Instructions
00:00 Introduction
00:16 Preheat oven to 350F
00:21 Place chopped chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for 30 seconds. Stir well, and then return to microwave and heat in 15-second increments, stirring well in between, until chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Set aside.
01:18 Using an electric or stand mixer, cream together butter, oil, and sugar until light and fluffy (about 30 seconds on high speed).
02:09 Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Pause as needed to scrape down sides and bottom of bowl.
2:32 Stir in vanilla extract.
02:40 In a separate, medium-sized bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
03:17 Using a spatula and gently hand-mixing, alternate adding flour mixture and buttermilk, starting and ending with flour mixture and mixing until just combined after each addition. Do not overmix!
05:59 Pour 1/3-1/2 of the batter into a separate bowl and add chocolate mixture. Stir until completely combined and batter is evenly chocolate.
06:46 Generously grease and flour two 8" round cake pans (you may instead use 9" pans, just keep in mind you will need to bake the cake for about 5 minutes less than indicated). Set aside.
07:28 Alternate adding vanilla and chocolate batter to each pan, evenly distributing batter into each pan. Use a knife to swirl for marbled appearance.
08:25 Bake on 350F (175C) for 30 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out mostly clean but with a few moist crumbs (do not over-bake or the cake will be dry, you want there to be a few crumbs).
09:05 Allow cake to cool for 15 minutes before carefully inverting onto cooling rack to cool completely before frosting.
Chocolate Frosting¹
In a microwave-safe bowl, microwave chocolate chips at 15 second intervals, stirring between intervals, until chips are completely melted. Set aside and allow to cool slightly (about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally).
Cream room temperature butter with an electric mixer. Stir in slightly cooled chocolate and beat well.
Gradually add sugar, scraping down the sides and bottom of bowl occasionally.
Sprinkle in salt and vanilla extract, stir well.
Gradually add heavy cream, increase speed to high and beat for 1 minute.
09:25 Spread a thick layer of frosting over the top of one cake round and sprinkle with mini chocolate chips. Top with second cake round and evenly frost cake. Slice and serve.

Guys PLEASE give this a shot! She is 100% right, this is the softest pillowy cake! I think the ppl who get it wrong are inexperienced in baking tbh. I’ve been baking and selling cakes for years and it came out superb! Great taste and texture ♥️
Thank you so much! :)
Yes this is written by a kid but hear me out!! I really like baking so I gave this recipe a shot, it was awesome! I’ve made it once and this is my second time, I’ve made several cakes and this is my all time favorite.
I'm so glad you've enjoyed it so much! It's awesome that you are baking as a kid! :)
Tremendously educational. I've been more about cookies and brownies, but have wanted to try some cakes. This video answered a lot of questions. Thank you for being so in-depth!
Looks delicious!😍

I've never made a marble cake before, this one looks great!
I hope you love it! 😊
I was literally talking with my family about how to make a marble cake, I can’t wait to try this recipe!
I hope you love it! 😊
@@SugarSpunRun we just tried it, my S/O loved it but I believe I over mixed it, it ended up with a pound cake feel, very dense but doesn’t taste like corn bread! Also I didn’t like that I used semi sweet bakers chocolate in it, it gave the chocolate a really bitter taste to me. I know for future tries!
❤ Amazing recipe! I made it and loved it! ❤
Thank you! I'm so glad it was such a hit! :)
I love the recipe
Thank you so much! :)
Love it thanks for sharing your recipe ❤🌹
You're welcome! Enjoy! :)
I will be baking this for my birthday in February! Thanks Sam!! ❤️
Great choice! Have fun! ❤️
@@SugarSpunRun thank you!!
I made this cake topped with chocolate ganache, for my family, they loved it!!!
Super delicious and moist!!!Thank you for sharing your recipes 🌸🌸
I am so glad everyone enjoyed it so much! :)
I made this today and it was super delicious!!! You are the best. You should think about writing a cookbook.
Thank you so much! 😊
Hi..do you have a substitute for buttermilk or can I use whole milk?
Thanks so much for this amazing recipe!
You should also definitely do a Red Velvet cake recipe! Thanks again!
Thank you so much! I am actually getting close to perfecting my red velvet cake so hopefully I will be able to film it soon. :)
This will be my next project, it looks intimidating, it could go south lol. Hopefully it won't. Thanks for sharing will keep you posted. Fan from Nova Scotia
Keep the faith! Just follow Sam's recipe and video advice and you should be good to go!
Awesome recipe! I had a question. Can we use cocoa powder if we don’t have chocolate at home?
Made this! Messed up half my marble but it was still delicious! lol maybe next time it'll be "marbled"
I'm glad you were still able to enjoy it! :)
I JUST pulled the cake out of the oven and mine doesn’t look like yours I don’t think I added enough batter to the chocolate but I think it will turn out find :) I’m so excited to try some!
O no! 😔 I hope it still tastes good.
Im so excited to try this ! Can I use corn oil or would you recommend canola oil?
Any neutral oil will work here. :)
Hi Sam! Thanks for sharing! Can I use semi sweet chocolate chips in place of the semi sweet chocolate bar?
That should work here.
Thank you. Looks stunning.❤ Can i make this particular buttermilk for the cake at home or would it be preferable to purchase the buttermilk from the store?
You can make the buttermilk substitute. I prefer to use the store bought stuff if I have it because it's always just a bit thicker than when I make it at home. :)
So if I cover the top of the cake generously, will I still have some buttercream leftover for decoration on my 9 by 13 inch sheet cake??
You may want to increase the recipe for the frosting a little bit to ensure you have enough. :)
Looks awesome! Can i make this in a bundt pan?
Yes! You will just want to keep an eye on it since the baking time will be different than what is listed. 🙂
Hi my lovely i love all your recipes i want to bake this marble cake can i freeze it ?
Thank you so much! You shouldn’t have any issues freezing this cake. 🙂
@@SugarSpunRun thank you so much and thank you for your reply 🥰
I need a sheet cake- is this about equivalent to one box mix? My pan holds 2 cake box mixes....
Yes, a typical box cake makes a 2 layer 8 inch cake. 😊
Can you use cake flour instead of all purpose flour for this recipe if so would cake flour give it a better taste?
You can use cake flour, but it won't change the taste at all. Cake flour will give you a tighter crumb. If you substitute cake flour you need to make sure to substitute it properly. If using weights, the weight is the same. If using cup measurements, you need 1 cup + 2 TBSP of cake flour for every cup of all purpose flour. :)
@@SugarSpunRun Thank you so much I appreciate your response and can't wait to try this recipe for my son first birthday 😊
Would this recipe work good with 3 6-inch pans?
Sure thing! :)
After making this cake how long will be it fresh to eat?? Thank you so much for the recipe. Will be trying this tomorrow!!! Very educational btw☺️
I typically recommend using it up by the end of a week. I keep it in an air tight container at room temperature. Obviously the fresher it is the better but it should still be really good for about a week. :)
Is this enough buttercream for a 9 by 13 inch chocolate sheet cake?
Yup! Enjoy! :)
This is undoubtedly a silly question, but how are you able to cream your butter without it flying everywhere? I end up using my stand mixer because no matter how large a bowl I use ... and my butter is softened ... it takes forever and ends up everywhere?
I had found that the shape of the bowl makes a big difference. I started with a 4qt Pyrex bowl which was wider and shorter and things would get messy. Got a 3qt stainless bowl which was narrower and taller, and in spite of being a smaller bowl by volume, it works SOOOOOOOOOO much better with my hand mixer. The height helps a LOT to keep the mess at bay!
you are right
If I don’t have semi sweet chocolate can I use cocoa powder instead and if so how much
Unfortunately I don’t recommend using cocoa powder with this recipe because it dries out the cake 😕
Will this work well for a four layer 8 inch cake ?
If you double the recipe, yes 😀
How could I make marble cupcakes with this recipe ?
You can just scoop it into cupcake liners. I'm not sure of a bake time on it though. The temperature will remain the same. :)
Question....my yellow and white cakes always come out really moist and delicious BUT everytime I make a chocolate cake they always seem to come out rather dry.....how can I get my chocolate cake to be as moist as my yellow and white cakes?
Use my chocolate cake recipe and it'll be perfectly moist! ua-cam.com/video/rXpWiuHpNhg/v-deo.html
Can I use a bunt cake pan to bake this cake???
Yes! You will just want to keep an eye on it since the baking time will be different than what is listed. 🙂
can we use salted butter???
You can. You will want to reduce the salt by 1/4 teaspoon. 😊
I made the cake with the frosting tasted delicious but in the frosting the sugar didn't seem well blended . Still there were some sugar particles and I think the frosting could you some less sugar
I’m glad you enjoyed the cake. Typically mixing the frosting a little longer will help get that sugar worked in. If you cut the sugar your frosting won’t be as sturdy
How long does it take for the marble cake to cool before putting on the icing? Do you recommend cooling at room temperature or in the fridge?
It really depends on your environment. It can take a good while to cool. Just touch it occasionally to see if it's still hot. Always let it rest at room temperature. :)
Can I freeze this cake?
You shouldn’t have any issues freezing this cake. 🙂
@@SugarSpunRun All your cakes are wonderful! I have baked your strawberry, yellow, and white layer cakes with great success. I can hardly wait to bake the marble cake! Watching your great videos guarantees that the cakes turn out perfect. Thank you for sharing and teaching us!
Halfed the recipe but ended up adding less milk and a bit more flour to get the same consistency as shown in the video the cake, turned out good taste wise but my cake cracked from the top. Dw what I did wrong
Hmm sounds like the cake was too dry from not enough milk and too much flour, or the cake was over-baked. You shouldn’t need to alter the ratios to half the recipe. I’m glad you still enjoyed it. 😊
I made this recipe today, why was this in my recommended? LOL this always happens
UA-cam knew what you needed to make. 🤣
I made your white cake it was a disaster I had to throw it away it exploded all in my clean stove helppppp
I’m really confused as to what you mean here. How did a cake explode? Did it overflow the pans? If so you may have overfilled them
@@SugarSpunRun no it was like a souffle it expanded then fell
I wonder if it was over-mixed? That or something was accidentally mismeasured? It shouldn’t do that
@@SugarSpunRun well I used cake flour that could have messed it up
How much cake flour did you use?
O
Is this the same vanilla cake recipe, everyone loved when I made that all your recipes are actually "easy" unlike other peoples lol
Yes! I think you'll love this one too 🙂
Mi jjkkjui
ugggggggggh, I was all gung ho to try this recipe until you kept stating that it was soooo important to not over stir or under stir. GAH. Who wants to take that chance? NOT ME. Sorry.
I hate how you say 1 half cup 😂 I almost added 1 1/2 cup of butter but I thought that was way too much so I stopped myself
How would you say it?
@@SugarSpunRun half cup or single half cup. But I’m Canadian so that might be a little cultural language barrier. Just took them out of the oven they look good 😍 first time making a cake from scratch
I made this cake yesterday sorry to say I don't like it.
I’m sorry to hear that. 😞
@@SugarSpunRun the cake is ok. But, its the texture I dont like.
I believe it should have baking soda.
I think the oil makes the cake too heavy.
My daughter and grand daughter like the cake but, my son tokd me the texture he didn't like.
I don't mean to offend you sorry.
I made many cakes over the years.
Not everyone has the same tastes and that’s ok. I’m not offended. 😊
