Note: due to the way it was recorded, this video will sound much better in headphones or true stereo speakers.
Tony Rice did as much for the acoustic guitar in the 20th century as anyone - Andres Segovia, Django Reinhardt - and his album Manzanita is an absolute command performance from the first to last note. This is the song that starts it off, with the intro as he plays it (or as close as I can get). Tony passed away not too long ago, but his music was and will remain a towering influence on guitarists everywhere. This song was originally written by Herb and Nikki Pedersen, and first recorded by The Seldom Scene in 1973.
A big thanks to Gabe for joining us for this one.

About Josh Turner Guitar
Joshua Lee Turner is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer based in Brooklyn, New York. Josh is best known for his UA-cam channel Josh Turner Guitar, where he has been posting eclectic cover performances and original music since he started the channel in 2007 at age 15. Josh now tours internationally in support of his own original music, as well as with long-time collaborator Carson McKee, as the folk duo The Other Favorites. In August, Josh released Public Life, his second full-length album of original music.
he's not tony rice. he's not billy strings. he's josh turner, and man, can you play and sing. just great.
If the old train sounds this good, I wonder what the new train sounds like.
A gentleman and a scholar I see.
Old is always better :)
It has microtransactions.
Tony would be pleased
Anybody who scorns at country, listen to these wizards!
Whatever you play is causing a celebration day !!!!!
Tony Rice would be impressed with the licks and the arrangement! Ah, just wonderful!
I am just so continuously impressed with Josh Turner’s seemingly unlimited talents.
plus his unlimited supply of talented friends
I am an old feller who has put much time and effort into playing your sort of music and I gotta tell you, you guys put a huge grin on my face and a tickle in my heart. Thanks.
I love the addition of Gabe
Purty good fellas!
Great old Seldom Scene number. A Herb Pederson song.
For anyone who doesn’t read the description normally, unless you have a good set of speakers, do yourself a favour and listen through headphones to appreciate the true audio wizardry on this video!
Thanks!
Makes a huge difference! Thanks!
I use headphones for EVERYTHING. Besides being hard of hearing, and my laptop having crappy speakers, I learned long ago that headphones bring out things we normally wouldn't hear. There are some music videos that they don't add any improvement to. LOL
magic on the SH hd1! :D
Thanks for suggestion! Did just that - WOW! Sounds fabulous. How does it sound so good .....did recording to 1/4” tape have that big an impact, or is it just that they have good instruments and they are darn good (which we all know)? This sounds as good or better than what comes out of high priced studio and recording sessions. Nice job guys!
The 2 dislikes are the tracks of the train
YEE HAH! Good ol' MUSIC like they use to play. Gabe sure can play the fiddle! The Other Favorites on my "A" list.
Thanks!
Am so loving Gabe ❤️
Most special contemporary band♥️🎸🎖
Tasty treat on a cold, blowy, snowy day in the North.
Old Train oh won't you come and take me away
. . . to a warm and sunny day.
Everything these guys do is gold!
don't forget platinum and silver, too!
May I be the first to say ... Wow. I don’t know much but my ears are pretty discerning and that, my friends made a cold, dark Winter’s day much nicer. Thanks.
What magick is this, you ALIENS! You’re not human. What, two guys + Gabe, just throwing a tune like this together and pooping out gold? Crying foul, I’m telling mom, deep fake, no fair...no fair haired able-bodied musicians on the music video tip can match the musicianship. TOF indeed.
So glad Gabe is on this one, that double bass gets me every time!
Grandissimi musicisti !
Been listening to Josh since the beginning, this group should put out a bluegrass EP 😍
These young men are the best of the best; pure Americana. They make me proud to american. Carry on guys, keep the music flowing. A lot folks love to hear it, and I'm certainly one those. 🤗🎶🎵🎵🇺🇸🇺🇸
Ah Josh...very very..good !single and players ..I love
Tony Rice would be proud to hear your version of "Old Train". To hear you guys play it together would have even been better. Josh, your triad cords & Tony blending his floaters weaving in & out would have been a sound for thirsty ears! Even though Tony has passed his playing is alive in your version of Old Train. You honor his memory.
1:13 to 1:23 Happy Josh!
A beautiful visit from a representative of the Avalon Jazz Band!
Thanks so much!
Thank you for the big smile you just put on my face! 😃
Just save my day! Gabe Terracciano is unbelievable! I hope you and your family are safe and healthy!
the bassist and fiddle player are twins!
Better and better and always pleasant to listen... to the helmet!
Tony would be proud.
10 Points from Austria !!
This is serious stuff! In memoriam Tony Rice
einfach super klasse
I have two guitars, a banjo and mandolin. I've just thrown petrol over them and set them alight. These guys are brilliant!
I love the expressions when they play. So much better than just a recording. Josh loves it when the fiddle player nails it, then the fiddle player appreciates the complement.
josh turner sait tout faire il est incroyablement surdoué et en
plus il a l, air très intelligent et sympa. Attention ⛔️ c, est pas une quiche , souvent avec des amis !!! de son niveau stratosphérique ce garçon. 🎵🎵🎵🎸🎸🎸🎸🇲🇨
Outstanding! I’m sure Tony Rice would agree!
All three of them handle their instruments with great talent, but I think Terracciano's playing is outstanding in this song. I've been paying attention to his work for a while. Off the hat to you guys, thanks for being there. :)
I never heard anything so beautiful.
Also, it should be noted that this song was written by Herb Pedersen, who also wrote everybody's favorite Seldom Scene song, "Wait a Minute." Which Josh and Carson should cover, sooner than later.
The bluegrass is still some of the best music you guys produce. Harmonies are always super tight and nothing makes you feel like a awesome bluegrass song. Keep on rolling!!!!!!
I have been listening and passing on their brilliance to others!!! No one like them for talent. Harmony, voices and instruments are impeccable!!!
Wow awesome i love your group jamming. A new friend here a big clap clap. Friends forever.
I'm blessed...just sitting here checking out music on UA-cam & this popped up.
excellent! harmony vocals from the fiddle player are great.
Mighty nice a pickin an a sangin.
There are a lot of amazing things to say about you guys, (your talent, your song selection, your originals, your technical skills, your chemistry) but the most incredible thing of all is your appeal to all generations. I am sure it is directly related to the respect you bestow on the music from all generations. It is a common thread in so many of your wonderful and deserved comments. I am 67 and my older brother (who will be 70 soon) is the one who introduced me to your vast treasure chest of music. As our 90 year old Dad would have said; Thank You Thank You Thank You!
The fucking harmony is so on point.
I love country!
I love how they have kind of a “yours, mine, and ours” arrangement. They each have their own songs as well as songs by the Other Favorites. So they get to do what they want without having to worry about anybody getting jealous or disgruntled.
BRAVO! Greetings from Denmark
Seeing Gabe in the videos can only mean that the album is coming soon! Can’t wait!
Well, that was awesome. Josh, is there anything you CAN'T play? Bluegrass, classic country, classic rock, old standards, and your own stuff. What a range, what a repertoire! First I listened to this on my phone as usual and noticed the far away, tinny sound. Then I took your suggestion and listened through earbuds. Wow, what a difference! The sound really came alive. Compliments to Carson and Gabe as well. Well done, gents!
Awesome!”👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️❤️
The best thing ive heard since the last time these guys played
Carrying on for Tony Rice really well.
Yeeeee-Haaaaaaa. The talent just keeps pouring out of you guys. Thank the Lord for your fingers!
I don't know who you are, I've even seen your channel before. But I'm glad youtube brought me here
You should check out the rest of their catalog. Great covers and originals!
You are in for a treat!
You dont know what youve been missing all these years😊
Hi, Jese keep watching the Other Favorites / Josh Turner & Carson and you won't regret it.
Not a fan of Country music - but I appreciate good music and this is better than good -- excellent harmonies/music and I think any country boy would say you nailed it. This is REAL country music and Roy Clark would give you a thumbs up over the garbage they spit out today.
It's actually bluegrass music, which came before country music.
Amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing
Love. This. So. Much.
Some of those guitar licks are otherworldly.
Take 5 is definitely a keeper 👍
heyyyyaaaaa, how awesome they are
“Pretty tight” is an understatement Carson!!!
Listened three times in a row!
I love when people smile due to their playing enjoyment. ☺️
Gold as usual. 💯
Geez boys ya tore the arse offa that one eh! Niiiiiice!
Wonderful! Hello from Rome.
Please more Tony Rice!
SWEET! What a bluegrass groove! Thanks.
That’s a damn good song.
God Josh your pickin get better everytime i watch your vudeos.
The binaural audio on this is mind blowing. I feel like the three of you are stood around me whilst I sit here with headphones on!
This was excellent on all fronts. I loved the fiddle and bass playing. But Josh's guitar work was the highlight for me (surprise surprise).
l love your hair parted Josh..looks good😀
and Carson you look awesome with your geled up hair.😀 great happy song guys! love the big bass & violen too.
Carrie from Australia.xx💖💖
Thank you for your wonderful performance. TONY will be happy in heaven too.
Yee-Haw! That was great.
Ab-solute-ly awesome, Bluegrass Rules, Thanks
September 2023 Awesome 👍👍🇨🇦
oh my god what the heck, it's so good so pure so alive
When God gave out Talent seems these boys got a small countries worth !
Another masterpiece.
This is SUPURB bluegrass! Tight harmony and fantastic instrumentals! AWESOME! MORE!
Man I had the biggest dumb grin on my face through the whole thing, such good vibes. And a great mix too
More more more of this! More! Love it!
Just finished work, sitting in a train in cold snowy Germany and comming across this beauty of a video. Thank you guys, your videos always brighten up my days!
SWEET!!!! Top-Notch. That felt OK....
This just proves that the guitar is a slight portion of the tone and the player is the most of it.... As that intro sounded spot on, exactly like Tony's! Well done
Josh and Hozier are my two biggest motivations to become a better guitarist. They intimidate me at first, then I think, “well no, I know the basics of that, and I’ll get there someday.” For anyone in a guitar learning curve rn, keep going. Seriously. It will pay off.
Great, i like it very much.
Tony lives on, great performance
Just outstanding fiddle playing
old and in the way
These new locomotives make the old train walk. Congrats.
COVID hair too? When you put that rhythm section together for next years tour, add Gabe. Loved it, boys.
Their Harmonies were excellent!
Nailed the Tony intro….awesome.. and cool original guitar breaks…
WOW! Just amazing!
