OK....to ANYBODY that conducts an interview..... when you have a person that will tell stories, DO EXACTLY WHAT THIS MAN DOES....LET HIM TALK!!!!!!! This is amazing.... what a great story teller and a GREAT interviewer. Ask the perfect question, then get out of the way....why can't everybody else get this?? What a pleasure to watch.

You're right. Some interviewers try to micro-manage the interview towards a sort of framework they decided on before the interview and even go so far as to cut off the one they're interviewing just to get them to where they want. They don't seem to get that people come to hear the *interviewee* talk, not to find out what sort of script the interviewer cooked up, no matter how well thought out it is.
I couldn't agree more! Well said mate. By the way, Luke's book is a must-read. So many great memories and fun stories about the golden age of the LA session era, told by one of the main characters of that scene. An extremely talented musician and a down to earth, self-effacing and humble guy. Total respect. Thanks to MHoF for the great interview(s)!

As a kid there is a moment when you think Steve Lukather... ‘meh’ ... he played on ‘I Love LA’. Then an older brother or a friend (who invariably knows a lot more than you) introduces you to STEVE LUKATHER and you are completely floored. He’s absolutely one of the baddest men on the planet when he’s playing - but from everything that I’ve seen and heard he’s one of the nicest guys when he’s not.
The story about his Les Paul puts a lump in my throat. Reminds me of the kind of thing my dad would do. Hats off to moms and dads who go out of their way to support their kids!

in 1978 Toronto area $900 Canadian...Thank you Dad...brought a tear to my eye.
My sister lives 2-3 doors down from Steve Lukather in Studio City...when I visit her I keep an eye out for a Lukather sighting so I can be ‘that guy’ for a minute...he seems like an appreciative man.

It just now occurs to me what a great job Luke does avoiding 'obscenities' during this interview. Great show of respect for Joe and viewers.
I recently thought of the song "99". The memory of this song from my early childhood popped into my head. I never knew it was a Toto song. I watched the video and instantly fell into a deep crush with Steve Lukather. I just watched this interview. After hearing the very touching story about his dad, and seeing how it still moves him to this day, I can say without hesitation that my admiration and respect for this very sweet and talented man is growing. Thank you for blessing the world with your talent and your wonderful memories!

And such a nice guy. Besides the incredible musician. Had the honour and pleasure of meeting him in Frankfurt in 2009, when a couple of friends of mine I was there with were playing the slot before him every day. Very humble and quite charismatic. Glad to see him seemingly well.
Read his book. It's great!
@@LetzBeaFranque I ordered it an hour ago after seeing other parts of this interview. Such an admirable, inspiring, humble and lovable human being, not to mention that he's all over my music collection. I built my first studio in '77, the same year he really started hitting the big time.

Steve is never mentioned with Eddie and the others but he most certainly should always be in the conversation. The best tone out there.
thanks guys for mentioning support for music in schools, so many don't have music, or no budget to maintain instruments, just donated a drum kit and numerous orchestra instrument repairs to my son's middle school, they don't even have a budget for any strings, drums heads, nothing.
14:20 Just gotta say. That solo he did for Boz Scaggs on "A Clue" is so exquisitely tasteful that it's hard to believe someone could just come up with it on the fly like Luke did. But Luke's a actual genius (which he probably doesn't think he is), so it's not _as hard_ to believe he could do it.

Luke is just the coolest, nicest guy. I hadn't heard about the dyslexia until now. It does complicate things. I hope he gets to do whatever he feels like without further legal battles from certain individuals~ Rock on Luke we love you! And thank you, Joe for another great interview!

What a great interview!! I have respected this guy and his talents ever since I first heard Hold the Line back in 78. Even today when I'm listening to all the awesome music that came out back in the day, I can tell usually within a few bars, or the first few licks of a solo that it's Steve playing. This Cat has played on so many of my favorite songs, and so many of my favorite albums, that it's almost unbelievable, but it's all true. I also very much respect his down to earth attitude and his humbleness that he always displays in public. What a wonderful tender soul that God blessed with the talents of 10 men. God Bless you Steve Lukather!

Yes sir. I know what it means when he said he gets chills when holding a historic guitar. I think many of us who truly appreciate the history of what happened in music throughout the 50's 60's and 70's. And sure from before those era's and after....and still today. But what we witnessed in those 3 decades...I don't believe we will ever see that kind of magic again. Which makes these interviews so special. Like loosing EVH yesterday. Were running out of time and I am so grateful for this stuff. Thank you Joe 👍🏻😎

Well, like others here - and Lukather himself - my eyes teared up when his father told him to pack the gear into the car. Not every parent could afford to do that - those were costly bits of gear - but more importantly he did do it. He was paying attention to his son. And thankfully so.
Also, as per others who point it out, Joe, do always do such a great job interviewing these people. You facilitate the conversation rather than attempting to own it. Thank you.
I think it’s so cool that someone who has played so much on a variety of different songs was/is in awe of other musicians. Just like us regular fans. Such a down to earth guy! And then he makes you laugh! That story WAS priceless. Thanks Joe!

That solo in A Clue is great, on point! I can imagine the band's reaction after. Just lifts the song up entirely. But the story of his dad surprising him with that purchase tugs at my heart as well. Pair that with everything he's gone through...I think that's what Steve's music is all about. Gratitude amidst that great talent.
Incredible interview. I used to work with Steve in the early 90's and this is a riveting interview. I think I now want to relocate to the Nashville area just to be near the scene again and immerse myself in it.

Anyone from Australia will remember just how HUGE the Boz Scaggs album 'Silk Degrees' was. Here is the actual chart run of that album, which took nearly a year to make #1 and then stayed there for four months or so.

If I may be the 100th person to say, "wow, what a humble, regular guy :-)
It is so strange to come across this interview. He talks about Jeff Porcaro. We went to the same junior high and High school together and knew each other but weren't really friends but in 8th grade I was in a band and played on stage just before Jeff and his band came on. They blew us away even back then but the strangest part is whether Steve was in that band or not. I may never know. I picked up the guitar, literally 25 years later and now play in bars or where ever in Thailand for fun. Jeff and Steve seem to have done a bit more with their music.
An immensely likeable and interesting dude.

All Us Boys...why TOTO never plays this live, ever is beyond me! One of their best songs ever! 1979...Hydra LP... Luke is one of those guys you meet and he is the same guy in this interview...which is why he is so loved...true.
Steve mentioned the Terence Boyland album from 1977. I totally missed
that album at the time. Can't say I had ever heard of it through the
years. Cut to just a few years ago while perusing album tracks here on
YT, and the song The War Was Over was recommended. Because I had never
heard the name, and always on the look out for hidden treasure, I gave
it a listen. Instant wow, and a big reason why was the musicianship and
arrangement. When I checked out who played on it, I nodded, "of course."
Yes, I purchased a copy on one of the services.

It's funny that he said that you have to read music to do it right, but looks up to the Beatles, whom none of them could read music. He's sure is a great musician and he sure can tell some good stories.

I just came through the Museum two weeks ago with my sister and brother in law who live in Nashvillel. I live in Los Angeles and I absolutely love the museum. I loved how Steve Lukather is out front along with Billy Gibbons and others above the entrance in huge photographs. Genius! One thing I'd love to see one day soon is a special exhibition of TOTO, revealing all of the many artists the individual members have contributed to. Maybe have an opening night celebration and reception with Luke, Steve Porcaro, David Paich, Joseph Williams, David Hungate and many others there to celebrate their unparalleled history!

How have I missed this one??! I have seen and heard many interviews with Lukather. He is an amazing subject to do. He is honest to a fault, revealing of himself and his history and an eager subject. When he spoke about his dad accompanying him the Guitar Center, my emotions swelled up as well. It’s those moments, small slices of time where our humanity truly presents itself and touches our soul and teaches us something.
This is one, if not ‘the’ best, interview of this great musician! Another triumph Joe!! Another triumph!!!!

What a whirlwind life as a musician Steve Lukather has lead. So amazing when Steve talks about seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan Show stating it was like 'aliens coming from another world ".This is exactly how i described to younger people. Can remember like yesterday,, I was not into music at all as wasn't very old. Had a sister 8 years older than me. Had a B&W tv set in basement of house,,and she had invited all her cronies to watch this event on a Sunday night pretty sure. They all went nuts when the Beatles took to the Stage! Joe, You have most likely heard the back story how Beatles landed on the Ed Sullivan Show via George Harrrison's sister? Have a very cool cool story how i sat with Georges sister and her hubby at some auto races,,and had no clue who she was at the time,in southern IL(7 hours away from where I lived) !! Just a small town rube sitting with what eventually be some monumental music history in a quirky way! Thanks to MHoFM for this interview with Steve Lukather.

So many of these storeies are incredibly unique and your interviewing style is so disarming and comforting that you have pulled out so much from these legendary musicians and artists. Saw Steve in Ringo Starr's All Starr Band on opening night of their current tour at Casino Rama Resort. What a guitar player! I can see why he's in demand as a session player.
