Hi Danny. A year and a half ago two orchids started my orchid hobby. They were either seedings or mini phals. They came from a wholesale club a type of grocery store that sells in mass quantities. Anyways this two phals came as a pair in pots the size of a shot glass and the cutest little blooms. They costed 5 euros for the pair (5 bucks). My inexperience said give them fresh air and... in front on a door they blasted their blooms. Hmmm, I decided perhaps more sun and brought them out for an afternoon sunning and roasted a hole in one of its leaf. But in all this abuse they immediately rebloomed again for me and I was hooked, hook line and sinker ... and telling you this story. Anyways I manage to keep these two guys alive and one has rebloomed for me 8 months ago and the second almost threw away is finally spiking with light green root tips. Oh, both easily doubled in size and the blooms was twice as large as original when bought thanks to this channel.

Wow you have such a wide range of different shapes and colours available! I was lucky to find a mini phal with a broken flower spike that I got for a bit cheaper, her flowers are pink fading into yellow at the edges with spotting around the lip. I really hope she does well!
Most phals available locally for me are white or pink so getting one with some yellow is exciting. And seeing this incredible rainbow of colours in your haul is a real treat!

Thank you for your fabulous video on Mini Phals! I had no idea what I purchased, but it was so delicate in beauty and fragrance, I thought I’d found my Little Nirvana. The tag said “Stanhope, likes to be in really moist conditions” with a 2oz cup noting Warm Water. I couldn’t imagine “really moist conditions”, as I use your strand of wool trick in each of my other two Phals for watering times. The multi-blooms of beautiful iridescent pink with violet lip, yellow stamen, and pearl eye, are already starting to drop after less than a week. I am furiously trying to dry out this little Beauty before all her blooms fall, and those yet to bloom change their mind. I have learned so much from your videos. Keep up the Fantastic Work! ❤️🌹💫

@@Morghena Mini orchids never go well for me... My first orchid was a mini, It was all going well until I reported it in back and it got root rot, Tragic I know. My second orchid has been alive for 2 years, My third orchid (Mini) was on discount for £0.25 such a bargain! How could I say no! Unfortunately she also died due to me overwatering, I then bought a fourth orchid and unfortunately, When winter hit everything went South, So 1/4 of my orchids stayed alive, My mum then gave me her dying phal and I've kept that one alive and thriving for over a year! Not sure if it's just my luck because two of them are thriving constantly! I guess some orchids are just so much more sensitive than others, A real shame. I'm going to buy my third and final mini phal and see how it goes, Now I have experience I'm hoping for the best, Third times the charm afterall.

Always fun to find something new :D I got super excited recently as I found a hybrid that looked like a mini P. schilleriana (mottled leaves, pale pink blooms, red leaf underside) in a grocery shop for under 10 euros. I looked it up and it's a primary equestris x schilleriana hybrid! Sadly no fragrance but it was so darn cute I couldn't resist :) hope you enjoy your new Phals! x

The miniature size is likely because of a strong presence of the Equestris within the parentage of these orchids, and the red coloration on the leaves together with the pink flowers is likely from Schilleriana. It's nice that you also talked about it!
I really liked the one with the orange lip! I'm thinking of getting a mini Phal for myself, because I don't have one. I really like the ones with the yellow background and the red-pink splash. I've actually seen much smaller than these in my local garden center, but they're likely treated with something.

Danny, I am also here for advice. Here's the story: Brassavola cucullata, growing two new healthy leaves but the plant's roots are almost non existent. If I had to count the silvery-green ones it would be just 3 or 4, no longer than 1-2cm.
My question is: Do you think putting the plant in sphagnum moss would help? I know Brassavola likes to dry between waterings but I feel like it doesn't receive enough of water now.

Hi Danny - Do you always re-pot your new phals? I received one a few months ago and it was potted in sphagnum moss, it seems to be quite happy in that medium so I haven’t repotted it (yet). My concern is that the moss is way high up the plant (?), like you can’t even see where the flower spike originates from the actual plant. I guess I could just remove the moss from the top or should I just re-pot the whole thing? Thanks! Love your videos :)

Hi. I've been watching several of your videos trying to see if I can save a special plant that I had someone else caring for while I was away.. Someone who is no longer with us gave me this plant... and I'd really like to do anything possible to give it the slightest glimmer of hope.
I'm pretty sure it's a mini Phalaenopsis and had nice pink flowers. It came in a very tiny cup with moss in it. The first year it did very well until winter came and then it lost all but 2 or 3 leaves and then regrew a leaf or two and flowered really nicely for many months. Now it is turning to winter again and it started losing some leaves before I left, but when I returned after a month (had my mother "take care of it" it a tiny bit while I was away) all the larger leaves have browned and fallen away.. the roots are terrible.. almost all rotten. I think my mother over watered it and gave it possibly too much direct sun light and had it sitting only a few centimeters from a window (probably got too cold near the window when we dropped below freezing outside a couple nights this month)...
When I came home it only had 3 tiny leaves and 2 of them are yellowing and starting to curl... There's only 1 root that seems to be the "healthy" color shown in your videos (white turning green when watered). It was the only root that was outside of the moss. The moss seems to have compacted and was super wet and might have had bits of white mold on top.
I removed it from its tiny cup which had holes in it when I got home and haven't watered cause the roots were rotten and the moss was wet.. It's been a week and the moss was still wet, so I just removed pretty much all the moss and have the roots mostly bare and ran a fan over it for 5 or 6 minutes to dry out the mushy stuff and I've put a few drops of water on the 1 possibly healthy root.
The 3 remaining leaves are all unhealthy and only 1-3 cm big... I showed it to someone at a greenhouse and they pretty quickly said it was a lost cause, but I want to try my best to save it... even if it will still most likely die. Can you give me some suggestions of what to do? I'm going to try and keep it in indirect sunlight for our now short winter days, water the root that is white to keep it green. (the other roots are dead/mushy) How often should I water its only root? Should the root stay greenish always if it has enough water, or only be green when it is being watered? Should I keep it outside the moss since the moss was so damp and compacted?
Could I send you a picture somehow? It's really bad...... and I'd REALLY like some advice. This plant meant a lot to me as I really miss this person... and it WAS doing okay prior to me leaving on a trip =/
    Any help is much appreciated!
PS: I think it is/was the second flower you showed in this video.

This is kind of unrelated. I really want a black orchid. I’ve seen some seedlings online but I’m not too sure if I can trust the sellers and there’s a lot of “seeds” for them online too. I tried googling for plant nurseries that might have them but there doesn’t seem to be any in my area at least. I’m just not too sure how a plant would do in an envelope especially with how rough some couriers can be. But also without proper oxygen and water.

  • @familhagaudir8561
    @familhagaudir8561 5 років тому

Mini-Phalaenopsis look more and more appealing now that my standart Phals grow 2 feet across with 6, 12... 16 leaves after a few years in bark+sphaghum moss.
That dosen't leave much room. They bloom twice or 3 times a year though.
I have one true mini-Phal that stayed tiny after years, has 10 leaves and is basically always in bloom or spike. You got to like tiny flowers though.
For huge flowers, you are stuck with the usual "monster" white, white with pink lip, or pink. Oh there is one huge harlequin with purple dots on the market now.
Medium flowers and short-spiked hybrids provide most of the color and pattern variety.

@@yomairal2477 In the true mini category, I can give you a couple names ( although garden centers rarely tag their Phalaenopsis ).
Phalaenopsis Chia E. Berry. It blooms twice+ per year. Small purple dots with great pattern and dark purple lip on a white background. Leaves are dark green. It looks amasing. The same flowers seem to last forever, sometimes over 4 months.
Phalaenopsis Sogo Gotris ( several good clones avaliable ). Intense yellow with pink and sunset blending. Its yellow color stays pretty, contrary to most yellow phal hybrids that fade. Blooms twice a year. Leaves are "apple green". One or two varieties of this cross are pretty-much always there when garden centers recieve mini-phals.
I pot mine in medium bark with a layer of sphagnum moss on top, and water as soon as the moss is dry on touch.
      Happy growing.
