- For the first time in 60 years, a driver making their cup series debut won the race - which also happened to be the first race ever at this track or in this style. So, was this a good thing for NASCAR or was it detrimental? DH gives his take.

I don't think people really appreciate what this guy accomplished Sunday. While half the field was busy running into the tires this guy never put a wheel out of place all day long.
Denny, Chase, Truex, Reddick, and Bell all had issues. Maybe 5 of the top 6ish road course drivers in NASCAR. And SVG never missed
Wait what? I’m confused I heard nothing but everyone say how awesome this guy was. How much more do they need to do to satisfy you? Suck his dick? I mean that’s what it seems like. Go look how many people are like you in this comment section saying this type of Bullshit .. can you find even one bad word about him here? It doesn’t matter what happens they could literally suck him off like and you’d find something to say . Like oh you do t get it like I do but you dont even understand.
This isn't a road course , it's a street race.
Drivers should be hiding their heads in sham. Talk about a butt spanking.
@@greggkiest1069no they shouldn't,he's a specialist street racer, they had no chance from the start,if he hadn't been pushed to 18th he would've been a half track ahead of second......
As a Kiwi that has lived in Oz for nearly 40 years, I have barely watched NASCAR, but I got up at 5.30am to watch this race and loved it especially in the wet which in Supercars we do see. In Supercars I don’t even support the Giz or even his make of car, but this was one race I looked forward to watch since it was announced, I thought he would do well. Congrats to NASCAR for putting on the best event I have seen this year and probably for the last couple of years!
Be cool to see nascar take on bathurst

100% agree. I haven't watched a NASCAR race in years, but this got me up early to watch as well.. What a great race!

I'm a black man who was born & raised on the Southside of chicago. I'm up at midnight looking at a Nascar podcast & I haven't even seen a full race before. The event did its job!!!! I'm subscribed!
SVG has also raced rally-cross and IMSA in left side cars. He was in the sister car on Kyle Busch's team for the Daytona 24, and Kyle said SVG consistently put in the fastest lap times across all 6 drivers in the 2 cars. He's just a mega talent.
He’s also done sprint car racing and WRC2 and Le Mans and Porsche Cup racing, he’s won the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup and won various GT3 and GT4 endurance races and even had some open wheel race car wins.
He has so much experience in all sorts of machinery. He’s just fast.

I don’t think too many people in North America fully understand how accomplished of a driver SVG is. He has 80 wins and 174 podiums in 499 career Supercars races, and is a 3x champion, and has won the Bathurst 1000 two times. He has wins in Blancpain GT3 at Silverstone, Nurburgring GP, Monza, and Paul Richard, and won the 2016 Blancpain GT3 Endurance Championship. He’s done the Bathurst 12 Hour nine times, taking the overall win in 2016 in a McLaren GT3. He’s done the Daytona 24 Hour five times, with a best finish of 2nd in class. He’s also done the Sebring 12 Hour, the Spa 24 Hour, and the Le Mans 24 Hour, all in GT cars. In 2022, he drove in his first rally event, WRC Rally New Zealand. He drove a Skoda in the WRC-2 category, and finished 3rd in class. Early on in his Supercars career, SVG used to enter professional drifting events in New Zealand and Australia, often driving a big Holden Commodore. He used to do quite well, and was usually one of the favourites.
The guy has more seat time in a race car than most drivers. He’ll race anything, and he is extremely adaptable. Furthermore, any regular Supercars fan will know that SVG is known in particular for his skill on street courses, AND, known for his insane skill in wet and mixed conditions. Put him on a wet street course, and he’s usually on another level.
So the NASCAR guys had the deck pretty stacked against them - new circuit, first ever street race, relatively new to rain, and still learning the Gen 7 car - and Shane was probably the one driver in the world most equipped to take advantage of that situation. Not to take anything away from what SVG did, because it was incredible, just trying to point out the NASCAR guys don’t really have anything to be ashamed of.
The whole race was a win for NASCAR, and having someone like SVG race with the Cup drivers will only make Cup drivers better and more complete drivers in the long run.
Scott McLaughlin, who raced against SVG a lot managed to finish 2nd at Texas in his first ever oval race (and I believe 2nd or 3rd start) . These super car guys are pretty good .
This doesn't tarnish cup drivers. It was good for NASCAR.
Scott Mclaughlin was the only driver to beat Shane in Championship in the past 6 or 7 years
@@troyerrington7890and Jamie Wincup but he retired from full time
Two New Zealanders joining Scott Dixon over in the US. Love it.
@allancaples4887 I agree .. I love it when our drivers from Aus/Nz have a crack and succeed,. People from other countries forget sometimes that Nz / Aus have and will produce top tallant
For the next street/road race,
Trackhouse wildcard: SVG
Penske wildcard: Scott McLaughlin
Andretti wildcard: Chaz Mostert
Now that would be entertaining!
In Australia, the Gold Coast round once had a race with an international driver pairing with the full time driver of the car in an endurance race. Maybe Nascar and Supercars could make a race like this again.. A round in the US with Nascars, and a round in Aus with Supercars.. Would be a complete throw down🏆
They should make it where NASCAR does not run on Bathurst weekend so cup drivers can go
Issue was this was always during NASCAR’s Talladega fall weekend and the event is still in that same time period when it’s the middle of the championship run in NASCAR. Hard to get NASCAR drivers in anything else purely because they go from February to mid November with only one weekend off.
Kiwi here tuning in... I never ever watch NASCAR because it's not on my radar but I had this race playing live while I was working and loved every second of it, and now I'm here listening to your podcast because of it. We DO NOT think that you guys stink after that result. We understand that you guys are all world class. SVG is a freak and he's fast in anything he drives and he's proven that in Supercars, Rally, Sprint cars, open wheel formulas, you name it. He was a total cat amongst the pigeons in this race and it was no coincidence that the style of race suited him to a tee and it's awesome that it's got the WORLD of motorsport talking about it!
Havent watched a race in 15 years. Im now watching podcasts about nascar. Im a kiwi in Aus, love to see him move to Nascar and compete. he drives rally, sprint cars, open wheelers, GT cars, 12 hr and 24 hr races, spa, daytona, la manns. This side of the world we know him as a driving machine, he always aces every car he drives.
Disrespectful that the little cohost couldn’t sort out the man’s name prior to the show. Lack of professionalism.
Except it seems Denny was very unsure about whether or not he'd say it correctly as well.
Someone should get a you a tissue
What does it matter? Do you get upset when everyone, including his teammates, refers to him as SVG?
It all adds to SVG story in Nascar. Didnt know his name before but they know it now..
I dont understand how people have such a hard time with this. It’s literally one fucking word. Shane vangisbergen. Shane van-gis-bergen. Its fucking embarrassing 😂
He was closer to the wall... while sitting on the wrong side of the car.
He came to your world more than you came to his. You have to adjust to walls and bumps. He has to adjust to side of the car, shifting with the other hand, brakes, tires, power delivery, spotters, pit stops, restarts...
Spot on. I don’t think people realise how much he had to do to get that win. It was phenomenal. ❤
So what’s your point???
We all real race fans knew he had a real chance to win, succeed. No surprise, I loved it, so what’s your text about ??

Americans need to remember who the 8th President was. Van Buren
You guys are correct. What he did is phenomenal, and yes it is good for NASCAR coz all of Australia and New Zealand watched that race. I can only speak for myself but I’d say most people don’t look down on the NASCAR drivers after that race.
Absolutely.
The reason the win is so amazing isn't because other drivers sucked, it's because other drivers were very, very good. It's just that on the day, SVG was clean when he had to be clean and made moves when he had to make moves. He had brilliant judgement and control of the car.
Kiwi here. Its been so cool watching the reactions of Americans to SVG. Super respectful. That race was so much fun to watch. The thing that really stood out to me was not Shanes speed but his race craft. He really had a lot more tools to use on a street curcuit. It was great for NASCAR, and its brought a lot of new eyes to the sport. It doesnt take anything away from the drivers, give them more experience on street courses and I dont think that would have happened like it did. Its so cool to see a bit of cross over and it would be cool to see American drivers getting some seat time in a V8 super car, or even bring the super cars over for an event. That was awesome.
One of the travesties of the race is it not being broadcast in NZ.
What’s the vibe out there?
The Gis is a weapon. He’s a step above all other drivers in Supercars and his race craft is next level.
He won’t say you guys suck, that’s not in his DNA.
It was great for your sport, it was the first Nascar race I’ve watched, plus I’ve watched a few new podcasts as well.

I am a 64-year-old racing fan from Glasgow Scotland, two wheels my favourite but for decades have been watching NASCAR, INDYCAR Series, AMA bike racing. For me, the USA racing scene is so wide. NHRA, IRDA. You have it all and really know how to put a show on. Fantastic tracks. Elkhart Lake, Pocono, Road Atlanta, Talladega, Laguna Seca, Daytona, Cota, Indianapolis what places to perform. About Shane Van Gisbergen. Seven years ago, Speedweek from Australia said this "Is Shane Van Gisbergen from another Planet? " Even the race hardened Aussie fans, drivers and media found it mesmerising. So, take nothing away from the USA's supremely talented and audacious drivers it's just that every now again unfathomable talent appears. Just be glad you were part of it. Thanks to all involved.
May I introduce you to dirt oval racing here in central Pennsylvania on the states were I live it’s huge here
This Chicago street race circuit is extremely basic with minimal technical corners so in saying that this would be relatively easy for most Supercar drivers from Australia. SVG is one of the best in the world and that alone would be hard for an oval race car driver to even fathom let alone compete with.
@@nightrun17vr2323 Thanks for the heads-up. I regularly watch the dirt oval racing. For the life of me I wonder at the drivers transition from a damp half mile dirt oval to a two-mile superspeedway. As a Kiwi and a motor sport fan and supporter of SVG, he races everything from rally cars, sprint cars, Drift and the list goes on, his one out of the box. Did we think he would win? Maybe? would of bin happy with a top 10.Down under we love NASCAR, and we know that the cup driver are the best in the world and the best tin top racing, SVG showed what is possible on a street circuit and I'm sure next SVG comes to play you boys will be better and will know what to expect and counter it, Looking for to that. I'm a big fan of you Denny and of Dale Jr and love the show. Racing is the big winner. Thanks
As an American who loves V8 Supercars, I expected a top 10 for sure. Did I think he could win? Yes. Did I think he was going to win. No. I'm by no means a SVG fan but his talent is undeniable. I agree that this is great for motorsports all around the world.
AU/NZ fan here It was the first cup race I’ve watched in full for last 5 years. It’s a good thing for the sport, the racing product was great.
SVG is a generational talent he’s been racing in top level Supercars since he was 18 (2007) there’s nothing to be tarnished in losing to him.
I feel lucky to have watched one of the best drivers in the world put on an incredible show. It's Tuesday and I still can't believe he won. I really hope he runs more NASCAR races
SVG is like the Lewis Hamilton of V8 Supercars. Truly. He's used to the big stage. He's been winning for years and has done it on road courses, street courses, etc. He's one of those guys who just has an incredible instinct for the sport. He seems to see things open up before they do. He is just ridiculous and I can't wait to see him come back. At the end of the day what a great thing for NASCAR. Ozz and NZ have insane rabid fans for motorsports. They love their racing. They love their drivers. They are just incredibly dedicated to the sport much like we are with NASCAR and probably a bit beyond. What an amazing opportunity to grow the brand and the sport in front of millions of fans from down under. Great weekend.
The perfect comment. 👍
Jamie Whincup is the Lewis Hamilton of V8 Supercars. It’s like people keep forgetting he was basically gifted the title after Scott McLaughlin left for Indycar.
Nah Gissy is the Verstappen of Supercar
@@toyotaecw McLaughlin wasn't winning 2021 without Penske. He left at the perfect time
Glad you brought up road courses, old mate seems to think.he only races on street tracks. He give a shake up on them too
The more I learn about SVG, the more I'm convinced he's just a generational talent, and after this win, he should be in consideration for best driver in the world. This man doesn't just have that dog in him, he is the dog
"JUST a generational talent"?? interesting choice of words mate.
I dont think the JUST was a negative connotation but like "just a beast" is a pure recognition of how it "just is"
I'm an American who doesn't pay any more than average for cable tv... so I don't get to see much Aussie V8 racing these days. But what I have seen shows VanGisbergen's talent. He's smooth and tough as nails under pressure. One doesn't win Bathhurst three times nor win three Championships in his series... Shane's win in Chicago was one of the best results I've ever seen. Really rooting for him.
Maybe Shane wouldn't be quite as competitive on most of the ovals (without a saavy crewchief), but he'd rock road courses (of course with a good car as was had in Chicago). Anyway, really happy to see SVG do really, really well here.
Just want to say, as a Kiwi, we don’t think you guys suck.
I really enjoyed the race, looking forward to watching more.
Maybe some Nascar drivers could do a wildcard entry in supercars, that would be amazing.
Would be pointless .. they can't do well in their own car on a road street course how they going have chance in a different car on a harder track c'mon man they dunno how even use a clutch lol.
Agreed, it’s not in our nature, as Kiwis, to rag on the competition.
I think we were just stoked that Shane turned up and represented NZ (and to an extent, Australia) and showed another group of Motorsport fans what we down here have known for a long time…he’s pretty good making four wheels go round a track/course fairly quickly!
Supercars wont give out a licence to an international as they then lose control of the series to FIA as its under FIA rules but controlled by CAMS currently .
Nascar drivers are beasts. Oval is a different ball game. I'm kiwi and know for a fact nascar drivers are world class. We just happy to watch a local guy do well there because we know how hard it is. But it was also very very cool to watch. Thanks nascar.
It's the media who blow it up and say he made nascar drivers look bad. In no way do kiwis or Aussies think that way ever. We just happy and supportive of our drivers.
We're really proud of SVG here in New Zealand, but we all know that your drivers are novices on streets at this point and SVG is a champion on streets, not to mention the wet. SVG also did extremely well racing WRC rally so he's talented. Going to be a lot of new eyes from Australia and NZ on NASCAR from here onwards.
Didn't know about his WRC. World Rally has some of the best drivers in the world!!
You guys should see how SVG won the NZ Gran Prix in 2021. He started the race from the pit lane 😂
if anything NASCAR drivers should be proud to be able to be close to someone with years of street experience and still be close. Larson passed SVG a few times, as did Bell.
That was one of the really cool things about the track, they couldn't really block or shunt to risk ending up in the wall themselves on such a tight course so we got to see some nice clean passing
The moment when Denny realises why Australians and Kiwi's are the best drivers in the world........ In any case while Nascar goes back to ovals this week, Shane is doing another street track this weekend in Townsville. Guys there is an oval here in Australia at Calder Park which if you commited to racing there could be brought back up to standard and we could have a Nascar / Supercar shared round......
The Calder Park Oval section is munted and is said to be beyond repair. Without being totally rebuilt from the ground up
Indeed there actually was a NASCAR oval race here at Calder Park with mixed Aussie/USA grid back in 1988. Look up 1988 Goodyear NASCAR 500.
The Australian NASCAR series was licenced to Bob Jane, the owner of Calder Park by the USA NASCAR sanctioning body and President Bill France Jr,
Calder Park Thunderdome is rotting away, not as bad as North Wilkesboro got to & they resurrected that.
The word is that the banking at Calder Park would need to be redevelopment and North Wilkesboro has no banking on the same scale as Calder Park in degrees
Greetings from Oz. All the top Cup drivers are awesome. SVG is a champion in his own series and is undoubtedly a great driver. His win doesn’t tarnish the quality of the Cup drivers. Hopefully, the cross-over promotes both series and the cross-pollination of drivers will continue. I'd love to see Cup drivers come and race Bathurst! Undoubtedly, they would be super competitive.
Hahaha u gotta be kidding .. maybe if they ran super cars on an oval until they found out the super cars get destroyed with the smallest amount of contact. Nascars can take serious hits and continue
My brother and I have been talking for years about the organisers need to slot in wildcard entries for talent across the Motorsport world. Our premier race has a dismal 28 car field on a track that's 6.2k long. Imagine a field of 45 odd cars with a smattering of wildcard entries chasing a massive pay check for a win.
I reckon now, courtesy of SVG this isn't such a pipe dream.
Barring lack of Gen 3 cars and calendar clashes though.
Gizzy has a pretty extensive resume.. speedcar dirt oval racing, open wheelers in a formula ford, world rally championship in a skoda, V8 supercars champion, 24 hour of Le Mans in a Ferrari 488, a few seasons of D1 drift, he’s done your 24 hour Daytona 5 times already, and he can handle a motocross bike like a pro.
He’s exceptionally talented he just showed the Nascar world that there are plenty of good drivers out there 🤔🤔🤔🇨🇦🇨🇦👍
He is an unreal talent.. i dont think another supercars driver could do what he did with as little prep as he had.. with his current experience.. i think he could be a contender for a win at watkins or Sonoma.
You might find Brodie K and Cam Waters would pick it up quickly also. Shane , Brodie, and Cam have and will continue to Race winged 410 Sprintcars
100% those boys could do well.. I just don't think as quickly.. His home prep (sim) - 2 hours at royal / nascar simulator / chicago race weekend - his patience and not fighting during race (learning and testing) waiting for the right moment to pounce.. top 20 in supercars with enough practice and prep would have turned heads.. Fast in a V8SC - yer gonna be fast anywhere with prep.
Scotty Mac would probably do the same I think. SVG and scotty were so skilled.
Brockie would have but still agree
@@cowboyvaderLook how fast Scott picked up racing an open wheeled car.
Never cared much for Nascar.
The race was actually exciting with good passing and scrappy battles for position. I was on the edge of my seat. Its the kind of racing that any fan of motorsport would enjoy, because its about the skill, the pressure, the danger and all that goes along with racing at the highest level. Well done nascar for trying something different. Well done SVG for driving hard. Well done Chicago for hosting a great race. Ill definitely tune-in to catch more if its anything like this in the future.
He won it because of his footwork. Heel and toeing it to keep the car stable on the downshifts. Everyone else was getting out of shape on the brakes when they pushed it as deep as SVG.
Australian here. If I assume correctly, road courses are like Watkins Glen, what we would call just a race track, then Shane would've been a weapon, also. Same or very similar result.
The true test would be on an oval but don't discount SVG. While our drivers would get a pit lane penalty for 90% of the shoving your guys do, Van Gisbergen would shove back.
And Shane isn't "unknown", you guys weren't just paying attention.
Shane also drove a lh drive rally car in last year's Australian Rally Championship so he was a little familiar with the shifting.
Can I say that, while we're separate countries, Australia and New Zealand are very close geopolitical, ideologically, and socially. Australians look on New Zealand and New Zealanders as their much loved but annoying younger brother/cousin, you know, the one who's a few years younger and always hanging around. (NZers - kiwi's -, of course, have a different view. It's OK for them to be wrong, though.)
With our immigration policies, Australians and Kiwis have free travel and lax residency requirements, with very little restrictions on working and holidaying between the two nations.
A LOT of Supercar (and legacy series) drivers hail from NZ and compete in the highest levels of our motorsport. Not just supercars, but our domestic rally series, and drag racing, as well.
We can argue all day about the advantages SVG had over the disadvantages in the race, but remember, it was only a week ago that this guy walked into a 2 car/crew team, borrowed a few mechanics, and tweaked their work experience car that he had never seen before into a race winner.
This is the first Nascar race I watched since Marcus Ambrose left . It has received so much media coverage here on every channel . Enjoyed by many and no disrespect for any driver in the Nascar Cup Series. Shane's driving abilities are outstanding so much that he has won everything here in Australia and needs a new challenge. His driving techniques are not new here and are required to get the best front these cars to get better exit speed and tyre management . Heel toe driving is what gave Marcus the advantage at Watkins Glen much like what he was used too. Oval driving is where you would find the biggest difference in speed techniques and car setup would be the biggest difference. Thanks for a great race to watch.
SVG winning is not bad for NASCAR, from a fan perspective it's positive because it brought huge attention to the series from people in NZ and Australia who may not have otherwise tuned in. Certainly don't think he would be telling anyone that other Cup drivers suck either, he showed respect for other drivers and he's fully aware that it would take time to learn ovals and said as much in his interviews. There are rumblings that he could be in NASCAR as soon as 2024, and I hope there is substance to that because he's achieved everything he can in Supercars and in my opinion, he deserves the opportunity in the States.
I love it personally, I always pulled for the ringers alongside my driver back in the day. Would love to see what he could do for a season.
What's a ringer?
SVG also brought his race engineer with him. Serious approach to that race.
SVG did say that if the race had been on an oval circuit, the result would have been different. Scott McLaughlin , now driving for Penske, was the only driver downunder, who regularly matched Shane. The race itself was very entertaining, and congratulations to NASCAR for having the courage to put it on.
Chas mostert Jamie Whincup & koseke who’s leading championship can all run with SVG Chas Mostert also debuted at SPA 24hr GT3 the biggest GT in the world last weekend and he also won Scott Mcglauchlan is kicking ass in the Indycar series the new Gen3 Fords are slower than the GMs giving SVG a big advantage until they can find the disparity! Gis has a long way to go before he matches Craig Lowndes & Peter Brocks records
i was one of those people who belived that chicago was gonna be a total flop, but now this is probably one of my top 5 fave times being proven wrong. i would love to see SVG come race for trackhouse in 2025 if they can make a 3rd charter work out
Kiwi here... and as a New Zealander and someone that follows Supercars and every motorsport there is including Indy, Dirt, MotoGP, WRC and NASCAR as much as I can once you realise the differences SVG had to go through then you are only just starting to grasp how amazing what he did was. From driving in a different car, steering and gear shift on different side he's used to, pedals weren't exactly where he wanted, he isn't used to looking right into his rear view mirror because usually he looks to his left plus in a supercar he has side mirrors on both sides of the car on both doors to see cars on either side plus, we use those side mirrors as feelers to judge how far away from the wall and other cars we are and that's for starters I could mention more there's a little bit more like the seat to where his head was because in Supercars you have more head room for visibility and movement reasons not to mention aerodynamics are total opposites to what he's trained for most of his life and then that brings in instinct, sheesh....I could go on and on
Hey guys. Really enjoyed this. As a kiwi I was always going to tune in and watch knowing how skilled Shane is. Now, granted nascar races don’t resemble what we saw on the weekend but I was really impressed with the cars, drivers and crowds. I for one am now a fan of the sport and look forward to watching the rest of the season and learning the ins and outs of the sport. Oh and I definitely don’t look at the nascar drivers as rubbish or anything like that. You guys have skills. Much love from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Nice to see a race decided without wrecking someone.
SVG simply put is a guy who will make records every he goes im Australian and have been watching Supercars my whole life , we have famous drivers for a particular trait or particular track for eg Peter Brock and Bathurst, SVG is going to become historic this is the beginning he can compete in any car any category, something Americans don’t realise our Supercars have changed for the 2023 season and are very different to previous seasons and he still kicks ass
As an Aussie. I still watch your races time to time and definitely don't think svg winning tarnashes what you guys do. The bloke can drive. And his ability to be able to drive anything he touches at such a high standard is insane. He's not a 3time supercar champion for nothing and over those years he dominated that series aswell. He is best of the best. And this was the best track to race him at that he had a chance of winning. And by the sounds of it, it won't be the last time you hear from him, :) he will be back. And isn't afraid of rubbing doors. It's all over the news here so I'd say it's definitely a plus on having him. To all the Aussies and nz people that haven't watched a nascar race till now. You should. What they do on an oval or road course is crazy. Will be good to see svg running on those in the future.
🥝🥝🥝 here. First time watching Nascar and loved ot. The wet track made it even more exciting. Got to say, it's the first time seeing SVG being so polite, for he is an aggressive driver, he'll get passed you no problem and play tag with ya. I watch alot of races, Bathhurst, supercars, Indycar, because of SVG and Scotty Mac, also Scott Dickson and a new boy, Marcus Armstrong, 22yrs from NZ. Doing very well in Indycars. BTW, Shane wouldn't put your drivers down and say they suck, they were awesome. Like SVG said in an interview, put me out on an oval, it would be a totally different story. Big fan here, will be adding Nascar to my list. Well done Nascar 👏
Some background; the race was due to start around 8am Monday, Melbourne (Australia) time, and run for about 2.5-3 hours. There were a number of fans who went to the race from Australia and NZ and some even got a pic on the podium post-race with SVG! And I have spoken to a number of people who have said that they will go to the race next year.
As a Kiwi I love my motorsport in general. NASCAR has always been special and I have my favourite drivers and teams.
In no way has SVG's win tarnished the drivers or NASCAR itself. I think if anything it has brought a whole lot of fans back to NASCAR. If Shane comes on full-time in the near future, you will have a massive increase in your fan base.
Edit: I posted my comment 5 minutes into the video. Good to see my point was picked up. ---------- Aussie here. The craziest part for me is switching from the right side to the left and shifting with the other hand. When i first drove on a public road in the US, it took a day or so to get used to that. Your mind is programed as to where you should be in relation to centre lines, other cars and it takes a while to adjust. Doing that at 120+ mph is just amazing. The US drivers reaction to SVG was great, hopefully we see more street races in Nascars and more Aussies/Kiwis.
Yes, he was shifting with the other hand on the other side of the car. Also, big difference on how the aero works with over vs under the car. Also, locked vs open diff as well. SVG is really good. All the V8SC drivers are really good.
I'm looking forward to seeing Shane ' doing the same to the field on the road courses and ovals in 2025 he could actually win the cup series in his first full year ' he's also one of the most aggressive drivers around so he won't be intimidated by anyone and will be happy to give as much as he gets 😀
Fitting that him and Ross Chastain are NASCAR teammates lol
If youre a NASCAR fan and enjoyed the Chicago race get around supercars. They were one of the series that were also racing in Melbourne during the Formula 1 weekend and they were one of the highlights of the weekend. Full send banging mirrors.
Australian NASCAR fan- I have a streaming service just for that so Ive seen a lot of races . I loved Chicago - so professional on NASCAR and the drivers part. Chicago looked amazing . I think we just think differently . Just because someone came in and won on a new course doesn't have us thinking the rest of NASCAR drivers are average. We know ovals are different and Superspeedways are different again . We watched Marcus Ambrose battle for a long time before he won- admittedly the cars he came from compared to Stock Cars of the day were miles apart but we saw how different superspeedways were. We had our own at one stage that ran from 1988 to the mid 2000 's the Calder Park Thunderdome and the US drivers like Neil Bonnet , Bobby Allison and Morgan Shepherd etc would come out and show us how its done . We know Shane is possibly a generational talent and we know lots of things favoured him - but there was lots that didnt . I think this was great for NASCAR and it was great for Shane .
Most NASCAR fans probably don't know just how diverse Shane's racing experience is. He has raced, and won, in...
✅ Motocross; Midgets; Go-karts; Drifting.
✅ Open-wheelers (Formula First; Formula Ford; Toyota Racing Series).
✅ NZ Supertourers; Aussie V8 Supercars.
✅ Sports/GT; IMSA SportsCar Championship.
✅ Endurance Racing (Sebring 12 Hour; Daytona 24 Hour; Bathurst 1000; Bathurst 6 & 12 Hour; Spa 24 Hour; Le Mans 24 Hour; Blancpain Endurance Series).
✅ WRC Rally NZ.
✅ and now NASCAR.
Shane's a bloody legend.
The world needs to realise AUS/NZ has a very rich motorsport history
The average Aussie male has gone sideways by age 11, bought a 200hp Commodore at 16 and it's putting out 900hp by age 18-20
It's so weird how superior NZ is per capita and EVEN overall to Australia at 4 wheeled motorsport driver production recently but how Aus has the 3 F1 drivers recently.
If you only include active drivers that made an impact globally NZ has Dixon, SVG, McLaughlin, Mitch Evans, Cassidy, Lawson, Hartley, Bamber, Paddon where Australia only has Piastri, Ricciardo, Power, Briscoe
Well said guys.
Chicago turned out to be a fantastic event, and I for one was pretty impressed to see nascar, with wet tires on, jokes aside, i thought with the rain they would cancel it, and props to them for (i didn't know until the event they even had wet spec tires) running it in those conditions. Drivers did well, and overall, event should be looked at as a success.
....and SVG doing SVG things :-)
SVG is awesome. Watched him win Bathurst 12hr in McLaren 650s, the 6 hr in a BMW M4, plus the two 1000 wins in supercars.
He also won all 3 supercar races at Sandown in 2021 with a broken collarbone and 3 broken ribs.
As a kiwi watching pretty much my 1st full race I really enjoyed it cars sounds sick as. Nah makes the sport better bring more viewers etc. Well done shane.
The thing that no one has talked about (that I'm aware of) is his race craft. SVG regularly runs a smart strategy in Supercars where all of a sudden in late race he has good pace. I thought he was doing this in Chicago and would love to hear his response to this.
It wouldn't take long for the other NASCAR drivers to get their race craft and strategies better. Would make a massive difference
Marcos never had top equipment. The Nexgen car makes it more likely that a new team can compete on an equal basis. Go SVG!
As a long time Nascar fan, (65yrs) welcome aboard Shane. You're a blast to watch and listen to.
Nascar need to take up and coming driver's to other countries to learn from drivers in similar cars to what they drive in the series. I was also wondering if Denny Hamlin or any other older Nascar drivers ever thought about or wanted to race at Bathurst?
SVG is just as good on road course if not better ... He'll be a handful on anything other than an Oval ... Won't take him long to get his head around Ovals ... Trust me he's just as good in a Sprint Car ... WRC rally car ... Moto cross bike ... One of the best drivers on the Planet as you all have just seen 🇳🇿
I loved it. I remember growing up they would always bring in guys like Borris Said for the road courses and they never really dominated anything. To see this guy with what seems to be a great attitude come over and find success is fantastic. What I want to see now is Larson to get this guy into a sprint car or a late model for a few races if for no other reason than to see Shanes reaction to that kinda racing
Larson has already raced against Shane in Sprint Cars back in New Zealand.
As an Aussie I’m not bagging out regular NASCAR drivers. SVG is a very special driver and was always going to be impressive. Marcos Ambrose virtually owned Watkins Glen for awhile but that didn’t take away from the US drivers but helped draw us Aussies into NASCAR.
I am an Aussie that has followed the various U.S. series (NASCAR, Indy Car, Sprintcars, Midgets etc.) since I was a kid. I managed to get A.J. Foyt's and Mel Canyon's autographs at Liverpool Speedway here in Aussie back in the day when those two gentlemen toured to compete in Midgets on 1/4 mile dirt. I grew up with speed and once old enough, was pit crew for my old man on speedway.
Nothing Gissy did in Chicago diminishes the skill of the NASCAR field. Gissy is a bit of a freak who will race tin tops on bitumen one day and be throwing a rally car through a forest leg the next day without slowing down. I think the fact that NASCAR now has a street circuit brings a new level of excitement to an already great format and Gissy brought a lot of Aussies and Kiwis to support NASCAR that are young and passionate.
NASCAR wins...your field of drivers, including you Denny, are considered the pinnacle of tin top racing for us old speedway die hards and the field showed their class on an unfamiliar track with no data that they could set up from, no driver experience they could use and they raced a bloody good race.
Well done to all involved and no shame at all from my POV.
This does not diminish NASCAR at all!!! It makes it more inclusive and exciting in many ways LOVE NASCAR love from Australia
With what Scotty Mac has done in Indycar, and knowing the background of accomplishment in a road racing series, it shouldn't really be as big of a shock as it has been to some. It doesn't help that the media always makes everything into a bigger deal than it is. There's a lot of prisoners of the moment.
It's just that no matter the talent, no road course ringer has won in 50 years and no first time driver in an official race for like 70 years. There have been some great road course ringers on paper, and great first time drivers in good cars, but the fact BOTH of them hadn't been done for so long meant it was microscopic in theory. Personally I am a Kiwi who watches both and I was just hoping for a top 10 after qualifying. I didn't believe this could happen. Even in the race I was hoping for top 5 up until he got put 18th, then I thought top 10
@@dxfifa I agree. I thought he could grab a top 10, but also thought that of the right situation found him that anything could happen. That's pretty much what took place. After the race was shortened, everything fell just right and he took advantage. That's what the top drivers do. It was pretty cool to see. Ultimately, I wasn't surprised when he won. It is his bread and butter after all.
"He didn't come to our world. We came to his." I like it.
We Australians and New Zealand's can adapt to any car that's given to us to race, Well Done SVG you made all Kiwi's proud 👍
I have followed Nascar for over 30yrs and this had to be one of the best races I have ever seen...I hope they have a street race every year...Way to go Nascar.
Some of those guys need to have a few races in Super cars to hone their skills on the street even although they would be driving on the other side of the car. Experiencing other class drivers from around the world and disciplines surely makes you a better driver. Racing cars does not start and end in the States. It's a big world out there with a a lot of quality drivers and racing series.
Great comments from Denny. Cup drivers had to learn a track and how to street race. SVG had to learn a track and the car. Overall the event was mega - and while I enjoy NASCAR as a whole, I hope they add a few more Street & Road Course races into the mix. The single file restarts kept the carnage to a minimum and I think that needs to be considered on all of the Road course races.
To me the coolest thing was to see SVG’s personality. What a happy and great guy who has energy that is contagious- unlike many of the cup drivers ie chase Elliot- no personally and Hamlin- complainer
Shane definitely has fire when things aren't going his way
As a race fan of all racing there are stars in each. To be fair the shortened race took out the best cars to race him too. If Larson and reddick were still up front be fun to see them race for it
Giz had an early pitstop aswell that's why he slipped back to 18th place
I think Denny has it spot on. Im so proud of Shane, but he did get the very best of what he could have hoped for re: street circuit. Ain't nobody in the world better.
Shane races anything on wheels left or right hand drive, midgets and winged Sprint cars. I don't think he would have won on an oval but if he does go over there, don't expect him to take long to be very competitive. Love the honesty of this show. What Shane did took nothing from the Cup drivers.
He is the best driver in V8 Supercars in Australia. He felt comfortable in that environment, and he showed his skill. Put him on an oval and things would be a bit different. Not taking anything away from what he achieved, and it would take him a season to learn the ropes on oval tracks. After a year he would be pushing you guys too. He is a smart talented driver who learns fast.
Hopefully he will be there in 2026 racing you guys full time.
If Scott Mclaughlin can come 2nd to Scott dixon at Fort Worth Texas Oval in his 1st or 2nd race in 2021, anything possible, SVG will work it out, if he makes the switch to Nascar.
SVG has one year on contract in the Super V8's 2023.
Its great for Nascar. You guys have got a lot more eyeballs on you now from this part of the world. 🇳🇿🥝
It doesn't matter what the category is Shane will do well given the right equipment. He lives and breathes racing and when he's not racing he's teaching racing to newcomers. He even dominated in Oval racing in iRacing during the pandemic (against his peers). NASCAR shouldn't feel embarrassed or ashamed. They were beaten by the best in what could only be "A perfect Storm". He is likely to be the GOAT in whatever series he chooses to race in FULL TIME.
He dabbles in many different forms of motorsport because he really enjoys racing.
That alone make him hard to beat. Anyone truly dedicated to their craft will always be hard to beat.
Enjoy the fact you got to race against a TRUE professional.
He enjoyed the experience and no one really believed he WOULD win but happy that he did.
He would be similar to Kyle Larson in flexibility and commitment to various disciplines.
On top of all that, he's a nice guy. Just not for the cameras.
Oh, I am an Aussie that really enjoys NASCAR and watch it every week (all 3 tiers). I prefer it to V8 Supercars especially the commentary and coverage and strategy.
As a kiwi, we understand the challenges of NASCAR. SVG is a professional and absorbed all the info, not every driver could have done what he did. If NASCAR mixes the races up from ovals, circuits and street races it will be a more compelling sport. Well done NASCAR reimagine your sport and your international audience will increase.
Only Nascar race I've watched this year. Great race, SVG is a very talented and astute driver.
Shane van Jensonbutton
I’m from Australia, now I’m a nascar fan. I’d never watched it before SVG went over. It stings but he cleaned you fellas up. Yes the street circuit is his bread and butter but the car are very very different.
The concept worked for growing fan base. Lick the wounds and get better for next time. SVG will be arriving soon 😎
Shanes' win doesn't tarnish your drivers ability. Give him credit for his driving ability that matches your drivers. He is a world class driver.
Supercars should bring over a Nascar driver for a one off race in Australia now.
Well, that's hard because NASCAR is on every week. SVG came to the States, raced and missed nothing. If a cup guy went to Australia he'd probably be missing a race. Of course it would be interesting to see a NASCAR driver in V8 Supercars, maybe as a second driver in the Bathurst 1000. But someone like Reddick, Truex Jr, Elliott, Larson etc. Someone who's going to be good in a road cource.
Single-file restarts was an amazing decision. I'm so glad they kept it that way even once the track dried out. I'd be happy to see all the road/street courses start single-file all the time. Keep double-wide with the choose rule for intermediates, superspeedways, and short tracks.
nascar always had single file restarts until they started messing with all the rules.
@@Schmitz3 Yup, the sanctionong body meddling with the rules is the oldest tradition in all of NASCAR! They also used to have lapped cars line up on the inside row up front, never made much sense.
As a kiwi I'd like to commend you on your humility Denny
It reminds of a comment when Jimmy Johnson was in an all star race.
"that 48 is bad fast"
I live in New Zealand, and I love super cars. I watch it religiously. When It was advertised that Gizzy(SVG) was going to race in Nascar, I couldn't wait to watch the race. I tell you what, I absolutely loved it! The coverage was amazing. The drivers were amazing on and off the track and they really make the sport. The cars sound amazing. (I wish that supercars sounded like that, don't get me wrong. Supercars sound amazing, but the tone that Nascar cars make is sooo good )
Personally, if our broadcast provider starts broadcasting Nascar I will be watching just as religiously as I do supercars.
As a lifelong NASCAR fan, I could not help but think how this professional driver from a different circuit in Austria just made Justin Haley look silly the way he passed him with ease at the end of the race. This was NASCAR’S equivalency to broken ankles in the NBA.
Austria?
Australia 😄
As a New Zealander myself, i think this is the best analysis ive heard on this race
As an Australian I can’t believe that Elliott guy saying Gizzy will go back to Australia saying NASCAR drivers suck. That’s not him. It’s not how most Aussies and Kiwis think. Big ups to all the NASCAR drivers doing an inaugural street race on a new Uber urban setting in torrential rain conditions. You’ve now got fans of Gizzy from Australia, New Zealand and European fans who’ve seen him drive there and are now tuning into NASCAR for the first time. You’re going global. How is that bad for NASCAR?! You’ve just got to remember that Gizzy won arguably the most intimidating, hardest street circuit in the world twice- The Bathurst 1000 6 hour endurance in 2020 and 2022. If you’ve never watched Bathurst and watched the drivers tackle Mount Panorama, you haven’t seen the most scary, exciting and craziest insane driving ever. Do yourselves a favour and check it out. Then you’ll be able to wrap your heads around Gizzy’s debut win. Aussies and Kiwi motorsports drivers are crazy at challenging themselves on insane courses and circuits. Gizzy’s pretty much driven everything including marathon, rally, dirt, drifting. In other words he’s massively adaptable and versatile. He’s also a precision weapon driver behind the wheel. Give your guys a year to get used to the next Gen car (based on V8 Supercars in Australia) and you’ll be whooping our arses. We’ll done Chicago and NASCAR for taking the leap. It paid off big time. Cheers
I think you're right, Nascar wanted to play in SVG's sandbox. He just showed you where the bar is. It's not bad for the sport, it just means that it needs to level up. It's going to be a fun time for Nascar.
In this instance I agree with the statement that they came to Shane’s world more than he came to theirs, however, the additional difficulty of driving on the opposite side of the car, a new country and processes only highlight how amazing a driver Shane is. Believe me when I say, every question and doubt you raise in this discussion we, in Australia, asked when Shane came here from New Zealand and started to kick ass. He’s just very good.
G'day from OZ, well what an amazing week in Chicago. What the result has done it has allowed a real connection between the Australian, New Zealand and the USA. Previously we have had limited connection except via Marcus Ambrose which at the time of him being successful gave the same type of emotions. Racing fans crave for connectivity with drivers and the sport. Being able to see dialogue from other Nascar drivers to our countries via Shane Van Gisbergen brings that connectivity. The sincere assessments from the Nascar drivers of SVG can only open up the doors even further for more fans in our part of the world to embrace your sport and allow future following of Nascar races. I am sure that with SVG participating in the Chicago race it would have greatly increased TV audiences. He is a very special talent who like Marcos Ambrose and Scott McLaughlan has come through the V8 supercars championship. Lets hope that Nascar can build onto this great opportunity created by Shane to see if we can bring the Nascars to OZ and nothing would be more appealing them to see them run at one of the most impressive tracks at Bathurst. I am sure that Nascar and its drivers have now increased their fan base via this opportunity and I for one am excited to embrace this moving forward.
Yep Bathurst or maybe the Gold Coast would also be good.
Aussie here, I was up at 4am on a Monday, to see one of my Redbulls, in mine and his my first NASCAR race. SVG loves a challenge, races often in other events in between Supercar weekends. He's won it all in Supercars, more than once and ready for the next learning curve. I'll be sorry to see him leave my Redbull Ampol Racing Team, Triple 8 and Supercars, I'll have to learn the ins and outs of where he lands next.
Kiwi here. I've been following SVG for a large portion of his career. The dude seems to just genuinely love driving fast. He races basically anything: Dirt, drift, open wheel etc. and he does well at it.
I don't think anyone here expected him to win, but I think most expected him to do really well, and I don't think anyone was surprised that he did win.
Hey fellas. Some comments from an Aussie perspective. Gissy is a beast of a driver and he did an amazing job to win that race. It can only be good for the NASCAR series to have so many new viewers from Australia and New Zealand tuning in. On the flip side however…….hopefully we have some new American viewers take a bit more notice of our V8 Supercar series. I highly recommend you all take a look at our big race ‘Bathurst 1000’. All of you drivers are amazingly skilled and let’s be honest……a little bit crazy to do what you do. Mad respect all round 🤙
