  • Today we set up a new grow space for Mini Phalaenopsis orchids and other low light, small plants!
    ▼▼▼More info below!▼▼▼
Mini Phalaenopsis orchids take the same care as their bigger counterparts, with the adequate changes regarding pot size and media. Here is my Phalaenopsis care tutorial • How to care for Phalae...
All we need for these tiny orchids is a secure place in our home, such a shelf, desk or table and a light source! Since natural light is scarce, we will use artificial light.
Grow lights are the norm for growing great plants, but they can be harsh on the eyes. I find that normal daylight bulbs do great for these orchids! I prefer 4000k LED bulbs with as high output as possible (specified by the lumen quantity).
For more information on a more professional approach, learn about PAR en.wikipedia.o...
In the end we get a cute little place with enough light for our orchid to flourish and not be bothersome for our family or colleagues!

One of the things I like about you and your channel is that you're not fussy about the hybrid orchids. For some people complex hybrids are a no-no, because of... Yes, because of what? Of course they get poorer care and are common but still can make people happy :) Like me (compulsive orchid buyer/grower...)

Idk about them but for me personally I wouldn't want too many complex hybrids that are slightly different, I just figured out I adore the fragrance more than the colors so that's also probably why since most of them hybrids aren't fragrant.

I tend to shy away from grow light for phals as well because of their low light needs. Though I actually have mine in the kitchen near a window that allows for more humidity, good levels of natural light, and good air flow.

Hi Danny. With sensitive furniture you can place clear plastic sheets over it. Can purchase 5 or 6 mil in thickness from local hardware stores. As I'm running out of windows and adding to collection 😬 soon will need to add lights too.

Hi there Danni. Just watched your video on mini Phalaenopsis orchids. We have the big ones at my work, they come from overseas as small plants, we then have to unwrap them and them a lady has to put them up and put them in one of glass houses until they grow up and and produce flower spikes, and then we sell them to the public and all the supermarkets and plants nurseries. But when I go and find myself one of the mini, they are gone. Keep up the good work you are doing, love your videos.

For a reason I can’t explain, I prefer humongous orchids 😂. I love their long spikes and giant blooms.

I use those little plastic trays under my pots (I'm still in s/h), the extra water evaporates from the trays and adds a tiny bit of humidity 👍

My *mini-Phal "Coffey"* is in its third blooming season right now. Beside its vibrant magenta-purple flowers, it also has yellow borders on each leaf. Delightful year round!
Another variegated mini is "Sogo Vivien" with paler, striped flowers.

Great video! I love mini phals too. Unfortunately, I haven't had any luck reblooming them after their flowers die 😥 Maybe I will try some of your tips here.

Hi Danny! Great video as always, and it really got me thinking about my space! Unfortunately, my growing space isn't all that bright, and I was wondering what your thoughts were on using mirrors to reflect what little light I get from outside. I have a west-facing window, but light always gets blocked by the building on my right which comes out a little bit further, and the outlets in my apartment are a little bit inconvenient to get to. That said, there is always this one spot that gets very bright for about 1-2 hours that I can't put my plants in, but could fit a mirror on the wall and maybe bounce some of that light back, but I'm just afraid of burning the leaves of my orchids.

thanks, great video, great voice, lovely orchids!
how many hours of light? is darkness hours required? what if when sunsets i use nearby lamp or tv in same room, will this disturb blooming or anything?

Hi Danny, This is a very useful video! You address a lot of issues so many of us face living in apartments with less than ideal lighting. I believe I saw a phal with light green leaves in your lamp-lit grow space -- is that a species/hybrid? My understanding is that those kinds of phals require higher light. Could one grow, say, a phal amboinensis or fasciata under those lights?

Does anyone have an idea on how rare a variegated leaf mini phaleanopsis is with three spikes full of flowers. The tree spikes was neat, but I’m mostly wondering about the variegated leaves, because I also came by a variegated leaf denrobrium I thought was rare because I haven’t seen one before. Thanks , and good luck orchiders!!!!!!!
