The first song fully realized to take advantage of the emerging 12” single back in 1983. The 12” single gave DJ’s so much more to mix with. That break at 10:45 was a perfect mix point. I know because I used to DJ back in the days of hauling crates of vinyl and using the original Technics 1200 turntables. This song was groundbreaking and still gets dropped into everything. It never stops being great!
Blue Monday On March 7th, 1983, New Order pioneered dance music with the release of the best selling 12 inch single of all time-Blue Monday, whose initial run sold over 700,000 copies. The song (now used to name the depressing 3rd Monday of January) is perhaps the most acclaimed and even influential synth-pop track of all time. My sister still has the original vinyl from 1983
New Order used to be Joy Division but their lead singer committed suicide before they became really known world wide, New Order is the rest of the band and where one of the first "electronic bands"
Great reaction. You're spot on- the singer wasn't the typical singer with range- he is a guitarist/ keyboardist who stepped up when the original singer committed suicide (group was then called Joy Division- you should check them out- heavy, heavy sound). But, like you said, his minimalist vocal style works great with this song. You should also check out The Perfect Kiss by New Order.
I'm not sure I'd go with the observation that the lyrics could have been written by a third grader... I could be way off here and i have no doubt that there are people here who know the background to this song better than I do but to me these lyrics have always been about domestic violence or an abusive relationship... His partner laid their hands upon him and controlled his thoughts, telling him how he should think and feel. To me it reads like he had been in a textbook, narcissistic abusive relationship
Warsaw, Joy Division, New Order, Electronic, The other two, Monico ,Bad lieutenant, Peter Hook & the light... Not just 3rd grade lyrics !!! Pure British post- punk New wave indi electro pop !!!
It was originally an encore track at their gigs. It was programmed into a synth so that would only have to push button and it would play instead of coming back out to play instruments. But it became popular and they added more and more to and vocals and released as a single.
One of the best bands ever, innovators, still kicking to this day. Amazing catalogue - they were the first to use the bass as lead instead of a guitar. Too many classics to list but you can try their "CRYSTAL" a perfect pop song by them. As a side note, Annie Lennox main stream not close to these guys even though lovely voice - these guys were complex, innovators, pioneers, brilliant.
The companion album, Power, Corruption & Lies, is full of danceable tunes. Try The Village and 586, if you enjoy Blue Monday. You'll likely enjoy Confusion, too. Oh and video almost certainly includes colour-coded lyrics, as the album did so with song titles.
This hit like a bomb in a very strange way. Back in ’83, this song was never on radio. But it spread like wildfire due to tape boot-legging in middle schools just like mine. Ah, sixth grade…
To put it in perspective, modern sequencing programs like FL Studio, is in essence mimicking on computers what New Order did here manually. Not saying they were the first to do this, but they were one of the innovators of this sort of sequencing.
I really like their live studio performance for "Perfect Kiss" because you see their process and equipment. Sure the vocals are raw and uneven (Bernard is not a great singer) but the second half is amazing musically.
"New Order" came from a different band "Joy Division" As "Joy Division" they had a lead singer/song writer in Ian Curtis. But just before they were going to tour America (they're from Manchester, UK) Ian Curtis killed himself. "Joy Division" got its name from a group of women used to 'service' Nazi soldiers. When they lost Ian Curtis they changed their name to "New Order" which both reflects there's a new order in the band, and also harks back to Nazi Germany (though the band members are not Nazis) Gillian Gilbert joined them in New Order and later married fellow band-mate Stephen Morris (the drummer) Bernard Sumner had to take over from singing when they went from Joy Division to New Order - so yes, he is not a singer. He was all that they had
Check out Donna Summer (Our Love), Kraftwerk (Uranium), Klein+MBO (Dirty Talk), Sylvester (everything by Sylvester), and Spaghetti Westerns for the original references.
3rd grade? Well.. Bernard Sumner is a little bit more special than that.. Erstwhile of Joy Division. This track was made in 83, nearly 40 yrars ago. Blue Monday is the biggest selling 12" only record of all time, selling more than 4 million copies Worldwide. With 3.2 million vinyl, and 900,000 digital.
Peter Hook wrote this to be a replacement for doing encores. New Order did not like doing encores. Original plan for this song was so band could put it on a loop then get to post concert partying. Also was originally wrote with no lyrics. Then Sumner added lyrics which then made it a song and a track and put on an album
This reactor needs 100 million views, the voice, the singing, the reactions, I love that he thought this song was about BLM, so adorable, young and talented
I love your reactions because you actually have nuance to your understanding and explanations. Your appreciation makes me appreciate these songs I love even more 🙌 and never stop that finger point at ME! 👉👉
What I liked about many New Order songs was vocals weren't dominating, just like one of many instruments creating a complete sound carpet... And so complex orchestration. One from another dimension. It was given to them, no other explanation 🙂
They helped pioneer the electronic pop/dance era, before this it was more the out there bands like Kraftwerk. Now check out how much of this showed up in Rihanna's Shut Up and Drive.
How can you not know this mancunian classic - Manchester uk is the music capital of the world Bee gees, the smiths, joy division, stone roses, oasis to name but a few
Yes he is a singer. "True faith" is a classic video from them also. There was no techno, before this,at least not as popular. Biggest "dance" song of the 80's.
He is singing about his girlfriend who keeps telling him how to feel after the suicide of a band mate. Apparently he wasn’t going fast enough through the grief process. The friend who died was the lead singer before they were named New Order. You should check out Letter to Elise from the Cure. You might like it.
It's thanks to you guys ( Americans) that new order where pioneers over here as far as the dance scene goes.....B,cos they were influenced by Chicago house ,after a visit there back in the day .the new term E.D.M....YOU guys invented it --- hands across the pond 👍👍

The lyrics are simplistic yes, and basic vocals, but the meaning, is that the person in the song is not in a good place and in an abusive and manipulative relationship. But all the FX that you refer to that you have messed about with yourself, everything that came after this song was a direct result of or influenced by them. They invented techniques that we all take for granted such as synched drums
Reading through the comments, I think some people have been getting a little carried away, lol. Yes it was the biggest selling 12" single of all-time but bear in mind that the retail 12" single was only really a significant format for less than 10 years and even during this brief window, sales were pretty low compared to the 7" single and album markets. It did have a big influence on the development of dance music, particularly in the UK. However New Order were not the first, nor even ONE of the first electronic bands. Others were ahead of them by years, both in the UK and elsewhere. Although Blue Monday was influential in the world of dance music, it's a long way from being THE biggest influence, as some are claiming. Don't get me wrong, it's a great track and I have fond memories of dancing to it but some of the claims being made on it's behalf are totally overblown. It's not quite as groundbreaking as some would have you believe, despite what the nostalgia goggles are telling them... :)
Blue Monday was released in 1983, which means it was forward thinking, not retro. To this very day this is the best selling 12" single of all time.
Hook's James Bond bass, man. Savage.
DAMNED RIGHT
I'm 60yrs old now and this is probably STILL my fave track so addictive...omg the nights dancing to this!! if only I had that energy now :(
56 now and totally agree.
I love you, man. Ahahaha

Almost 60
Im totally with u bro!
When this came out, Techno wasn't even a word... This computer base drum beat was something completly new.
Way before its time and still going.
I think that context is so important, this was an epic piece of music at the time. When you look back you realise just how important it is
The word was electronica
No not electronica at all
no electronica or Techno. It was called Synth-Pop by the band

Biggest selling 12"" record in history
And they hardly made a dime off of it at the time.

My sister still has the original vinyl from 1983
And fun fact: they lost money on each copy because they were so perfectionist about the sleeve and artwork.
I have an Original Vinyl as well
40 years old still sounds fresh, brilliant 🎉
Stone. Cold. CLASSIC.
They are the godfathers of techno and raves. All clubs can thank them exponentially!!
indeed, this is E music 6 years early...lol
When this came out over 35 years ago there was NOTHING like it.
New Order used to be Joy Division but their lead singer committed suicide before they became really known world wide, New Order is the rest of the band and where one of the first "electronic bands"
Ian Curtis killed himself on the eve of the band leaving for a tour to America !
If I'm not mistaken, this song was written about his suicide.
Don't forget they added Gillian Gilbert on keyboards.
Great reaction. Favorite song currently
Perfect Kiss is absolute perfection. Between the vocal and Peter's sick bass licks you can't get any better.
Peter Hook's bass is the greatest thing that ever was written.
What is this?
This is the best 80's dance music ever recorded!!!!
One of the best songs of the 80’s brings back memories
1983. They were part of the post punk New Wave synth movement that permeated the 80s. The 80s did synth like no other era.
Apart from 1970s Moog lol
This song is an ultimate favorite song! Love New Order! Saw them in concert in 1987!
"Dance floor. Mullets."

This is only the most famous dance track of all time. Hard to believe he hasn't heard it before but whatever.
This is such a pure reaction. I watch it repeatedly. My favorite way to hear Blue Monday. Love that he called it Blue Moon River 😂
This is how us 60 year old used to roll, not bad not bad at all.
Came out in 1983. The music was mechanical in this era, and the vocals often reflected this.

The greatest of the mid to late 80’s English techno bands. Check out their classic Bizarre Love Triangle.

@@edwardyan751 Yes. The cover by Frente is amazing.

Another club classic from the same year is the 12” mix of Depeche Mode’s Get The Balance Right (Combination Mix)
38 years old. Very, very radical when it came out.
Blue Monday is the instrumental half. The Beach is where the vocals enter.
