So did I, as I was listening just one or maybe two radio channels (I'm also 52), because of a kind or musical protectionism all the synthpop and coldwave bands were banned in France and replaced by very bad music. Producers invented a rockabilly wave, these were songs with silly lyrics with people trying to imitate Elvis Presley.
No shame in your age! Is that your photo in the avatar? Because you don't look 52! This song still slaps (I'm 46) and I totally feel the nostalgia of this song, even though I didn't discover it until 1988. :-)
I remember dancing to this too, when it was new and played in the discotheques while on holiday in Spain, together with some Human League and Italodisco summerhits. I still love synthpop and its electronic precursors like Kraftwerk.
I was such an introverted young gay man who stood by the dance floor to watch. But this was the song that gave me the urge to dance. After a few drinks, lol
This was dance trance music at its best. Bizarre Love Triangle, Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Smiths/Morrissey, it was 4 hours straight on the dance floor without breaks. I spent the 80's dancing with myself on the dance floor. You didn't need a partner, but if your friends wanted to join, which they did, it was a party on the dance floor. Every high school dance from 1983 through 1987 was to this kind of music.
They took that from italo and Kraftwerk but Blue Monday was another level. I danced this with flashing lights in the disco and it was unprecedented. Very good days.
A dance floor masterpiece. Again, when this song came out we never heard anything like it. Pass around the poppers, totally f-uped. Giving in to the music. Timeless...........It's meant to be almost robotic, lack of feeling.
New Order is absolutely amazing. They emerged from Joy Division, really a punk band, after lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide in 1980. The re-worked band New Order really was one of the leaders of the UK electronica movement, to which Depeche Mode and Echo and the Bunnymen also belong. Legendary band and so many great songs, especially True Faith. Bernard Summers was the guitarist in Joy Division, taking over lead vocals for New Order.
Both Depeche Mode and New Order were great admirators of Kraftwerk, the band that probably made emerge synth pop and techno pop : drums from World in my Eyes are heavly taken from Music Non Stop, and the choir in Blue Monday came from the 1975 Radioactivity.
I still have that 12 inch record. Whenever anyone asks why we danced the way we did in the 80's, I'll refer them to this track. If you can show me another way to dance to this beat, go ahead.
CLASSIC New Order, techno with that bass line coming in.They were SO good at creating these musical layer cakes. You are taking me back to my high school days! Quintessential new wave making me want to put on all my black eyeliner spike my bangs and dance right into the fog from the smoke machine!!!!
I'm a 66 year old Electronic Music fan who as a fan of Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream and other German electronic bands so, when this was released I was so glad that the post-punk bands engaged E.M and produced such fantatic music. New Order were at the forefront of an explosion of British bands who came after them. Depeche Mode, Human League (checkout the "Love & Dancing album) followed later by Eurythics and a swathe of others. Listen to the roots of this type of music by listening to Krafterk. The choir you hear is from the track "Uranium" by Kraftwerk from the 1976 album "rRadioactivity." Nevertheless, New Order altered the British Music scene and set it on a new path much different than anything previous. British "Synth-Pop" as it later was known laid the foundations for later bands and artists that became known all over the world. This song charted more than once and to this day is the best selling 12 inch song EVER!
07 March 1983 Factory Records release of the biggest selling 12'' in history. You should have been on the clubbing scene in Madchester, UK! I was.... ;) and survived, still have a moustache...
I get a kick seeing you react to the soundtrack of my youth… I remember when Blue Monday came out and it was just hypnotic. Later on in life I got to see New Order live a few times and when this song comes on, everyone’s in a frenzy.
If you’re dipping into 80s new wave, indie music check out The Smiths - How Soon is Now, or There is a Light That Never Goes Out. Both songs musically and lyrically brilliant
New Wave in the US. In Europe, New Wave meant something like early Elvis Costello - punk-influenced but more melodic and cerebral. New Order, though, were Post Punk: punk generation influenced by Kraftwerk, Moroder, Krautrock, Bowie, hi-nrg, horror movies...whatever took their fancy. And Blue Monday is the daddy of every vaguely alternative dance track.
@@harripalomaki8796 I thought about mentioning post punk but I was just trying to keep it simple, love post punk, Pil, Killing Joke and The Cult Dreamtime and Love to name a few
I was 17 when this song came out in 83, these were the best years of my life in the 80's and this song was prominent, so many memories of friends, nightclubs, girlfriends etc
They had to plug together equipment that was not meant to work together. There was no standard back then. No drivers, no software conversion. Bands like Kraftwerk had to solder circuits or build some of their synths with knobs and lamps.
I was in 6th grade when this came out & every morning before school as we were waiting for the bus a kid who had a boom box played this song on repeat. EVERY SINGLE DAY! And I still love this song 😂
Love, love, love your reaction. You're obviously a knowledgable young man. Your commentary is enjoyably peppered with references to other musicians & songs. I'm learning from you & from all the informative comments from your listeners. What fun!
Now that you’ve opened that door, you need to hear more New Order. They have a lot of amazing songs. I would recommend Bizarre Love Triangle and True Faith. Both are just phenomenal!
It's somewhere between the mid 80's and early 90's, you have the art rockers, goths, casuals and the dance kids in the room, you put this on, and EVERYONE hits the floor. I know, I was there! I was one of them.
Old school New Order had a lot of songs with 1 or 2 minute instrumental intros before you get to the lyrics. Another one of my favorite intros is the beginning of the 12" version of Perfect Kiss.
They are a groundbreaking New Wave band. If you want to hear more vocals than instrumental then check out "Bizarre Love Triangle" or "True Faith" next. Also if you're interested in their origin story check out the film "Control" which covers the band's period when they were called "Joy Division" and why they had to reinvent themselves in the mid-80's.
New order is the group who recorded this song after splitting up after the singer in joy division took his life.. love will tear us apart was the biggest succes joy division ever had. Please listen to that song.
Love your appreciation of all the layers and all the synth, and that even if you are hearing for the first time, you have all the information about the song and the band handy to share.

Loved your reaction to this song. It’s one of my all time favourites. Had it on tape in the ‘80’s, sadly lost it somewhere in the early ‘90’s. Was so happy to get on CD. Some elements of the song, especially near the end (with the choir) remind me of ABBA’s The day before you came.
Legends., still kicking today,. Many firsts - such as lead bass taking over from lead guitar. Some of the most iconic songs ever. Would suggest their perfect pop song "Crystal"
I'm a Manc, remember those days. Triggered by the Sex Pistols gig at the Free Trade Hall. The way you hear it, everybody in Manchester was there, but there were only about 100 people in the audience. People who changed music. Tony Wilson, troubled genius and all around - well, ask Peter Hook, the bassist with New Order. Anybody else here remember the Hacienda?
I was on holiday with some friends in Majorca in 1984 and danced to this on a full dance floor to start with but I the end there was just me and some Dutch like. we weren't dancing together but we took over the dance floor lol. You're getting Disco vibes because this genre is Hi-NRG : the post Disco era which is really Disco speeded up with more beats per minute. Another huge Hi-NRG hit is "You Spin Me Right Round" by Dead or Alive
You have to listen to 'The Beach' (Side B : Dub Version of this..) and 'The Perfect Kiss'n 'Cinfusion' and 'Bizarre Love Triangle' from NEW ORDER as well :)
Its one of the most iconic electro pop songs of all time and thats why its used in so many films and tv shows even to this day. Like wonder woman 84. Its an 80s anthem & the anthem of a whole genre.
The most irresistible dance song of the 80's. So iconic that it charted three times in the UK (1983-88-93). And when your song is remixed by Quicy Jones himself (88 version), you know you have made something special! And another amazing song with brilliant video is True Faith ua-cam.com/video/mfI1S0PKJR8/v-deo.html

Remember at this time we listened to this on cassette or at a club if they dared to play it. I walked around my block listening to this entire album nonstop
I think something that gets lost on many people with regards to historical context is that this song didn’t just happen to sound like those disco songs you mentioned but they were direct influences to new order. You were spot on about the drum pattern reminding you of Donna Summer. This was pretty revolutionary for its time because no song had ever A. Fully embraced both punk/post punk and disco at the same time, and B. Turned it into a number one hit
Donna Summer, Sylvester and Kraftwerk were big influences on this song. Try The Perfect Kiss next by New Order next- fire! ua-cam.com/video/x3XW6NLILqo/v-deo.html
Totally. As a bonus, the Perfect Kiss video shows a live performance in their recording studio with producer Martin Hannett behind the window. Bernard's voice is a little raw and unsteady but the second half of the song is amazing.
The background "ahhhhhhhh" is a monk choir sample from Kraftwerk that they have resampled. Bernard's voice is duplicated. One track is raw, the other is processed though vocoder.
This was one of my favourite reaction video's to Blue monday. Nice work. I must say though, I'm utterly shocked that you haven't heard this tune in a club before now if this is your first listen. Again nice review.
I'm 56 and I still rip up the dance floor when this comes on in a club.
You don't.
You potter around, half out of breath. Willing you feet and legs to places they can no longer go.

This bass drum was a complete game-changer. People had never heard something like this... The good old days.
That rapid bass drum program, and they have admitted it, came from "Our Love" by Donna Summer on the "Bad Girls" album
They took that from italo and Kraftwerk but Blue Monday was another level. I danced this with flashing lights in the disco and it was unprecedented. Very good days.
