He loved guitar playing enough to become one of the best guitar players of all time, but was more considerate about his father and how hard he works for the money.
What an unbelievably mature teenager. No wonder how he turned out to be such a great guy.

OH Boy...that one got me. My dad and I are also very close, and he bought my first two guitars and amps. Lord knows my folks were so broke at that time - they did much better later - but getting me music equipment was a priority for my dad. It wasn't great stuff - nothing like a LP Deluxe - but it sufficed, and got me on the path to becoming a player. That was over 40 years ago, and I'm still at it. Thanks Dad!

Biggest take away from this story is? WE NEED MUSIC IN SCHOOL ! I moved to a little oil town in Texas, third grade. Music teachers in grade school usually just make you sing from a song book. Mrs Jackson 1964 music teacher in Olney, Tx had a different approach. We learned MUSIC. Reading notes and everything that goes with it. I still remember my one and a half years of lessons. Even if you don't have a music career, music can be a very rewarding part of a life.

My father got me a '73 Gibson Les Paul Standard when I was 13. This was shortly after my 'disturbed' next door neighbor broke into our house and smashed my prized triple pickup '67 Rickenbacker I had purchased from a kid at school. The Les Paul is still my #1when I perform.
New Les Paul in 1973--$400. Time with my father driving 1+ hours to 'Ye Old Music Shoppe' in Marissa, Illinois, picking out my new guitar and then him taking me to lunch post-purchase (hamburger, onion rings and a Coke) ... priceless.

Key is you gotta respect your kid’s passions. I’m a guitarist and love this story. My son tried guitar and bass and it didn’t catch. His passion turned out to be a mechanic. I saw the same passion in him for working on his trucks that I had for guitar. He could spend hours under his trucks in the garage same as I’d spent hours in my bedroom with my guitars. Bought him the best set of tools money could buy and two years of automotive trade school. 🤘❤️

The best part was just a Father asking his son to hang out as soon as the Father came home from work. Steve picked Guitar Center and his Father could've said " Let's do something we both like to do!" but he said , ok son let's go to G.C.. The purchase of the amp and guitar was just a bonus. Today, the Les Paul and amp may be worth tens of thousands of dollars, but the Father and son hang will forever be Priceless.

Hi Teaching... that’s so true...it’s so sad that so many kids these days are from a fatherless home. Not knocking the mothers at all... they do their best I’m sure but two parent homes ( when the parents are loving and supportive) are obviously the best. Thanks for watching... Joe (Just in case it comes up.... I know there are plenty of stories where one parent did a great job and all was great.)

Hell of a father you had there, Steve. Wished I had parents that would have fed my passion and nurtured my gift at that age. Ended up having to feed myself years later after I was old enough to get a job. Taking a theory class in high school was certainly beneficial. And yes, we need to get more/keep music programs in school.
Steve you worked hard at your craft and deserve every bit of success you've reaped over the years. Cheers brother.

Lukather playing guitar is a great guitar player.
Lukather playing a classic Gibson Les Paul is a guitar playing Great!
Every Guitar Great has an Iconic playing moment. Lukather's is his lead solo on "Hold The Line". And that was with a Les Paul.
It is such a great shame his collaboration with Ibanez didn't work out. His original vision for what eventually became the Ibanez RS1010SL must have been some special guitar. Pity it never panned out. And a pity he never went back to Gibson. And we should all love our Dads.

Almost made me cry there. I was a terrible student and obsessed with guitars for as long as I could remember. They were mysterious and unattainable. My dad said he'd buy me one if I got good grades. It drove him nuts that as smart as I was, I hated school work beyond the things that interested me. Long story short I never got good grades and eventually bought a knock off pawn shop telecaster with money from my first job at 14. After teaching myself how to play and starting a band where we eventually started getting gigs regularly I asked for a Fender Telecaster MIM for Christmas. My parents never dropped more than $80-100 bucks on each of their kids during Christmas, so I knew it was a long shot. But with help from the aunts and grandparents I got an artic white MIM Tele...they did it "Christmas Story" style by hiding it in the garage and making me get something from there, after everyone opened their gifts.
I'm 35 years old and that's still my only electric guitar, albeit with new electronics and pickups. I have since purchased nice amps, pedals, synths, built a small recording studio, but I still only use that electric guitar. It plays so well. So well in fact that other people have played it and commented on good it sounds and plays for a 16 year old Fender MIM. People who own much more expensive American made Fenders have complimented me on how great it is to play. I eventually want to get a ES 335 style guitar but I'm hesitant because it feels like I'm cheating on my guitar...Maybe I won't use it anymore after a new one. Anyway, I know what its like when someone goes out of their way to get you a guitar.
