I keep telling everyone, this is one of the greatest rock songs ever! Every time it comes on, no matter who I’m with, the volume is turned up and we drift away!
It's got me tearing up, a little. Great song, singer, and memory. Uncle Cracker did pretty well with it, but absolutely nobody has, or will ever, sing it as well as Dobie Gray.
Drift Away, Ain’t no Sunshine when She’s Gone, Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, all have that same feel for me when I hear them. Thanks for keeping the music alive 👍
As a black/indigenous child growing up in Oklahoma, this song reminded me of walking in the woods, alone with my thoughts, and contemplating life with nature as a background. It still resonates with me now, some fifty years later. I miss the aspirations of all peoples of the 1970s and my little innocent slice of life back then.
As a Caucasian/non-indigenous child from Ohio, I’m right there with you! Memories of sitting in the woods, on the banks of the Olentangy River, fishing for bluegills, catfish, smallmouth-anything that would bite-building a little campfire when it got dark, hanging out with my best friends and usually carrying a little transistor radio. I was about 9 years old when Drift Away hit the airwaves and hearing it now puts my mind right back to those great little spots and activities that made-up some of the best years of my life. 👍🏼❤️🫡
There's just something about Drift Away! I used to work at a pharmacy. For a while it was on the music mix on our system at work. Without fail, customers and sales clerks alike would sing along when it would play. It would always lift our spirits. It was wonderful to see someone's face light up and there mood change just because of a song. The healing power of music is amazing!
A friend of mine owned a bar for a few years. Every Thursday was karaoke/trivia night. At the end of the night each week, my friend (and usually everyone in the bar) sang drift away. So this song will forever take me back to those fun Thursday nights in my thirties
Both beautiful songs!! I was just a kid back then, but I loved music from when I was 4. My dad bought me one of those suitcase looking record players because he was afraid I’d fall off the chair I dragged over to play records on his record player/hi fi system. Ahh, those were the days of great music!! ✌🏼💖
I always enjoy when a “new” song comes out and becomes a hit, only to discover that’s it’s been around for more than a few years. It’s especially satisfying to hear the original artist get credit or even sing it again. Thanks, Dobie.
This brings me back. Drift Away was released when I was 14. Bought it on 45 and played it over and over. Nobody will ever top Dobie’s version. Still crank it up if I hear it on an oldies station.
I LOVE that song. When I was in Germany, I saw an Album in the trash. I had never heard of Dobie Gray, but being a Singer/Songwriter I couldn't stand the thought of ANYBODY'S work being trashed like that. I took it home and I'll bet I played "Drift Away" 15 times in a row. I sat down and learned it, and covered it mixed in with my own songs. I felt a responsibility to get it heard! It is a superbly written song, and Dobie Gray did it justice!
As a kid growing up in the early 70s, I have a soft spot for this song in my heart. To this day, it remains one of my all time favorite singles. For some strange reason, everytime I think of this song, I think about Ain't No Sunshine and I Can See Clearly Now. I don't understand why, but to me these three songs should be played together. Professor, nice attire, btw.

@Mic Norton remember it quite well, both the Paperlace version and the Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods version. And, of course who could resist Billy Preston? Will it go round in circles and Nothing From Nothing, were everywhere in the early 70s.
I was going through a life changing event in the early summer of '73 and this song was going strong on radio. It still stirs strong feelings when I hear it. Can't believe it's been 50 years!?
It was this song that started me into playing music. The bass really was the attraction of the low frequencies that you could feel. In less than a year I had a bass and could play Drift Away. I am also 62 now and that song is one that will resonate with me forever.
I had just graduated from High School that year 1973 and I was living in a Boys home before I had to go out in the world on my own...the summer of 1973 was and is still my favorite summer in my life....and Drift Away was one of my favorite all time songs from that summer...thank you Dobie Gray
Love Dobie Gray's version of Drift Away. My daughter would sing along with me whenever I would play it. She loved it so much that one time while driving my kids to the store, something happened and she began to cry. She only about 4 or 5, and she was having a good cry, but about a minute into Drift Away came on the radio and instantly, her crying turned into joy. That's how I feel about this song. Oh man...I love this song. We visited a record store in Tampa last month and this was a 'must find'. I was happy to find the album and scored a pristine 45. Gotta get off my duff and hook up our new turntable. This is truly a tears of joy song. Thank you so much for covering this.
It such a fabulous song. I was 18 and just like you said we would turn the sound up and whoever was in the car or truck we would all chime in. It always just picked you up and made you smile. ❤❤❤
One the best memories I have of this song is that every time it was played on the radio, we all would just start singing & moving to it. To this day it lives in my playlist
My dad was the same way. Him and my mom had divorced when I was a baby and he would see us on the weekends. The first thing he would do is turn on the radio and start listening to old songs. I would get mad because I wanted to play with my friends and he would say "No just sit here and listen to this with me". This has become one of my favorite memories of him. Just chilling all day listening to music.
This song is one of my Desert Island Discs. I always go to the rock and roll when I’m not feeling right and need to “drift away.” This song says it all. RIP Dobie and Mentor.
There have been several covers of Drift Away, but none compare to Dobie Gray's version, and it will always be his song imo. Dobie sings it like he means it. Much like Whitney Houston had a big hit with I Will Always Love You, but as much as I love Whitney's voice, that will always be Dolly Parton's song, and no other version compares to hers. And she really did mean it. The '70s had a lot of great sing-alongs. Dancing in the Moonlight (King Harvest) comes to mind. Also We Will Rock You (Queen), Don't Stop Believin' (Journey), I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor), American Pie (Don McLean), Come Sail Away (Styx), a bunch of Fleetwood Mac songs, a bunch of ELO songs, it goes on and on. But Drift Away is definitely *at least* top 5.
Shout out to the late Reggie Young for that unforgettable guitar riff that opens Dobie's song and one he came up with on his own as a session musician.
You are the only comment to mention Reggie Young. Absolutely. Reggie made the song with that intro... just like Elvis "Suspicious Minds", Elvis "In the Ghetto", Dusty "Son of a Preacher Man,"... "Cry Like a Baby," Boxtops, and "I Can Help" by Billy... Billy... Billy Swan!!! Oh wait... The guitar solo on Anymore" by Travis Tritt. Reggie is a legend!!!
I was going through a pretty depressing time in 73 and when this song came on the radio, I also cranked it up and sang along as loud as I could. It really did touch my soul.
I’ve always loved Drift Away. When it came on the radio not long ago again, I was confused. I told my kid that it was a remake. He loves it too! I jumped online and found Gray’s version which is of course the one I loved in the 70’s. Connecting generations!
I LOVED this song as a a very young child when it first came out. I won't go into why other than to say my childhood was not very good, and it helped me to learn how to 'drift away' in the music on the radio.
Thank you. I love Dobie's version of this song. It's one of my favorites. I remember once when I was listening to the radio, a DJ said "Dobie's inspired version". It was. And I thank you for telling us about the musicians who contributed to this beautiful version.
Ooh my gosh this song means so much to me, I even have it as my ring tone. My father played this song so much when I was young. Then when he died my sister and I were sitting in the car in his funeral entrouge when this song came on the radio. We all sang along and remembered our dad. Summer days in the park and winter nights listening to this whilst we drifted off to sleep. It was so unexpected because we were in Kenya and the radio kept going off and on but during that song it played all the way. My sister and I were convinced it was a message from him. 2015 my sister died and I was so shocked to see my sister chose that song at her funeral. I cried so much because I knew that was her message to me and my brother. Thank you for explaining the origins because so many people never remember it. Thank you.
Besides a great song and Dobie Gray version, this is such a wonderful story-a reminder that we can give up on a dream, but sometimes perseverance and luck can still be yours.
I really love this song. It, like many others from that era, really does make me drift away in blissful memories. Thanks for your take on it, Professor.
I loved that song and singer ever since the first time I heard it. And , still do to this day. It sends chills thru me when I hear it. No way could it have ever found a better voice to bring it to life. Match made in heaven , song and voice ! Wow , still one of the greatest songs , in my mind. Loved hearing it right now ! And I will love it tomorrow and always. It just touched my soul , still does.
What up Prof! I absolutely love the in-depth research you do on artists, who people think they just came out of nowhere, recorded a hit and then wandered back out of the spotlight. When in reality most of these artists have paid their dues many a year, grinding and working hard on the road. It seems most of them as well have had other songs released other than the one hit they're known for. Then afterwards go back to recording and touring even if they don't have another hit. I just want to give a shout-out to all of the "blue collar" musicians working their ass off out there!
When I first got Pandora I loved reading the biographies of musicians, it shed light onto their struggles to share their gift. In the Country genre it is amazing how many came from broken homes, especially in the 20s-50s when divorce was so much less accepted.
I like history, and I like music. What could be better than bringing the two together. These segments are fascinating. The close degrees of separation between all these celebrated people paints an interesting picture of the world of performing arts.
There are many times I will bring this song up on my drive into work. It makes the miles melt away and leaves me feeling like I am just floating. The music and the vocals transport me to another world.
It is so interesting how many tunes bounce around from artist to artist before becoming a hit. I never realized Rose Garden or Drift Away were covers. Dobie Gray absolutely was the right person for this song, I'm sure he made Mr. Williams proud. I also didn't know Dobie was named after Maynard Krebbs best friend. Thanks Prof.
Omg, this song always gives me goosebumps and I drift away into it. I fell in love with it as a kid sitting in the back seat and it captures me every time I hear or think about it.
I was born in 1973, but I remember when I first heard this song as a kid in the car playing on the radio and I instantly fell in love with it. I also belt this song out when I hear it and it takes me back to the days when life was good and simple without a care in the world.❤❤❤❤❤❤
I was 11 years old in 1973. I remember being at my grandmas house, in the Summer, in her living room, all by myself playing. The stereo was always on and the music was set to a station that that played everything from rock to country and pop. Three songs I remember distinctly were The Doors, Light My Fire, Donna Fargo's "The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA, and Drift Away. The station played Drift way at the top of the hour, every hour, everyday, for that Summer, and I never got tired of it. "You know a melody can move me" is no lie.
I was 10 years old in 1990, and my sisters and I were at our cousins place waiting for our father. We decided to play a game of Pictionary, my sister was up first and right as she started I belted out the line "I wanna get lost in your rock and roll" and she stops me because her clue answer was rock. Her very next turn I burst into "Turn that radio up for that sweet sound" and her word was radio. She was so mad because she didn't get to draw anything. That's the day I was banned from singing while playing board games with my family 😂😂
I remember the chills Dobie created when he belted this song at an outdoor concert in Nashville. He opened with a masterful rendition of “Who is That Mannnnnnnn” and had us in his hands for his entire set. Of course, Drift Away was the climax. 20 minute sets have come and gone in my mind and heart - but this one still chills me!
Very informative and touching tribute. I remember being in third grade on the playground at school and singing this song with friends. It takes me back instantly to a simpler time. A time that I wish I could revisit every now and then. Thank you, Professor of Rock. ❤
There's nothing like a song that just always makes you feel good. Whether it makes a gloomy day brighter or a good day even better, Drift Away will always be one of those rare feel good songs
The decision to record with the Nashville session players was a master stroke. They really added so much to this tune, especially Reggie Young's signature intro lick, and this very song features prominently in Gil Baker's documentary "Session Men" which was filmed a few years ago. Thanks, Adam!
Like you, this was one of my Dad’s favorites. Windows down, he’d crank the radio and step on the gas. He’d sing along loudly, feeling so free for that 3 minutes and 57 seconds! It was fun to watch him and I understood the power of this song more as I got older. Miss you Dad! Thank you Mentor & Grey for the memories.
As a child of the 60-70’s I remember this song very well. Still have the original 45 I bought for probably 79¢ at the local 5 $ 10 store. I can’t be the only one who always heard “Give me The Beach Boys instead of The Beat Boys”.
Memories! You had to listen to this song with windows rolled down and volume turned up and singing as loud as you can. Summertime weather was the best times with rock n roll and your radio!
One of my all time favorites!! I had no idea who Dobie Gray was or even that he was African American until like 1996. Such an amazing voice and incredible song. So glad his beautiful voice finally brought this tremendous song into the prominence it deserves. And I loved hearing about it from you. Awesome story about an incredible couple of men!
@@ProfessorofRock I did, or rather the cassette. I bought it digitally, so now it's literally with me wherever I go. I remember when Debbie Harry was on the Muppet Show and sang a duet of "Rainbow Connection" with Kermit. I was so bummed that they skipped an entire verse of the song.
I grew up with the original as a child of the 90's and then fell in love with Uncle Kracker's version as a teen. Both hold a special place in my heart and always will. ❤🎶
By the way the designer for the Cover of the album for Pollution is none other than Dean Torrance of Jan and Dean fame and he won a Grammy for that album cover!
I sang along to Drift Away a lot in the 70's, once over the CB radio. A young girl that was the next door neighbor to a friend of mine came on after and said: "You can't sing." How deflating! 😊
I once sang a bit of "Only The Lonely" to remind someone that he knew the song. He said, "Don't quit yer day job." Notice I didn't refer to him as a friend?
Dobie Gray. 'Drift Away' and 'The In Crowd' were his two minor hits in the UK, in 1973 and 1965 respectively. Then in 1974 Bryan Ferry (of Roxy Music fame) had a top 20 hit with 'The In Crowd'. Dobie Gray was very much underrated, sadly no longer with us.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Love Drift Away! ❤ Classic song from the 70s. Glad it hit the charts. Funny how sometimes a great song languishes. Stories like thus are why we come here every day. The man. The myth. The Professor of Rock. (Great shirt) 👕
So the other day, Drift Away came across a Tic Toc that my youngest son was playing. My oldest son stated that he liked this song. 😊 A couple of years ago, I caught Kenny Chesney doing a cover of this. Definitely a classic favorite of mine from the 70s!
Oh my god, I love this song! It so relaxing to listen to as you lie back and chill during a summer evening, or a great song to hear as you're driving on a road trip. Thanks Professor! I needed to hear this!
@ProfessorOfRock you summed this song up great. It exemplifies a carefree attitude and joy as well as showing lots of heart. It exemplifies why people wrote songs and get into music. Another thing is I can tell you come from the same generation when you talked about riding with your dad singing it at the top of your lungs. It does take me back. Thank you and keep Rockin my friend
Definitely one of my most favorite songs. When I hear it, I really do “drift away” to a different place, another time or an alternate reality for 3:57. I loved both Dobie Grey’s solo version and the duet with Kracker equally. Simply a masterpiece.
Drift Away is powerful because it is a sincere love letter to music. Thanks for the joy you’ve given me-I believe in you-free my soul-I want to get lost, and drift away. The sentiment is transforming
That song puts me back in time to a summer day on the highway in my father's car. The family was on vacation and we didn't have air conditioners in most cars so we drove with all the windows down. The am radio was cranked to hear it above the sound of the wind. Still love this song.😊
Poll: What is your pick for the greatest singalong hit of the rock era? One you just HAVE to sing to the top of your lungs when it comes on?
I Can See Clearly Now by Johnny Nash
Take Me Home Country Roads- John Denver
Little Willy by The Sweet.
Long Train Running - Doobies
Crystal Blue Persuasion -Tommy James
Rock this Town - Stray Cats
Blue Moon - The Marcels
Black Water by the Doobie Brothers
"American Woman" by The Guess Who

Dobie Gray was the right singer for this song. His voice is unmistakable

In the eighties I thought music would just continue to get better and better.
Dancing Queen will always be one of my favorite songs to sing to. Also, Yesterday Once More by The Carpenters.
A truly fantastic riff that perfectly compliments the feel of the song and rings in the mind long afterwards.
Always loved this song. It’s one of my cover tunes when I’m performing pubs/restaurants. Everyone loves it!
Like my Mom use to say: "People and places come and go but good music always stays"
True that !
R.I.P. Mom
and to Dobie Gray and Mentor Williams. 👍
Moms Rule! They can make moments timeless without even trying. Here's to all Moms Past & Present!💝💓💌
Just a great song.... my kids like the Uncle Kracker version but this song was meant for Dobie.
In all fairness, Uncle Krackers version is DAMN GOOD as well!
Dobie Gray was on the Uncle Kracker's version as well.
Agreed. Dobie slays it!
I was surprised how much I liked it!
That was a nice touch!
Thanks for watching Marcus. What would you like to see next?
Hoping for Felix Cavaliere. IMO, the most unique and recognizable voice of the 60's.
Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers was also a cover.
He got it from Dobie Gillis, I did know that.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Maynard was Dobie Gillis' best friend in the series
One of my all time favorite songs. Brings back such amazing memories ❤❤
This came out the year after I started singing in bands. His voice won me over and I sang this song whenever I could. Just a great tune.
The hardest part of watching this channel is the snippets of the awesome songs that are played. You get into them and they are stopped.
Yeah...his videos are amateurishly done, long winded, poorly edited, and simply annoying.
I've been furiously adding to my playlist thanks to this channel. Mostly incredulous that I didn't have them there already.
"Drift Away" is definitely one of the many great 70's sing along songs. One of my favorites.
So proud he left the royalties to St Jude and blind school, RIP DOBY ❤
Drift Away is THE perfect sing along song! One of my favorites.
As a child of the 60-70’s I remember this song very well. Still have the original 45 I bought for probably 79¢ at the local 5 $ 10 store. I can’t be the only one who always heard “Give me The Beach Boys instead of The Beat Boys”.
You're not. Me too.
Memories! You had to listen to this song with windows rolled down and volume turned up and singing as loud as you can. Summertime weather was the best times with rock n roll and your radio!
DEFINITELY a masterpiece of popular song! 🎵
I remember when it was on the radio all the time, probably AM🤔
@@autojohn-pu1vf FM radio in my hometown. 📻
For sure!
Yup.
100% agree! It's amazing - a true masterpiece!
Listening to Boston...LOUD! Reminds me of my Dad! He said "The only way to listen to Boston is all the way up"! I miss him too!
Great song! One I can’t help singing and dancing to when I hear it. Thanks for this episode, Adam!❤
Thanks Tina!
This is my all time favorite song, and Dobie Grays' version is my favorite.
I played that song over and over again!! I still can’t get enough of that song! Dobie Gray was perfect for my very favorite song!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Kermit does have a strong case for “best vocalist of the rock era” 🤘🤠 2:08
Elvis got nuttin' on Mr. Frog. 🐸
Ha ha! I love that song! Did you have the record?
@@ProfessorofRock I did, or rather the cassette. I bought it digitally, so now it's literally with me wherever I go.
I remember when Debbie Harry was on the Muppet Show and sang a duet of "Rainbow Connection" with Kermit. I was so bummed that they skipped an entire verse of the song.
The singer from Canned Heat totally sounded like Kermit!
Rainbow Connection was a part of my childhood.
I remember this on AM radio, it was comfort food for the musical soul. Everyone sang it loud. Love this one by Dobie. Thanks Adam!
I grew up with the original as a child of the 90's and then fell in love with Uncle Kracker's version as a teen. Both hold a special place in my heart and always will. ❤🎶
I had Drift Away sung by Dobie Gray on 45. One of the greats of the 70’s Reminds me of so many good times & old friends.
By the way the designer for the Cover of the album for Pollution is none other than Dean Torrance of Jan and Dean fame and he won a Grammy for that album cover!
This was my brother's favorite song.. We played it at his "celebration of life".. he would have been 79 years old a couple of days ago.. RIP JKB
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Love Drift Away! ❤
Classic song from the 70s. Glad it hit the charts. Funny how sometimes a great song languishes.
Stories like thus are why we come here every day.
The man.
The myth.
The Professor of Rock.
(Great shirt) 👕
Thanks Roger! Have a great Tuesday!
He’s the MAN. Love it 👏🏾
I first heard this 💎 50yrs ago a classic song I still enjoy today as much I did then Auckland New Zealand 2023
So the other day, Drift Away came across a Tic Toc that my youngest son was playing. My oldest son stated that he liked this song. 😊
A couple of years ago, I caught Kenny Chesney doing a cover of this. Definitely a classic favorite of mine from the 70s!
Have you heard the Uncle Kracker version that a lot of us younger generations grew up with?
Hearing you describe Drift Away gave this 65 year old singer "Cold Chills"
Oh my god, I love this song! It so relaxing to listen to as you lie back and chill during a summer evening, or a great song to hear as you're driving on a road trip. Thanks Professor! I needed to hear this!
Ringo Starr included a version of "Drift Away" in his 1998 album Vertical Man, where he shared the lead vocals with Tom Petty and Alanis Morissette.
