I saw an adventure rider who routes his spare clutch cable right next to the existing one. Coil the ends up, tape them off to protect it from the elements and you're good to go. If the cable goes in the middle of nowhere, you're not spending a long time finding your cable in your luggage, if you brought one, and then installing it. Just release on both ends and pop the new one in, adjust and vroom. :)
@@BrandonBicasso It's not my idea! But I thought it was very smart when I saw it. If you can put the ends of the cable away nicely, it can be done on most bikes.
Thank you. My cable just went.06 m109r, I just got the bike and had no clue where to start. I was searching and came across your channel. Please keep these videos going.
The exact same thing happened to me with my 109 (07 also) at about 40k. I actually prefer the cable to gradually fray; gives you those crucial moments to get home/to safety. When replacing my cable, I disconnected from both ends and tape the top of the new cable to the bottom of the old. Pull from the top and it self routes to the lever. I wasn't removing more than one panel lol!
Brandon, after 15 seconds I think I know where you’re going with this 🤣. Today, I was suppose to sell my M109R. I pulled in the clutch cable and it snapped. With the buyer in front me 🤕Wow. I’m grateful it didn’t happen with him Or me on the bike, on the highway at high speed. So fortunate. Have a blessed day.
I had my clutch cable break the other day on my 2006M109R while I was riding. I was about 100 miles from home and fortunately it broke while I was moving. After initial panic about what to do that far from home I decided I was not too far from the highway and figured I could coax at home. I had to time my stoplights very well I was able to upshift and downshift without the clutch as long as I rev matched. I did have to make it through a few intersections with a series of right turns and U-turns in order to clear those intersections I was able to make it all the way home for about five stoplights and multiple stop signs without ever coming to a stop or killing the bike. Thank you for showing me how to change the cable I will change that next week.
Been there! Glad you made it home safe but I’d definitely say age. They get old and brittle like everything else. Grease the new one periodically this time.
Waiting for my clutch cable to arrive today. Pretty much the exact thing happened to mine minus a few different details. Bike just hit 14k but it is an 08 and it's the cruiser sister to the m109r. I'm riding the c109r.
Heck no it isn't. I was hoping I'd get more out of mine. I'm not complaining, though. I had more years on that cable than I did miles. 13 years on that cable.
I gotta say, it looks like you had the classic result of never lubing your cable ends (barrels) and the sockets that they sit in. Perhaps you should consider it. It takes a total of about 5 minutes (pull the two cable ends out of their sockets, clean both them, and their sockets, then apply some white lithium grease to the areas you just cleaned. reassemble and viola! You're done. Making it easy for your cable ends to rotate within their sockets will go a looooong way to preventing the cable strands from becoming "work hardened" and starting to fray. Just my $.02. Anyways, good video, thanks...and lube those cable ends every time you change the oil!
I agree. OEM is my preferred choice, too. Might as well use reliable parts and ones you know are going to fit regardless. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to carry an extra cable on long journeys. 🤔
The next time I'm home in Alabama, I'm gonna have to look u up, if it's good with you maybe we can take a ride, my home town ain't that far from where you are, I'm thinking mid September I'll take my annual cross-country run...
Haven't had to change them yet on my Guzzi, but great advice nonetheless. Sometimes I'm too quick with pre-ride checks (just wanna jump on that bike and go), but I do check every cable a couple of times a week.
Mine broke on my M109r when I took off at a stop light.....bike stalled at a stop light. In the HOOD!!!! Took about 3 hours to find a tow service truck to arrive. LOL😁. Some dude helped me push it out the street and onto a sidewalk. I just hung out at a nearby barbershop til the tow truck arrived.
I ride a K07 and I always have a spare under the seat - I will change to hyd clutch this winter and I will keep the spare under the seat.....for da buddies!😁
I usually put some wd40 on the cables each mth or two. It helps them stay lubricant up. Since mine is a 2007 I was thinking of having all the cables changed at the dealer or other repair shop. The motorcycle has only 7700 miles for an 07 and garage kept, but I'd feel safer having them all changed.
You're actually doing the opposite. If something has a oily residue on it, WD-40 will remove it because it's a solvent. It's okay for cleaning out grime and rust but after it dries, it would be a good idea to use something like silicone spray (cheap) or Tri-flow (expensive).
Clutch cable broke at a red light and bike lugged forward in the middle of a benefit ride for a falling brother. It was 4 p.m. on a Saturday and over 100 miles from home, so I put a set of vice grips over Clutch assembly than duck taped a rope to pull on and hand Clutch it home. Not fun😢
