    Omg!!! This is so crazy, I am from Alberta but am currently finishing my dental hygiene program in Ottawa and have always dreamt about being in dentistry since I was little too! Now that I am nearing the end of school I am trying to figure out my next move and just remembered there were direct entry schools that were international! Anyways your video was super helpful! Hello Alannah! Great video! Is there any requirement in shadowing experience and letter of recommendation for dental school in Australia? Would you say dental school in Australia is less competitive than the ones in Canada and the US?

    • @alannahanita-marie
      @alannahanita-marie  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Wini! There is no requirement for shadowing hours or letter of recommendation. All that is required is a bachelors degree (plus the pre-requisite courses for the school you apply to) and the Canadian or American DAT.
      I wouldn't say that it is less competitive, I would just say that you are "competing" with a smaller pool of applicants than you would be for Canadian and US schools. So it all depends on the pool of applicants when you apply.
      Hope this helps! Good luck 😊

    Awesome video Alannah! I know this is like 2 years late lol, but I just found this video and I have a couple questions!
    I find the timing of the application process really weird.
    So applications are due in july, and acceptances come out early september. You mentioned that you wear planning to take extra courses, so did you drop out of them because you got in? Also, did you have a lease signed cause you thought you where going to stay at school for another year?
    Because I am planning to do the same thing, apply but if I don't get in I would want to take 1 more year to improve grades etc...! But if I end up getting in I just dk what to do with the courses I signed up for lol
    thanks for the help :D

    • @alannahanita-marie
      @alannahanita-marie  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Colbe! Now that you mention it, the timeline does seem confusing. When I applied to dental schools in Canada for the first time I completed the applications during my 4th year. However, due to the way the application systems work for some schools in Ontario, this meant that they were looking at my top 2 years NOT including the year I applied within. So, although my 4th year marks were among my highest, they unfortunately were not considered on my application and instead they looked at my 2nd and 3rd year marks (which had some of my lowest marks due to a low second year GPA). I graduated from my bachelor's degree in June 2017 and took time off of school as I planned on applying again to Canada during the next cycle so that they could include my 4th year marks in the application, which I believe would have helped a ton. During this time off I also completed my application to Australia and applied to multiple schools in the US. From Sept-Nov I received offers to interview in the US and also received my offer of acceptance to Australia, which I ultimately accepted!
      So I didn't have the issue of having to drop out of any courses since I took that break from school anyway. If things didn't work out at that time I would have enrolled soon after that in both extra courses and taking my DAT again! I hope this makes more sense now as to what the timeline was and why I didn't jump into extra courses at the time. 😊 Let me know if this is still confusing! Good luck with everything!

      @@alannahanita-marie Thank you so much for the help!!! That makes so much more sense! I am literally having the same situation where I want to use my 4th year grades because my second year grades are lower (covid :( ), so I was planning to also take an extra year instead of a gap year ( I am in 3rd year now, going great!) . But it is weird because September I would start my 5th year, whereas I also might get an acceptance into AU which means I would have to drop out of that 5th year lool so I was just confused, thanks for clarifying!
      I am assuming you graduated right? If so, how is the work like back in Canada! That is another big question I have always wondered, did you find a stable job when/if you came back to Canada? This had to be amazing that you can finally pay off debt faster now!
      Thanks for all the help! This really helps me decide between things :D

    • @alannahanita-marie
      @alannahanita-marie  2 роки тому

      @@colberendsal5884 Yeah! If you continue straight into a 5th year then I guess you would just drop those classes if you accept your offer, which at the end of the day would be fine!
      I did graduate yes! Unfortunately did not get to have an in person graduation due to covid. But I recently got back to Canada and am in the process of getting my license. It takes around 4-6 weeks for the license registration for the provinces to go through, so I am still waiting on all of that. I am definitely going to make a video soon once I am settled with a job to explain that process after returning from Australia too! 😊

      I have never applied to these programs so I can't say with confidence whether or not they are difficult to get into.

      DAT: PAT 22, RC 19, BIO 20, CHEM 18
      GPA: 4th year 3.7, 3rd year 3.9, 2nd year 3.3 (not my best year!)
      The University of Melbourne uses a 3-2-1 GPA weighting so 4th year is weighted 3, 3rd year weighted 2, and 2nd year weighted 1.

      Hi Camille, a lot of people have been asking this question so I'm going to try and get a video up for it! For myself personally, I was extremely lucky to have help from my family in my first and second year along with OSAP from Ontario. And then for my third and fourth year, I took out a bank loan in Canada to cover the expenses. Most people have taken out a bank loan from the start which can cover the majority of the cost, and then whatever province you are from in Canada may have a student financial assistance program that can help as well!
