Hi Rick.... this episode with Tallulah Bankhead was one of my all-time favorites. The writing and directing was genius and very much in tune with the entire run of I Love Lucy from 1951 forward. Many years ago I met Miss Ball at the Museum of Broadcasting in 1984 and had the pleasure of speaking to her. During my visit and thereafter communicating with her secretary Wanda Clark and other close friends Rick Carl and Tom Watson I found your story to be exceptionally true and close to what I have heard over the years. I cannot tell you what a service you have done for the I Love Lucy community are fans as we haven't had anyone with such a voice who is as articulate and on the money with facts. It is my honor to listen to your videos and to listen in on your live chats. Thank you...Robert... Please Everyone... " BE HOPEFUL!!"....
❤
I love the way miss Bankhead pronounced the word "darling". I watched the episode yesterday. One of my favorites.
This episode is among the best of all. Tallulah was as hysterically funny as the rest of the cast. BE HOPEFUL!
This must have been an interesting match since some other guest stars such as Edie Adams said Lucy was not the easiest person to work with either. Tallulah and Lucy? I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall during that experience, lol....
After watching both Feud: Bette & Joan as well as Being the Ricardos, I'd love to see Nicole Kidman and Susan Sarandon respectively as Lucy and Tallulah for THAT mini series.
...this is literally my most favorite episode of the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour...
...simply hilarious!...
one of the best episodes of Lucy and Desi comedy hour : be hopeful
In the early 90s there was a laser disc set (YES, LASER DISC) of I Love Lucy. On the last side of the second disc there were clips from the Comedy Hour with commentary from various people like Marjorie Lord and Lucy. When they showed the Tallulah clip they played an excerpt from a seminar Lucy had gone to for young talent. She said that she was in awe of Tallulah and never thought Desi would get her to do the show. When he did she was thrilled of course but scared of Tallulah at the same time. (Hard to imagine Lucy scared of ANYONE!!) She said much of what you said here, Rick about the drinking and never getting a complete rehearsal out of her. At the filming Tallulah was perfect as you said but Lucy said the she was so nervous that SHE blew some of her own lines!! She said that years later she ran into Tallulah in New York and Tallulah said "Dahling, do you remember when we did that show together?" Lucy said she responded, "Yes, I remember but I don't know how the hell YOU remember!!" I still have that set and I'm glad because I have never seen the same clips or commentaries on another collection since then. Thanks, Rick!!
Didn't mean to run on so long. Hope I didn't bore you. "When Miss Bankhead is bored, Miss Bankhead will let you know."
We're the laser disk the real big dvds? Back in the 8th a neighbor had dvds the size of a record. I was a teen and thought how cool.
@JKFilmsNewsPartyFan ...I think you're referring to RCA Select-a-Vision, an analog video format on vinyl disc...
...on the other hand, Laser Video Disc is an example of an early digital video format, I believe...
May you post some of those clips? I can’t seem to find it anywhere😔I lost them all in a house fire a decade ago
I Love Lucy! As a little tot, maybe 5 years old, I remember coming in from outside every late morning, to catch I Love Lucy reruns. I am 62 years old and STILL Love Lucy. Be happy, and be hopeful! 😘
Wow, you are such a dedicated fan
well, she and the show are both simply terrific and timelessly enjoyable.
This was the best Comedy Hour episode. Tallulah Bankhead was hilarious! I loved it
I came to this video late, but so enjoyed it! Tallulah was bigger than life and 'containing' her was impossible. I once had the pleasure of being in the audience of the Merv Griffin Show when Tallulah was a guest. I was only 14, but I thought to myself, what a divine creature! Her and Lucy together =Heaven!
The Tallulah episode is one of my favorites. Great info on the story behind the scenes. I've watched "I Love Lucy" ever since the show first aired. It was a ritual with my family every week. I'm now turning 73 April 6th and I STILL LOVE LUCY! BE HOPEFUL !
I hope you are well and happy! 😊❤
This has Always been my Favorite Lucy Desi Hour episode! I have read elsewhere that Ms. BANKHEAD was a bit of a hassle, but overall gave an amazing performance! BE HOPEFUL!!!
Bette Davis would have been interesing, but having Bankhead was also interesting considering their rivalry. I always heard that what Bankhead said was not that Desi was fat, but that he was unhappy, and self conscious of thinking he was fat. Also, she loved fried chicken. At the dinner fried chicken was served, the newly introduced Banquet TV dinner chicken. Bankhead allegedly said it was the best chicken she had ever had, and can be seen actually eating it. It always bugged me how they left out the part where she explains her strawberry allergies at dinner when they released the DVD sets. Terrible oversight considering all the other efforts. It made the later reaction that took place during the PTA stage play make absolutely no sense.
For me, this was the finest moment of the "I Love Lucy" cast and crew! Regardless of how difficult Tallulah was with Lucy and Desi, she not only came through, this was the funniest of all episodes in Lucille Ball's tv shows...and that's saying a lot!
Thank you for posting this episode! Will you be posting my 2nd favorite "Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" episode, the one with Danny Thomas and his tv family moving in with the Ricardos? That is hysterical! Great ensemble acting from everyone and great writing!
"The PT what?"
This episode makes everything worth it. It is a must-watch for EVERYONE and is a testament to old school Hollywood humor and glamour. Who cares about the in-fighting? The product was sublime!
Rick, your videos on this channel are always a delight to watch. As I have said before, I watched the I Love Lucy episodes when they first aired (yes, I'm getting old). I was just a little kid and they aired past my bedtime, but I would sneak down the hall into the living room and lay on the floor behind my Mom and Dad and watch the TV from afar. Never thought my parents knew I was there, but years later, as an adult with kids of my own, my Dad said they always knew I was there watching from my giggles. BE HOPEFUL!
So glad you enjoy my content, Kevin!
That's cute! Nice parents
At the end of the day, it’s always refreshing to know that despite all the behind the scenes shenanigans, all the actors were consummate professionals when it came to getting the job done. Be hopeful!
Very very true
When I was in Japan, watching "The Lucy Show", Lucy facing Viv, she has grabbed both of Viv's wrists, with both of her hands she violently shakes Viv's arms back and forth , Viv's body also shakes and hystercially shouting out in Japanese, it looked like she was shouting out, "Help me Viv! You just gotta help me! I really did it this time! Will you help me please! I'm begging you! PLEASE!" I didn't understand a single word but I was laughing SO HARD I felt GREAT! Oh God Lucy and Vivian ... I miss you two so much. Both of you were(and remain) a very FANTASTIC part of my wonderful childhood( I am 61 yrs. old). Be Hopeful.
this is one of my favorite episodes on the Lucy and Desi comedy hour
Chris Canale telulla and Richard deacan the best out of all the celebrety guest Lucy had. Gotta add William Holden was quite good too .
yes William Holden on I Love Lucy
Tallulah is the best brilliant actress of stage and this eposide
One of my favorites of the Lucy Desi comedy hour! My favorite line: "I've already been in one of your home made jams, darling"
My favorite line, Lucy - I've been thrown out of better homes than this!, Tullula - you haven't been in better homes!
@@studivan That was hilarious!
Rick, I'd put my money on Desi's account of what happened.
Wonderful video. This one of my favorite episodes. I really enjoyed learning the history elements behind this episode. Whatever may have happened in the production process; it really turned out to be a wonderful episode. Thanks for another great video.
Agree, all in all, Brian!
This is such a great post Rick! You're so right about these actors, all of them were such professionals that no matter what went on during rehearsals, when show time came they were all amazing. :) Be Hopeful!
The best is yet to come!!!!!
Another great video. I always liked the Lucy/Desi comedy hour this episode included. My favorite though is Lucy Makes Room for Danny. I always preferred the episodes where they stayed at the Connecticut house over all the travel episodes from this era. Be Hopeful!
Great channel, Rick. If not for growing up with I Love Lucy and watching it every day over my 55 years, life would be less joyful. I keeps me smiling and hopeful every day. Be Hopeful!
Awesome perspective!
I know that's right
Amazing FACTS man! Another great episode. Please keep posting. HOPING your channel grows a thousand a day.
BE HOPEFUL!
Also, I already have that complete first season. It’s a great one!!!!!
Hi! I had to watch this episode lady night and I noticed 3 things I’d like to point out. 1) what happened to Lucy’s new furniture remember she bought the coffee table with the lazy Susan- I don’t see that anymore.
2) when Lucy call Tullulah on the phone for the first time it appears tullulah is sitting in front of the Ricardo’s dining room table sans table with closed curtains. You can even note the half door lock behind Tullalahs left shoulder. 3) it looks like the stage for the play is simply the Ricardo’s living room with a curtain pulled over the fire place and new finishing over the walls. Thought this was cool, what do you think? BE HOPEFUL👍🏻
tallulah was one of a kind and she should always be remembered! Loved her dearly!
This was a great video. Your videos are always great, Rick, and I really look forward to them. I especially like at end of each video when you say
Be Hopeful!
Love everything I Love Lucy since I was a little girl watching with my dear Grandma. 38 this month and still watch most every day. Nothing will ever compare to Lucy. Appreciate your hard work Rick, enjoy your videos and live chats when I can catch them. BE HOPEFUL! 😎
Thanks so much!
I once read a book about a cat doctor who made house calls and Miss Bankhead was one of his clients. To paraphrase his opinion of her, "She was a wonderful person, when you didn't want to strangle her."
I liked the part in Talulah’s kitchen, where Lucy mocked her, and said, mu ha ha Ha dahling. I wish they would’ve wrote Tallulah end of the show somehow. I like the interaction between her and Lucy. Lucy brought so much joy to billions of people. I don’t think there’s another person alive who is done the same.
Be hopefull!
This is one of my favorites of The Lucy Desi Comedy Hour along with Lucy Hunts Uranium. Thanks much for the insight behind it. “Half bombed” doesn’t surprise me lol. A lot of actors and actresses were that way back then. Heck I’m that way most weekends.
Congratulations! Over 9500 subscribers and counting!! Another great episode Rick, I've always enjoyed the Tallulah episode. I do subscribe to and enjoy your European Motors channel. As always, Be Hopeful!! Chris
This is literally my favorite of all time. Everyone had such great lines!
Be hopeful!
I remember this episode and the Mertz's reaction to being the "help". You couldn't tell that there were possible issues behind the scenes. Great info, as always. Love both channels. You're words are inspirational and have helped me in some situations recently. Thank you. Be hopeful!
Aww, it means a lot to know that my work actually helped your life positively. This motivates and inspires me. Thank you!
You're very welcome!!
Rick, about a month ago you uploaded a video about Lucy’s nose catching fire. Recently I watched a video of Lucy talking about rehearsals, then a lady asked her if it was scripted. “ Great question, but no it was not scripted. Bill (William Holden) almost fainted when it caught fire!” Lucy said. Anyway that has been on my mind. Have a great day!
Hi Rick! Thanks for another great video. Have a great day💜
As always Rick, great video!...and of course, be hopeful!
I always liked the I Love Lucy in the New York City in their apartment more than when they moved to Connecticut.. Be Hopeful!
I grew up watching I Love Lucy and at 65 I still enjoy watching the re-runs. Thanks and be hopeful !
Well daaaaling. We already know Tellulah was a bad girl. She had that reputation. What did Lucy and Desi expect from her? The best scene in that show was Tellulah's kitchen with the paint chair. Lucy: I've been thrown out of better places. Tellulah: You've never even been in better places.
Great information Rick! Be hopeful!
Excellent! Thank you for posting! Be Hopeful!! 🙏❤🎉
Well done, you. Lucy was famously difficult on guest who would appear on the show. Jack Benny once remarked while guest staring on The Lucy Show, "would someone please tell this woman she has the job". Furthermore, the episode was filmed very near the end of Desi and Lucy's marriage and as their Daughter posthumously commented about her parents, their work was the only thing holding the marriage together in the latter years, which made for a strand work environment. On the opposite side, it's visible in the episode that decades of alcohol and drug abuse, as well as a six pack a day smoking habit had began to take its toll on the then 55 year old Ms. Bankhead, so it's understandable all the elements that would have created friction. That said, what they created was nothing less than brilliant.
Another enjoyable one, Rick. Tallulah Bankhead was a terrific actress, more famous for the stage in the 30's and 40's, than film. Her most famous film is "Lifeboat" directed by Alfred Hitchcock and released on 1944. She won the New York Critic's award for Best Actress for that portrayal.
Bankhead was also a flamboyant character off screen and stage, and unfortunately an alcoholic, drug addict and chain smoker at 150 cigarettes or more a day. (That probably would rival Lucille Ball, who was an habitual smoker herself!) She had affairs with both men and women, many of them celebrities in their day and never tried to hide it. Her body and lungs were ravaged by the early 60's and she died of emphysema and the flu at age 66 in 1968.
Her career and personal life were both on the downswing when she did this Lucy and Desi Comedy Hour and they must have known about her alcohol and drug habits and erratic behavior before they hired her. But, with Bette Davis having to pull out at the last minute, they were stuck in a corner. It did turn out fairly well, though, all things considered. Bankhead 's career crossed Bette Davis's again in 1964, when she turned down the role of "Baby Jane" that Bette Davis took and played opposite Joan Crawford in "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane." Instead, Bankhead did a horror film called "Fanatic" retitled "Die, Die, My Darling," a bomb released in 1965
My favorite episode of the Lucy Desi Comedy Hour is the one with Fred MacMurray, where they all end up in the desert outside Vegas looking for uranium. They think they found some and agree to spit the profits, but the next morning, through a comedy of errors, Lucy and Desi, Fred and Ethet and MacMurray each thing the other teams are trying to get back to town to stake the claim first. There's a wild chase scene on the desert highways that's hilarious. I always get plenty of laughs out of it.
Yes, there are lots and lots of stories about her. Hollywood is a crazy bunch
As always great facts great video Thank you for putting in all the time to make the videos after one of these I love to go back and Watch the episode with the little background knowledge thanks for all you do BE HOPEFUL!
Awesome! Even after watching a Lucy episode that pertains, you can comeback and watch
Very interesting story! Thanks for sharing Rick! I guess these things do happen but at least she came through when it counted! BE HOPEFUL!!
Please email me at Ricknineg@yahoo.com
Sorry I missed your last live stream Rick! I was on my way to Boston from a weekend trip in New York. Unfortunately I didn't get to visit Jamestown. 😔 Hope I make your upcoming stream. Be hopeful!
This is wonderful. I worked on a show about Tallulah Bankhead, written and starring Tallulah's second cousin. It was mainly done in the east coast. Throughout the production I researched and read everything I could about Tallulah. I was able to get a hold of her autobiography in a used bookstore in Philadelphia. Be hopeful.
I am always amazed to hear when there are big problems with a guest star during rehearsals but when it show time it all comes together and in this case, brillianty. I remember seeing a video of Lucille Ball rehearsing with Richard Burton when he and Elizabeth Taylor we're guest starring and Here's Lucy. She was trying to give him stage directions and he was obviously having a difficult time with her. But once again the end product was brilliant.
Hi Rick.... thank you for your quick response... I have already searched European Motors and have subscribed... Many great years of European Motors success and of course I Love Lucy success.... Robert... "BE HOPEFUL!!!"
I really do appreciate tour aupport, Robert!
Thanks for the Upload 👍 !! XD William Holden did do the one witch Lucy's nose catches fire.. XD
Thanks for the great videos Rick .....And always ......BE HOPEFUL !
I also heard that Lucy was the difficult one. Dezi having to continuously apologize to Tallulah
Another favorite episode!! In my area they only showed these once a year. Not anymore. It’s been years. Very sad for I Love Lucy, Desi and Lucy lovers. I wish Netflix would show Lucy and Desi in all their content. Who do we talk to at Netflix,Please ?!
Funny to hear this story. I heard just the opposite. Desi and Lucy knew Tallulah's sometime problem with liquor. She told them that when she was working she was a professional. And when Desi went into her dressing room and saw a cup, she was reported to have said. "Noooooo daaarhllllinnnnggg....don't worry it's only coffee" Now whether there was a shot of something in that coffee....LOL....we don't know! But I've read much on Tallulah ( and saw the one woman show with Kathleen Turner) and I think all said and done she was a professional and knew that liquor and her work didn't mix. Same goes with the many stories about liquor and Laurette Taylor in the premiere of THE GLASS MENAGERIE on stage.
Rick, as long as you continue to do these videos, I have EVERY reason to Be Hopeful!
Great message!
I just discovered Tallulah Bankhead yesterday while watching old movies and decided how she looks strikingly like Lucille Ball and looked up Tallulah Bankhead and Lucille Ball never realizing she had been on the Lucy Desi comedy hour which I have seen over and over again and reruns on TV... I have to say she was an wonderful, amazing, brilliant comedic actress and I am one of her newest but biggest fans just like I've been one of Lucy's all my life! Be hopeful!
I think everybody here has a piece of the truth but I would give anything to go back to 1957 and be a fly on the wall at Desilu so I could witness television history in the making. Who knew that 66 years later we would still be talking about (and laughing to) this well written piece of comedy gold. “When Miss Bankhead is bored, Miss Bankhead will let you know!” Perfection!
I have always tried to explain something to people that will remain true forever. There's business and then everything else. People often get shortchanged because they only want to work with people who are nice/agreeable etc. Tallulah Bankhead was often known for being difficult. But when it was time to perform she generally nailed it.
In business that's all that should matter. You're not looking to have dinner with or be close to everyone you meet. All of this being said Tallulah Bankhead was a larger than life personality and there was never a dull moment with her. By the way that Lucy show episode with her was a great one.
I remember watching this episode when it first came out. I was only 7 years old and used to watch I Love Lucy with my mom and we would laugh so hard. I think this was one of the funniest episodes because I think Tallulah was hilarious. Such good memories. I miss those days and my mom too. Be Hopeful!
Thank you for doing this, I love learning more about Lucy! Be Hopeful!
I felt so honored being able to teach people a little more about them
great video! I loved the episode when I saw it a while ago and would have never known there was anything negative going on. Would have loved to see Betty Davis in the role! :be hopeful
I love the "stills" you use in your videos. Be Hopeful! ( happy flying too)
I appreciate all the support...even the high flying support
I also read in one of the books that the prop man needed to have the fried chicken for the dinner and he didn't want to have to cook it so he purchased some of the first frozen versions of it and said she was raving about it all day!
Great channel. Always loved this episode, as well as the one where they hunt uranium.
That one is one of my faves of the comedy hour
I would Of loved to see BD in this episode. Be Hopeful!
I've heard this story before about Tallulah working on I Love Lucy. The version I heard was she didn't want to do some of the things written into the episode, and that's why Desi Arnaz said look we're paying you good money, you need to do it. Be hopeful!
Love your channel, and as always, Be hopeful!
I recently reviewed Tallulah's biography and I was surprised to hear about her long addiction to alcohol, cigarettes (reportedly 150 a day) and sleeping pills. So, with this in mind, it's not surprising to me that she would have been problematic. Luckily she came through for the filming of the comedy hour because it's a great show! Great video, as always. :) Good luck to whoever wins the giveaway!
I love I Love Lucy and all the shows from the 50's and 60's. It was the best time for TV and music. It's great remembering all that while watching your videos. It's surprising that someone as young as you are is interested in all that. I'm 70 now and I do have a way to play DVD's. BE HOPEFUL!
Great video Rick. I did not know that she was so hard to work with.
BE HOPEFUL!!!!!!
great video, was the comedy hour based in when they moved into the country its cool they kept that going i think the country esp are so cool. Be Hopeful!

You are just the best, I learned so many thing from my favorite serie thanks to you!! Be hopeful !! DaaaArrlin' :) Be hopeful !

Great video as always. Be hopefull!!
Love waking up Monday morning and seeing a new RICKNINEG video!! Too bad I can't hit that SUBSCRIBE button more than once lol!
Haha, thats awesome
I think I have already commented on this video and entered and lost 😢. I loved this episode. I thought it was very funny 😂, thanks Rick 😊
This is one of my favorite episodes. What? Bette Davis? That would have been awesome! Anyway... (I'm listening to it while I type). I love this episode. And I also love the Joan Crawford episode of the Lucy Show., I love this channel. 💖
I first saw Tallulah Bankhead as Black Widow on Batman when I was a child. I thought she was a little scary, but I really liked her. When my grandma saw how much I liked her (I was legally adopted by my grandparents) she then told me that we are distantly related to her and she really did call people, "Dahling" because she wasn't good with names. Disney based his version of his Cruella DeVil cartoon character on Tallulah's personality. And I don't really care how they all got along during rehearsals, the final product is what counts and it was fabulous. I saw it one day at an old fashioned video store and I grabbed it!
One of the better episodes from the Lucy desi comedy hour was the one with Tallulah. Great work on this fact or fiction! Be hopeful!
Thanks sweet pea
Always enjoy your videos! Be HOPEFUL!
Thanks again RIC! I AM hopeful! BE HOPEFUL!
Lucille herself said Tallulah was flawless that night of filming but she kept flubbing her own lines because she was worried about Bankhead 😂 and promised herself never to let that happen again. Clearly the Broadway Belle had no intention of giving less than 💯 on opening night. So basically the cast was just Bankhead-ed, if you will. In the end a hilarious episode. Bette Davis is my fav, kinda wish she pulled through but Bankhead is dahling.
It's kind of hard to believe that Desi was a tough boss because he was a Pisces Sun and Cancer Moon but when looking at his chart, he did have Mars conjunct the Sun both in Pisces and he had Pluto conjunct his Ascendant in Gemini which gave him a magnetic and persuasive appeal or demeanor.
The episodes with Tallulah were some of my favorites. I thought she was so glamorous and I loved her name! Be hopeful!
Keep the great videos coming! Be hopeful!
I miss the show " I love Lucy "... and the real characters - Lucy, Ricky, and the rest of the people on the show.. I'm new to your awesome channel - be hopeful.....
Thanks for sharing ...Be Hopeful!
The last thing Tallulah ever did on television was as a villian on ''Batman''. I think she was the ''Black Widow''. She passed away shortly after filming that.
Always loved I Love Lucy watching on WNEW Channel 5 in New York growing up in the 1970s. I don't have any on DVD so starting with Season 1 is great. Be Hopeful!
Dame Tallulah Bankhead did have a diva reputation, but by all accounts she was a professional and put 100%effort into any role she took on When she was playing the role of the Black Widow (The last Role she would ever play as she died within days after the episode was finished), Adam West described her as a delightful and charming lady.
