Trio's cover of "There Goes A Tenner" - nor anywhere near as successful.

I prefer the original :)
my ears are bleeding

no!
it's droney baloney! :)
I see what they are trying to do, but this is truly wretched. Sorry.
This is crap. I really love Kate's music and Suspended in Gaffa big. But this is only uninspired howling.
EGHADS!!! Terrible!
wow, seriously crap
they raped the soul of the original track and left it bleeding in a ditch. Missed the point completely. Fail.
Sorry but this is just hideous. Yikes. Suspended in judgement.
