This song came to me after my son died at the age of 25 from a drug overdose. He struggled for years with health issues, mental demons and drug addiction. He sent this song to me 8 days after he died to tell me he made it to the other side and he’s at peace...his struggles were over and he was indeed with The Maker❤️
i feel that. my father died and i still meet him in my dreams. its not over. tania love never dies. not knowing you i love you. greetings from germany.
I love how Tim, despite his virtuosity, takes himself back and plays this super simple solo that sticks closely to the melody, knowing full well that what the song needs is humility, not ego.
"But from across the great divide, in the distance I saw light" I get chills every time at this point in the song. Everything about this moment...the dynamics, the vulnerability in Dave's voice, the passion behind the guitar...it all creates a surreal moment of absolution. Thank you Dave and Tim for your beautiful story telling. ❤
Back in 2008 I was a sophomore at Salem State College in Salem, Ma. The nicest thing I owned was the stereo in my beat up 1994 Mazda Protege. I had one CD and it was a Dave Matthews live album (I forget which one exactly). When I hear this song it takes me back to the nights in college when I would go and get in my little beater and this song would be on. The car was cold and stale. I’d wait for the windows to defrost and listen to this on repeat. Without fail I would get lost in this song ever single time.
I haven't heard this version in years, and a lot has happened in my life since then. I got as far as "I'm a stranger in the eyes of the maker" before I completely fkn lost it.
God bless you brother. You may have felt like a stranger in the eyes of the maker, but surely, you are not. I wish you all the best. May Jesus's peace be with you always 🙏
Beautiful. Absolutely amazing. This song is music's connection between the heavens and the earth. When Tim goes into his solo it is the definition of LOVE.
Oh my goodness, this is the sweetest rendition of this song. So touching right down to the core of the soul. Thanks guys for making this magic happen over and over.
I could not see For the fog in my eyes I could not feel For the fear in my life From across the great divide In the distance I saw light every word is simple truth! thank you DMB!
That moment when you've just met a person and discover he/she`s a fan of DMB and think: "This person clearly appears to be both intelligent and charming, I could most certainly engage an elevated conversation with him/her." Cheers from Mexico!
I have known about Dave Mathews since the early 90's but for some reason I never paid much attention. About two days ago I watched him perform "Bartender" and though holy s**t he is so talented! He can produce the best music with the littlest amount of effort and make it look so easy. I am so glad I have finally seen the light, thank you Dave!
If you know the power of the Lord "The Maker"... You know the truth and glory of our Lord, then you know how beautiful this song is and how much truth lies in the words of this song. Dave and Tim nailed the beauty of it's meaning.
Just saw DMB in Connecticut. Two Step, Dancing Nancies, #41, and Halloween. I can safely say that Tim is one of, if not the most, underrated guitarists out there.
Love Dave Matthews and I love this song The Marker especially when Amos Lee sings it with Dave. Thank You Jesus for this Beautiful song and music 🎶 that You let them perform all Glorly goes to You🙏🏽🕊
Oh, oh deep water, black and cold like the night I stand with arms wide open I've run a twisted line I'm a stranger in the eyes of the Maker I could not see for the fog in my eyes I could not feel for the fear in my life From across the great divide, In the distance I saw a light Of John Baptist walking to me with the Maker My body my body is bent and broken by long and dangerous sleep I can't work the fields of Abraham and turn my head away I'm not a stranger in the hands of the Maker Brother John, have you seen the homeless daughters Standing here with broken wings I have seen the flaming swords There over east of Eden Burning in the eyes of the Maker Burning in the eyes of the Maker Burning in the eyes of the Maker
This song was in the movie "Slingblade" -- I knew I'd heard it somewhere else... Daniel Lanois did it himself for the soundtrack -- it's a great song no matter who does it... Good Stuff all around.....
Dave just puts his heart and soul into every song he plays. You can hear it in his songs and see it in his eyes. A fantastic performer who I have not missed in 10 years!
Saw DMB open for Phish at Oak Mountain in Pelham, Ala. in 94. DMB joined the boys onstage for the encore and performed The Maker out of a Drums jam. It was beautiful.
The center influence that decided you and you’re face and eyes, his face shines on you with your life and the chance to make the choice you’ve always had the key to the shackles, you’ve just needed to be told to see with your eyes and feel with your heart ♥️
One of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Love songs about God and Our Lord🙏🏽 Absolutely love Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds and I absolutely the version with Amos Lee could listen to him and Dave Matthews forever. If this song doesn’t bring you closer to God nothing will. We definitely need to listen to it in the sad times with the virus 🦠 going no leadership. Bless Elect President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Man, I love playing this song so much that I often screw up the timing because I get so, so deep into the song that I stop paying attention to the timing and just get tunnel vision! Great, Great song!
Me too - it's very uplifting. We can experience a personal spirituality from certain things like this I think. Logic is great, but if that were the only thing we operated by, I don't think we would have any compassion.
After yesterday this is what I needed to hear and would like to share. No words can help what all the friends and families of those who were loss in Conn. but this song eases ones' mind a bit. Absolutely beautiful
I just watched the Daniel Lanois (sp?) original version, and I'd much rather this version. Idk, maybe I'm just used to the angelic Dave voice and the Tim and Dave dueling guitars... It seems to speak to me so much more with much more conviction and less other stuff going on than the music. Js Great cover, Dave and Tim. Absolutely beautiful.
It's a shame music isn't made this way anymore. Ya know music with feeling and soul behind it. A few artist have popped up that are good but music like this....like bb king or clapton....or beatles or ac/DC etc. Etc. Dave your good dude please keep going till you leave. Music nerds you lol.
Steve Crews heres something to think about. I.think Daniel Lanois recorded this in the 80's, I know this song from Jerry Garcia singing it in the early 90's..and heres Dave covering it probably in late 90's........there will always be musicians who work to share their heart and soul and hope they find people who care to listen
Steve, I've recently stumbled upon Jon Butler, and a group Kaleb. they're satisfying my need for genuine music. Don't know that they will ever rise to the level of the names you mentioned, but they satisfy that desire for "real" music that won't fit the radio formula.
Cool cover of this Daniel Lanois song! His song helped me through a very troubled time of my life along with other songs he produced..anyways I enjoyed this cover post..thank you 🙂

At 2:57 it becomes more than music. It's cosmic, a force of nature. A feeling.
The love of God!
My son and I had the privilege of hearing 👆🏼right before he was diagnosed with Leukemia…. WOW! No WORDS! 😢
I wish the best for you and your son 🙏
My son played this at church. When he was dying.
oh darn. sorry for your loss. cannot imagine the experience
😥so sorry, sending good vibes
😢
So sorry, he is in the hands of the Maker.
He's in a better place then we are! I miss him So Very Much
Every song Dave touches turns to gold. And when Tim tags along, just forget it.
It is not just the notes.....but the atmosphere. They nailed it. Pure magic with two guitars.
Even better when you hear the original and imagine how Dave saw this simple beautiful rendition in it
I’ve been a homeless daughter. This song means so much to me.
Me too.
.a bride of the king though.
Be strong! You are a jewel and people love you! From hard times makes us soft in expression

By His mercy we can become Christians may He do His will in us

This song gives me hope.

Great version of the Maker. Originally released by Daniel Lanois in 1989. It is off his Acadie album and still stands as a classic.

Brilliant solo ... like tears falling from the fret board

I struggle with this song...i love it...but its so symbolic and cryptic that i have a hard time making up my min about its meaning. Go Dave!
My God, oh so beautiful

60 people are strangers in the eyes of their maker.
This and Grace is Gone are my favorites. I love the simple acoustic sound both guitars and Dave's voice combine to make..
