I loved when Ethel cut Lucy's spaghetti with manicure scissors in the "L.A. at Last" episode. And I loved when Ethel said "I have to go pick up a friend" after Lucy fell from the balcony upstairs when stalking a celebrity.
OMG. That same scene she is screaming a recipe to Ricky and when Lucy falls, she says to Ricky “well I hate to eat and run….” Very funny
Lol
That was priceless!
Loved all. Yes Ethel typically underated and I think she was comedic talent was deluxe!
Vivian Vance had the best facial expressions!
Ethel’s expression on the train with the raincoat is priceless!
The episode in the Brown Derby. Vivian Vance’s facial expression when William Holden walks into the restaurant was priceless.
Vivian Vance was an extremely talented and strong actress in her own right. She also had the class to not compete with Lucille Ball in a scene, but to compliment her. Look at her in "First Stop" with the tooth paste all over her, the dinning car food all over her in "The great Train Robbery," and who could forget her hiding a dozen eggs in her rear pockets only to have Fred open the kitchen door and break them. In all of these, Lucy was still the star, be it in the bed that moved across the set, pulling the emergency break or hugging Ricky at the end of the tango. Mankind will never again know four performers as talented as Desi, Lucy, Viv and Bill.
“When Miss Bankhead is bored Miss Bankhead will let you know.”
One of my favorite lines in the Comedy Hour specials.
“Oh, Mr. Loper!” -always one of my absolute favorite Ethel Mertz moments :)
Same here Kimberly :)
Fred and Ethel are comedy gold. Considering that they couldn't stand each other, they always delivered the goods seamlessly in each and every episode.
Was that really true that Vivian Vance and William France
Hated each other
@@sandrafraser4759 Yes. Vivian Vance was upset that William Frawley who was decades older then she was going to play her husband. They were originally going to have Barbara Pepper play Ethel Mertz who was even younger then VV, but because William Frawley was a known alcoholic as well as Barbara Pepper they didn't want to risk having two alcoholics playing key characters. Desi found Vivian Vance who he saw in a play at the time and had her try out for the part. I think he hired Vivian before mentioning it to Lucy. Lucy wasn't happy at first. Lucy made sure that Vivians outfits in the show were to make her look matronly. Vivian was told not to lose more then ten pounds either. Lucy didn't want to be upstaged on her own show. I believe there was some friction between Lucy and Vivian initially, then they became close friends. William Frawley dispised Vivian even more and never forgave her when she declined a spin off show featuring Fred and Ethel after Lucy was canceled. When William Frawley died Vivian found out while out one evening and bought a round of drinks in celebration of his death in 1966.
@@rickloera9468 Thank you Rick,I now know it is true the two actors didn't get along off camera, which is sad really because they worked so well together in the show.
@@sandrafraser4759 --Yes it's true. It started when Vivian Vance told Desi Arnaz when the series began that William Frawley was old enough to play her Dad and Vance didn't like that. They tolerated each other on a professional level but that was it. Arnaz told each of them privately they gotta make it work because they were perfect for the show and were basically irreplaceable. Vivian Vance's real name was Vivian Jones but the name Vance sounded better for Hollywood. The rest is history..
Of course it wasn’t in an “I Love Lucy” Episode, but my favorite, most memorable Vivian Vance episode acting with Lucy was when they both got trapped in the (bathroom) shower and the water started rising more & more, and they could not open the glass shower door because they installed the door backwards, so the rising water (pressure) prevented the door from opening correctly!
I will never forget that episode of “The Lucy Show”, EVER!! So many laughs!!
“Situation” comedy at it’s finest!! (Where the humor comes from the ABSURD physical situation, NOT dialogue!!)
{Writers of today’s shows should take notes from the Masters of this!!}
That's where I came in about a week or so ago, and my jaw dropped wondering how'd that happen? Now I know. Thanks.
Hi Rick. My favorite Ethel moment is when Ethel tries to cover for Lucy that she isn't bothering Cornel Wilde upstairs in the penthouse. Ethel tries to hold it together as she's talking to Ricky, as Lucy is dangling off Cornel's balcony. Vivian Vance had exceptional comedic talent! Thank you for your fun video!!!
bocky smith i agree and was going to give the same example. as lucy's situation becomes more perilous, ethel amps up the hysteria.
i think this was her finest moment. comedy gold.
Vivian played a great character so glad she and Lucy were friends even when not on set.
You said it best...Vivian Vance was a true comedic genius!
Thank you for bringing back some really fabulously funny memories.
One of my absolute favorite Ethel moments is when Lucy fell from the balcony from the star upstairs episode. The audience was so loud with laughter you could not hear what she was saying yet her expressions said it all. If I ever wanted a best friend on my side it would be an Ethel Mertz.
Ethel was the best when meeting celebrities
I love all those moments with Ethel. If I had to pick one if would be when she meets John Wayne.
Ethel’s eyes light up,”like oh yeah Bob Cummings in a bathtub.” Her whole demeanor was saying it.” Very cute.😊
Ethel Would you like a piece of rock Mr. Candy .Great line.
Love it all! My favorites are when they square dance with Ernest Ford, and when Lucy dances the jitterbug with her eyes dilated.
So many great clips! To be honest, I was looking specifically for the one where she meets Harpo Marx and he offers his leg instead of a handshake. There was a thread on Twitter where we were discussing other ways to greet people besides a handshake because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and I thought it would make a good clip to show. Thanks for what you put together, though---I loved it :)
Dear Rick:
Greetings!
My all-time favorite “I Love Lucy” episode is “LA at Last!,” since BOTH Eve Arden of “Our Miss Brooks,” and Lucille Ball, are two of my favorite actresses and Situation Comedies of all time!
Keep up the good work!
Cordially,
Selwyn
🙂
+Selwyn Miller Thanks so much for your support!
I love that you did this....Oh Mr Loper!! Thank you for this!!!
LA at last was def my favorite! I loved That they were at the Brown Derby and their reactions every time they announced someone hadn’t a phone call lol
Great episode, Rick. And to think that Vivian Vance is now one of the legends herself!
Ethel was my all time favorite. I loved Lucy but I related to Ethel more. I still think Vivian was so underrated. What a great character.
The two best recurring lines on I Love Lucy:
Ethel: "Gee Lucy, do you think that's a good idea?"
Ricky: "Lucy! What are you doing? What are you crazy or something??"
My favorite character by far was Ethel. Rick Nineg, I loved your imitation of Ethel’s giggle. While Lucy was the center of attention, Vivian Vance was so brilliant in every scene. I think she remains one of the most underrated actresses of all time. I think Ethel’s best line when she meets a celebrity is: “Would you like a piece of Rock Mr. Candy?” I don’t know how she got through that line with a straight face.
Now I've got to get out my Lucy Desi comedy hour tapes that my granny recorded me when i was a kid!! The tapes are ancient but they still play! Awesome video ❤❤
Ethel, Fred & Tallulah Bankhead, just classic, great comedy. One of my very favorite episodes!
I like the William Holden one the best out of what's here, but one of my more fav Ethel ones was the one with Cornel Wilde. Frankly I think Ethel was the best of all of em. I realize it was a great ensemble cast, and the scripts were great and everything, but I think Vivian Vance was just tops. Thanks for post.
Ever since I read the biography of Vivian Vance, I have such a great respect for her and how she became Ethel. Lucy wouldnt have been the same without her. My favorite celebrity meeting was when she says, "Would you like a piece of rock, Mr. Candy?" hahah Hilarious!
Gotta be "Would you like a piece of rock, Mr. Candy!" Another great compilation and glad to see Ethel being spotlighted. In my opinion, she never got the attention Lucille Ball did. Yet there would be no I Love Lucy without her. She was fabulous with all the celebrities including Tallulah Bankhead! Probably my favorite episode with Vivian was when they went to stay at her father's house in Albuquerque as it was ALL about Ethel! Another great job and YOU stay positive!
+HRHPaula Lewis Well thanks, Paula!
I love the rock/candy part. Such a shame he was gay
"Ethel Mae Potter, we never forgot her!"
😆
That was the best eoisode but why was it removed from Amazon?
Rick we love you analyzing this wonderful series. You are my favorite Channel on UA-cam! Keep on making your videos they are so entertaining.
I love Ethel’s facial expressions, gestures and giggles as she talks to the celebrities. All the trip to Hollywood Ethel episode moments are my favorite ones❣️
This is an original idea for another video on I Love Lucy. Very enjoyable! I think you covered most of the celebs that Ethel met and when "silly" over.
In what I think is the last of the hour long shows, Ernie Kovacs and his wife, Edie Adams appeared. They were popular in their day, but now long forgotten. Anyhow, I don't remember Ethel going "google eyes" over them, but I could be wrong.
Also, as for the other celebs in the hour long episodes you didn't mention, Fernando Lamas, Red Shelton and Danny Thomas( to name a few,) I'm not sure if Ethel went "gaw-gaw-faced" over them or not. Your memory, Rick, is probably better on that than mine is.
+Michael A Williams Good call but I believe there were no big reactions like the ones listed here so I left them out
Lmao "would you like a piece of rock mr. Candy?" Hahaha
Thank you for these episodes. Vivian Vance was absolutely perfect!
Fun Fact, after the"I Love Lucy" sires ended, William Frawley worked with Fred MacMurry on "My Three Sons" for five years before he had health issues and before his in 1966.
I loved that she did whatever Lucy did..I always wanted a Ethel friend..
I love your videos. I grew up on I Love Lucy! Whenever I feel down, I love Lucy makes me laugh and forget my troubles for a while. You have wonderful information. God Bless You!
Thanks so much for enjoying my content! Be sure to browse the channel to see all the cool vids Ive made :)
Ethel is me if I ever got the chance to meet these LEGENDS!!!!!!
I have always loved the episode with Lucy dancing with Van Johnson! One of my all-time favorites!
Awesome video! Ethel certainly gets excited around celebrities and her reactions are adorable. Love it!
Love love your videos Rick. Sorry trying to catch up on all of them! Have a wonderful weekend💜
I have always loved the episode where Ethel meets John Wayne. she is the funniest with him, even after stealing his footprints with Lucy.
Lol the William Holden episode is my favorite of all time😂
Hi! I wanted to also comment on me being a HUGE Lucy fan every since I was 5 years old and I Loved Vivian Vance. I thought she was so perfect for the role as Ethel Mertz. She was suppose to be Lucy's second banana but she did not preformed like a second banana. I thought she matched Lucy in talent and comedic skills every step of the way. And in some cases, I think she surpasses Lucy in "one up man-ship". Especially, Especially, when it came to episodes that called Lucy and Ethel to be mad at each other and fighting, and trying to put each another in their places. Like, i remember the scene in the episode "Never do Business with Friends" when the washing machine that the Mertz's purchased from the Recardo's broke down and both sides were arguing with each other as to who actually owned it. Well, it came to a big shouting match between Lucy and Ethel on their back balcony until Mrs Trumbull come by to intervene, to calm them down, so she could mediate the situation. Once they both told l Mrs. Trumbull their versions of the story, the arguing starts right back up again with Lucy SCREAMING in Ethel's face and Ethel looking away like to say "Whatever." When Mrs. Trumbull says "Mrs Ricardo, your temper is as hot as your red hair!" Lucy bellows, "Well, what about her?!!" Ethel shoots back, "Mine is as cold as your dark roots." And leaves Lucy only to say "WELL!!!" and casually strolls back into her apartment.... I think Vivian was brilliant when it came to acting this Iconic part.
I read that at first Lucy did not want Vivian Vance for the part.
i still love the reaction when she sees william holden its just so true alot of time when you see a famous person. i hope i dont get like her if i met any one
Another blah Monday brightened up by a rick nineg video!!! I've ALWAYS been an Ethel fan...ILL simply wouldn't be as good without her. The proof is that we're still enjoying these episodes 50 years later!! Can't say that about any other 50s sitcom, can we? Great work Rick!!
+lucy girl Thats my goal, to help bring smiles
Thank you Rick Vivian Vance was truly a super talent my favorite Ethel episode was when she visited her father.
Thank you Thank you Thank you !! Such a wonderful vid! :D I love Ethel!!
BTW, my favourite star Lucy met was Bill Holden - especially the puppy dog look he gave her over the booth at the restaurant, you know, giving her a dose of her own medicine and I agree totally with you. John Wayne was a wonderful guest star, his natural warmth and good humour seemed to read well in his acting. I think despite his super macho image he must've been a very kind and gracious gentleman in real life.
+James Stratton I heard nothing but great things about Wayne
I think my favorite episode is when Ethel says would you like a piece of rock Mr. Candy bar 😃😂❤
I love that Vivian had worked (on stage) with some of the most amazing celebrities years before they met/worked with Lucy.
yes, unlike Lucy, Vivian was a trained stage actress.
Rick - thank you for your posts. I really enjoy them; I thought I Love Lucy was the best thing when I was a kid and it's great don't you think that Lucy, Ricky, Ethel and Fred are still making people laugh still in the 21st century. I think they'd be really happy their craft lives on. I'm devastated by UA-cam's new revised rules and I hope they don't affect your ability to keep your posts. Thanks again for the posts. I thought I knew heaps about I Love Lucy but have learnt so much new stuff from your interesting and informative pieces. Your fan from Melbourne, Australia.
This is awesome!! I need to tell my daughter about your channel. She's been a Lucy fan since she was a toddler (She's 36). She has a great collection of Lucy memorabilia.
+Ken Do Awesome, please do tell her
Ethel's reactions to people r always funny.... i like wen she saw Fernando lamus in his bathrobe she just had that cute giggle
I love Ethel Meretz.
John Wayne is my favorite. Wayne had good timing and the expressions on his face are hilarious.
Another classic was "Equal Rights", when Lucy and Ethel were doing dishes in the restaurant, and called Ricky and Fred,. They pretended they were being robbed, and Lucy pretended Ethel was being attacked. "Don't hit Ethel!", Lucy shouted, and Ethel let out with an "Ugh..".
Such an original idea for a video - you're really digging into the minutiae of I Love Lucy. It's interesting how when the series first ran, Vivian Vance wasn't as acknowledged. It was all about Lucille Ball, who herself tried to deflect attention away from herself and onto the writers. I'm glad that time, and efforts such as yours, has focused a wider light on Vivian Vance. Watching your highlights in the video just reinforced her inimitable style which was somewhat taken for granted at the time. She had a uniquely comedic style. I'm sorry she wasn't recognized more at the time.
+HeathCliff Rothman Thanks, my brain thinks up these crazy things
Ethel was great!! Hollywood and the William Holden episode. Awesome!!
Hello Mr nineg! I love Lucy it's being one of my favorite shows, thanks for taking the time to show some of the clips 😀 ❤️ love them all
Rick, another great video! I believe that I Love Lucy really is a timeless classic. Thanks for presenting facts in such a fun way. I can't wait to see your next flying lesson. Take to the sky and be hopeful!!
+Christopher Kraft I had fun making the video for you
Great! I loved Ethel. One of my favorites with Ethel was when she was at her fathers house in Albuquerque and was ask to perform. Nice job Rick!
+John Scherer :)
I too liked that one. Ethel was the star in that one. :)
This was a thoroughly enjoyable video. I laughed through the whole thing. I forgot how many celebrities there were. And Ethel's reactions are precious.
+Stephen Glick Fantastic even when I rewatch them as well
She sang shorten Bread
You made my day
Thank you!😄😍
So excited to hear that!
I can understand Ethel's reaction to seeing celebrities. One Saturday I happened to see Rock Hudson and I got so excited I ripped my husband's raincoat pocket because my arm was linked in his and he had his hand in his pocket at the same time. That Lucy was the greatest. I even got to Jamestown, NY and saw her grave.
My mom and I spent the weekend and one extra day in Jamestown to attend the Birthday celebration party. What a wonderful 4 day weekend it was. 🙂👍👍👍👍👍
These episode break downs are quite interesting and different .. it’s always fascinating to know how seemingly simple scenes were shot in a time when special effects were limited.... perhaps the Superman Tv show would be another one to examine .. even as a young child the flying etc looked laughably fake but I still loved the show!
I loved Ethel she was priceless :) thanks Rick as always :)
+darek flak you got it
Her reaction to meeting Don Loper is my favorite.
I always laugh at John Wayne’s line after Lucy puts her purse on her head, “I owe Bill Holden an apology.” 😂
Thank you for highlight my comment about Lucy n William Holden
No problem Tombo!
They were ALL GREAT! Thanks for sharing!
My favorite is the Dancing Star I love the dancing with Van Johnson
love i love lucy still laugh alot iam 41 n still laugh like watching it for first time i cannot sleep without watching i love lucy thank you for your good detailing of funniest momments in each character
I love how the picture of Jimmy Durante's nose uses its own paper on the restaurant wall... 😂😀😁 3:32
Yes I loved the episodes went they went to Hollywood California n met all this famous celebrities. Its great so funny my favorite is Lucy eating spaghetti n meatballs get stuck on spaghetti while aWillam Holden is staring at her and Ethel cuts her spaghetti with a tiny scissor that was so funny
Great job Rick! More Viv spotlights please!!!
Oh I love the pocketbook on Lucys head I would do something like that. Thanks Rick!
Thank you so much for shining a spotlight on the genius behind the genius. Vivan Vance was under-recognised historically, but as "I Love Lucy" further cements its place in classic Americana and reverence, her ingenuity is finally being celebrated. It was mentioned in a biography how she was the only one of the four main cast members to always remain in character. These moments brilliantly capture her incredible talent. However, if there was one time among all 179 half-hour episodes where her performance and comic timing were at their zenith, it would be in the episode, "The Star Upstairs." After being locked out on the balcony of Cornell Wilde's penthouse suite, Lucy made her escape by precariously lowering herself over the balcony to her hotel room below, supported only by a few bedsheets tied to a heavy planter. Just as she's dangling over her own balcony and about to be pulled to safety by Ethel, Ricky enters the room diverting her attention. The dialogue and performance that followed are among the best in the series, as Ethel tries frantically to divert Ricky's attention as the sheets attached to the planter slip from the base to the plant itself, then breaks away entirely as Lucy falls and the audience drowns out Vivian's dialogue with laughter. Vivian Vance was also a talented musical performer, like Bill Frawley, from Vaudeville, leading to a whole host of episodes featuring their singing and dancing talents. Vivian, Desi, Lucy and Bill were part of an ensemble cast we'll never see the likes of again. As an interesting footnote, another Top 10 classic sitcom that's somewhat forgotten today came with a similar formula. The writers of "I Love Lucy," Madeline Pugh and Bob Carroll, Jr., would go on to greater successes, both with and without Lucille Ball. Fast forward 20 years and another cast of four brilliant adults and a child would form a similarly loving bond. Those same writers would become the Executive Producers of a show that ran nine seasons and featured the wonderful antics of Mel, Alice, Vera, and Flo, Belle, and Jolene, and Tommy, along with a cavalcade of regulars at Mel's Diner. For those who loved "Alice," the best similarities are very much present. Many thanks for yet another amazing featurette.
Great clips, RIC! I am always HOPEFUL, since I started watching you! You're doing well in your flight instructions...
Thanks so much. Flying high and as far as I can
The William Holden episode-fabulous. Like I've said, Lucy was a gem, BUT..Vivian was also fabulous, and helped make Lucy funnier.
One of my top 5 episodes. :) the Boyer one.
Vivan Vance was supberd as Ethel Mertz. My favorite was when she met Don Loper & Rock Hudson.
I love the spaghetti episode with William Holden!😂😂
I would have Loved to see when Ethel met Red Skelton and Mr. Lamas. I liked when she met Fred McMurray. I Love all I Love Lucy. Also when Ethel met Harpo Marx was Funny and Superman. Just too name a few more.
There all so good how can you pick your favorite?? There was one in Hollywood where I think Ricky brought home a star but Ricky stole the show with his reaction to Lucy lighting a cigarette and lightning her nose Ricky's eye just bugged out so funny. Do you know that one love to see that again?
Glad to see someone giving Vivian Vance the recognition she deserves. Have you read the biography of Vivian Vance? I read it and she had a fascinating life. By the time Vivian Vance signed on to do I Love Lucy she had already been acting on stage for over 20 years. She also appeared in a few movies before she did I Love Lucy.
Of course my favorite is with JW...hope you are doing well Rick...sending hugs and positive thoughts your way. Thanks for sharing these awesome moments!
+Lola Basil doing great, thanks
Lucy wouldn't have been Lucy without Ethel mertz😂😊😘
I love that you pay homage to these supporting super-greats Rick.
+VIDEOHEREBOB I totally had to
They are all fantastic!
I am glad to hear you say what a talent Vivian Vance was!!!
She was!
Just everything in Brown Derby episode 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Rick what a great video!!! Vivian Vance was amazing!!
I liked Vivian when she meets Tallulah Bankhead and puts the tray in front of her.
Learning to appreciate Vivian Vance. She was so talented!
all this Vivian talk came to mind one i just saw recently( is not Vivian w/ a celebrity) but Lucy is hanging from a sheet- rope trying to get in from the balcony upstairs to hers Vivian is nervous trying to prevent Ricky from turning around and seeing Lucy the whole interaction between Ethel and him was so funny i was laughing out loud!
Loved the Fred one when she pushes Fred her husband off the seat to make room for Fred McMurray. She is funny and aggressive. Go Ethel. 😊😊
I love Ethel so much. She is a best friend.
