Denny Hamlin Reacts to Shane Van Gisbergen’s Retaliation Against Austin Hill

- Опубліковано 25 бер 2024
- Denny Hamlin discusses the last-lap battle between Austin Hill and Shane van Gisbergen in the COTA Xfinity race. He mentions how Austin Hill initiated contact, which lead to SVG’s retaliation. Denny asked Shane about the incident and how it would have been different in the Supercar series. SVG talked to Denny about how he’s adapting to the differences in the way NASCAR officiates races, which leads Denny and Jared to discuss the track-limit penalties at COTA and what, if anything, should be done differently.

SVG is a very fair driver, but he won't be pushed around.
That’s the truth mate , very good mail
And the racing is faster in the Supercars. Been there. Done that. Lesson dealt.
Get real. SVG was taught by the master to be a dirty driver.
@@TassyDeval He runs into every car he comes up to if they don't move over for him. But it won't stay at that. It will continue to get more intense until NASCAR steps in. Until then, most of the drivers will adopt SVG's style because they will have to. NASCAR is only concerned about money, not good racing.
@@x-man5056I think every bump he's done has been a nudge to move out the way. In supercars, it's so much more even that the only way to stop a procession of cars is to be a little dirty. He always did it in a racing sense and didn't take people out often. He just out drove them and people got mad
I think from SVG view point he had to do something. He has to let the guys know he not going to be bullied. I bet people think twice about giving him a shove next time.
Exactly
I’m new to nascar but am I wrong that the SVG vs Austin was the highlight of both races??
@@michaelbuettner1487Yeah but both were snoozers so that’s not saying much
Exactly
@@wyo_garage20 shit track some idiot created it
Austin Hill is already known for brake checking people, I would say its a signature move of his dirty racing repertoire
that's exactly why svg hood buckled after he got into hill, he break checked him..
Not to mention Hill tried to hook SVG on the main straight on the way to the chequered flag, then sideswiped him after the finish… Hill is a B!TcH
Austin caused all the damage to svg’s car.
If Hill wants to fight dirty, SGV is up for it. This ain’t his first rodeo.
I can't stand Austin Hill ever since the Creed incident
The problem is, Austin is never in the wrong. Just ask him.

That's a "I drive for Richard Childress" thing! It's baked into ALL of them and the proof is all amongst us although some people don't remember heros doing any wrong "back in the day." Cough, E, cough Harvick cough "Richard" Skinner, and the real mind blower Austic Dillion the new face of the compound.😅
@@LordBurgerTruth. They are one and the same, both hypocrites
Kirk Shelmerdine said something to the effect of: If Dale was driving the conversion van to the Piggly Wiggly and wrecked into a parked car, we would whip ole boy for parking in our way. I'm against it but can at least appreciate the honesty GREATLY!
He is arrogant!... look what he did to Sheldon!😡
The Nascar boys are going to learn real quick that SVG will race you exactly how you race him. He's very clean.....until you rough him up.....then you're going to get it back double fold!
He said SVG braked earlier…
He’s a late braker, unlikely.
Hill knew what he was doing but tried to blame SVG…
Coming off a restart, tyre temps are down, brake temps are down. You’re usually going to be a little more tentative understandably but the guy behind decides to help you run wide.
SVG and AJ were a class above all day.
Svg goes onto corners deeper than anyone with his technique. He would rarely pull up early .
The penalty was quite severe at 30 seconds . For a repeat offender yes, but not for a single infringement on a restart.
SvG will take it on the chin and concentrate on his next race .
Would be a shame for some foreigner to come in and show up all the good old American boys. Stares at the crowds chanting "usa". Really got me thinking, totally no nationalistic bias from the officials.
I like the "strike" rule or "warning" rulle. You get 1 warning or strike, then you get a 5 sec penalty each time after that. They hold you during a green pit stop, penalize you at the end of the race or if it happens in the final laps of a stage, you get moved back those 5 seconds in the running roder, behind the cars that would be ahead as a result (before pit stops).
A drive thru or 30 secs is just way too much for missing a mark by 2 inches.
That sounds perfectly rational to me
The V8 Supercar series has a curb strike rule where drivers get 5 strikes before a 15sec penalty is applied. I think Nascar should implement the same but maybe give drivers 2 or three only. It's not perfect as drivers save them up until the last laps and then straight line where they can but better than a no warning PLP or 30 second end of race penalty which doesn't fit the crime. If there is one thing the established drivers have learned this weekend is that you don't try and rough up SVG as he will return back with interest! Loving SVG's move to Nascar. As a Kiwi I have never watched so much Nascar or listened to so many podcasts. This is way better than the coverage we get with Supercars on our part of the world.
Nascar drivers can't navigate around the curbs and finish so they eliminate stuff to hit. Real twink nerf the world crap!
The thing is, everybody knows that SVG was the best driver on the day in that race, and he was driving away from everybody until those stupid cautions happened. We then watched Hill drive SVG so far past the corner he ended up off the track. SVG had to then Pay him back so that people knew that they couldn’t get away with that crap. It’s just disappointing that after all of that he loses an awesome days work and a good result because of a ridiculous rule by NASCAR, just because he slid across the corner by maybe 2 inches while following hill, trying to get the position back. It makes no sense. SVG should have won that race and most people know it.
😂😂
No question. SVG's fastest lap was four tenths on the second fastest guy. Also had to defend multiple late restarts due to ouble overtime.
He was robbed!
SVG and AJ both were leading the pack all day
Yet, Larson got tires and made his way back to the front. No matter how good SVG was all day, his team didn't take tires, and he was out-strategied and out-driven by Larson and their team. I love SVG and his story and his skill. He got straight up beat and dumped.
It was just SVG saying “ don’t mess with me as I will stick up for myself” These are hard core and if you don’t stick up for yourself then you will be bullied everywhere. SVG has got them worried and so they should be..
Bullying won't work on most kiwis and Aussies. it just makes them go harder

SVG had just led most of this race and a bum like Hill does that to you, what would you do?
100% correct mate.
I'd stay on the course lol 😅
SVG ran out of tyres by 5 laps to short but stayed afloat for 4 restarts
front bum?
SVG has some mad ability here, he races clean, but can also race dirty if provoked, and normally comes out better off.
SVG Didn't have a buckled hood till Austin brake checked him and he hit him the 2nd time.
Never watched an xfinity race until this season. Only watching for SVG.
Same. Haven't watched any Nascar at all for years but now Shane's there I've watched every Xfinity and Cup race. In fact, Supercars were racing this weekend and I couldn't be bothered paying the twenty bucks to watch it on Sky. Am enjoying the Nascar format. And it's every weekend!

Yep. Knowing how Shane just gets it right no matter what he does, I'd probably watch him play marbles.
In fact, you could probably get half the world to watch potato sack races if they entered Shane.
He’s a breathe of fresh air. I’m a longtime Nascar fan, early ‘90’s when I was a kid, and have seen many “roadcourse ringers” come in and everyone oohed and ahed and they generally didn’t run too well, always messed something up. SVG won Chicago, having never run there or the car.
I was sold then

Shane has incredible ability that keeps on growing.
Thugs in control towers & in other cars will attack him. He'll find a way to drive around all of that. He really is wholesome entertainment.

I'm a longtime dirt racer. An eye for an eye? Lord NO. You take my eye and I'll take ATLEAST both of yours. Paybacks are not equal. Interest is always compounded.
Well said.
If you don't give dirty drivers opitions to be dirty drivers then the problem is solved..l say f...Austin hill. They are there to race, not to be the guy with the least skill and the smallest brain.

@mattjames2728 well stated. Yes sir.

Nascar doesn't' use common sense when making up their nonsense rules for the weekend...
I’m glad SVG didn’t let him win the race.
Shane will love it, his bump and runs were more subtle in Australia
They had to be on account of how Supercars is and how you'd be penalised.
@@kevkoala 💯
NASCAR is the Wrestling of the Motorsport world. As an Aussie fan, I like it and hate it but it sure is entertaining.
One thing that Supercars has are sensors in the track and transponders underneath the cars. When a car exceeds track limits, Race Control is notified immediately of the breach and when all chances have been used up a penalty is then applied.
Being Australian what blew me away was how far are youse can go out of track limits if the race was kept in within the limits shame would’ve won that by half a lap
Youse. Lmfao. Definitely an Aussie... 👍🏻
SVG won’t take a backward step. His an ANZAC! 🇦🇺🇳🇿
What you see is what you get in NZ and OZ. Nobody's faking it here. Shane has always been a straight shooter, and he ain't taking crap from anyone. We Holden fans love our Kiwi brother and know he will do what ever it takes. You better start learning the Haka, and how to use those Footballs. A Pakeha Prince of the Pedal has arrived. And behold a Nascar Horse and his name that sat in it was Gis, and Hell and Toe followed him.
There should’ve been something set up like at the Roval where drivers have a safe designated place to stop on the track to quickly take a minor penalty
A 5 to 10 second stop and go penalty rather than the 30 second trip down pit road
SVG maybe new, he may be learning Nascar, but not racing. He may be polite in interviews, but he is no motor racing rookie. He is used to the argy bargy of Supercars and of LeMans. He is used to the aggression. You can earn a living staying near the back of the Nascar field, not in Supercars. He has been a ruthless competitor for 20 years. He's not naive. And he does not take prisoners. To him, coming second is to be the first of the losers. He did not get the nickname The Spider for nothing. This is the difference between a New Zealander and an Australian. A NZ'er has to always prove he deserves the win, whether its rugby or motor racing. It's the small country syndrome. It's not the Dale Earnhardt type of aggression. Its the "don't mess with me or you are my target", kind. It's the, "if you are slower than me then get out of my way" type of competitive behaviour.
Indeed ... SVG is world class ... On any race circuit ... In any car ... Never underestimate his abilities 🫡
It was lazy. Shane was taking the corner at the correct speed and line. Hill didn't, he went in way too fast and bounced off Shane. If SVG wasn't there Hill would have spun out going as fast as he was into the corner.
Bruh idc thst Hill went in deep it was for a win. I'm mad he doesn't admit this and acts like its always someone else's fault.
@@falloutboy9424 I woulda had some respect for Hill if he'd just admit that
Yes in Supercars, Austin will be penalised for the move in the 1st corner, which in my opinion is right. It also prevents unnecessary contact.
Im surprised Andy Petree didnt go and yell at SVG.....
Or old man Childress have a meltdown and call Shane the dumbest son of a bitch in racing. Austin Hill is garbage along with Dick Childress
How to take svg out by brake checking him. Hill can't win a race on skill alone but poor sportmanship

I always find it funny when these "rough & tough" and "blue collar" guys get just as whiny and petty as the "new generation" they and their fans hate so much 😂
To be fair, its only a few of them
Got to say as a motorsport fan watching Nascar and Xfinity is very frustrating, with all the contact and track limit stuff. Using the run off areas as part of the track is just crazy, stick to the track, it's pretty easy. And yellow resets just to let slow cars catch up? Is this racing...
It's nascar don't watch if you don't like it
@@MoterSport33 it died the day Dale died....
@@MoterSport33 Yes, it's NASCAR - i.e. trash, which is why the world doesn't watch it. It's a trash series for trash drivers and trash viewers.
Well, SVG has put EVERYBODY on notice that HE WON'T TOLERATE BULLSHIT...
i was at this race Saturday. SVG had that race won. Austin Hill did much more than "move him". He is known for brake checking people and getting away with it. I would've been pissed off too. Although he's not wrong, i cant take Denny Hamlin seriously on this subject. He does the same exact thing Austin Hill did on Saturday.
Considering COTA is a F1 track (literally was made for F1), seeing what FIA is now asking from Red Bull Ring, asking to change the asphalt runoff to gravel would be great for COTA as well. Actually every single track should have like 1.5 metre width kerbs instead of the current ones and then straight after have either gravel or grass. That way it's self policing and no need for track limit penalties
Thank you for the video.
Yes common sense. I know Chase Elliott lost the rear of the car going thru the esses, straightened her up but obviously straight lines the chicane. No way he gained time doing that.... still got a penalty
“Bump and Run” in Supercars is not allowed. Pass clean, without contact. Basically, if you don’t earn the spot, give the spot back or you’ll be forced to give it back.
A prime example would be Bathurst 2016. SVG’s teammate Jamie Whincup hit Scott McLaughlin off, continued to race, gained a penalty, Crossed the line first, but the second car, number 19 Won.
I think it's more about gaining an advantage for a bump in SC's, it happens but, if it's a deliberate shove that pushes a car out of the way for that advatage that would be a penalty that had to be redressed on track, (give the postion back) or get a penalty. Side note SVG is not afraid to give as good as he gets. AU
I hate that I’m starting to enjoy this show 😂
Awesome content
SVG did redress the place he gained as a result of running into the back of Austin - and then retook the position fairly.
In Aussie at circuits like Surfers Paradise where we have rumble stripped chicanes, the rule is minimum of two tyres on the black stuff at all times. Sensible. Allows the driver to utilise the strips but still stay on the racetrack. COTA is a farce in my opinion. The racing surface should be where the cars are forced to race. On a walled street circuit they stay on the race surface by simply driving to the conditions to do so. At this elite level it shouldn't be a problem.
SVG is becoming one of my favorite drivers………….Denny is my favorite of course 👍🏼
Denny is awful
I loved it. SVG looking like a stock car driver now
To me they should’ve made a joker lane through the outside of the corners to where you have a penalty but all it does it penalize you a little bit of time rather than 30 seconds.
2nd to 28th... just a tad harsh 😅
As an Austin Hill fan, my issue wasn't with the fact that SVG moved him out of the way, i completely understood why he did that, my issue was the fact that he did it so hard that his front end was caved in, AND he didn't even win the race
Larson’s analysis was exactly right. Larson waited for the inevitable retaliation by SVG.
I like the fact that once SVG got served up. That he gave one back straight away.
He needs to stand his ground now and make it known that he's not going to be bullied.
Or he's going to get roughed up every week.
As for the penalty, I guess that Nascar were consistent and dished out the same to everyone.
It just sucks thats all.
Earlier on you can maybe come back to the front. But That late in the race, youre just screwed.
30 seconds is like being hung for a parking ticket.
Also I dont understand why a driver can cut some corners and not others. Could someone explain that please.
Track limits: There are different cases that should be handled differently. In the case where driver A forces driver B to go off-course, it seems to me that driver A should be penalized, not driver B. Yes/No?
Man I love this show,
The penalty should be a stop and go set up somewhere on the track, just like how they have it set up on the Roval. A pass through is so excessive
In supercargo they have a b pillar rule also. If someone gets beside you to the point of the b pillar, you get right of way
SVG is the best of the BEST!!! full stop so putting him into your motorsport is the wise decision as you guys have sh**loads of money to play with and he wants ... innnnn!!
I think Shane was putting a little understanding out there in the open with Hill. Punch me? expect to get punched back. Hill was whooped and he knew it - options? be a dick and see what happens. He saw what happens if you dick off to SVG who's done nothing but race you clean all day ~ Like Shane said "Talk about? I guess, don't know what there is to talk about" ~ Austin would agree.
I would think less of SVG if he hadn't knocked him on his ass. You were BEAT Austin! and you know it!
Exactly. Hill knew he had nothing for SVG when it comes to racing skill so he had to push him off the track to try and beat him.
Austin already spun Chandler Smith by pushing the 8 car into Chandler. What goes around comes around. Maybe he should try to improve his passing skills. He certainly needs to own up to his actions instead of trying to blame others.
Me being a moron. Either have track limits or not. Why only track limits on parts of the track. Strike rule works. It give a bit of slack then tidies up your lines real quick.
SVG never forgets.
hill has a major anger and ego issue if he ever makes cup he cant be either or he wont win ever and he will get into many fights
SVG is the Man the Myth and the Legend, he will go down in racing history as 1 of the best ever.
Gizzy FTW up you Merika !
I like the horse racing rule. You finish behind the horse you fouled. So if it’s just on place or six, ten or twenty spots you lose it’s still your fault you fouled. Last year we saw Bubba Wallace get a race suspension when he wasn’t even in the playoffs. That is ridiculous. Egregious penalties need to make folks remember the rules.
hill has skills, its the chip on his shoulder that turns off most fans.if hill makes it to cup in the 3 car, i look for hill & busch to have MANY disagreements in the future.kyle wont take hills crap moves.could you imagine if he raced kyle like he did sheldon creed?
Big difference between racing a mid-tier driver in a mid-tier series and being anywhere near at top-tier driver in the top-tier series. Kyle Busch won't have to worry about Austin Hill in the 3. They won't be anywhere near each other, and if Austin Hill races like that for 25th, Kyle Busch won't be the only one he'll have to worry about. He has to get past the rolling roadblock Carson Hocevar first.
If he ever makes it to cup he will get taught a lesson
AJ pushed SVG wide so he could get past, SVG pushed AJ wide to get his place back.
In V8 Supercars AJ would have had to redress the position or cop a penalty.
Running each other off the track is why the rest of the world doesn't watch NASCAR.
Yes the track limits are stupid, and again the only place it happens is NASCAR. Use the centre of the car over the white line on the corners, I'm not talking about the run off areas, but you shouldn't be using run off areas as acceleration areas.
What's the point of having a track if you don't have to drive on it.
There are driving in the track dude. If you don't like it don't watch.
@@alexfire53-ze7px Wonderfully mature response mate...!!!
@@alexfire53-ze7px As I said, there is a reason why the rest of the world doesn't watch NASCAR, and since viewer numbers are dwindling in the States as well, wouldn't it be better to encourage as many people as possible to start watching.
I made a suggestion with something that may be a possible improvement, maybe, maybe not, but you could have at least encouraged a discussion or a debate on why you prefer to have drivers using bash and crash techniques over drivers using skills and race craft to get the best lap times out of their cars.
@@stevegraham3817 this Nascar m8 there have being doing this for 76 years so if you don't like it don't watch simple as that Buddy.
@@alexfire53-ze7px Yeah, don't worry I won't be watching it. In 45 years of watching motor racing of every kind that has any sort of mechanical propulsion in every sort of vehicle, vessel, and craft, I can sadly say I have never watched a full NASCAR or NASCAR derivative race.
I thought this would be the era that finally changed my mind, but sadly, it is looking more likely that I won't watch it this time around either.
Hopefully SVG will move across to Indy Cars where the real talent is because I would still like to watch him race.
Damn Denny love the dunks!
Pushing people off is not racing. Nascar is the only race series that I know of that allows if not encourages drivers to bump and run.
Seemed like Hill checked up a little when SVG hit him which made the hit a bit more severe, otherwise I think Hill would have been punted out of the way with that amount of force if his car was near the limit.
T1 is always tricky on a tight turn like that. If you're way on the inside like that, you'll have to brake earlier than the rest simply because you're sacrificing a wider arc for track position. At T1, looked like Hill applied some pressure and it got paid back to him when he checked up later.
I think you yanks have no idea as yet what SVG is capable of and what is coming for you. That was just a very small taste of what SVG has in his kit bag. He will out think, out drive, out maneuver and psyche out his competition and then take wins and ultimately championships. It’s what he has done in every discipline he has competed in. Eastern Creek raceway, in a Supercar a few years back. Drying wet track. He is on overheating wets. Running down the main straight at nearly 300km/h putting the left hand tires on the grass one lap then the right hand tires on the grass the next, to keep them cool so he could win the race! He is a master and probably will be one of the greatest multi discipline drivers in history.
In the words of the late great D. Earnhardt, got to stand your ground, and i aint gonna take it. Got to do what you got to do SVG.
Just saying watch the move in very slow motion and it appears Hill hit the brakes of missed a gear, anyways Hill should race with skill not argy bargy as you will always get one back just when you don't need it.
Bathurst 1000, for example is 1000 kilometers of race, but the race course itself is actual roads that normal people drive on, on day to day deliveries coming in and leaving bathurst. this course also has Absolutely HUGE undulations and HUGE extra-vert-ad areas then with the weather also in situ. and traffic and tyre pressures its absolutely serious buisiness.
Beyond The V8 supercar Bathurst i think the next biggest think would have to be the ISLE of MAN TT
That is insane even though its on 2 wheels
Austin Hill doesn’t strike me as a brilliant thinker. Talented? Absolutely. Smart? Debatable. Highly debatable.
I say penalize for every corner or none. Or better yet forget Austin and go to Rockingham.
Shane was penalized not for pushing hill but for going ovef the racing line same as what happens in motogp ,love respect to all drivers
SVG will learn to cash those checks when the championship is on the line.
Can't look after the car bumping other drivers can ruin your race SVG knows that, drivers who engage in that sort of thing could end in tears somewhere down the line.
Shane perfected the bump and run long before he went to NASCAR. I think he was just sending a message that he bites back.
SVG is learning fast
You get what you give , it’s racing all around the world.
Hamlin didn't mind wrecking Chase Elliot for a win at Martinsville but threw a temper tantrum when someone did it to him and screwed up someone's victory celebration
Pillsbury Dough Boy Hill loves dishing it out but can never take it.
If you dish it out, you best be able to take it.
the old adage of "don't start something you can't finish" springs to mind ........... SVG fights hard but fair.... but I'm a kiwi so probably as little biased 🤣
Shane is definitely a gentleman by NASCAR standards - even if he pushed the limits in Supercars from time to time :P
But seriously, give him a bit more experience in NASCAR and he'll be exactly as menacing with the bumper as he wants/needs to be. Excited to see him here!
Welcome to a generation of drivers who don’t understand “consequence for your actions”.
SVG had no part in that Austin brake checked him
In Supercars Austin Hill would have been given at least a 5 second penalty for a bump and run,
They should make the track be unforgiving if you cut the corner too much. You don't get a penalty, you hit a curb instead, which might inflict damage. Would make for some risks if you do it to much...
It's a pity SVG didn't try and pass and hit him post race they had tyre disadvantage to winner and penalty cost him in the end...
Nascar better not start having driver penalties. That's what separates it and makes it better from other car racing categories.
If they think they can intimate this softly spoken friendly kiwi they got it all wrong...
SVG is bad ass😂😂😂
Race people back how they race you. Have to draw a line as a racer in NASCAR.
Nascars didn't want svg showing the drivers up, So they penalized him
You can go under the yellow line at the speedways as long as you don't gain an advantage.
most series are underfunded hence the reason they have such strict rules and penalties for contact and then open wheel you cant bump bc your car will be destroyed. all the outsiders that want to just regulate nascar and make it like every other league just need to shut the hell up and watch those series if that is what you like.
You don’t mess with SVG he will put you in your place
Hot damn. I actually agree with Denny for a change 😂
Love SVG
Don't worry ,SHANE CAN DISH IT OUT IF HE WANTS TO
nascar could very easily become 2nd fiddle to a Supercar Series if ever introduced to the American crowd.
Starting with me.
