Don't try to figure out the B-52s. Their songs are about style and the feel and it works really well for the kookiness of a good party. That's what they are mostly about -- just a good time.
Why the hell does everyone act like the b52s are some dumbed down “party band” they really aren’t. You can dance to them like practically any other form of music yes, but they had a punk kind of thing going on especially with Fred’s style of vocals, and the lyrics on most of these songs are really vivid and creative, a lot of their lyrics remind me of talking heads a bit, another popular band with hits you can dance to at parties, but just like the B52s they have amazing albums
Its about fun and having a imagination! Im 47 and grew up on the B-52s your exactly there isnt nothing to figure out they are fun songs! Almost Techno! No political statement or talking about other race, creed or religion in B-52s just using your imagination and having fun! Its for everyone! Before I get corrected they might have some political songs or something but im not 100% on that!
@@byHexted Uh, we are talking about "Rock Lobster" here. If you can explain how it has a more deep meaning other than just a fun song with a cool vibe, then go for it. LOL Having lots of songs that are just for fun and enjoyment isn't a bad thing.
Turd Ferguson Remembering the whiplash I used to get dancing to this band. I saw them last summer, and they still rock your socks off and bring the party full force.
once you understand that the B-52s are all about avant garde, experimental, eccentric arthouse energy, you'll be jamming! Fred Schneider [singer] also writes a lot of stream of consciousness poetry. The group is all about joy and being unique. Love them!! Planet Claire another one of my favorites from them
Saw them live in the East Village right before their first album was released, and several more times over many years. Maximum danceable fun, but they also have a lot of heart. Check “Ain’t It a Shame” and “Channel Z”
It's been said that John Lennon heard this song in a disco in the Bahamas when it first came out, and said...'Listen, these girls are doing Yoko!'. He loved this band.
Don’t overthink the B-52’s, Jay! Side note: I was about your age, a freshman in college (1980), living away from home for the first time, in a co-ed dorm. 😍I have very fond memories of the B-52s and of this period in general, thank you!
I'm proud to say them and REM are from right down the road in Athens, Georgia. If you want more great Georgia bands, check out The Black Crows, Collective Soul, and Indigo Girls! 🍑
The B-52s were totally right for their time. They came out with Rock Lobster around the time when Punk Rock was big and ushered in a whole New Wave sound. I remember hearing them on progressive rock college radio stations during the early 80s. It didn't take long for this group to go mainstream.
@ted ritola Hey, no doubt you are correct, but in my world the B-52s didn't exist till 1980. The only groups i listened in 70s were the Beatles and the Stones.
They could be considered part of the late 70s post-punk movement (which was basically everything that didn't fit into the mainstream pop, rock, country, or r&b released after punk music hit it's peak in the mid 70s). "Progressive Rock" wasn't a term that was used until about the 90s (and in actual use, it was more to define rock music that would have been alternative in the 80s, but became more accepted and mainstream in the 90s). The B52s, They Might Be Giants, Violent Femmes, and R.E.M. wrre some of the bands that could be considered the founding members of the whole "college radio" scene, as it wasn't really considered a separate thing until these bands came on the scene and became popular at colleges across the U.S.A. in the early 80s.
This is my favorite B-52s song. I was lucky enough to see them in concert a few years ago and have a shirt that says "Rock Lobster" with a lobster on it. I love it. This was a great reaction, really happy you laughed too!
Just seeing that you were reacting to this song brought a smile to my face! Glad you found a live performance to watch. The guitar player and the girl in the pink dress are brother and sister. After Ricky's tragic death, Keith switched from drums to guitar. The B-52's got their name from the beehive wigs the girls used to wear. They were the quintessential party band from Athens, GA. A great book about the Athens music scene is Party Out of Bounds.
This is REALLY old school new wave! It's a true classic though. Imagine being at a small club, drinking and dancing with all your friends with a band like this playing...those were the days.
When this came on at a club dancing everyone would like sink to the floor during the Down Down Down part and then pop back up. I saw them to a free concert in Central Park in the early 90s. So much fun.
Loved them since I was 13 in 1979 when I first heard heard Rick Lobster. Band was post punk, underground, college music. Loved them for over 40 years now. Yesterday went to their farewell concert in Las Vegas
Dance This Mess Around, 52 Girls, are my favorite.. This is an homage to 50s, early 60s monster movies.. they really capture that campy sound and feel of those movies.. . a lot of fun..
Let it out! This might have been the funniest review. Your eyes were saying WTF, then you felt the beat then the end you looked uncomfortable... haha. Great review.
I danced to this song at high-school dances when I was 14! Everytime he says down, down. We'd shrink down and lay on the floor and then start rising as the song became faster! Lol. Ahhh the 80's. I'm Canadian, so perhaps we are the only ones that did the floor thing! Lol again
And kids were jamming to this at school dances going well into the 90s. It played at *every* dance at my junior/senior highschool, from grades 7-12. People learned it as they passed through.
For the love of rock PLEASE listen to the studio version of ANY song that you are unfamiliar with so that you are reacting to the song and not any visual distractions. Then if you are compelled to listen to any live versions you will have something to compare it with and see how it is improved (or not). That’s how we did it back in the day!
studio versions NEVER are better, stop that nonsense... this is a fantastic version because it's live which means no studio tricks, no sound processing of any kind and so on. This is the band playing the music, direct and raw

omfg i've never seen this version of Rock Lobster and don't remember hearing that heavy scream at the end of this song. She was so loud you had to pause it :)
First time I ever saw them live I was certain I would be disappointed. I thought thet couldn't possibly duplicate some of those vocals and harmonies live. You can imagine I sat dumbfounded at the start of that show. They were so loud and clear. It seemed like their voices were ping ponging off every corner and landing in your soul. I left that show never doubting them again.
This seems to be a real live performance which is strange as official videos usually have the studio version of a song. However, it is remarkably close to the studio version except the mix is off and the volume of Fred Schneider's lead vocals are too low and are difficult to understand. I prefer the studio version but this is a great performance.
Omg you can play the first three cords of this song for either of my kids and they can name that tune lol they heard alot of the b-52's growing up it great house cleaning music. You hit this one on the head it's a silly fun song for dancing...♡
Loved this one for years and one day I put the album on loud (its printed right on the album PLAY LOUD). My girls came down and couldn't believe their mum had an album like this!!

This song was a breath of fresh air from the monotony of disco. It was like nothing else you had ever heard. What a great band, and my personal favorite.
Oh man, the B-52s are so fun! My dog & I were dancing along over here! I love your reaction. Priceless! I think you’d enjoy the songs Legal Tender and Private Idaho a lot too! (Also, DEVO goes well with the B-52s!)

Oh my so tired last night.....but can't believe missed it 😓. My step brother RIP turned my parents onto this back in late 79 and in turn I heard it and fell for it's uniqueness 🙌💗
The Bs got their start in the late 70s into the 80s into the start of the 90s. This is a great video of the raw baby B-52s. You bet your bottom that this song was played at EVERY party for..gosh, years. In fact, you will probably still hear the studio version at a pool party somewhere. It is iconic. I love this live version tho because it shows what a tight ensemble they were even from their early punk influenced, quirky days. I had the pleasure of seeing them live several times as they matured as a band and got even better and let me tell you, it was always an experience. I big ol' backyard party out of bounds experience! The girls have some of the most amazing voices and harmonies around. They are powerful vocalists and between the 2 of them they can make any kind of sound effect. If you want to see something from their more mainstream days that showcases the girl's voices try Roam or Channel Z or Deadbeat Club. I just really dig old, quirky Bs too. So much fun. Legal Tender, Party Out of Bounds, Dance This Mess Around, Private Idaho. I could really go on and on. If you really want to be impressed by another crazy live performance, go check out Big Bird live in Germany. Super talented bunch of creative people.
This is a really older video I'm not sure when. But I remember going to the clubs back in the early 80's and when the song would slow down. Everyone would slowly start going down on the floor on their backs and dancing on their backs until the music picked back up. It was a blast, and everytime the song was played by a DJ the dance floor would fill up and everyone would go crazy.
It definitely brought a smile to my face! I was LOLing at your reaction, but also just really enjoying your joy with the song and video too! Great reaction, and always, thanks for having an open mind, enjoying life and sharing that with us :)
So, I never knew that rock lobsters were a real thing. I thought it was just the song. Fast forward to Thailand and the iced sea food they put out in front of their restaurants so people could see what they were serving while walking by. Oriental Rock Lobsters (flat head) are terrifying. Their heads are flat and pointed, so it looks like this grey lobster tail and torso just chilling in the ice. Terrifying.
Those women remind me of the oyster calling contest they used to have at my hometown's Oyster Festival ! They would of been up there with the best for calling them in.
Omg. This song put them and Punk on the map. I remember digging this née wave, new sound soooo much! Seeing these guys in a live show was the epitome of fun. We had never heard or seen anything like it. Rock!
Hi Jay, When this song came out in 1978, we had so much fun on the dance floor. It was always packed when this song came on and when it got to the part where it slowed and he sang; down, down, everyone slowly went down and touched the ground in unison. Those were some good times. I miss them. Not a deep song, just a fun song to be silly to.
Saw them at West Point Military Academy in '84... So much fun. I danced and bopped around the whole concert. You can't sit once they start singing and the music started. Love "Dance this Mess Around".
You're right about not being able to keep still. I normally don't move around when I listen to music, but I find myself bopping around to this song. I loved dancing to this song back when it was popular.
The B’s created a sound. Been together 40yrs. Still sound amazing! Again I say... they created a sound , a vibe uniquely there own. That’s what great bands musicians do carve their niche into music history. You might hear a similar sound in someones song today instinctively your like, that so B 52’s!!! They NEED to be recognized for the talent that they are and the unique sound that is truly theirs. They have earned this...Let’s put them where they belong...THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME !
I LOVE them, have for decades. I finally got to see them 3 years ago, and had so much fun. I like to dress up for concerts, and even the security guard looked me up and down and said 'have a good time'. I said, "I will!"
That was the seventies, because Rock Lobster was the song that brought John Lennon back to the recording studio after his "time out" when his son Sean was very young.
I've seen them 4 times live when I was in college. Me and my friends would come to Kansas City to see them perform. At one time, they were ready to come out to perform (small outdoor arena), but it started to rain. One of the band members told us to "stay cool" and they handed out plastic sheets and showed Bugs Bunny cartoons until the rain stopped. Then they started the show!! They are so fun live!!!!!
My favorite song to dance to at school dances. They were so fun and unique when they came out. First time I remember hearing screams in a song. Forty years later still one my favorite groups.
As a guitar player of 10 years who listens and plays everything from Journey to Judas Priest to Metallica, I have to say that the Rock Lobster main riff is easily in the top 10 guitar riffs of all time. I love this song and I love seeing your reaction to it.
This was a big crowd pleaser on alternative nights at the clubs. A friend of mine used to tell the tale about the night he wore his brand new white Armani sportscoat out, strutting his stuff on the dancefloor to Rock Lobster. When they got to the down down down part, he dropped to the floor with everyone else, rolling around acting crazy. Down on the dirty bar dancefloor, and ruined his new jacket, the dirt and stains never came out. He wore the jacket the rest of the evening as a badge of courage. And we never let him forget about it either!
The greatest fun song ever! We were bustin' a move when this played in the clubs we All went cccrazy! Great memories, great energy, great fun. Yes, quirky and kitschy and rollin'. I will forever have guilt for what I put my mother through blasting this song over and over for hours while dancing in front of the mirror practicing my new wave moves for the clubs. Awesome 80s!
Turd Ferguson G’day mate. Yeah just started back at work so kinda hectic! Plus my notifications are haphazard to say the least. Anyways, how ya doing? Things all good your end of the pond? Looks a little crazy at home from this end. Trust this post gets to you and wishing you and the fam well.
They all lived in Athens, GA together and perfected this “thrift store chic” aesthetic which was popular with punk and new wave folks in the late 70’s early 80’s. The name B-52's comes from a particular beehive hairdo resembling the nose cone of the aircraft, which Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson wore in performances throughout the band's first decade. They were pulled heavily from beach music and 50’s rock-n-roll. The girls harmonies are legendary.
I remember in university, when this song would come on, the place would go NUTS!! Everyone was up dancing wildly and having a blast! And then down, down, down people would get low or even squirm around on the ground = then blast up and go crazy again... It's actually a brilliant song but you have to picture back in the day, what it was like!
"Rock Lobster" came out in 1979. I was in kindergarten, so I missed it. A couple years later, the next door neighbors had the album on record and I was dancing like crazy to it. The B-52s are a quirky and crazy college rock band from Athens, GA who are experimental and basically have no inhibitions at all, because they're all about fun. "My Own Private Idaho", "Dance This Mess Around", "Planet Claire", "Love Shack", "Roam", and "Good Stuff" are all classics of theirs.
Don't try to figure out the B-52s. Their songs are about style and the feel and it works really well for the kookiness of a good party. That's what they are mostly about -- just a good time.

1978 was a huge year for me musically - The B52's, DEVO, Elvis Costello and Kraftwerk all released music that changed music forever for me.
numbers by kraftwerk did it for me WOW.

If you really want to be impressed by another crazy live performance, go check out Big Bird live in Germany. Super talented bunch of creative people.
Very early
This is a really older video I'm not sure when. But I remember going to the clubs back in the early 80's and when the song would slow down. Everyone would slowly start going down on the floor on their backs and dancing on their backs until the music picked back up. It was a blast, and everytime the song was played by a DJ the dance floor would fill up and everyone would go crazy.
"It's like a Mating Call!" I just spit my iced tea all over the monitor! Thanks Bro, you got me good with that one!!
Terrifying.
What is cool with that song played live is that from one show to the next the animal calls are never the same.
Rock!
I loved the crowd they were just nuts dancing this song. B52s rock!
1978!! I remember where I was when I first heard it. Nothing like it then, nothing like it since!
Who knew the cowbell was in so many songs?!
You have the best reactions jay ✌
I agree! When he paused it I knew exactly what he was thinking by his expression! 😂😂😂
Next listen to their song Planet Claire
You always tap into the energy and capture the essence of whatever song you’re listening to. Thanks man.
It’s late 70s! Classic song! And, yes, this is a dance jam. “Down, down!”
They've been around since the mid 70's. They have a ton of hits. This was one of their early hits 1978.
Love your reaction! I love this song. I was in high school when this song came out. Fun, fun and fun!
I remember this being the JAM at some college parties!
Also love Kate like on Iggy Pop's "Candy"
The first time I heard this at a party I completely lost my mind! So much fun!
You have to hear the studio version. (Homage to Yoko Ono). It was pretty controversial back in 1978!!
Yep. I was the first up and dancing to this at one of their concerts. I think everyone else was in shock when they first came on stage.
That was the seventies, because Rock Lobster was the song that brought John Lennon back to the recording studio after his "time out" when his son Sean was very young.
The B52’s have great energy. They incorporated a fun 50’s and 60’s vibe
There is no one like them.
I saw the Talking Heads and The B-52s in Boston, 1977. Loved the B-52s up to now. Dancing just happens when you see them, great memories!
They're making the sound of a lobster when it's being boiled
As a guitar player of 10 years who listens and plays everything from Journey to Judas Priest to Metallica, I have to say that the Rock Lobster main riff is easily in the top 10 guitar riffs of all time. I love this song and I love seeing your reaction to it.
1978. Rocking through the 70's with all the long guitar solos of the 70's, this was a whole new angle. Just fun.
Whether it was Love Shack or Rock Lobster, the B-52s always brought the weird and the fun, and the music was always bangin'! Great reaction!
J, your reactions 😂This is one of my favs ❤️
The greatest fun song ever! We were bustin' a move when this played in the clubs we All went cccrazy!
Great memories, great energy, great fun.
Yes, quirky and kitschy and rollin'.
I will forever have guilt for what I put my mother through blasting this song over and over for hours while dancing in front of the mirror practicing my new wave moves for the clubs. Awesome 80s!
This is what happens when Pee Wee Herman puts his music hat on😉😂
Hey Horse! I’ve missed ya! 💖💖💖
Horse Footrot Pee Wee Herman! 🤟🤜❤️🇨🇦
