When I was growing up, my mother told me that her grandmother (my great grandmother) designed the country house for the I Love Lucy show. My great grandfather worked for the studios building movie sets. They were originally from Texas and came to Los Angeles in approximately 1920. California became a state in 1850 so it was a fairly new state when they got here. Somehow, this video popped into my feed. I never met my great grandmother, and it was really cool to see this little piece of her marked in history. I watched the shows in black-and-white as a child but seeing it in color brings it to life. I sent it to my mother and she said it made her homesick. We talked about seeing the same pieces of furniture in either her house or my grandmother's house! 😊 I believe my mother said that my great grandmother decorated the set for free. This was right after the depression and my grandmother told me that they paid the doctor with eggs lol. Maybe she got a few chickens lol. By the way, my grandmother told me that during the depression her mom would take down the curtains and make three beautiful dresses for her and her sisters. As she put it, they had the most beautiful dresses in the neighborhood. Now I can see what they kind of looked like because she made those curtains too! Thanks for the amazing video!😊
Keith's perspective on Lucy's desire for home and family I believe is correct. Her father died when she was very small and they lived with their grandfather. Then tragedy struck when the gun incident injured a neighbor child and the family lost their home. Clearly it was a trauma for all that defined Lucy's life.

@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane no...it wasn't Betty Ramsey that did those domestic arts...she was the socialite in the neighborhood. The character of Grace Munson was who provided the jelly and butter... As mentioned in the show "Lucy wants to move to the country"
This is a real treat to see this home! This house in Connecticut and the farm in the original "Christmas in Connecticut" are my favorites! My real dream homes. I've lived in Connecticut since '65 and I worked in Westport, CT as well. I can't tell you how often I drove around trying to search for any home that looked like the Ricardo's country home. Did you ever watched a Joan Crawford film called, When Ladies Meet with Greer Garson? The film shows a beautiful country house with pond and waterwheel, it has always been a dream home of mine.

I’m now 73, and during Lucy’s show I, too, fell in love with the country home. When I got married, my husband and I had a business where we went into people’s homes. One day we had a job in a home that looked very much like this, right down to the split, Dutch doors, paneled walls, stone fireplace and bookcases. The woman’s husband in this home had just died, unfortunately. She wanted to go back to her old hometown and asked if we knew anyone who was looking to buy a home. Because we were just starting out and didn’t have much money, we laughed and said we would and somehow we came up with the money. My Ethan Allen furniture looked like this. My kitchen range, though, looked like Samantha’s in Bewitched, and…my dishes were almost the same. The company was Franciscan Earthenware; it had two patterns, Ivy, like Lucy’s, and Apple, which I had. The shapes were identical, only the hand-painted pattern differed; green Ivy vines, or bright, red apples. I guess I watched too much TV as a child. We lived in that home for more than 20 years and still miss it. No other home felt right. Thanks for the memories!
Marina, you granted my wish! We’ll, one of them, anyway! I’ve always wanted to see this in color! Now, if you’ll just do “Collinwood” from “Dark Shadows,” I could die happy! 😊 Thank you!
Back to back sofas were once a popular idea in larger living rooms that had multiple focal points and sometimes still see it done today. Frequently a sofa table would separate the two so that lamps could be placed.
I love the country episodes and rewatch them often! Marina, how great that Keith’s memories were included- he was a huge part of the country episodes. Talking to the moon from his intercom and telling Bruce Ramsey about it…

I wasn't a huge Lucy fan but I must have seen these episodes at some point in my life because decades later, it's still my visual reference when people say "country house." What a dream!
That's cool that even a non-Lucy fan can appreciate the great set design. It reaffirms to me that we don't just love these homes because we loved them shows, but because the set designers were brilliant!
I have been an I Love Lucy fan 4ever. I have all her seasons & watch them often. The house is beautiful. Luv country & rustic decorations. Thx 4 video. Very good.

Marina! Thanks once again for an amazing tour of one of the world's most beloved TV series. Watching the show as youngster, I was especially envious of the lazy Susans at the Ricardos cottage home. I believe that one of those lazy Susan's actually made its way to the "My Three Sons" kitchen set. Thanks, also, for including the extensive interview with Keith Thibodeaux.
@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane I was going to mention that William Frawley made his way to the "My Three Sons" set, along with one of those "lousy susans," given that the two series were produced at the Desilu studios.

@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane I as well. An intriguing country home. I especially liked that second curved staircase which descended into the kitchen. Ahh this is a good one.😃 I loved this home from 'I Love Lucy'. It was so warm, and comforting. I love this era of 50-60's interior design. It feels confident, and relaxing. The colors, and textures are so right. Soft green, and wood and stone. Definitely one you'd dream of living in. Thanks.
This house is even more beautiful in color and being able to really look at it. I remember wondering many times, though, as a child watching it in reruns, how they were able to afford such a place, coming from a small apartment.
Thank you for putting this tour together. I grew up watching I Love Lucy from the NY Apartment to the Country house. I noticed there weren’t any kitchen cabinets for dishes other than over the refrigerator and above the doorway. It was a great house.
Lovely. I was always fascinated by the Dutch doors from that set, and I've always longed to have one in my house, too. Hasn't happened but I still think about it! A set I'd like to see: the house from Family Matters. That seemed like such a home-like and welcoming place. Also I'm pretty sure I saw parts of that set re-used on other shows.

@DebbiePochy - as a son of the beautiful Nutmeg State, I couldn't agree with you more. I LOVE those Connecticut episodes - Most folks don't care for the Ricardos' move to Connecticut - but it is interesting to note that the show had its longest laugh in "Lucy Does the Tango" - SIX MINUTES - so long that CBS had to edit the audience's laughter. I also read that Lucille Ball personally oversaw the set decoration. It's beautiful in black and white - better still in color - thank you, Ms. Coates, for your spectacular work.
I believe that as far as the den area it’s a replica of their real life home. I’ve been a lifelong fan of I love Lucy. I wad born in 1960 how could I not be, and as well as a leave it to Beaver fan!❤

One thing I was always fascinated with has to do with how both set and story depict the economy of the home. On television, it seems like the characters are sitting on mountains of cash. Notice how even though Ricky palled at Lucy’s lavish expenditure, he didn’t make her take any of it back. I know I’ve said it before, but I so appreciate the careful research you do in order to complete these sets. This home definitely has “early 1900’s east coast vibes.” I think set designers are so clever how they create these homes to make the viewer really believe these shows are actually being shot in their context. For Ricky & Lucy, it was Connecticut. For 3’s Company, it was Santa Monica/LA. For Frasier it was Seattle. I love how set designers fool us.
I wanted to live in their country home when I was a kid watching that show, and I definitely would want to live in it now. You did a marvelous job. Thanks for posting!

What a special treat to have Keith take part in this! I am always tickled by most of the kitchens in these homes and how impractical they were. Like Lucy really cooked on a wood stove! lol
Good point. I remember her being impressed that Betty Ramsey made her own butter and jam. Maybe she gave the wood stove a good try? 😊
@@thomasmcnerney9745 Thank you!
The wood stove wasn't for cooking. It was for heating the kitchen in Winter. We had one in a house we rented many years ago.
@@NostalgiaTelevision, My cousin Flossie had a wood stove in the living room and a wood cook stove in the kitchen. In the 1980s.
It's truly very beautiful. This is one home I WISH I could have created for me. Thank you for bringing it to life💕
I'm glad you liked this tour, especially since you're from Connecticut. It's an amazing home.
Did you ever watched a Joan Crawford film called, When Ladies Meet with Greer Garson? The film shows a beautiful country house with pond and waterwheel, it has always been a dream home of mine.
@@hectormanuel9793 Oh, yes! I love that one. 😍
I live in an old colonial style home built in 1850. It’s more of a “This Old House” house, always in need of repairs. I love the Early American architecture and would love to have it look some day as special as Lucy’ country home.
I loved this house one of my favorites❤❤

So wonderful ... this and the other programs in this series ... floating through the sets of these cherished television and motion picture homes!
😊
Oh wow! You lived the dream. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, I will definitely be doing Collinwood. Someday.
I second, third, and fourth this!
Back to back sofas were once a popular idea in larger living rooms that had multiple focal points and sometimes still see it done today. Frequently a sofa table would separate the two so that lamps could be placed.
Today a sofa table with a large lamp would have worked well between the 2 large sofas, back in the 1950s no sofa tables were used.
I love the country episodes and rewatch them often! Marina, how great that Keith’s memories were included- he was a huge part of the country episodes. Talking to the moon from his intercom and telling Bruce Ramsey about it…

This house is even more beautiful in color and being able to really look at it. I remember wondering many times, though, as a child watching it in reruns, how they were able to afford such a place, coming from a small apartment.

Lovely. I was always fascinated by the Dutch doors from that set, and I've always longed to have one in my house, too. Hasn't happened but I still think about it!
Thank you. I didn't know Lucy was involved in the set decoration, but that makes sense with what Keith Thibodeaux said in the interview.

I love what set designers do too! 😍
