This is what the song is really about. When asked about the song, Cindy Wilson (the blonde singer, whose brother died a few years before of AIDS and was in the band) said "Roam" was a "beautiful song about death… It's about when your spirit leaves your body, and you can just roam."
Thank you, I appreciate that, as I've always listened... like looking at art, it's in the eye of the beholder and music is beautiful to some ears and ugly to others ❤❤
They ain't talking about traveling. It starts with a kiss, and then with only the love you feel, you take it hip-to-hip. They know how to ride the arrow all the way to the target. There's no wings or wheels on the exploring they're doing.
Yes! I would have assumed that a worldly man of culture like Black Pegasus would be familiar with what "around the world" references, and what the "wilderness" between the hips refers to...
@@perceptualvortex The song is about death and dying It's actually a tribute to Ricky Wilson, Cindy's brother who was in the band and died of AIDS. I put her quote in my first comment

This is one of those songs that just makes me smile, no matter what mood I’m in when it comes on. That is something to be treasured, since sometimes you need that.
If anyone hasn't done so, I strongly recommend you look up and listen to the isolated vocal video of this gem. These two sound like diamonds singing together
I never loved much about 80’s music in general but I always loved the B-52’s. Their quirkiness drew me in and their talent kept me coming back. Mercury refers to the thermometer and the rising temperatures in the warmer places people travel to. Great choice 🌺✌️
Love this band. Great song! This quirky and original band is out of Athens, GA and came out in the 70's with songs like "Rock Lobster", "My Own Private Idaho". Definitely a unique band with their own sound & style. They hit it big in the late 80's with their COSMIC THING album. It produced songs like this, "Love Shack" but you should also check out "Dead Beat Club" & "Channel Z". For some, the band is an aquirred taste. Personally, I just find them incredibly fun and make great party tunes. They came up with the song based on what Mark Twain had written - ""Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts,". Yes, Kate Pierson sang on R.E.M.'s song - "Shinny Happy People". Both bands are good friends and both from Athens, GA.
The first line, about Mercury in every degree, is about astrology. Mercury is the planet of travel and communication - also magic. The group, especially Kate Pierson, was into New Age spirituality. (I knew a guy who did sound for their concerts for some years, met several members of the group at a birthday party for Kate Pierson in 1990.) This brings back great memories, thanks.
I can't sit still when I hear this song. It is madly catchy!!! Kate Pierson also sings a great duet with Iggy Pop. The song is called 'Candy' and you shoudl definitely check it out. It's a beautiful bittersweet love song with two amazing vocalists. And you are right it is also her featured in REM's 'Shiny Happy People' song/video.
For another bite at the apple, try “Dance This Mess Around” and, like, the really EARLY performances. As in, 1980. That’s the group at their best, IMO. That’s how I knew them in high school.
i stinkin love your facial expressions! sometimes when you dead-eye the camera i shout out, "I KNOW, RIGHT?!!" this one was extra fun. cannot WAIT until you react to Rock Lobster. i think you're ready ;)
Hahaha, yeah we have the B52H here at Minot AFB, the newest modes are from 1961 in the current inventory. Nicknamed "The BUFF" for Big Ugly Fat F*@ker" or "fellow" for the kids. They have an amazing take off, unlike usual jet, they don't take of with a lil bit of a nose up pitch, they take off almost vertically to the ground, looks crazy to me watching it. Great reaction bro!! 40!
Kate Pierson (the redhead) was in a song with R.E.M. called "Shiny Happy People" that has a happy sound to it; but, the video shows the dark side to the song. It is very much worth the watch.
The time i saw them live in the late 80's Cindy, who js quite tall, was on heels that looked 8" high and her beehive hair must have added nearly 2 feet. She looked 8 ft tall!
As everyone is saying, “Rock Lobster” is vital. And Kate singing with REM is vital, too. But for fun, since Fred made such an impression on you, look for his solo tune “Monster” (Fred Schneider and the Shake Society). The video features Kate, Tina Weymouth (the bass player for Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club), Kate Pierson, NYC drag performer/playwright/actor Ethyl Eichelberger, and artist Keith Haring. It’s a hoot. Fred is awesome. 🤣
Planet Claire and Rock Lobster are the best songs. They were so cool in the 80s.❤ Planet Claire is best with the studio version... Rock Lobster can be the live version or the studio... ether one is good... if you ever happen to do Give me back my man, do the live version at the US festival in the 80s. ❤
This song is a huge and FAST ballroom Dance Street Hustle song. I love dancing to it. Only one faster that I've danced to is Their "Love Shack" and Will Smiths "Wild Wild West".
B-52 was also a hair style for women in the 60 also called a beehive hairstyle so even the name of the group has double meaning. I was lucky enough to meet them and even hang at their table on a few occasions as my bosses boyfriend was a well established DJ that knew them professionally . Even though I was young they really talked to and treated me as an equal that happened to like their music rather then a "fan". Fred is quite intelligent and one of the most quick witted funny individual's I've ever met. I tried to hide how smitten I was with Kate but I don't think I did a very good job of it even though no one ever said anything to me. What a grate time living in Athens in early to med 80's was. I've grown up in a number of major Collage towns but UGA was the first one I got to actually attend. The Athens club scene was lit and party's everywhere. I'm surprised I actually studied enough to graduate. REM is another hometown band from Athens so much so the played on campus for free several years even after becoming a national success. I wasn't a huge fan of them but like most big bands they had a few songs that no matter what your into you know are just grate songs even if your not going to go out and buy the Album.

My Man...... Going up to Denver on I-25,.. when you passed the north gate entrance to the Air Force Academy... they had that great big airplane up on the pedestals right by the gate that you could see from I-25..... That was a B-52..... You had to have seen it a 100 times or so.. I'm not sure if it is still there or not.................. Love from Widefield....
I think "Private Idaho", released from their 1980 album "Wild Planet", would be a good intro to early B-52's, but "Deadbeat Club" from the classic 1989 album "Cosmic Thing" is probably a more palatable hit to hear next. It's really good!!!
the B52's were a great party group that was more like a college group. They are one of my favorite groups. Listen to Rock Lobster, it is fun and crazy.

Rock Lobster next! Also Kate, the redhead, had two great duets: one with REM - Shiny Happy People and Iggy Pop - Candy

Kate Pierson, from the B-52'S did "Shiny Happy People" with R.E.M. She also did a duet with Iggy Pop for "Candy".
The B-52s are FUN.
The B-52's are one of those groups that will open your mind if you just go with it. They are unique.
I dare say I have never heard two female voices that sounded better together.
Not possible. Their voices are similar enough yet different enough that when combined it's just so powerful man. So so good
Only Ann & Nancy Wilson are in the same league
Well there's ABBA 😊

The B-52's are always fun to listen to. Fun lyrics, and great harmonies.

The B-52's and REM are both from Athens, GA. She does vocals with Michael Stipe in one of REM's biggest hits, Shiny Happy People.

REM & the B-52s were both local Athens GA bands at the same time.
For some reason when I listen to this song, my mind always goes to "Rush Hour" by Jane Wiedlin, one of her solo projects separate from The GoGo's
The B-52's name refers to the style of hair-do Cindy and Kate are wearing. Tall teased hair that resembled a nose cone on the bomber.
