@@jejo5586 You heard Love Shack in a club in 1983? This is surprising. I just did a google search and it turns out that Love Shack was released in 1989. I also remember seeing an interview of the band from around that time period - saying how the song emerged from a jamming session.
I love Rock Lobster! This is what was called alternative rock back in the day. I laughed so hard watching your reaction! Hahaha! It IS a crazy song! But crazy in a good way! Thanks for the laugh today! 😁
I was in highschool from 79-83. Yes, we danced to this. Yes, we went to the floor when he said, "down, down..." I have always referred to the B-52's as punk'ish / new wave'ish.
These guys were all about kitsch, camp, and retro. They were poor college kids in Athens, GA when that was a happening music town. They shopped at Good Will for all the retro clothes. The guitarist, Ricky Wilson, and the dark haired woman, Cindy Wilson, were brother and sister. Cindy was the only straight person in the group, everyone else was gay, though not all were out at the time. Ricky died of complications from AIDS in 1985 - only 32 years old. The band was devastated and took a couple years off. They came back in 1989 with the album "Cosmic Thing" which was an autobiographical album, and contained the hit "Love Shack". They just looked a little different by that point since it was 11 years later. Thanks for listening and sharing! Peace from SF
In high school we held parties that would make your head spin, thanks to the B-52s. We even had a girl jump out of a cake as we would fly down the stairs on our knees.
I enjoyed your review and it was fun to see and hear someone's response for the first time hearing this. I grew up on this (I'll be 54 next month), but I remember how this song got everyone on the dance floor at our college parties. And it wouldn't be complete without some of us falling to the floor as the lead singer did in the video. Those were really fun (and innocent) times. I'd give anything to go back.
If you think this sounds strange and funky 40 years later, imagine how it sounded back then. To people like us who had no idea WTF was coming. One of the signs of greatness is creating a sound that no one has ever heard before and no one has been able to duplicate since. B-52's, Oingo Boingo and Devo (all from that same time) are three bands who are great because they made something no one had ever heard before, and nobody has been able to or tried to replicate since. If you want to hear the greatest cover of all time, check out Devo's cover of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction." ua-cam.com/video/jadvt7CbH1o/v-deo.html
When I was in high school back in the early 80's, if you wanted to REALLY get the party rockin'.....you put on the B-52's!!! The greatest party band ever. You should react to their songs Party Out of Bounds, Planet Claire, and Give Me Back My Man. I have so many great, but hazy, memories of the B-52's music blasting in the background of major teenage parties!
B52s are criminally underrated. One of the most unique bands ever. So many great elements but love the guitar of Ricky Wilson (RIP) and the vocal harmonies of two of the coolest chicks ever Cindy Wilson and Katie Pierson! Check 'Planet Clair' and 'Give Me Back My Man'!
When I saw the title, I just knew this would be a great reaction and I wasn't disappointed...and had a good laugh at your facial expressions. I'm pretty sure I had the same reaction when it was released. It was definitely different that anything I'd ever heard. Their song "Roam" is my favorite, but it came around after they had become more mainstream.
These guys really gave DEVO a run for their money in the 80's. My brother and sis liked this, but loved You're Living in Your Own Private Idaho better.
Since it's a fun song it might go unnoticed that this band can rock. They are tight and they bring it. They came up in a punk scene and there's footage of them going hard at parties just sweating and pushing it. That's one of the best things about them for me.
Planet Claire is another great one by them. Love Shack and Roam are their biggest hits. Saw them live back in 2003 at an event at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They did an initial six song set, but since they were the final act, they played for 90 straight minutes and had people up on stage with them. Their music can be described as New Wave, neo-psychedelic lounge music, and party pop. They are a great, great, house/party band.
Looking back, it's hard to imagine now how different and weird and off-the-wall this was in 1978. (Hell, even after all this time, there still isn't anything else out there that sounds anything like it.) I remember seeing them do this on Saturday Night Live in 1980 and thinking even then, "Whoa, this is something TOTALLY new." It was the weirdest thing I'd ever seen, and possibly the greatest. It wounds like an old science fiction movie theme, and a novelty song, cartoon music, and a spy movie theme all rolled into one.
I first heard this when they performed on Saturday Night Live sometime during the 1979-1980 season. I thought they were the strangest band I'd ever seen. Punk and New Wave were still unknown in most parts of the country at that time.
The B52s were a fun band for sure. I think you'd probably like the official video for Love Shack. But if you react to more B52s, please react to Give Me Back My Man! Cindy Wilson's best video performance.
I feel the need...the need for more cowbell. Seriously though, this was the very first song with a dolphin as a background singer, which is obviously still a thing.
I remember when this first came out in the spring of 1980. My aunt and I loved it, but my mother didn't know what to make of the qirky song. The B52's were known for their throw back to the 1950's and 60's nostalgia with their clothes, and dance moves. It's really the only song I like from the B52's though. Just a fun, nutty little tune to act crazy with. Have a blessed night...🎶🎹💜
Ricky Wilson the guitar player for a few of their songs actually removed strings from his guitar to get that sort of "Beach Surfing Vibe" to the songs. By doing this he could easily play the base line for the band (They had no base player) as well as produce that funky feel. When the band reunited after the death of Ricky Wilson they actually added a base player to the line up which they never had before to play some of their older hits. If you look at the video closely you can see he is missing strings on his guitar. They did this for Private Idaho as well as a few others.
I don't have time to read all of the comments but my favorite song by the B-52's is the first track from their self titled debut album and is called Planet Claire. Featured in the Dreamworks movie Monsters vs Aliens.

This is total beach music....I am glad you have a sense of humor. The one woman on keyboards also used to wear a huge "beehive" hairdo that was at least 7 or 8 inches high. Hilarious! If you were on the dance floor for this song, when the singer sang "Rock Lobster, Down! Down!" everyone got down on the floor and squirmed around until the music came back up.

The B52's made some really freaking weird music but in interviews they admitted that most of it they did because it was funny. They were kind of a 'pop punk' band... sort of? Some of their music is freaking amazing though, but beware jumping down the B52's rabbit hole.
Yup I knew it lol your face says it all. Think I was 19 when I first heard this song and it was sooo crazy and sooo refreshing. Love Shack is from the same band!!! Fred Schneider can not be forgotten when you hear him. Kate Pierson sings a great song with Iggy Pop Called Candy... LISTEN TO IT!!!
The look on your face.....LAUGHING OUT LOUD. I wasn't in to them as much as my sister and her friend Steve was. They played the album at least 4 times when we partied And they were in their own punked out little world. The way they danced was hilarious. They were probably tripping, lol, I just wasnt aware at the time. Lol
Cindy Wilson and Kate Pearson harmonize incredibly well. You can really hear it on "Roam" or "Topaz." Kate has a distinctive voice and has done songs with REM and Iggy Pop.
Love the B-52's..Saw them here in Yuma in concert about 4 years ago, Their concerts are great and funny all at the same time 😊😊 I love their song ''Roam'' The B-52's did sing the song ''Love shack'' LOL
The B52s are a really fun party band. They were like nothing before or since. They did the song Love Shack as well as Private Idaho, Funplex, Give Me Back My Man, and Roam. They are quite talented and still do limited touring. They're a blast to watch!

Always a party song. I danced the hell outta this song at clubs and parties in the late 70's and early 80's. It was so much fun. Glad you are so open minded about different music.
Two years late, but as soon as I saw your eyebrows dancing to this 80’s gem I immediately had to like this video 😂…I wish I could love it, that was hilarious!
You had to be there. lol The band was an avant garde , performance art type band early on, with fantastic musical chops, vocals / harmonies, and just a lot of fun. As they went on, the music got more serious, and several works on the Cosmic Thing LP were lush, layered, and just smooth as silk. The two best to me were "Roam" and "Topaz." "Love Shack" was on that LP as well, and hearkened back to their party band, new wave roots. They're a fantastic band, and are still touring. My overall favorite by them is probably "Mesopotamia," great beat, dance able, fantastic thumping bassline, especially live. This is another band my older sister turned me onto. She and all her girl friends were dancing to it one night when they stayed over. She was a huge influence on my musical tastes.
I was in 12th grade. Tina Lange's dad used to own WRKR in Racine, WI. She brought a tape deck to English class and played this song. It was freaking awesome! I can't hear it without thinking of her.
The band is from Athens, GA, home to the University of Georgia where they were students when the band was formed. Also from this little college town: R.E.M., Widespread Panic, Drive-by Truckers, of Montreal, Neutral Milk Hotel, Azure Ray, Pylon, the Glands, Vigilantes of Love, Vic Chesnutt, Reptar, Apples in Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, Dead Confederate, John Barry, Ravenstone, Danger Mouse, Love Tractor, and so many more. Just an amazing little town that The NY Times said is the birthplace of indie music.
This was definitely one of those "just party fun" songs of my teens in the 80s! I can imagine the Addams Family and the Muensters dancing in their ghoulish ways to this one! LMAO What would Uncle Fester do to this one? What about Lurch and Grand Mama?
Ahh, Dude, you cracked me up! you had a similar reaction to what I had the first time I saw these critters on Saturday Night Live back in 1980. I thought it was a skit at first and then I saw a 45 of this at the store. I ended up buying and it drove my mother and sister nuts.
If you appreciated this one, check out Missing Persons "Destination Unknown", "Right Now" or "Walking in L.A." By the way, the genre was called 'Technorock' or 'Techno-Dance' because of the electronic synthesizers used. Similar groups included R.E.M., Tears For Fears, Eurythmics, Tom Tom Club and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. This later developed into the dance music scene with the likes of Madonna, Prince, Duran Duran, George Michael & Wham and Ah-Hah.
This song came out when I was 9-10 and I *loved* it. My aunt Denise played it for us. She was the best...she was in her mid-upper teens and always played the best music. She introduced me to Cars by Gary Numan, too. Possibly the same year.
"Rock Lobster", by The B-52s, was a major hit in the UK back in 1978, and influenced a lot of "New Wave" bands there at the time. The band has been around for a very long time. Kurt Loder once stated on MTV, that the female singers in the group, sing "Soul music, but from a different place".
I'm sitting here LOL LMAO watching your reaction to this song haha. I worked in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea down here in Florida when this song came out and we went absolutely berserk the first time we heard it. Great song by a great band. Two other songs I remember at the same time was Brass in Pocket by The Pretenders and Refugee by Tom Petty. Those were the three songs that they played the death and we loved it. Your reaction was very funny.
Ah the "New Wave" of the late 70s / early 80s. I was a DJ at a University radio station that focused on New Wave (nothing top 40). We played a lot of great bands before they "made it". The B-52s were one of those groups. Fun sound.
This song was a guaranteed get up and party song (back in the day). Their new wave/eclectic/dance sound filled each and every one of their albums (combined with Fred's humorous and "off beat" delivery). They came out of Athens Georgia and captured a world-wide audience. Sure, they aren't for everyone... but music is like that.
When this came out, John Lennon heard it, pegged the girls singing like Yoko, called up his SO and said 'we need to start making music!' And that's how we got Starting Over. This song was a huge hit in clubs. You could get everyone out on the dance floor having a great time. Classic New Wave pure pop joy.
Here in Brazil only three b52 songs were really successful. The first was Legal Tender (it seems that it was only here) that broke out in 1985. Followed by Private Idaho (this one still appeals to flash back parties today). And finally, Love Shack was very popular here.
Love the total shock on your face! B52’s were such a blast back in the day! They were in an underground cell all by themselves! Caught us all off guard!
When my boys were little, we would have dance parties in our living room to B52s songs. This was a favorite. It was so fun seeing them jumping around doing their interpretations of all the sea creatures lol.
The band members are actually Primary School Teachers who preformed at their conventions. Love Shack would have been a better choice. This was their first hit though. React to the Sweet ,Wig Wam Bam or Blockbuster. Thanks
Ricky Wilson was an amazing guitar player. Check out his tuning styles if you want to dive in deeper. Also, think about what was going on in 1977 when this came out?! Thanks for reviewing it
LOL!!!!!!!!! YOUR EYES!!!!!!!! This song is EXTREMLY unique . My personal favorite by them is " Love Shack " Got to reading more of the comments and totally forgot their song “ Roam “. Love Shack and Roam are very good. Not quirky like this song. Roam is a more serious kind of song or normal lol.
Just didn't get any more fun than this. I first heard this on the Dr. Demento show back in '78 and danced and rolled on the floor countless times after.
This song was always a favorite at house parties. Got everyone up on the dance floor! FUN!!
And down on the dance floor. Fun song.

And they were in their own punked out little world. The way they danced was hilarious. They were probably tripping, lol, I just wasnt aware at the time. Lol
When I need to laugh, I watch this video. Your reaction to this song is hilarious to me!
I was in high school when they were the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. It changed everything for me.
I feel strange not listening to this with a red solo cup in hand.
yessss I know the feeling
This sounds like a song you would hear in the old Batman tv shows. Great band and jam.
The B52s are a really fun party band. They were like nothing before or since. They did the song Love Shack as well as Private Idaho, Funplex, Give Me Back My Man, and Roam. They are quite talented and still do limited touring. They're a blast to watch!
Welcome to the world of Nu Wave music. Planet Claire and Dance This Mess Around are a couple of other fun ones.
"Choking a bird"-THAT is the Yoko Ono sound !
What kind of bird is a yoko ono
@@Modern-Renaissance-Man A Dodo bird.
@@jamesbrady8535 I'm dying.....that comment is so perfect!!
@@Modern-Renaissance-Man when Yoko was onstage with John and Chuck Berry she uttered the most horrific sounds. They turned her mic off. Horrible singer!
@@Modern-Renaissance-Man ...it’s the kind of bird that lands on a nest and then pushes out all four of the eggs...and when asked about it, says “it wasn’t me”
Your face was THE MOST entertaining part of all!!!
My wifi keeps freezing and it freezes your face! OMG! 🤣🤣🤣
TY they have hilarious videos love them they opened up for Ziggy Marley back in 90's
The worm has turned for you, friend. You can never "unsee" this video, ever!! I love watching people the first time they hear this!!
"Roam" by the B-52's is also a great song. Very positive vibe. Love your channel.
LATE 70'S EARLY 80'S STRANGEST MUSIC AND FASHION. BEST OF TIMES FOR THE WORLD TO EXPERIENCE THIS NEW TREND
Ridiculous song, but SO fun! I read that John Lennon loved this song because he felt that the B-52s 'got' what Yoko was trying to do vocally
The B-52s are an experience well worth the time. Brought back so many memories of house parties when I was younger. Thanks
I loved this song! I was a young teenager when this came out!
The B-52's were all Art students from the Univ of Georgia.
Couldn’t help but sing along to this one
Loved this song as a teen. Still always put it on when I feel I need to dance!
Ah the "New Wave" of the late 70s / early 80s. I was a DJ at a University radio station that focused on New Wave (nothing top 40). We played a lot of great bands before they "made it". The B-52s were one of those groups. Fun sound.
face it, dude, you LOVED the groove!!! And I loved to see your laughs, since the song really is goofy! (but soooo cool!)
Just started teaching when this came out. Loved watching the kids rock out to this at school dances.
This song is so good, its basically controlled chaos, its so much fun.
Love this band. Love Shack is probably their top song but they had many good ones like Roam, Private Idaho, and my personal favorite Quiche Lorraine.
Combination of new Wave, Punk and Rock-a-billy. The B52's were fun not deep
Thanks
Hell Raiser
The brunette is Kate Pierson. She's the one that sang with REM on Shiny Happy People.
I remember this song in high school...They played it at the night dances. So much fun to dance to.
You can't help but smile at this.
Ricky Wilson was an amazing guitar player. Check out his tuning styles if you want to dive in deeper. Also, think about what was going on in 1977 when this came out?! Thanks for reviewing it
They were just fun! Crazy, funky fun. That’s what we loved about them. Planet Claire is another good one.
