Yes common sense. I know Chase Elliott lost the rear of the car going thru the esses, straightened her up but obviously straight lines the chicane. No way he gained time doing that.... still got a penalty
Considering COTA is a F1 track (literally was made for F1), seeing what FIA is now asking from Red Bull Ring, asking to change the asphalt runoff to gravel would be great for COTA as well. Actually every single track should have like 1.5 metre width kerbs instead of the current ones and then straight after have either gravel or grass. That way it's self policing and no need for track limit penalties
“Bump and Run” in Supercars is not allowed. Pass clean, without contact. Basically, if you don’t earn the spot, give the spot back or you’ll be forced to give it back. A prime example would be Bathurst 2016. SVG’s teammate Jamie Whincup hit Scott McLaughlin off, continued to race, gained a penalty, Crossed the line first, but the second car, number 19 Won.
i was at this race Saturday. SVG had that race won. Austin Hill did much more than "move him". He is known for brake checking people and getting away with it. I would've been pissed off too. Although he's not wrong, i cant take Denny Hamlin seriously on this subject. He does the same exact thing Austin Hill did on Saturday.
I think it's more about gaining an advantage for a bump in SC's, it happens but, if it's a deliberate shove that pushes a car out of the way for that advatage that would be a penalty that had to be redressed on track, (give the postion back) or get a penalty. Side note SVG is not afraid to give as good as he gets. AU
I always find it funny when these "rough & tough" and "blue collar" guys get just as whiny and petty as the "new generation" they and their fans hate so much 😂
In Aussie at circuits like Surfers Paradise where we have rumble stripped chicanes, the rule is minimum of two tyres on the black stuff at all times. Sensible. Allows the driver to utilise the strips but still stay on the racetrack. COTA is a farce in my opinion. The racing surface should be where the cars are forced to race. On a walled street circuit they stay on the race surface by simply driving to the conditions to do so. At this elite level it shouldn't be a problem.
I like the fact that once SVG got served up. That he gave one back straight away. He needs to stand his ground now and make it known that he's not going to be bullied. Or he's going to get roughed up every week. As for the penalty, I guess that Nascar were consistent and dished out the same to everyone. It just sucks thats all. Earlier on you can maybe come back to the front. But That late in the race, youre just screwed. 30 seconds is like being hung for a parking ticket. Also I dont understand why a driver can cut some corners and not others. Could someone explain that please.
To me they should’ve made a joker lane through the outside of the corners to where you have a penalty but all it does it penalize you a little bit of time rather than 30 seconds.
hill has skills, its the chip on his shoulder that turns off most fans.if hill makes it to cup in the 3 car, i look for hill & busch to have MANY disagreements in the future.kyle wont take hills crap moves.could you imagine if he raced kyle like he did sheldon creed?
Big difference between racing a mid-tier driver in a mid-tier series and being anywhere near at top-tier driver in the top-tier series. Kyle Busch won't have to worry about Austin Hill in the 3. They won't be anywhere near each other, and if Austin Hill races like that for 25th, Kyle Busch won't be the only one he'll have to worry about. He has to get past the rolling roadblock Carson Hocevar first.
Track limits: There are different cases that should be handled differently. In the case where driver A forces driver B to go off-course, it seems to me that driver A should be penalized, not driver B. Yes/No?
I think Shane was putting a little understanding out there in the open with Hill. Punch me? expect to get punched back. Hill was whooped and he knew it - options? be a dick and see what happens. He saw what happens if you dick off to SVG who's done nothing but race you clean all day ~ Like Shane said "Talk about? I guess, don't know what there is to talk about" ~ Austin would agree. I would think less of SVG if he hadn't knocked him on his ass. You were BEAT Austin! and you know it!
AJ pushed SVG wide so he could get past, SVG pushed AJ wide to get his place back. In V8 Supercars AJ would have had to redress the position or cop a penalty. Running each other off the track is why the rest of the world doesn't watch NASCAR. Yes the track limits are stupid, and again the only place it happens is NASCAR. Use the centre of the car over the white line on the corners, I'm not talking about the run off areas, but you shouldn't be using run off areas as acceleration areas. What's the point of having a track if you don't have to drive on it.
@@Vivid-197 As I said, there is a reason why the rest of the world doesn't watch NASCAR, and since viewer numbers are dwindling in the States as well, wouldn't it be better to encourage as many people as possible to start watching. I made a suggestion with something that may be a possible improvement, maybe, maybe not, but you could have at least encouraged a discussion or a debate on why you prefer to have drivers using bash and crash techniques over drivers using skills and race craft to get the best lap times out of their cars.
@@Vivid-197 Yeah, don't worry I won't be watching it. In 45 years of watching motor racing of every kind that has any sort of mechanical propulsion in every sort of vehicle, vessel, and craft, I can sadly say I have never watched a full NASCAR or NASCAR derivative race. I thought this would be the era that finally changed my mind, but sadly, it is looking more likely that I won't watch it this time around either. Hopefully SVG will move across to Indy Cars where the real talent is because I would still like to watch him race.
Me being a moron. Either have track limits or not. Why only track limits on parts of the track. Strike rule works. It give a bit of slack then tidies up your lines real quick.
I think you yanks have no idea as yet what SVG is capable of and what is coming for you. That was just a very small taste of what SVG has in his kit bag. He will out think, out drive, out maneuver and psyche out his competition and then take wins and ultimately championships. It’s what he has done in every discipline he has competed in. Eastern Creek raceway, in a Supercar a few years back. Drying wet track. He is on overheating wets. Running down the main straight at nearly 300km/h putting the left hand tires on the grass one lap then the right hand tires on the grass the next, to keep them cool so he could win the race! He is a master and probably will be one of the greatest multi discipline drivers in history.
Austin already spun Chandler Smith by pushing the 8 car into Chandler. What goes around comes around. Maybe he should try to improve his passing skills. He certainly needs to own up to his actions instead of trying to blame others.
I like the horse racing rule. You finish behind the horse you fouled. So if it’s just on place or six, ten or twenty spots you lose it’s still your fault you fouled. Last year we saw Bubba Wallace get a race suspension when he wasn’t even in the playoffs. That is ridiculous. Egregious penalties need to make folks remember the rules.
Seemed like Hill checked up a little when SVG hit him which made the hit a bit more severe, otherwise I think Hill would have been punted out of the way with that amount of force if his car was near the limit. T1 is always tricky on a tight turn like that. If you're way on the inside like that, you'll have to brake earlier than the rest simply because you're sacrificing a wider arc for track position. At T1, looked like Hill applied some pressure and it got paid back to him when he checked up later.
I’m pretty sure I’m in the minority here, but I thought this past race just looked super unprofessional. You guys don’t ignore track limits like y’all did this weekend when you race Sonoma or Watkins Glen. But for COTA everyone just ignores the lines and takes corners as wide as they want. It doesn’t look as bad as Phoenix does, but still just looks a little amateurish.
SVG is the best of the BEST!!! full stop so putting him into your motorsport is the wise decision as you guys have sh**loads of money to play with and he wants ... innnnn!!
Much prefer Supercars where we have track limits on EVERY corner. It just made the NASCAR races look lazy and sloppy with cars being so far outside the delineated track…
lmao, austin is just like denny and KB were yrs ago. ok for them to wreck someone , but when they got wrecked they'd cry like 5 yr olds. remember denny . austin is a punk kid that has to just grow up like denny and kb. the worst cyr babies ever in nascar
most series are underfunded hence the reason they have such strict rules and penalties for contact and then open wheel you cant bump bc your car will be destroyed. all the outsiders that want to just regulate nascar and make it like every other league just need to shut the hell up and watch those series if that is what you like.
Austin Hill is always blameless. His actions toward Sheldon Creed last year, including applauding Sheldon's crew, were the work of an entitled brat, while his attitude toward SVG was that of a feral Karen. It's really too bad as he's a very good driver and will be in Cup soon. If he'd man up and quit acting like a spoiled child it would only help his career, but I'm not holding my breath waiting.
the old adage of "don't start something you can't finish" springs to mind ........... SVG fights hard but fair.... but I'm a kiwi so probably as little biased 🤣
Shane is definitely a gentleman by NASCAR standards - even if he pushed the limits in Supercars from time to time :P But seriously, give him a bit more experience in NASCAR and he'll be exactly as menacing with the bumper as he wants/needs to be. Excited to see him here!
Bathurst 1000, for example is 1000 kilometers of race, but the race course itself is actual roads that normal people drive on, on day to day deliveries coming in and leaving bathurst. this course also has Absolutely HUGE undulations and HUGE extra-vert-ad areas then with the weather also in situ. and traffic and tyre pressures its absolutely serious buisiness. Beyond The V8 supercar Bathurst i think the next biggest think would have to be the ISLE of MAN TT That is insane even though its on 2 wheels
As an Austin Hill fan, my issue wasn't with the fact that SVG moved him out of the way, i completely understood why he did that, my issue was the fact that he did it so hard that his front end was caved in, AND he didn't even win the race
Hamlin didn't mind wrecking Chase Elliot for a win at Martinsville but threw a temper tantrum when someone did it to him and screwed up someone's victory celebration
They should make the track be unforgiving if you cut the corner too much. You don't get a penalty, you hit a curb instead, which might inflict damage. Would make for some risks if you do it to much...
What also makes this worse is how we're constantly talking about track limits. I don't want to watch a race where half the talk is about track limits. It's part of why I lost interest in F1. Austria and the desert tracks are a misery to watch because that's half the discussion of the weekend. Fortunately, it's not as much of an issue in NASCAR because places like Watkins Glen and Sonoma exist. But there can be something like a no advantage rule or strike system. As much as I feel the coming to the stop rule is pretty overblown, it's not as bad. At COTA, there's also the penalty loop. Instead of a drive-through, running that would look less awful.
He doesn't need to catch on, it's drivers like Hill that need too. In Supercars retaliation is a huge problem, because it's considered to be "ok" culturally. The series had to crack down on it just to stop people being put into the wall every race. Everyone is saying the penalty is harsh, but SVG is used to getting suspended for something like that. A penalty like that isn't a deterrent to a guy like SVG.
As an Australia viewer, Austin hill needs to stay his own lane & Don’t ever mess with SVG! He’s has best resume in his racing career. A 3 time Supercars Champion & 3 time Bathurst 1000 winner! 🏆 & Austin will never become a nascar champion if he going to continue his dirty driving style!

SVG did redress the place he gained as a result of running into the back of Austin - and then retook the position fairly.
AU
I always find it funny when these "rough & tough" and "blue collar" guys get just as whiny and petty as the "new generation" they and their fans hate so much 😂
To be fair, its only a few of them
You all no we Oz is takin over ya motorsport podiums ey cowboys..we can roll with ya Hamlin punches n ya push to pass clank rules..we got you
In Aussie at circuits like Surfers Paradise where we have rumble stripped chicanes, the rule is minimum of two tyres on the black stuff at all times.
Well, SVG has put EVERYBODY on notice that HE WON'T TOLERATE BULLSHIT...
SVG is the Man the Myth and the Legend, he will go down in racing history as 1 of the best ever.
Gizzy FTW up you Merika !
If he ever makes it to cup he will get taught a lesson
Track limits: There are different cases that should be handled differently. In the case where driver A forces driver B to go off-course, it seems to me that driver A should be penalized, not driver B. Yes/No?
The penalty should be a stop and go set up somewhere on the track, just like how they have it set up on the Roval. A pass through is so excessive
Exactly. Hill knew he had nothing for SVG when it comes to racing skill so he had to push him off the track to try and beat him.
I hate that I’m starting to enjoy this show 😂
AJ pushed SVG wide so he could get past, SVG pushed AJ wide to get his place back.
There are driving in the track dude. If you don't like it don't watch.
@@Vivid-197 Wonderfully mature response mate...!!!
@@stevegraham3817 this Nascar m8 there have being doing this for 76 years so if you don't like it don't watch simple as that Buddy.
SVG is becoming one of my favorite drivers………….Denny is my favorite of course 👍🏼
Denny is awful
Me being a moron. Either have track limits or not. Why only track limits on parts of the track. Strike rule works. It give a bit of slack then tidies up your lines real quick.
I loved it. SVG looking like a stock car driver now
Austin Hill doesn’t strike me as a brilliant thinker. Talented? Absolutely. Smart? Debatable. Highly debatable.
2nd to 28th... just a tad harsh 😅
hill has a major anger and ego issue if he ever makes cup he cant be either or he wont win ever and he will get into many fights
Denny your ankles need sun if your gonna wear funny pants but your viewpoint on Austin Mole Hill was on point!
Yep, hill billy racing
I say penalize for every corner or none. Or better yet forget Austin and go to Rockingham.
In supercargo they have a b pillar rule also. If someone gets beside you to the point of the b pillar, you get right of way
Awesome content
It's a pity SVG didn't try and pass and hit him post race they had tyre disadvantage to winner and penalty cost him in the end...
Man I love this show,
Yoi dont muck around with Gizzy. Hill found that out.
most series are underfunded hence the reason they have such strict rules and penalties for contact and then open wheel you cant bump bc your car will be destroyed. all the outsiders that want to just regulate nascar and make it like every other league just need to shut the hell up and watch those series if that is what you like.
Pillsbury Dough Boy Hill loves dishing it out but can never take it.
the old adage of "don't start something you can't finish" springs to mind ........... SVG fights hard but fair.... but I'm a kiwi so probably as little biased 🤣
Shane is definitely a gentleman by NASCAR standards - even if he pushed the limits in Supercars from time to time :P
But seriously, give him a bit more experience in NASCAR and he'll be exactly as menacing with the bumper as he wants/needs to be.
Beyond The V8 supercar Bathurst i think the next biggest think would have to be the ISLE of MAN TT
That is insane even though its on 2 wheels
As an Austin Hill fan, my issue wasn't with the fact that SVG moved him out of the way, i completely understood why he did that, my issue was the fact that he did it so hard that his front end was caved in, AND he didn't even win the race
Hamlin didn't mind wrecking Chase Elliot for a win at Martinsville but threw a temper tantrum when someone did it to him and screwed up someone's victory celebration
In Supercars Austin Hill would have been given at least a 5 second penalty for a bump and run,
You get what you give , it’s racing all around the world.
They should make the track be unforgiving if you cut the corner too much. You don't get a penalty, you hit a curb instead, which might inflict damage. Would make for some risks if you do it to much...
Race people back how they race you. Have to draw a line as a racer in NASCAR.
SVG had no part in that Austin brake checked him
Nascars didn't want svg showing the drivers up, So they penalized him
Shane perfected the bump and run long before he went to NASCAR. I think he was just sending a message that he bites back.
If you dish it out, you best be able to take it.
Damn Denny love the dunks!
Larson’s analysis was exactly right. Larson waited for the inevitable retaliation by SVG.
Maybe it will brew his first rivalry in NASCAR. I think he'll catch on quickly. He still finished ahead of Hill with a buckled front.
@@louiscypher4186 I agree
If you can't hack the pace of a KIWI,get out of the race mate
Pushing people off is not racing. Nascar is the only race series that I know of that allows if not encourages drivers to bump and run.
Dude did you not see Austin knocked a dude out??
@@Vivid-197 So what ? smh
@@Vivid-197 and? Meh
@@Vivid-197 NEVER bully a Kiwi or an Australian as we don't take no shit or back down! Want to take a swing? C'mon C#@T, bring it!
Nascar better not start having driver penalties. That's what separates it and makes it better from other car racing categories.
Im so glad Nascar doesn't penalize like supercars and f1. I wouldn't watch it if they penalized for bumping.
Hot damn. I actually agree with Denny for a change 😂
you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes! That being said, who cares what Denny Hamlin thinks.
You can go under the yellow line at the speedways as long as you don't gain an advantage.
100% agreed with McDowell.. CURBS BABY! If you don't wanna tear up your car then stay on the track .. Simple
